You can all thank my brother's alarm clock for this one!
Oh yeah, if you need some decorating doing in the NW of England then you can count on him: / rocknrollerluke ❤️
I Robot is a proper mover from the first scrape of the needle to the last pop. And the guitar solo from I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You is simply stunning. I'm grateful for the market stall recommendation which sparked the hilarious reminder from my past.
I should've learnt this GUITAR SOLO years ago. I hope you enjoy the solo and the lesson.

Great solo by Ian Bairnson. You should check out his previous work with the band Pilot (especially the album Morin Heights) as well as other Alan Parsons Project albums. He also did the solo on wuthering heights (Kate Bush)....and the Ladyhawke soundtrack (80s adventure movie with Rutger Hauer, Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer). Keep up the good work Sped!
Wowwwww I did not know that. I am in dire need of a Wikipedia dive and a good set of headphones. Thanks for sharing.
@@SpedSpedding yeah i didn't realize the parsons/bairnson connection either until i recently geeked out on the song 'magic' by pilot and read that AP produced haha
@@MackAxyzz Yep, even though i was a HUGE A/P/P fan back in the late '70s, i never known about the "Pilot" (David patton-bass/Bairnson-guitar) connection until just a few years ago when Patton himself put up some "songwriting" informational Y/T vids, and he discussed Pilot, and working on almost all of the early well known A/P/P albums.
And when i went back and listened to some Pilot and the earliest A/P/P songs you can DEFINITELY hear Ian's playing influence, solo structures, and especially guitar tones!!!...
@@d.williams9894 parsons also produced early ambrosia stuff and recruited those guys for APP work also...cheers mate 😎
So glad your channel is really starting to get the following it deserves. Ya do great work. Keep it up!
Thank you so much! Appreciate that.
Bro I found your channel a few days ago ,and you are seriously so thorough. Cheers to life, and the learnings I will be learning from you .
Welcome aboard! I appreciate that.
Sped can we please get a lesson on for your life? Such an undeatted zeppelin track with so many sick guitar parts
Awesome. Can't wait to get home and learn this. Thanks mate.
Have fun!
Love it, great solo and locking in with that rhythm section is fun as well.
It really is! Glad you liked it Ray!
I really enjoy your teaching style Sped. Found you today when i was searching for a lesson on Alone by Heart. Your lesson is hands down the best on YT. WWTBLY is a fabulous solo & I-robot an album i grew up with. Bairnson was a very underrated guitarist. It would be fabulous if you could do a solo lesson on Wuthering Heights, which Ian also did. Its a beautifully crafted solo. Keep doing what you're doing, its fabulous 👌
I remember “I Robot” a couple months after it was released. It was huge here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Late discovery for me but one of my fondest “better late than never” moments with music.
...one of my favorite solos ever; thanks for sharing brother and God bless
Many have said the same; it totally slipped under my radar for so long. So happy everyone is digging it.
Hey Sped,
Great lesson! Totaly digging this as well as the other one you just recently posted with the Plant song!
As always, thanks for making these songs much easier for us to learn man!!!
Hey dude. Hope you're good! Glad you liked this one, enjoying the new format? Feels like it breaks things up a bit but you still get the good stuff! 🤘🏻
@@SpedSpedding excellent! If I’m grasping it fairly quick it has to be good man! Ahah 🤣
It really cool to get such a musical, funky example of a nat minor solo. I love this lesson.
So glad you liked it. ❤️
Great song, excellent solo and great playing and teaching on your part.
Thank you kindly!
Use to listen to that album a lot. Love that song. You nailed it Sped. Brings back memories.
I’m glad you’re a fan of it Andre! Hope they’re good memories! 🤖
Apart from being a great teacher, you are quite the storyteller and comedian.
I remember as a young man embellishing in this tasty riff, the world would disappear for a moment. Now I play it. Thanks to You and your channel, Class Act Sped.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
That’s awesome to hear! Stoked that you finally learnt it with me. 💪🏻🤩
Great lesson!! Have always loved this song and of course Eye in the Sky.
Same here! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great lesson. Entertaining too!
Glad you enjoyed it! Important to have a laugh. I like to break things up.
Great tutorial Sped.
Love a bit of Alan P Project. All time favourite has to be Sirius💯 Great riff and tone
Perusing vinyl is great adventure
Love your Patreon. Great fun over there 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Chris, I’ll check that one out. And also, appreciate your support and dedication as always.
Love that album, great memories. Such a great solo over a funky groove. Reminds me of the solo from the Rocky theme “Gonna Fly Now”.
