Losing a Child to Addiction

  • “Drugs just bring on so much trauma in your family, well before you lose that loved one. It’s just ugly and it scars you,” says Shauna, whose son began experimenting with drugs at just 13 years old. In the years since his death, she and her family have found peace with the help of professional counselors and focus on faith.
By the time Shauna’s son was 15, his addiction was full-blown. Over the course of his short life, he was sent to jail more than a dozen times.
“I remember the first time visiting him, walking down that long hallway, and I was devastated,” describes Shauna. “I remember sobbing the whole way home. I just could not console myself.”
After every release from jail, he would try to resume his life without drugs and alcohol. However, he couldn’t get past the belief that he was beyond help and hope. Fearing for her son’s life, Shauna became overwhelmed with sorrow and fear. She was desperate for help.
She got on her knees and plead with God for a glimmer of happiness. In the hours that followed, her eyes were opened to the beauty all around her-evidence of the love God and Jesus Christ have for each of us. That perspective still brings her joy on bad days.
“The Savior is so present and so ready to lift our burdens and comfort us,” she says.
Can you see God’s love where you are?

The fact you can share that and ask for prayers is awesome.
"I do not know who in this vast audience today may need to hear the message of forgiveness inherent in this parable, but however late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made or talents you think you don’t have, or however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ’s Atonement shines."
      - Elder Jeffrey R. Holand, 'The Laborers in the Vineyard.'
Step by step. We stumble, sometimes we fall. But that's why we have Christ. You can learn through your trials. Don't give up, Jesus never has. Progress, not perfection. Keep asking for help. Learn coping mechanisms. You're loved

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm a young man who has had problems with addiction for many years and one of my major motivations for stopping was the pain it caused my mother. I will do everything in my power in this life in the name of the lord and for the sake of all the sons, daughters mothers and fathers to put an end to this unnecessary suffering.

God is our Helper but, to all those who have harmed themselves with poisons, imagine God watching you... He has given us a body so that we can live & man-made poisons (drugs, dirtiness, etc) will only slowly kill God's creation.

Our son is 60 days clean again. It is hard to be too hopeful, but we are holding on to the joy we have now. Thank you for your story. My prayers the past several years have simply been to help me love him and accept him without requiring anything from him. I no longer ask him for anything, or expect anything from him. Leaning on the Lord has been helpful/necessary. Thank you for sharing this story. Things like this are hard to admit, especially when it looks like things are smooth for everyone around you.

So beautiful. My daughter at 17 got hooked on crack. I Didn't know how to handle it. I had never been around ppl on drugs. Their father burnt up in a fire drunk. She was 12, my son 11, and my other daughter was 9. Christy was on crack for 14yrs She's been clean for 9. My son then got on meth. We did everything To get him straight but we couldn't. He was murdered almost 3yrs ago. We've never found his body and Nobody's been arrested. The police don't, but I do. I Feel like I'm in a nightmare and it never ends.I pray everyday and night to get justice for him and peace for my family and me. My Youngest daughter works in a hospital, she said everyday their load with ppl who have overdosed. To any one who reads pray Everyday for the world, pray your children never get on drugs and Most of all tell them how much you love them.

The only time we could relax was when he was in prison for 4 yrs. Then he got out and it started all over again my wife is at her wits end. Peace and Joy are hard to come by these days but I do agree they are there if you look for them. Addiction is a special kind of hell that just won't let up. This is a message for Shauna. I am terribly sorry to hear about what you've gone through. I had a similar experience with my father who ended his life when I was 12, after his life long struggle with drugs. But I wanted to tell you that it was the video you were in, that is played in the Gods Plan for Families exhibits in visitors centers, that is so special to me. I was 17 and had just met the missionaries, who brought me to see that video.. I cried, as I thought about my father, never hearing before that I would see him again someday. That was the day I decided that I wanted to go to church, and learn more. The spirit pierced my soul. Here I am now 11 years later, with a family of my own, and a life that has been miraculously changed through the gospel. Your face brings back such special memories :) My husband even proposed to me at the end of that exhibit in that visitors center. Thanks for being a part of my story, and thanks for sharinf yours. Hugs!!

Drug addiction is a terrible problem that no church can help it's the person that has to ask for it . Treatment for drugs is a deadly road and has to be handled in a treatment center and a places that is away from those that had turned him to the drugs an Intervention . If you force one thing that you will suffer yet the person that is abusing will suffer his own life to drugs .
That no church can help with is highly trained medical people that can take him from the bottom to the top . Drug abuse is hard on the family you just can't have the person go back he will need treatment

@White Sapphire, we're so sorry to hear of the loss of your child. Grief is a heavy burden. In the Bible, Jesus Christ invites each of us who carry heavy burdens to come unto Him, and He will give us rest: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Seek God's help, and seek help from friends and family, and from professionals. We know Jesus Christ loves and is aware of you and your family, and His gospel can bring you peace and joy despite this great challenge. www.comeuntochrist.org/beliefs/purpose-of-life

What form of parenting did you use when he was tiny? Stiff, strict parenting trains a child to grow up to have suffering. Nobody wants to talk about this. Where are the leaders who think it is better to tell us how perfect the past prophets were for year after year instead of teaching parents how to be kind and tender with your children. We have lost a whole generation of good parenting skills and all of this at a time when we need every skill possible to fight evil in our lives. Nobody talks about this in conference. The only thing said is sandwiched between the "husbands treat your wives with respect" talks and never brought out. I am so filled with pain and anger right now that I have about had it.

Addiction is a family disease. Go to Al-Anon meetings (not church Al-Anon, but the real deal Al-Anon) for the help you need when your loved one (dead or living) has a problem with drugs or alchohol. The meeting schedule is on-line.

You sister have the greatest gift to mankind. And that is being one of the choice few who have the fullness of Gods real doctrine on earth. This gift, if manicured, utilized by its prescription allows you to NEVER AGAIN say you have lost your dear precious son, who you must know was called upon to help in the Lords Plan in ways you will discover discredits the horrible pain you are feeling concerning the way our young brother travelled on before our own departure day. Surely his might and stregnths will afford you the best accomodations for your day that you wont have to deal with now. Its already taken care of. Iron out your hurt and be another like hims mom and save them.

You would imagine love is that easily shut off. Grief is related to deep love. Even those of us with tremendous faith and awareness of God's goodness miss our children. We may even be blessed with assuring revelation that all is well with them; nevertheless, there is sorrow in having lost their presence for the remainder of our lives
We cannot save others when we could not save our own. Nevertheless, I am again serving an addiction recovery mission. God has a wonderful addiction recovery effort in the church.
