Drove our 9500 Deere home from the farm sale Dad bought it at. Driving there in the pickup, and then back at combine speed took all of that Saturday. Think it was about 9:00AM when I got on the road with the combine and about 8:00PM when it got shut off at the shed. Mainly brought it back on 2 lane highways, sometimes they were 4 lane, divided. Dad was driving ahead of me, and had me turn around once for a too low underpass at a railroad track.
We had to drive a 1967 Allis-Chalmers D-15 Series II through a town of about 46000 here in Canada. The cops looked at us like whaaaa??? But after a long time discussing we were back on the road at a whopping 20 mph heading 60+ kilometers from where we were to a tiny rural town called Avonmore. What a day. Calcium low in one tire making the whole thing shimmy and I was sitting on a toolbox.
I got one for you. I work for a local dairy and was hauling manure in a spreader to his buddies fields about 15 miles away. Through town. I was sitting at a stop light and a Mercedes convertible pulled behind me and honked. It pissed me off so I unloaded about half a load of manure into his car.
Your story brings back memories of towing our planter home with the tractor. The planter folded up is 4.3 meters 14 feet so it takes up a lane and a half of the road and it was 320km 200 miles from our place out west to home down one the main highways in Aus the Newell Highway linking Brisbane and Melbourne. Most of the road is only two lanes one each way which made it interesting with all the trucks. Called the cops befor we did it and they said go for it and just told us to do it on a tuesday.
It's bad enough driving a semi truck with a 53' trailer through Allentown. I can just imagine what you went through with the TR-96. We used to take 20' machinery through Mendota, IL and that was bad enough.
Had another railroad underpass where I was standing outside the cab to see if there was clearance while going through it. The in tank auger cleared by less than a half foot. Never would have made that one in our 9400 Deere since the tank extension doesn't fold down like the 9500's does.
I bought my first combine when I was 15 years old and at that time you had to be 16 to drive on the road so the guy I bought it from had to drive it home for me guess I lucked out.lol... It was a MF 410 gas man did it run smooth... Thanks for the neat story
i can imagine how your story went lol...I live on the out skirts of the Lehigh Valley and I travel route 22 every day to work out last Deer Country. From Charlie Snyders all the way to Hellertown is a hell of a drive in a combine! LOL
This is why I love Michigan cuz combines Are always going up and down the highway through my town and we have state cops all the time and they don’t mess with them lol
I really don't like to road farm equipment more than a mile or two and traffic won't slow down for anything LOL Driving that huge combine is a challenge anyway, I always did it with a header and that sucks! The vid 'International Harvester' was too funny.

Great story though, The only thing I have thats about as good is me driving my Farmall H down Highway 95 in cambridge minnesota. I didnt back up traffic but going only 16 mph on a 1941 tractor down the highway is funny lol
I've seen signs at the on-ramp to highways in jersey saying you can't ride horses on the highway, but no mention of farm equipment. I wonder if someone tried riding horses on the highway before?

We have a old john Deere 45 combine from when my grandfather did oats... It was never wore out just got water in the block when the steel build ng it was in fell in... We cleaned up the building but the john Deere is still there
cool story where you from i live in williamsport pa been to philipsburg many times had a friend that lived theri been to allentown many times as well that would be hell to drive a combine thru their i would have loved to see that lol

Yea thats what i hate about our tr 96... it only goes 15.5 mph while our jd 9600 goes 19. I have to road them 2 hours and through town.. if the traffic is light I will drive right through town but if its busy I have to use the truck route which adds on 4 miles!!
I would say you got just as much attention as I did , pulling a mobile home with my tow truck , there are no laws saying you can do it if you are not a company , they tried to tell me I couldn't after they stopped me , but in the end I got an escort too ha ha ha
