- This week's video is all about Survival Fishing on ALONE Season 8. When you're dropped off in the wilderness with just 10 items and your survival skills, you've got to figure out how to use whatever you find to make it in the wild. Although Chilko Lake was incredibly pristine, I did manage to find one bottle cap which I fashioned into a bushcraft fishing sure using snare wire and paracord. In episode 1 I used that lure along with my bushcraft fishing rod to catch a nice rainbow trout. We also talk about how tough fishing is on that lake when you're stuck on the shore. Colter's boat may be a huge advantage in the long run.

Clay, love the straight forward, honest, humble approach you give on your channel. I must say that anyone who is offended by you kindly asking viewers to subscribe and leave a thumbs up obviously is a free loader. Their the ones that do not appreciate all you do to think about a particular subject or take a suggest from a viewer to film your educational videos, then edit them, which I know can take several hours, them proof them, then post them. It is a damn lot of work you do for each video. I greatly appreciate it and would never get offend or complain about you asking for support. I used to make bass fishing lures, jigs and spinnerbaits, from the age of 14 until I was 33. I'm impressed with your ingenuity and able to manipulate those materials like you did to make that bait.

For a fishing situation like you described, a Sbirolino could be pretty helpful. Sbirolinos are essentially in-line weights that allow you to cast light lures faster, and they´re often used for trout fishing in Europe. The most common types are neutrally buoyant or lightly sinking, so that they either don´t influence the behaviour of your lure much at all, or keep it in deeper water while you reel in the line. While the commercially available ones are made from acrylic or glass, you can also make them from wood wrapped with wire.

Thanks for sharing a useful experience with us. I follow the ALONE Facebook group regularly. Some viewers had no idea where participants got lures. They did not think about trapping wire, COLORED paracord, or about how little metal could be used to make a lure.

I talked so much trash when colter did the boat, but he did really really well with it. I ate some humble pie when he threw his gill net out and caught those massive trout.

Fishing is tough even in the best of times. You did better than most in the worst of times. That bucktail was exactly what I would have made!
Loved your spincasting rod build so much I replicated it! That bottlecap was a huge find... I modified my setup for fly casting using paracord sheath for leader to get line out there.

what you know determines your gear choices and what gear you have determines what you can do. You'll do very little wood processing with a saw edged shovel, but you dont need to do much if you know how to make a debris/ice shelter. you wont cut many fishing holes in the ice with axe and saw, but it's easily done with the 5 ft long handle in the shovel, chipping vertically, using a fire on logs and dirt to heat stones, softening the ice prior to chipping out 1-2" of it. Rotate out the rocks as they cool of course. Keep the holes open by covering them with boughs and snow. This will prevent more than 1/2" of ice forming for 4-5 hours. That ice is easily broken and if you remove the floating chips with your baked clay seive-ladle and 4 ft long wooden handle, it will slow down the re-icing of the hole by an hour. you can swiftly and easily make an ice-igloo, using blocks cut from the lake with your saw-edge, vs the wind, covering the internal surface with snow for the reflctivity of snow, when you lack enough snow to make the igloo from same. Stuff the igloo with debris and you'll conserve a lot of your body heat. you can use the fire and hot rocks to warm the igloo and stay out there beside your nets and hook-lines. A bark and wood "sailboat" can move the streamer-lures around so as to attract fish and again, the treblehooks help keep fish on the trotlines.
While still at home, or right before launch, waterproof-spray 2 sets of clothing and the backpack, so you can use those items as pontoons. On site, stuff them with debris, whipstitch the seams and tape them. Test the pontoons for air-leaks, then lash them atop the framework of the raft, made of 8 small logs. You can make the basic raft in one day, by firelight in 2 evenings and early mornings. Ditto the wooden 'throne' that keeps your feet dry. Lash the camera case to the throne and sit on it. Make the tripods for the oarlocks, the locks and the oars in one day Then you'll have a craft that can't be swamped, can't be torn open/sunk by a snag, can't be overturned, etc. The raft can let you access beaver lodges and let you catch them with spring-pole-stake jungle whips, which drive the serrated, barbed, fire-hardened stake into the beaver, pinning it to the side of the lodge's entrance tunnel. or lifting it by the neck in a snare. At some sets, you can rig both, for a doubled likelihood of a catch.

