As someone who work in retail for a long time, washing things before use is a must! When I work on truck (processing and stocking new stuff) everything smells really strong of chemicals when it comes it, also a lot of hands touch your stuff before you buy it. I wash everything even things like home decor.

New subscriber. Your videos and talking about anxiety and depression are so helpful. I'm with you 100% about washing new things. I don't know how or why people don't wash new items. Think about the process at a sewing factory, how many hands work on sheets, clothes, towels, etc. Things get thrown in boxes or carts and passed to the next person to sew their part, handled to pack them, and how many people in a store touch, try on, take home, and return things, plus as you mentioned, dyes, chemicals, and new fabric. Anything fabric gets washed twice at our house to remove all these things and make things soft and fresh. Anything kitchen goes through the dishwasher just like you did.

We’re mommas so no matter what we have to be stronger mentally, physically and emotionally because it would be much more exhausting and suffocating to be surrounded with mess for depressed and at the same time OCD individuals like us. For holiday/seasonal stuff, store it with your seasonal decorations! And like everything. If you have seasonal clothes like an ugly Christmas sweater. Or fall kitchen towels. Then when you go get out the decorations, it’s there and ready for you to use, but not taking up space in the spaces you use everyday.

I keep a few Christmas mugs stored together with the Christmas decorations. That way they're not taking up space in my kitchen the rest of the year. But I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping memorabilia if it's something you look at often or use. To me, minimalism doesn't necessarily mean owning the minimal of absolute everything or only own stuff that matches each other.

I moved in with my best friend in October, into the home she'd been living in with her father who passed a few years ago. The first thing I did was decide we had to go through all the cabinets to get rid of anything old, expired, unused, etc, and clean everything out. We then embarked on a cleaning/decluttering spree, that is, when we had the time and energy lol. It's made a huge difference and the more that gets done the better I feel. :)

So with that being said…. Ummm definitely wash everything before you wear it, sleep in it, do anything with it. You are not alone and you certainly are not crazy!!! 😍😀👌

I was soooo happy when you said you keep several mugs. I use several things depending on my mood, time of the day, season, ... and therefore find it impossible to keep on to just one or two cups. I simply cannot live like that! Yes, it takes up more space but I have it all organized and neat in the cupboards. Sometimes, when I need something from the back, it can take some time, but I don't mind.

i have been on a purging/minimalist/simplifying mind set for almost a year. I have done 3 passes in my closet and 2 in my pantry and I'm sure there will be more passes to come. There is 100% a difference with "hoarding" items, and keeping sentimental items. I myself love mugs, I get them gifted to me for holidays etc. Coffee mugs are a weakness lol. But this minimal experience is to make you happy. And if it hurts your heart to get rid of things then don't push yourself to do so. Revisit the idea in a few months etc. You've given me so much motivation with my minimalism journey!

Just know, true minimalism isn't anything to do with an aesthetic. It is about keeping only the things you use and love. If those things are colorful and "nonaesthetic", that's ok! Definitely let go of excess, that extra inventory in your home is causing you more anxiety than you may realize. You will appreciate that more the longer you practice it. Keep up the good work! You've got this!

So one thing that you can do with the mug that you don't want to part with you can do a quarantine box for the ones you don't use and if you don't miss them after a certain time then you can donate them. Also another thing that has helped me is having a box for every one in the family for the sentimental items that you can hold on to it.

Re: spices, I am lucky to live near stores that have spice bulk bins so no decanting (I bring the empty jar to the store, weigh it, fill with amount of spice I want, then weigh it again. The cashier uses the weights to remove the weight of the jar in the final price (remove the tare). It's very economical and no stash of containers to refill from. I used jam jars with round labels from $tree that fit the lids. I like to cook so wound up with 60+ jars. Definitely not a minimalist kitchen. I really like the uniformity, too.

The struggle is SO real! I thought it would be so easy to throw away stuff and voila! my cabinets would be magically in order. I was so wrong! Just deciding what to get rid of made me hyperventilate!

you could use a marker crayola or dry erase and ruler to make a line to follow then wipe off or use masking or washi tape

Thank you so much for what you are doing on your channel! It is amazing to be able to see a real house as it is transformed but also see the effort too. I've been dealing with the trauma & anxiety of losing my mom suddenly last October & it has been nice having someone put words to why I can't seem to get myself motivated to get things in order for so long. I'm thankfully on my minimalism journey & am motivated & am hopeful to even help my Dad go through some of the things at his house too. Also, I have done the spice decanting & I do find myself going back to just look at it every now & then. Keep up the amazing work & thank you for everything you do. ❤

clean in 100% theraputic for me. i am a minimalist at heart! for my mental health if there is no use of an item to my house or doesn't make me happy I get rid of it immediately. all of my purges go to goodwill because I do not have the patience or mental compacity to sell the items.

I love how you added the clip about the sentimental items. I have my mom's bread maker I don't use but I can't get rid of it. I have a small kitchen so I tend to just keep it on the baker's rack maybe I can use it and solve that problem lol.

Everything looks so nice! You just inspired me to order the spice labels. I will tape 1” painter’s tape across the top of the spice jars and place the labels up to the edge of it, then remove the tape. My motor skills and patience are not good enough to eyeball it!

I was working on minimalism but idk what happened. Clutter and mess gives me anxiety and I will really overwhelmed when it’s too messy. Thankyou for your videos!! I like to do this little challenge with my sisters where randomly one of will say get a garbage bag and toss out 100 things (stack of the same thing counts as 1, trash, broken items/ toys, things you don’t use) you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get rid of 100 things. We do have a place for things you want recycle and donate. It makes a difference.

The Wicked mug makes me sentimental/emotional. Keep it as long as you can or need. Repurpose it on desk, or counter for Halloween utensil holder, makeup brushes, mascara etc.if you want to or have to. My sister has been missing for years, and your mug is giving ME feelings! So special n ok 100% aligned with konmari method, even if you’re not trying to intentionally. You are doing so well with your process, and giving your all to thinking about hard things, and listening to your heart n your spaces! I’m so happy for your clarity n deep investment for your vision of YOUR life.

What I did I went to lowes, we have lumber in the front of the lumber yard for cheap I had them cut down and I just stacked 1 then 2 and I got the boards so that the small spice jars like you have just fit on them. Lowes does straight cuts for free and the scrap lumber you can get for a really low price. Just FYI
Yes, it's best to wash everything if possible.
Also , I'm right here with you, I got started later due to just having little time and just barely being home. I didn't go for color scheme I'm like if I used it I kept it if I didn't I let it go and the funny thing is it ended up being mostly the same color or style when It came to dishes.
