What's the best way to stop on

  • Most skaters think the Powerslide isn't a viable stopping option for them, because it looks too difficult or because you think you can't do the transition from forwards fast enough for it to be useful in real life.
If that was true then hundreds of Skatefresh students wouldn't have learned the Powerslide successfully. There are 4 options available to you in terms of transitioning your favourite way and sliding your favourite leg. The Skatefresh "Powerslide 4 Ways" training outlines, demos and explains these 4 options with clear step-by-step instructions. Once you've found your combo you can then focus on perfecting it, getting your mini, slow speed slide and then building up your speed over time, very, very slowly.
I wouldn't skate as fast as I do, in traffic or down slopes without this forwards entry to Powerslide in my repertoire and many skaters have reported that "it's a game changer."

    That looks so effortless. ❤

When something looks effortless it;s because the technique is correct! Well spotted. Those students all learned those power slides in just one session, so that shows it's possible with the right technique and the right progression of movements and exercises. If you can't make it to one of my teaching weekends around the world, then grab yourself an online course where the same content is shared in detail. Yesterday a fellow ice skater told me, in order to learn the hockey stop you can start by doing powerslides. It was really effective. The only difference is that you don't lean as much on an ice blade.

I agree that the Powerslide is a skill you need to be fluent with in order to begin hockey stop training 9which is much, much more difficult technically than the Powerslide). So yes, it's a great place to start AND it's a great functional stopping method for almost every situation (which the same can't be said of the hockey stop which has quite a few limitations such as surface quality and if course the difficulty aspect). Can you tell, I LOVE Powerslides. I think every skater should be wokring on theirs until it's fluent. The skate world would be a different place if everyone could Powerslide to a stop whenever they needed to.

@@SkatefreshVideos Oh yes, we know you love Powerslides, actually your powerslides are one of the best I've seen.
I barely need to emergency stop, I always slalom to lose speed but the powerslide is quite easy to learn and really helps in a bad situation. On ice, surrounded by crazy teenagers and kids, is a must.

Can you please make training video on how to control the speed when skating backwards, which includes slowing down and stop safely when skating backwards on inline skates. I see lots of backwards skating on quad skates that has toe stop to help with the slowing down and stop, but not much on inline skates. I skate outdoor without the brake on my inline skates and I want to know different ways on how to control the speed safely when skating backwards. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. That's a great idea! Not many people skate fast going backwards on inlines, the ones who do usually just glide but don't get propulsion, unless they go downhill, so the speed is never enough to become a worry. Therefore, I believe you're the first one asking about how to control speed going backwards. There are several ways to do that, gliding is one of them, using scissors, swizzles, wiggles or even parallel turns. I sometimes also use a trick called stroll. For stopping there are several ways too: the snowplow, the stepping plough that Asha calls chop-chop and some fakie slides such as the soul, acid, cross acid, etc. The stop Asha uses most of the time is the power slide and to control speed she uses the fakie soul slide that you can see in this other video ua-cam.com/video/aiiPuW_eN4g/v-deo.html at 00:49. Anyway, I will let her know about your question and I think she will be glad to make a UA-cam video. It may take some time, because right now the weather is not so good in England.

@@SkatefreshVideos Thank you so much for taking the time to respond with good tips and the links to the videos. I'm looking forward to watching and learning from your future videos on the backwards speed control and stop safely. Thank you!🙏

Can you inline skate in the wet, or is it a big no no?

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. You can if you have a high level of dexterity, however it's extremely risky and quite detrimental for the skates hardware.
