Anatomy of an earthquake: What happens when seismic hazards meet populations? Professor Iain Stewart

- In this exciting educational video, Professor Iain Stewart from Plymouth University and Shadow Industries explores the anatomy of an earthquake, uncovering the science behind seismic hazards and how they can impact vulnerable populations.
As people continue to flock towards urban centres, the threat of a direct seismic strike looms large. We take a closer look at the different types of seismic waves and plate tectonics, explaining how they can cause earthquakes and the damage they can inflict.
With the help of Dr Susanne Sargeant and Dr Roger Musson from the British Geological Survey, we examine the latest research in earthquake preparedness and how mega-cities can protect themselves. Join us in this journey to understand the anatomy of an earthquake and learn how to prepare for this natural disaster.

His accent is stronger than the earthquakes lmao
OHHH MY GOD YOUR COMMENT MADE MY DAY LOL😂😂 YES HIS ACCENT IS A 10.9 ON THE RITCHER SCALE
Probably the weakest Scottish voice.
Lol you just made my day
@@andym28 he’s my second cousin and he is Scottish through and through don’t you worry
@@gregorclark9925 ive no doubt but its a very weak and understanable Scottish accent.
Thank you sir, for putting up such a wonderful and educational video. It helped me alot for my geography test tomorrow.😀
live on the epicenter of that 4.4. Every house on street empty, cats and dogs gone, baby screaming. Was so loud my mum phoned thinking something exploded and my neighbor thought it was a plane crash. Had to run outside to tell everyone it was an earthquake. Was worried some mine shafts collapsed but I heard a similar noise a month or so back and now we have an orange street after an orange geyser erupted at the bottom of our street. There has always been iron ore staining the water in these parts but to see it splattered over dozens of cars and houses was unreal. It's still a mess further down my street but I'm not so certain that everything is settled. So many more cracks this month in all the same places in my house that appeared after that earthquake. The streets all seem a bit wonky with weird pot holes everywhere too.
this guy should do audio books
This is the best explanation on UA-cam. Clear and precise with so simple explanation. Many lives would indeed be saved if these concepts would be accepted by officials and people.
I liked this video even before it started, the visuals were amazing and delivered the point perfectly, and the delivery by Iain as usual was impeccable!!
Time for online school tutorial videos yayyy
same lmao.
Why arent you making more videos like this?????
Plate Tectonics.. pls
He had me at his Scottish accent 😊
He’s my second cousin 😂
Who is here after the catastrophic earthquakes in turkey n Syria?
Great video about how a shallow earthquake affects a city nearby. Congratulations to Iain Stewart, BGS and EwF.
I was only surprised not to see any earthquakes shown on map in California.
Nice Movie. except for the global earthquake map. The earthquake and city's location were both off in the East Asia.
Very inspiring and informative!!
Iain is the best! Thank you for the video!
The visuals taught me nothing.... there were just some circles going up! Also, the map at the end was wildly inaccurate!
Thank you, this was very interesting. After all the EQs we experienced in Christchurch and then all the reports and reading of materials (that most everyone did) there are still things to be learnt about the science of EQs. :)
I’ve felt my fair share of earthquakes in England in my lifetime, depends wear you live in Britain mostly, I hate those sharp shallow ones over 4.0 magnitude, first the vertical jolt then the horizontal shaking kicks in and the cacophony of noise that follows, only last a few seconds but it gets your heart racing and your mind is in split second reaction time so it seems longer, strong quakes over 5.0 magnitude happen once or twice a decade. The big ones can get up to 6.5-7.0 magnitude in Britain but are thankfully rare, big earthquakes in the 6.0-7.0 range occurred as follows 1076, 1185, 1247, 1275, 1343, 1382, 1449, 1508, 1580, 1750, 1847 & 1931. The largest ‘instrumentally’ recorded was a M6.1-6.8 quake in the Doggerbank area in June 1931, the largest known earthquake in Britain was an estimated magnitude M7.0-7.3 quake off the north west coast of Scotland on September 19th 1508!
Awesome !! Cheers professor Ian Stewart.
Aka my second cousin
i am only watching this for my geography work
BAHAHAHHA SAME
same 🤣
I’m watching this because he’s my second cousin

How big the amplitude of shaking the surface of earth can reach? Is it centimeters or can it reach 10 meters? And is there any video, where this shaking is visible? Hope someone answers
Amazed to read that a couple of 'so called' English speakers find it difficult to understand his accent. Its more legible than many. Great presentation overall.
Thanks you for this explanation. I do wish you would have spoken more slowly, however.
Play the video in 0.5
thank you - so useful - overview for a level geographer s
Thank you for sharing this.

Quite interesting informational video, does any body know where I can find more information about earthquakes, how they form, how they move and everthing related wit it. Any answer will be appreciate it
i use bbc bitesize
i just realised this was 3 years ago o.o
He did a documentary of the Japan earthquake of 2011 best documentary and can't find it all anymore
. Where is the Epicenter of an Earthquake in relation to its focus?
The epicentre is the point on the surface closest to the focus - usually directly above the focus.
Very well presented. You should get together with Dutchsinse and help him document the methods he uses to get about 80% accuracy with his weekly earthquake forecasts. He makes the USGS look like incompetent fools on a daily basis.
@Martin Turner idk martin, why would you cheat on your wife?
Good video, may have also been a good opportunity to introduce landslides as well however... particularly with the slopes backing onto the city
У Вас сильно обобщенная картина, реально тектоника сложнее. Вы не поставили здания на разлом.
Shush

Jesus, Japan is just one giant Earthquake.
for some reason i dont think he is really talking

We're checking that not much has changed along the past years...Turkey and Siria are crying their thousand deaths.....sad! POVERTY AND BAD GOVERNMENT MANAGING......CORRUPTION IN HUMAN HEARTS....THAT'S THE CAUSE, INDEED! GREAT VIDEO MASTER
prescient of what is happening right now
You summarized the Turkey sir sadly.
when he talks my house shakes, i think its a earthquake...
Oh tell us batman is like to know as I'm too damn stupid to know about tectonic plates and earths crust movement
the accent is tormenting

NERD ALERT

His accent combined with his cavalier presentation is grating. All we want is technical information not scottish patronizing.