Clay, you're content is a lot more informative and entertaining than many and probably most other channels out there. I would never ask you to stop inviting more people to subscribe and like. "A hungry mouth doesn't get fed", right? You keep up what you're doing my man and the numbers will grow. I just bought a bow quiver from Donnie at Creek Walker Trading on your advice and am currently on your site measuring out some arrows to order from you. Too bad I'm as inexperienced as I am, I'm not sure exactly if the grain and length I need. I shoot with 55lbs at 28" on a 62" recurve. Seeing this video has made me start watching Alone...I knew about it, but you know, only so many hours in a day...having the skills is one thing, but dealing with the dangerous predators would be my Kryptonite. I've camped alone for many years, no cell service, for up to 4 days (gotta get back to work) but no bears and cougars! After just a few days in Season One some of these guys were losing it! Hope you won!

Grew up here on the snake, in Homedale. That's how I ran as a kid. Find stuff around to make fishing gear. Caught a lot of cat with a pop can, line, sinker and a bug.

You got me excited about the next episode! But prime is glitching and asking me to pay for the episode when I already bought the season. Customer service said they’re working on it and to wait 24-48 hours.
there comes the issue of "can you choke down 4 lbs of boiled or fried fish every day, along with a lb of diced, boiled, fried cambium"? That's 3000 calories, the minimum needed for a big mag to not lose weight, if hes' somewhat active in cold, wind, dampness. The 3 lb block of sea sault helps with that problem, as well as the dehydration issue that all of the contestants have, but dont aknowlege. You need those electrolytes to keep both your body and mind working well, and you cant get them if you dont take the salt.
You can do without the axe, sleeping bag and saw if you know how to make a shelter without any need of a fire and know to bring the reflective bivy. The bivy (eventually) can be cut up and with the duct tape, used to make 3 pair of pants and 2 anoraks. Stuff debris between the layers and KEEP your clothing ON when inside of the air-tight debris/ice quonset hut. You save the time and calorie-hassle of removing and donning clothing and the calories/time otherwise wasted on hauling and processing firewood.
The saw-edged shovel replaces both of them, so you're saved a pick. The bow makes no difference when all you can take is one lousy deer, 50,000 calories (at most) is just 3 weeks' worth of food. Anyone who outwieighs you by a mere 20 lbs erases that "gain" of shooting a deer. The snarewire gains you nothing, other than a change of diet, and you can snare rabbits with fire-hardened springpoles and braided fishing line,
You can fire harden a made-on-site bow and fletch arrows with the duct tape, good enough for bowfishing and taking 10m rabbits. So the bow and snare wire are easily done-without. Ditto the ferrorod. The cotton rope hammock lets you make 10x as much cordage as you can take in the form of a gillnet and paracord. So there's another gained pick. You dont need the cookpot when you can make baked clay pots and lids (4 of them, 1 gallon each are needed) Until you can spare the time to make the pottery, you can stone-boil in a tarp-lined pit.
Might consider having a small pebble between the 2 folds of the bottle cap around the shank of the hook. It would give you some extra weight for longer casting.
For small scale work like this, consider staying with the close in shot. I wasn't exactly tracking everything you were doing when constructing the lead.
BTW, You got me into trad bow hunting. I run an Omega longbow built by Kegan.

Could you wedge a small stone in the orange paracord and lock it in on both sides with the inner cord wrap...to add weight? Or wrap a small stone in the bottle cap as weight and maybe even a rattle?

I wondered why no one was using bait. That would have been my first choice. I'd love to know about some of the other restrictions. Were you allowed to shoot a bear if you had to? Were you allowed to use a sling? What exactly were you not allowed to hunt?

I would have kept the bottlecap bent and made the throughwire a bit longer and just sad some rocks to the Cap and bent it over the wire

Yes on the leatherman. Maybe on the paracord but probably not. I took the standard cord primarily so I could use the inner strands for net making.

Several times a year I go into the the bush led by the Holy Spirit, He always Keeps me on food, I don't need to search for anything, He provides mushrooms and plants, I was worshipping at my mine a few years ago, didn't have any food but wasn't worried about it, the Spirit walked a rabbit UpTo me close enough to brain with a bone that was laying close by. He Demands that we Love Him back, the only way is to have faith and trust Him.

Rocks aren’t really that heavy per volume.

So no squirrels, only barbless hooks, no live bait and can't shoot the bears. I think for a lot of people the bow and the wire were wasted items. How did you feel about the snare wire? Would you rather have brought something different Since the squirrel was off limits? Or did you know you could and would use it for all these other things? I'm curious to know if all these regulations are explained before you choose your items or after?
I was happy with everything I took. Wire is very useful for construction too.