I love that song as well. Maybe I’ll take a look at that too.
Glad to have found your channel! After years of playing cowboy chords on acoustic guitar (not that there's anything wrong with that!) I've been working on my lead chops for the past year and learning solos is a great to learn the fretboard. The fact that you throw in a little story telling, style and that british cheekiness is a bonus!
Welcome aboard Frank. Glad you like the format. It helps me keep things varied. Was starting to feel a little hemmed in. 🤘🏻
The tone is gorgeous 😍
🥺 thank you!
Loved it! Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Had a little iRobot phase a few years back, couldn’t stop funking to it. Lovely to see this video, will definitely learn the solo now. Thanks brother !
Again, glad you enjoyed it. It’s funny how we move through little phases like that. I do the same myself.
Great guitar tone and slow playing technique!
ROCK!!!
Thank you kindly!
Great vid and a very good solo 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, I agree.
Great choice for a lesson. Ian Bairnson is a wonderful guitarist. Thanks for posting this.
My pleasure! I need to take a much deeper dive into this world. Only really familiar with this album. Working my way through the tips in the comments!
This is a deep track gem for sure. The solo was written by a pro. I saw them live Feb 2020 right before lockdown. Great show.
Oh wow, again, had no idea they were still touring as a “project.” I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled. 👀
@@SpedSpedding not the original project lineup but he’s got some great musicians. He has a guitarist who can play but what blew me away is the guy has got a set of serious pipes. He was belting out crazy high notes.
You are the best, man. Love you greatly! ❤️🎸❤️
🥰 feeling the love Justin. Thanks for commenting.
Breakdown sang by the lead singer of the Hollies Allan Clarke. Alan Parsons engineered a few of the Beatles albums and The Dark Side of The Moon
This is great - just found your channel last month. Love Alan Parsons Project, there are tonnes of great guitar bits through their songs. Psychobabble really gets me moving. Unsolicited suggestion ... the first ~2:15 intro of YES/Gates of Delirium or the full 8 minute opening movement. Great work - keep them coming.
Welcome a board! Glad you’re liking my stuff. Im trying to change up the format this year to make it more personable and interesting. Still wanna make sure I’m teaching though. 🙌🏻 I will investigate more, thanks for the tips.
Man! That's a killer solo. I think everyone who collects albums has a funny story about at least one album in their collection, and a funny story about how shit their brother was at getting up in the morning. Haha
🤣🤣🤣 they absolutely do. Should see him now though; he’s up every day at about 5am and works about 12 hours. 💪🏻 Me on the other hand, I’m up at 5am but I might not have gone to bed yet… 👀🤣 #editingowl
Breakdown is one of my all time faves...
Hits even harder on the vinyl. 🙌🏻🥺
Over 100K subs.. Well done! Congrats. I remember when you had around 30K.
Yes! Thank you, the support over the years has been truly outrageous. 🥺👏🏻
Great solo, great song
Yeah it really is. 🍺
I had the great honour of becoming Dave Paton's guitar tech and can now call him a friend. He and Ian Bairnson were in Alan Parsons. They are incredible players and have a ridiculous catalogue of material between them. I highly recommend checking out more of their stuff.
So very cool David! I fully intend to. I’ve had the record spinning a lot; I’ll have to give Spotify a blast until my guy at the market pushes some more onto me. 😏
Great to share that story David!...
As someone old enough (cough,cough,wheeze...) to have grown up listening to late '70s American AM pop radio I can say that "Magic"-Pilot was WAY beyond any of the Beatles knock-off/copy bands and the "Mike Chapman" harmony guitars/harmony vocals pop songs on the charts then!...
Think of songs by Badfinger, theSweet, or even BayCityRollers, from then, and then listen to "Magic" to hear how advanced (especially the two main guitar parts: opening riffs, main solo!) it was for a pop song!!!...
And then came A/P/P which SO MUCH defined late '70s/early '80s American FM "Rock Radio" to impress listeners with "clarity'" and "level" of the radio station's broadcast signal...(A/P/P along with PinkFloyd albums/songs...those another Parsons engineered works!...)
Str8 outta the 70's bin? Great that you covered this!!!
I think those were his only two bins. Haha. 🤣
@@SpedSpedding I don't feel so alone being 72, LOL!!!!!
Pissing my pants laughing at this. Remember it soooo well 😂😂😂. Poor Tom 😊😂xxx
Must have creeped into your room as well? 🤣🤣🤣
Sadly Ian Bairnson passed a couple of months ago. :( Love his work with the Alan Parsons Project.
