Blasphemous is a Metroidvania you should play | Cannot be Tamed

- I recently made a video on Metroidvanias I thought people should play and Blasphemous was recommended to me over 100 times. So I played it. Here's what I thought. I played this on XBox One, using the most recent version of the game (as of August 2020) that includes The Stir of Dawn DLC .
#Blasphemous #GameKitchen #metroidvania
Blasphemous was played on and XBox One S and recorded using the system recorder. Music comes from the game soundtrack.

Never thought I'd actually be disturbed by a 2D Metroidvania with a 16-bit aesthetic but then Blashemous came along.
Game Kitchen, the developer, is from my hometown, Seville, at the south of Spain. Most art in the game is inspired in our locals, especially from the baroque period, maybe the most characteristic from our art. There's a lot of inspiration in our holy week specially.
You should take a look to our bridge of Triana, or the Cordoba mosque. I'm sure they'll be familiar for anyone who played the game.
About the game? Not my favourite Metroidvania, and I HATED the spikes too. But it's worth a play.
Seconding the post of my fellow citizen. It's not the best metroidvania game out there but is at least a good one and the aesthetics and combat are great.
Is the game a protest against that sort of thing?
@@mintmag8748 The devs have said they talked to the Catholic folks who still perform the rituals/festivals sorta related to some stuff in the game and those folks said they loved the game. Seems like a tribute to compassionate secular culture in Spain that non-religious developers can make such a game and the religious folks don't react negatively.
@@GradyKallenbach Do you have a link or something. I would very much like to see that.
@@mintmag8748 www.google.com/amp/s/darkrpgs.home.blog/2019/09/20/interview-with-the-game-kitchen-the-spanish-team-behind-the-dark-metroidvania-blasphemous/amp/
The artwork is absolutely incredible. I'd buy the game based on that alone, in fact I just did.
Enjoy!
I just purchased this game on the Nintendo eshop for the switch for $6.39. A steal. The game looks sinister. I cant wait to play it
The bosses in this game were next level. Loved the artwork
It's one of my favorite games of all time, I've finished the game but now I've ascend it to start over (with a higher difficulty and access to new areas and the new bosses "Amanhecidas").
I honestly don't get into these games, however the artwork, aesthetics and music may make this the one that pulls me down the rabbit hole. Everyone remembers their first.
Same! I got right into it after thinking Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit, Super Mario, Sonic were a relic of my yesteryear. They still are, but Blasphemous pulled me in for a good 2 weeks or so. Didn't love it, but didn't hate it. I pushed myself to get the majority of secrets and PS trophies through gritted teeth. I tend to think I love the grimess of it all. Reminds me a bit of the oppressiveness of the old PSX game, Vagrant Story...
I had the same thing with Sekiro. Hate the on paper mechanics of Souls-likes, after only ever playing the first 2 hours of Bloodborne and fucking hating it! Rage-quitting and will never play it again! But was able to Platinum Sekiro under self-applied duress, lol. Finished Sword Saint Isshin twice.
I never get tired of seeing my work in the background of your videos! Thank you again!
Also this game rules, still figuring out how I feel about the sequel
Sold. Thanks, Pam. 🙂 Also, thanks for just continuing to make great game videos while the world falls apart. It's a treat every time something new from you shows up in the feed.
Blasphemous had a LOT of quality of life improvements in the latest patch, both the new map screen and the hability to teleport between save points made backtracking and completion A LOT easier!
Over all is a fantastic game
Glad you finally played this game. It's good to spread this game for metroidvania's lovers
Thank you for such a thought-out, fair review of a game I’ve been looking to get for years now. I like that you included your completion percentage compared to hours played. Very helpful!
You’re welcome! Apparently the final (free) dlc to the game is coming out in December. If you’ve waited this long, you might want to wait a few more months.
@@Cannotbetamed1 excellent advice! I did not know there'd be DLC. Excellent, I'll wait a bit then! :)
@@awake1251 Actually, I don't recommend that you wait until the last DLC comes out to play the game for the first time. That is because it's implied that the new content will be post-game so it's very probable that one has to be at the end of the game to access it. Would be better to start the game now (or 2 weeks before the dlc releases) to have a save file prepared for the dlc when it comes out.
