- Sociopolitical history of the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
This South African history is told through the life story of King Sabata Dalindyebo, the King of the Thembu nation.
The film reflects on the African History of the Thembu Nation, the advent of Transkei "independence" as a tool of the Apartheid Government and the diverse roles played on that political stage by three cousins; Sabata Dalindyebo, Kaizer Matanzima and Nelson Mandela.
Sabata's journey is followed closely, from his opposition to apartheid to his dethroning, his joining of the banned African National Congress and his eventual life in forced exile.
The film follows the emergence of militant Xhosa resistance to Apartheid in the final years of the 1980's, shortly before the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.
General Bantu Holomisa's rise to political prominence in South Africa is documented as he led a military coupe against the corrupt Matanzima government of the so called "independent Transkei, and then surprised everyone by being sympathetic to the liberation movement instead of the Apartheid Pretoria government.
The film documents the glorious reburial of King Sabata Dalindyebo, The Comrade King, who had originally been buried in a pauper's grave after his funeral had been hijacked by Kaizer Matanzima.
The film was shot in 1989 and was one of 18 films broadcast in 1994 by the SABC in the series "Unbanned".

Dear Onke. I remember your grandfather ,Chief Dalaguba, so well, and so so fondly. He was a very regal gentleman who treated everyone the same, taught me to enter a room and say "Aaaaaaaauw THEMBU". He challenged and shaped my naive politics. He was an exemplary host. He was a powerful man through his character, not his position. He carried responsibility with grace and confidence. He was a leader. My partner at the time, painted a beautiful portrait of him. I suggest you contact her and see if it is still around. Hazel - 082 595 4625.

I'm so happy you liked it. Thank you.
@@Transkei_Stories Hey Ben, I am writing a thesis which touches on some of the events covered in your doccie and I would like to reference it as it is an astonishing production altogether and deserves recognition even in the academic world. The only things I will need from you is the date of publication, full title and title of publication of the film. I would also like to know how/where I can find the tapes of King Sabatha at Radio Freedom? Thank very much.
@@landisomagqaza3602 Hi Landiso - sorry for not replying much earlier. I'd be honoured for you to include the film as a reference in your work. It was published 1991 by Trader Films. Full Title is The Comrade King. I'm sorry, I don;t know where to get the Radio Freedom tapes! I don;t remember how I git it back in 1989. Must have been through the ANC. I would try ANC archives... I'm sure they have them. Radio Freedom was an ANC run station.
I grew up in the Transkei and had no idea of the plight of AbaThembu. This was very touchung.

Thank you - we took liberation songs and applied instrumentation to them. I still find the "squash box" haunting, and the theme song certainly is a mind worm. You must watch a film called "Amandla! A Liberation in Four Part Harmony." Very good film about those songs.

Your grandfather and my grandfather were best of friends and worked closely together 👊🏿
What an interesting documentary, Just wanna ask, had KD not accepted independence and not undermined the legitimate king like Buthelezi did would there still have been an outcry?
I suspect the Apartheid Government would have found someone else to do their bidding. Remember that the Transkei was the first “independent homeland”… it was their role model.
Abathembu nation arent amaXhosa. these are 2 different groups.
My understanding is that AbaThembu adopted the IsiXhosa language and culture, therefor becoming AmaXhosa. But I think you are right that they were not originally AmaXhosa. Sorry, not sure if I've got my Isi's and Ama's right. ;-)
Ama thembu are a tribe that fall under the Xhosa nation
Only KwaBhaca that’s a Kingdom on its own not falling under the Xhosa Kingdom in Eastern Cape
We don't fall under any nation neither tribe we r our own independent dynasty
There’s no such thing as amaxhosa. There never king xhosa. We are Thembu, Mpondomise and so on not xhosa

Hi Alfred. I tried to translate your comment, but I'm struggling. Can you give it to me in English?
@@Transkei_Stories I meant that coup was useless cause the very same gorvement of today is still doing that , he was complaining about the 2million that was coming from Pretoria and other things right , look at Transkei today especially uMtata compared back then it's worse and he is doing nothing about that , he is also enjoying himself in Parliament
@@alfredzikhali6717 Aha - thanks Alfred. Yes, I agree, it's terrible that conditions haven't improved. It's terrible that in many cases there are corrupt and immoral leaders in power. Gen Holomisa and the Transkei was a shining light in 1989 - we were drunk on the spirit of revolution. Our challenges are great but I will always hold the leaders of the anti apartheid movement in high esteem. Keep up the good fight.
@@Transkei_Stories Please could you get more footage out by KD Matanzima. I dont think enough was done to put his side of the story on the table. In the very little air-time he had in this documentary he gives some very striking comments that leadd me to think he had a greater path to prosperity where as his opposition say very little in the way of development. They only opposed Matanzima because he obtained his power from Pretoria, the same Pretoria we must beg for masks now. We cannot even clean our own cities. Dlomo family matters and how they buried each other s not my concern, war is war. I am concerned with the two different ideologies between Matanzima and Mandela (Sabata). All i am saying is that there is more to be said about Matanzima and the Transkei rather than tem just being puppets of Pretoria. I am a Transkei resident myself, an economist that has done extensive research on this matter. Ihave some documents I would like to share with you. Dramatic film-making is what you do now? Well this is one hell of a script for you sir. Please email me LGolimpi@gmail.com
