  • Got a new contact wheel in the mail?! Well here is how to mount it securly to a tooling arm. While it's not rocket science, I still figured it was worth showing how I mounted up my wheel and where I got the materials and hardware. Also, I decided to tack on some footage of me mocking up a slack belt attachment... mainly to show what not to do! Have a great week guys.

    Correction... I said 1/4''-20 at 01:02 & 07:08 but 100% meant to say 1/2''-20. Sorry about that. I use 1/4''-20 so often that it just rolls of the tongue!

    This build just makes me think I need to invest in a new grinder. I think my skill level is finally surpassing what my home made 2x72 can provide. Those fancy Broadbeck grinders look pretty sweet! 😉

    Love using my 10 inch contact wheel for hollow grinds and also been using it to do initial profiling of blades- much more efficient than a flat platen.

    I'm really surprised that you had that much flex in 1/4" plate. Makes me think a guy would want to jump up to 1/2" to really stabelize things. Good to know as I have a future project that I will now have to re-think. Thanks James.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks Jim, I was surprised too! A big part of it likely was the spacing. If I reduced the length of slack belt section a little I think a good deal of that flex would come out. You saw that affect with the larger wheel mounted. But after seeing that I wouldn't go below a 3/8'' plate for this type of application. Cheers sir! Have a great week and thanks for stopping by.

    I used 3/16" for my 2×72 and never really thought about the flex. I'm gonna check it next time I use it

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  3 роки тому +1

      Cheers sir, like i said, it probably will still work just fine, but over time I think it could cause some uneven wear on your equipment. It will depend on the height of your set up as well, the piece I made was pretty long and that contributed to the amount of flex. Cheers sir!

    Allrighty then.... ordered my parts. Thanks for doing the leg work on that. I did the same thing with a tilting work table. 1/4 don't cut it, 3 No arbor press/8 or 1/2 from now on for me. How are the mods for the Mill working out? No arbor press for the bearings?

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  3 роки тому

      Thanks man. Yeah... I could of done a few other things for those bearings. I think freezing the bearings would of been smart too... and lightly heating the center of that wheel... I was definitely a little disappointed, but lesson learned! Cheers man.

      Thanks David. That is a tap guide or "tap follower"... I'd say it worked ok, but it's not 100% fool proof. Worth playing with for the price in my opinion. Tap Guide - amzn.to/33uhk6U - Have a great week!

    As always I really enjoyed your content! Hey next time try to press those bearings in with a vice. I pressed a ton of bearings in using the force of a vise it keeps things nice and straight. I have to admit I've put bearings in motorcycle wheels for years in the exact same fashion that you installed those. Catch you next time!

    Filing out the centers to make the adjuster looked like a real pain with just 1/4" plate. 3/8" or 1/2" plate woulda been worse. It was worth a shot.

    I've noticed if you take the tops off the bearings and soak them in windex for about 30min after a little shake for 10mins it degreases them. Because grease attracts dirt and they will be nice and dry so at lease the dirt just falls out and I've noticed they last longer but I will still change them out once or twice a year

    Took me a minute to figure out what you were doing... Could you make another plate, drill bigger holes(just to slide the bolts through) as reinforcement? Wouldn't even need to be that precise, maybe just a straight structure bar. You could always clamp it 1st to see if it works... Then you wouldn't need as many washers... Hope all is well, take it easy...