This game was definitely a challenge. I spent a lot of time grinding on this one and loved it
I came across this channel when the angry video game nerd plugged a bunch of channels with the Aladdin game adapter. I watched a couple of them, but Pam's breakdown's and reviews really resonate with my own interest and experience in video games have been.....so I've been binging for the past few days on the majority of the videos here! Keep up the amazing work and I hope you reach 1 million subs very soon!!!!
I finally got around to playing Blasphemous a couple of weeks ago. This game actually pulled me away from Astalon: Tears of the Earth. It's that good. It feels like a nice spin on the Castlevania side of Metroidvanias, and perhaps the only thing it's missing is RPG elements since the upgrade system is merely okay to me. The aesthetics and imagery definitely remind me of Dark Souls, and the music reminds me of medieval folk. I can't believe I got this for $8.
Got a Switch copy from Limited Run, and beat it a month or so ago. Great review, and spot on with my experience. I'm excited to try the DLC & NG+.
Have fun!
Thanks Pam! You talked me into this game. Love Metroidvanias!
Hope you enjoy it!
I love how you change the framed art in the background every time. It's the little things that set you apart. Keep it up Pamma-jamma!
Just went back and finished the NG+ plus and the new DLC the other day and loved it just as much the second time through as I did the first. Really hope they make a sequel would love to see what new mechanics and gameplay options they could add.
The point about how relic abilities are based around the environment rather than the player is one of my favorite points to bring up when I talk about this game (aside from the cultural influences). I think those abilities are so unique and fascinating and add a lot of depth to the gameplay, and it's something that I haven't seen nearly enough people bring up in a meaningful way, so I was really glad to see that specifically mentioned here! Unlocking the golden cloth that allows you to fall down what appeared to be bottomless pits to the areas below was totally mind-blowing for me.
I really liked how they handled the new abilities, it's a different approach that I think worked very well.
I just saw your review, and I picked this game up. I’m excited to play it, and thanks for the video.
Absolutely loved this one, the aesthetic is amazing. I really want to get back and do the NG+ run at some point to see all the new, undoubtedly grotesque, additions.
I want to try NG+ too. One day
@@Cannotbetamed1 more inventive for NG+ there's five extra bosses exclusive to it.
@@zestycrunchman602 Seriously? NICE!!!
@@TheReasonableLiberal-hn2rs Yeah they're really fun too.
This is a great video for newcomers to this game! Good explaining which made me want to finish it. Thank you for this!
This is an exceedingly informative, well crafted, and nuanced review. Thank you very much. I was not quite sure what to make of this game; now I'll presumably check it out at some point.
Thank you, I'm glad the review was helpful.
Great review. I also agree that most of the boss fights were easy but if you beat Crisanta on your first or second try you’re a beast. Took me quite a few tries to finish her. Harder than the final boss.
Crisanta took 5 or 6 tries. I didn't even remember that parrying was an ability I had for my first couple attempts.
Thank you, Pam. I might pick this up. I love Metroidvanias.
Just picked this up on sale for $10, I am really enjoying it so far. Thank you for the spoiler free review.
No problem, glad you're liking the game.
I saw the review for the game here...i am glad that i found blasphemous ♥️
I like it when I watch a review of a game and then discover I somehow already own it (probably as part of a Humble Bundle). Nice breakdown. I feel inspired to give a try now.
Hope you like it
been wanting to play Catholicvania since the trailer dropped, this review might have convinced me
Its one of the best and craziest metroidvanias I have ever played.
You should absolutely play it! Artstyle is top notch in my opinion in general its a top package
I think I know what to buy when the payday comes around... Catholicvania, that's a catchy name.
last faith is bomb
Nice name. For a world with more Catholicvanias!
I've had this game on my Steam wishlist since it came out. I think this particular review has convinced me it's high time I bought it.
Have fun!
I've been wanting to play this for months now but still can't find any time.