Great song. Funny I was just sitting here watching the video my wife Amy was next to me when you were talking about scales. She loves that song & she was like wow he's really good but what was he talking about scales do you know what he's talking about? I smiled & said that's why I'm a bass player lol. Best to you & Gabby.
Don’t be doing yourself a disservice there my friend; bass players are talented musicians! And I bet you know more than you’re letting on. 😏
Sped! We need more story time! Love it! Keep it up mate.
As in, just like this or an actual book? 🧐
@@SpedSpedding like this! You are my favorite person to learn solos from but your stories always make me laugh. Keep them coming!
i have not heard this tune in .. at least 35 years...wow
😏😏😏 looks like I’m right on time.
Hello Sped. I've been watching on and off since subscribing. I enjoy your showing of various solo works. Would you consider looking at Martin Barre's solo in Aqualung? I find it melodious.
Second track after IRobot … great album! Haven’t heard this cut in years! Thanks!
You got the record yourself? 🤖
@@SpedSpedding I wish ... many years ago, I think my Dad bought it on 8 Track Lol!
My favorite APP track (alongside Breakdown from the same album) and now I can learn it and butcher it on me guitar at me own leisure! Thanks, Sped!
🤣 you’ll do more than butcher it because I’m your bossy teacher! Take it slow and have fun with it. It’s a wicked solo.
That whole "I Robot" album has great and tasty/tasteful playing all over it, some of which seems so simple on listening, but most never could get the "feel"/execution that Ian had...
I see the Tori Amos album in the background...she went to my high school in Maryland Richard Montgomery High School!! Good on Ya!
Nice job! I would love to see you do a video on the outro solo on Eye in the Sky
I'll check it out!
Nice one!
You’re welcome. 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding I knew which solo right away as soon as I saw Alan. TBH, the only albums I really like by him are his first two: Tales of Mystery and Imagination and I Robot. He starts to get too 'radio friendly' after that for my taste.
I thought it was recorded with a Les Paul, but that was Games People Play--also a fine solo. Great job, Sped.
I didn’t go into the finer details but it just felt like funky Strat time to me.
I love discovering solos to learn in random places. Another one: The original Fireman Sam extended theme. Got such a nice little solo in it. Super happy 80's sounding.
Hahaha, that theme absolutely slaps. Duelling guitar harmonies with badass tone. It’s like Thin Lizzy and Oldfield. The Crystal Maze theme is a boss too; I did a rock cover of that. Also a big fan of The Bill.
yes! i forgot about that record and that song and that solo. ahh, the 70’s-or was that early 80’s…still no better time for perfectly crafted rock guitar solos.
great story too…im picturing the old geezer on the cover of aqualung.
I think I’m the old geezer on the front cover of Aqualung to be fair… 🤣🤣🤣
@@SpedSpedding u and me both, bro.
6 quid for I robot on vinyl is a steal hard to find I have Alan Parsons project compilation on CD... great music now you've done this video I'm going to have to put it on the to learn list...currently wrestling with Clapton's version of hide away 🤤 the moises app very helpful...As always great lesson thank you
Haha it absolutely is, and Peter Gabriel! What a bargain. Moises is such a useful tool. Being able to thin out a mix and focus on a specific instrument makes my life a lot easier. 😍
Another excellent video lesson. Just really enjoy/like your whole approach to teaching and playing. You take requests?
Thanks Joe! I definitely read and reply to as many comments as I can and some people make requests yeah. It depends on what it is really. I try to respond to the ones I think will do well.
@@SpedSpedding check out Extreme 'interface', has a really nice solo at the end, Nuno is awesome
little earthquakes - total gem
I hope the centrefold of Sped's next release features a giant photo of Sped's head. I will be disappointed if it doesn't.
Will run it by the band…. 👀🤣
What year is your Standard, what neck does it have?? It looks stunning in the videos!
Alan parsons project have great tunes,,, i robot, wouldnt wanna b like you,, Beaujolais,,etc etc
Yeah and this one particularly is a favourite. Such a tune.
Thanks for this, If you see Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Edgar Allan Poe you should investigate. AP was engineer on some Beatles records and Dark Side of the Moon, quite the genius!
I can’t believe how little I knew about AP. I should have read more album notes when I was a kid instead of just learning the riffs. Or maybe not? Haha 🤷🏻♂️
@@SpedSpedding I was lucky enough to have 3 older brothers into music. I love your lessons, so well broken down and easy to follow, thanks
Helen stole that album from me back in high school. I thought I'd never see it again.
The mystery gatefolds.
