crazy he talked about his main bass being used to hit the final note of the final rush concert, i was there at that show and can tell you it was truly an incredible night! I don’t think i saw a single person sitting down during the entire show and it was all respect for the band. Afterwards they had people walking around with cameras taking messages to RUSH and i got to personally thank them for all the music and inspiration they poured into my life. I saw every RUSH tour in my lifetime and i was sad to see it over but 40 years is an incredible legacy!
I was at the last show at the Forum too. It was my 57th birthday and it was the best birthday party ever. My husband and I traveled all over the country with some of our longtime RUSH friends and made it to 12 shows on the R40 Tour.

First time I ever played RUSH for my Mom back in the day and upon hearing Geddy shriek "YEAH OHHHHHH YEAH"....she asked me "was that singer neutered" LAUGHED my ass off and all these years later I'm quite certain Geddy would too! Yeah there’s is also the performance of Working Man, in the school auditorium, when John Rutsey was still their drummer.

100% true! Every bass is different. They all have a different story too. My brother played a Fender bass for 30 years. Nothing else...there was an unbreakable connection there...
My first bass was a Rickenbacker 4001... because I wanted to play like Geddy. I never, ever could play like Geddy… To say he's talented is an understatement.
I agree 100% with Geddy - I respect / prefer / enjoy a bass that's lived a life and has a story to tell. When I see a bass that has wear marks, paint worn off in areas from decades of play, chips of paint missing, buckle rash, etc, that bass is WAY more appealing to me than a pristine one. I want to know it's story, and if it's been played that much, it HAS to have MOJO.
I love Geddy Lee. What an amazing, genuine person. I've seen RUSH live, three times, and I own everything they have ever produced. Geddy doesn't know it, but he inspired this short little kid to take up the bass, and learn synthesizers. If I could meet him in person, I would ask him which bass (and amp) he used for recording the "Moving Pictures" album. Maybe some fans on this message board could helpl me. Thanks!
Geddy used a Fender jazz bass on some tracks like Tom Sawyer and the Rickenbacker he'd used on previous albums to record Moving Pictures. He was using 2 Ashley Preamps powered by 2 BGW 750-B Amplifiers into 1 Thiele design 2 x 15 cabinets and 1 Ampeg V4-B cabinet with JBL K140 speakers live at the time.

It's tough for me to understand some people because they're really high intensity and that's a challenge for someone getting back into music after healing from a marathon surgery course like me But this dude understands sound in such an individual way. You can tell because he's good at what he does. I'm learning a lot from him, and I'm just doing vocals.

It turned out he was a bass player and we ended up playing all over the world together. He's my oldest, dearest friend. Anyway, a couple of years after meeting him, he acquired a lovely sounding Wal bass which he still has. Guess what the serial number is?

0:47 it still boggles me that a bass that has seen as many shows as this one, did so with an aftermarket bridge that was installed crooked. But apparently it worked fine, as it's still unchanged now.
Yes Getty goes for old school verses quantity. If I had his fame & budget OMG LMAO. My collection would be vast a world beyond. I'd need a warehouse studio, lock myself in and learn not to sleep. I just love instruments & playing them. I have 20 & fight myself each month not to add 2 or 3 more. I've owned 100 now rare gems over 40 yrs. Wish I still had them. Amps & effects too.
In the beginning when Leo Fender started it all, no one really knew how the play bass, the metal pickup cover(s) was a palm rest when playing with a pick, the lower finger 'hold' was for those who played with their thumb.
Look, Neil was sick and on his way out at this time. Geddy and Alex were dealing with that but couldn't even say anything to anyone about it out of respect for Neil's privacy. That can stress one enough to forget things or to make a mistake such as saying a wrong date. Give em a break.
At 0:53 I think Geddy misspoke regarding the years the Rick was his main bass. In 1997, the black Fender Jazz was his main bass. As far as I can tell, he primarily used the Rick from about 1974 when he first got it for their first tour, through about 1981/1982 when he started mixing in the black Fender Jazz bass. In 1984 he started using a Steinberger and then he used a Wal through about 1987. Then in 1989 he went back to the Fener Jazz which became his primary bass.
@@gutbucket260 The opposite was true for the most part. From 1993 till the R40 tour in 2015 anything other than his '72 was a relatively rare sight. The Ric came out now and then as did some Custom Shop Jazz Basses but for the most part he played the '72 Jazz. Look at the live performances in that period and that's mostly what it is. Edit: actually I mean the Clockwork Angels tour, not R40. On the CA tour he had a number of Jazz basses with some of the alchemical symbols from the album (one of which was on the '72).

I wish he would talk about the crazy looking Blue Fender Precision "space bass" on the far right. Its so obscure but Geddy used to play it.

He used an old Fender that he bought at a pawn shop for less than $200 if I remember correctly.

What does the metal piece covering the pickups do on the older basses?
In the beginning when Leo Fender started it all, no one really knew how the play bass, the metal pickup cover(s) was a palm rest when playing with a pick, the lower finger 'hold' was for those who played with their thumb.

Look, Neil was sick and on his way out at this time. Geddy and Alex were dealing with that but couldn't even say anything to anyone about it out of respect for Neil's privacy. That can stress one enough to forget things or to make a mistake such as saying a wrong date. Give em a break.

At 0:53 I think Geddy misspoke regarding the years the Rick was his main bass. In 1997, the black Fender Jazz was his main bass. As far as I can tell, he primarily used the Rick from about 1974 when he first got it for their first tour, through about 1981/1982 when he started mixing in the black Fender Jazz bass. In 1984 he started using a Steinberger and then he used a Wal through about 1987. Then in 1989 he went back to the Fener Jazz which became his primary bass.
The Jazz didn't become his primary until 1993 with Counterparts. That is most certainly not a Jazz you hear on Roll The Bones. That has to be the Wal.
@@blue-tb2fd He always had the jazz in the studio. Even when he toured with the Ric, he was recording with the Jazz.
@@gutbucket260 The opposite was true for the most part. From 1993 till the R40 tour in 2015 anything other than his '72 was a relatively rare sight. The Ric came out now and then as did some Custom Shop Jazz Basses but for the most part he played the '72 Jazz. Look at the live performances in that period and that's mostly what it is.
Edit: actually I mean the Clockwork Angels tour, not R40. On the CA tour he had a number of Jazz basses with some of the alchemical symbols from the album (one of which was on the '72).