The imagery and subject matter are right up my alley and from what I could hear in straight out gameplay video's the music is beautifully crafted as per the period of it's setting.
Definitely one I'll one day play. Excellent review Pam 👍
Thanks! The soundtrack is so good, it's even worth listening to on it's own.
@@Cannotbetamed1
Definitely can't argue with that 👍
Another games music I ended up playing even when driving was from the game *Braid* , I think that was about 12 years ago 🤗
Thank you for this video. I've waked up, found this and after realizing how many good elements this game has this was and instant buy. Greetings from Madrid!
Hello! Enjoy the game.
Thanks for covering this, I probably wouldn't have bothered looking at it otherwise. The art is amazing! idk why having a tedious start has become a trope of modern metroidvanias. The classic games - Super Metroid, SotN, Cave Story - are wonderful from the very start.
I find SotN pretty tedious at first. And I'm still waiting for Cave Story to get good 2 hours in.
Oh really! I loved both from the start, the dialog in Cave Story always kept me wondering what's next. I forget if you've played Axiom Verge but that's another one which captivated me right from room one. I actually think Axiom Verge is the best game to come out since Portal 2.
difficult and punishing is blasphemous! LOL. The art work is entreging and thought provoking. The game play isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but I'd enjoy watching someone play it. As an aspiring indie game developer, its great to see an enjoyably challenging beautiful thought provoking game.
Nice one Pam, I forgot I saw someone stream a bit of this and wanted it right away. Thanks for the reminder and further confirmation that it's worth getting!
No problem :)
this game is frequently on sale.
Also glad that you did a follow-up video to the other Metroidvania one.
Also... "the peninent man shall pass."
The platforming still can be touchy when it wants. Not grabbing a ledge, missing a jump as the floor doesnt fully extend to where the pixels show, many many times of a ladder not being grabbed.
Just finished this thing. It had this weird feeling of frustrating you just enough to make you want to show it who's boss. It managed to be addicting without necessarily always being fun. The impulse to find all the little secrets, the map and the really cool art were the best parts. The cripplingly long animations that slowed you down in boss fights were the most frustrating part.
I like her style. To the point, informative and not facetious.
Thanks!
This is one of the more recent ones I have been interested in, i love the aesthetic in this one
It's great mate. Pick it up, you won't be sorry.
Amazing review! Your channel deserves way more subscribers
Thank you
This is the video that convinced me to buy it on Switch. I have FALLEN IN LOVE with this game.
I did too. I couldn't stop playing it.
This game is great and I'm glad you listened to the comments. The DLC made this game go from great to epic. They still have to do another patch to fix the rewards for completing the Penitences, but it will not affect the overall game play. Buy this immediately if you haven't played this yet.
Fun video. Beautiful game.
Your Paradise Lost comment blew my mind.
It's honestly one of the more disturbing ones I've played, but also the most addictive
Thanks Pam! Another one to add to my rapidly expanding metroidvania list :D Not quite finished the mummy demastered after the last video.
How are you liking it?
@@Cannotbetamed1 It's really good. It's a faithful homage to Super Metroid in many ways. The sprites and environments are beautiful.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Forgot to mention - presuming you're a similar age to me and therefore grew up in the 90s, I would totally love to see your thoughts on my recent open tag video: 5 things you miss from the 90s. I think it would be interesting to hear the Canadian perspective on life and gaming back then!
I tried to read the divine comedy myself (English translation not in the original Italian). I was able to follow it loosely but I found myself looking up historical information in an attempt to determine why each of named denizens of hell found themselves in their respective circles.
Great video as always Pam!
Thanks!
Yet another great review of a game that has been sitting in my backlog since it released! Your video remindes me of the impressive and immersive pixel art and I’m glad you enjoyed it a lot. I need to give it a try asap
I hope you like it
Okay, you had me at Paradise Lost and Lucifer taking the hero's journey. I could honestly talk about that for days. The closest character and game series that I truly feel captures that particular sentiment and vibe was Kain from the Blood Omen games. Not only the story and themes but the writing and the voice acting. "And if Mobius told you I was hidden on the underside of hell would you throw yourself into oblivion to pursue me?" Like listening to Shakespeare... *sigh* That one still hurts.