Sometimes sailing under the radar, Alan Parsons received a Grammy nomination for his role as engineer on Dark Side of the Moon.
Someone below just mentioned that. Outrageous. I had no idea! 🤩🤯
Oh wow, never heard this before but I listened to the whole album today. It's a belter! Worth £12 on it's own 😀
Haha yeah it is you’re right. But made for a good story, and it’s all true! 🤣
A great album! Alan Parsons’ career as a producer and engineer is amazing. Working at Abbey Road Studios with artists, such as the Beatles and Pink Floyd.
I hadn’t done that much research into his production career. Will investigate further!
@@SpedSpedding You might find it interesting. Dark Side of the Moon, etc. Love your channel! Thanks for all the great music and instruction.
Hell yeah. I've always loved it. Since it was new. Because I'm an old bastard. You will be too one day lol. Nice upload. (edit: also, The Raven from the prior album has a few tasty guitar passages. That I don't know.)
I’ll take a listen to that one too! And mate, I am an old bastard don’t you worry. 🥸🤣
Hi sped, I really want to improve my playing but UA-cam just isn't cutting it, would you say lessons are the best way forward?
If you've never tried that then yeah go find a teacher that you rate and like!
I can definitely do the face. Is ebmajor dsharp. Yeah. Anyway I'll try this after I finish polishing the silver. Not a euphemism.
Same thing but it comes down to enharmonic spelling or key signature.
Sped…did you sit there and move the needle back and forth a million times to learn this…cuz that is serious old school stuff…either way…great job as always my man👍
I mean I could have done. It definitely sounds better on the record but I’m not gonna lie, I found it easier with digital… just for learning anyway. 🧐
So much good stuff in the 1970's. Back in the days of magnetic tape, which doesn't lie. Had to play the instrument and sing the notes. Couldn't just use the DAW and pocket it to the grid with beat detective, fly the sections for cut and paste and then auto-tune the vocals into mediocrity.
The professionalism back then is outrageous isn’t it. I did an album way back in 2007/8 with my friend band in Hamburg. We recorded live to tape through a Neve desk. Yes it went from tape into protools so we could overdub synth and piano if we wanted etc but the core was all of us in a moody room with headphones locking in. I’m really proud of that.
@@SpedSpedding Before Protools, there were only Pros.
great video forgot what a cool solo that is
Thank you! Glad you liked it. 🤘🏻
Crafty on behalf of the market man. You going again? Is the fireplace listening?
I’ll definitely be going back. See what he’s got for me this time. 😏
American here! What is the difference between a Quid and a Pound?
Slang for the same thing! Like dollar and Buck.
£12 for two vinyls these days is an absolute bargain.
It is isn’t it. I’ll leave a tip next time as he’s sparked the inspiration for this whole video. 🙌🏻✨
The story and your guitar face might be as good as your playing and instruction - certainly very entertaining!
Haha thank you Martin! I do appreciate that.
yep, agree, that 'face' during the rhythm part was note worthy
Edgar poe pale blue eye detective at c west point
What’s that??
I’m 3 minutes in and have no clue what you going on about. Get to the point faster
Cheer up mate.
@@SpedSpedding no no I think you took it the wrong way. I’m saying you’re not hooking the audience fast enough. You seem like a cool guy. But for someone that’s not used to your channel, when it came up on my recommended you only have a few seconds of people attention spans anymore. So you gotta hook ‘em faster. I hope this helps!
that is a great guitar solo and great song, as well.
Agree!
@@SpedSpedding can you show more of the rhythm guitar parts. is the solo over just one chord?
Oh Man!! I'm a Deep Alan Parsons fan!!! Even write some stuff Inspired by them. Thank You!! I hope you don't mind, but I want to Share with you, a hint of some of my music. I moved to Orlando, Florida to attend Full Sail University, a Recording Producer Program, they didn't fulfill many promises, and long story short I ended up Homeless and lost everything, including my 9 guitars, one a bass, an Acoustic and a Dobro I was just Beginning to learn.
This is a small sample some of the varied ideas of mine. I'm both into Rock and Ambient New Age stuff ala Deep Forrest and Enigma, etc. I had both Logic and Presonus Pro on my MacBook Pro. I had a track called AWAKEN The Dragon Within, that was very much inspired by Alan Parsons with acoustic guitar intro, that was on there, but I can't find it. Anyway, the Guitar and Bass Parts as well as some Synth are me. I used elements of parts on Logic, for pieces like The Unheard Voices of the Jungle Night, which is more in the Direction of Film Track music. Namaste
