    Nice! I did a kitchen floor years ago with that craft paper/dipped in glue/water mix/four coats of poly finush. It was incredibly durable, and just a damp mop cleaned it up easily.

      I did that to my airstream camper floor and it is amazing how well it holds up!

    I'm so glad you posted this. I'm supposed to be working on my van but the thought of messing up sheets of wood is daunting. And now it's expensive. I am going to do your method. Wish me luck!

    I have a couple tips:
    1. If your hot knife has temperature adjustment, adjust it to melt through the foam at about 1" per second. Do not burn the foam!
    2. Long, coarse sheet rock screws can also hold the foam pieces until the glue sets. I use 3" long ones.
    3. Gorilla clear glue, or foam fusion glue works best.
    4. Sand off the shiny appearance on the foam boards before glue. I use 80 grit and a random orbit sander. The edges do not have that shiny finish so you can apply glue directly to the edges.
    Veneer on foam works very well!!!

    This is super interesting Sean! Great walkthrough the process. Definitely something to think about as far as keeping weight down 👍🏾

    Great idea and follow through. The best way to learn what works and what doesn't is to do it. I've seen the paper bag/craft paper idea done on floors/walls with a poly follow-up for years, so I'm sure it will work just fine with the foam board. In fact, I think it'll stiffen it up.

    I'm impressed with how the paper cover looks. When you first started showing the dipping of the paper I had very serious doubts but the finished product has the visual interests and natural look of cork. I find this to be a great idea, I also dont want to pay in gas cost every mile I drive to carry all the various woods. Thanks for sharing what you learned in the process, so many great tips in this vid.

    Good job! For rough cuts on foam (both rigid & cushions) try a cheap electric carving knife (

    Paper bag gluing is also great for covering floors at home

    Looks awesome. Although I would have added some low sides on the shelves to prevent things from moving around and falling of when driving. I think the whole idea was genius and I learned something today. Thumbs up for this one.

    Do you think it would work to finish all the foam pieces, then assemble?
    And do you think it would work to use peel and stick vinyl for a final finish?
    Thanks for sharing this info!
    Best wishes to you!

    • @seanrayford

      Possibly. That would save time. I dont know enough about r\stick vinyl to answer that part

    I like the foam board with paper bag veneer. Wonder if one could use a vacuum bag with Titebond PVA glue to glue real wood veneer to the foam board. Or apply a layer of fiberglass to the foam board for stiffness then the wood veneer.

    Hey I noticed you've got at least one black cat. I have two and I will hopefully be traveling on a motorized bicycle hauling a foamy and poor man fiberglass bicycle camper. I am trying to design it basically like a teardrop camper but very small

    • @seanrayford
      @seanrayford  7 місяців тому

      It's good! My biggest challenge is a system that keeps drawers shut if I slam on my brakes. Sometimes a drawer will break free of Velcro strap in this scenario. I just have to redo it better.

  • @plantstho6599
    @plantstho6599 7 місяців тому +3

    Takes 1-2 days longer to pound out some furniture with this method. Probably more expensive with the addition of more tools and adhesivs. Also more complex processes and you need a space to do it in for those extended periods. Most van lifers don't have that. It is lighter, but I've got 200lbs of batteries. Might only be worth it if I could save another 100lbs so I can use that weight savings for more batteries. I found it easier and cheaper to build rough draft furniture for my first few builds by using 2x2's (2x4's cut in half lengthwise is better than the crooked 2x2's at most stores) for framing, 1/2" ply, and decking screws. Really sturdy. Once I settle on a design I like I'll use 5/8ths" birch cut with a router and held together with 1/4-20 barrel nuts.

    • @maryjomccallister9102
      @maryjomccallister9102 7 місяців тому

      You would use the contact paper instead of the brown paper.

    • @1DrkVixen
      @1DrkVixen 7 місяців тому

      @@maryjomccallister9102 that would leave for a rough surface wouldnt it? You would see and feel the layer of painted wire mesh - at least that is what I think. Have you build from foam before?