Great review. I have seen his one on Steam a few times and considered it. Will take another look and add to wish list.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the game if you decide to pick it up
Holy Hell, this looks great! I've never even heard of it before, thanks for the recommendation
No problem :)
I'm not sure how I missed this game, but I'm so glad you reviewed it! I just tried the demo, and if the full game wasn't $25, I'd have bought it right away. Time to wait for a Steam sale!
I hope it goes on sale soon for you
It’s half off on the Switch at the moment, if you have that ($12.49...for 1 more day I think)
I played it through two or three times during my first install, which is certainly the best endorsement i can give a game. However, i got it early when it was first released, and the platforming was murder. I've been meaning to revisit it since the patches - watching your review reminds me that i should see how much has changed!
Great review.
Thanks! I'm looking forward to a replay when the final DLC comes out next month.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Your level of engagement with your viewers is astonishing. I think you've responded to every one of my comments, even when i'm commenting on older videos like this (i only recently discovered your channel, and since your game preferences seem to match up so well to my own, i've been going through your older reviews). You've earned a new patron. Keep up the great content - i'm happy to have stumbled upon your channel.
I've been intrigued to play this for quite some time. Waiting for complete package < $15. I've got a backlog.
Thanks for the review!
No problem
I'm glad you got to this one. I was gonna recommend it on the Metroidvanias video, but I saw you mention some knowledge of it, so I figured you already had. Gorgeous game. Not perfect, but extremely good anyway
I discovered your channel yesterday with your "top 10 metroidvanias", and in my head I was like "no Blasphemous !??"
And then the day after you upload a 10 min video about this awesome game. Nice work 👌
Thanks!
Yay I love this game, thank you for making a Video on it!
No problem! I enjoyed playing it so much.
I still have no clue why I haven't picked up Blasphemous. Your review has made me realize I need to get it.
I really like the aesthetics of this one... So disturbing and yet so beautiful! Thanks for the great review!
My pleasure!
A great metroidvania is Enviromental Station Alpha! It's full of mystery and has an air of silent dread about it. Really, a great atmospheric game, with fantastic bosses. A shout out also to the amazing sound design.
I watched all of this video totally concentrated on the beauty and hypnosis of your beautiful voice perfectly combined with the dark ambience of the music of this game. Loved it!!
I'm happy you reviewed this wonderful game thank you for listening to your viewers. Next do Arkista's Ring nes. Lol
This looks amazing and right up my alley. Thank you for the review!
No problem :)
Thanks Pam! Never even heard of this game. It looks awesome
Hope you enjoy it if you play it.
As of 9/5/20 to I believe 9/8/20 this game is on sell on Steam for $12.49 (american) and at about 3 hours in I feel that the game is more than worth its price. There is also a free demo you can download to try first. Never heard of this game before, or your channel, but so glad I came across this review! I am quite enjoying the game a good bit and I wont lie, being a bit of an edge lord myself and having grown up in a Catholic family makes this game all the more enjoyable in a sick kind of way.
Great review and a very good recommendation. Thank you for bringing this game to our attention!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video, and are liking the game!
Wow!!! I'm so going to try this one!!! Thanks for this review!
No problem
Been following your channel for a long time; but this is the first time I felt your review style and game choice matched up so well with excellent footages of the game. Everything in your presentation just seemed to work so well here. This is my favorite review you've done. Excellent job 👍
Also, thank you for introducing me to such an awesome looking game!
Thanks! I always aim to have the footage reflect what I’m saying at the time.
Thank you for reviewing this one! I was wondering if I might like it, and I trust your reviews the most 😊
:)
Another great video> This game has been on my pick up list for awhile and i think im gonna pull the trigger and buy it now.
Have fun!
I got this earlier this year, I didn't get it during launch since I was busy with a lot of other games, even though the trailers and art-style intrigued me. I'm glad I eventually got it, I beat it over a week with about the same result as you had, about 98% of the map with 19 hours of gameplay.
It surprised me that the devs released a free expansion recently, all the more reason to dive back in. All-in-all I was quite happy with this game, out of the ones that borrow some mechanics from the Souls games I thought this was one of the more forgiving ones combat-wise and also easier and faster to get started.
I agree! Hearing a game referred to as Souls-like really does nothing for me, but I liked this one.
@@Cannotbetamed1 I don't mind the Souls games per se (although I never finished any of them) but at this point too many studios have dipped their toes into this territory. It's getting stale to hear the description it's a "souls-like but...", usually followed by one or two small differentials. It doesn't do anything for me.
That's where I found that Blasphemous did well, it has some inspiration, but it's closer to a Metroidvania than a Souls. It blends those elements well enough, it became more distinctive as a result.
one of my favorite newer games, great ost as well
i picked up this game because of this review. _good stuff._
Awesome :)
Really liked how creative a lot of the bossfights are
Thanks Pam, I really enjoyed your review
I checked out the demo at this game a while ago and the music was great and art was great but the game was really hard. Somebody on Twitter told me that they’ve tweaked the difficulty for the game recently and I picked it up and it was on sale for 10 bucks. Looking forward to playing it
Have fun!
Never heard of this one. Looks cool. Thanks.
do it
the parry makes the combats so much easier, you can beat almost anything without moving just by parrying and countering
i can't believe you didn't use this vital mechanic xD
also i loved the platform sequences i went through during my first run, and have mastered Miriam's challenges
it requires time to figure out a few things but once you get used to the movement system, any challenge becomes almost easy, as if developpers knew how players would move across certain areas
i noticed the level design to be very well done in terms of how to get from room to room, without giving much opportunity to break sequences and i find it cool to see things i can only get later by going around and activating something
I played and beat this game thanks for to your review. It was challenging and great.
Glad you enjoyed it!
*Thank you very much for that in-depth review, Pam!* ❤
I got this one on the PS4 summer sale for twelve bucks. Definitely a good game, and worth the price.
I've played a little of it on NG+ but haven't made it to the dlc content yet. It's much harder on NG+. I am _NOT_ looking forward to fighting that bullet-hell boss with the melty face again. That was the hardest part of the game for me, first time through.
I want to try NG+ but I’ll probably take a little break first.
The dark gothic style reminds me of Gynoug. Thank you for a really insightful review.
I’m glad Best Buy got Switch copies. I’m not a fan of pre ordering games. Really fun game.
I got my copy from limited run, well so did best buy but I'd rather lock in an order than roll the dice at best buy, but if you found it there hell yeah!
Nice! I have noticed for over a year now that Best Buy has had a wider variety of switch games than other major outlets. In fact, they're probably the only outlet outside of buying from the Limited Run website itself to have a good amount of games.
Ok now you got me interested, it looks so gothic and murky. I should add this to my list soon. Also, incredible eyeshadow today, queen!
Thanks :)
Alrighty, I'm sold. Risk of Rain 2 was pretty fun, but this seems more up my alley.
Oh my god ! Right behind you there's the box for the Lands of Lore game ! I had long forgotten the name of this game, which I used to play all the time on my step-father's computer as a child ! Wow ! Unfortunately, he passed away in 2018, but I have a lot of bittersweet memories of us playing games such as this and Full Throttle together.
Also, Blasphemous is top-tier. I beat it and all of its DLC challenges last week.
Lands of Lore is such a good game, my favorite of those kinds of dungeon crawlers.
I just finished it myself. 19 hours. This review is spot on. The combat is reasonably challenging without being frustrating. But like most people, I agree that there are WAY too many spike pits. I'm surprised there's no relic that lets you survive them.
day one you could walk on the spike if you fall on them during s.
But sometime you would die while going out and the game would set you ghost location directly into the spike.
Hope it was patched tho.
I love the Alex Cherry piece, used to have that as my desktop wallpaper years ago.
The music and iconography hooked me. I have a Catholic background, so I recognized a ton of the references. It is an amazing game.
i got this game for free on steam recently from a friend! now that i have seen this video and review it makes me wanna try this game now!
Found you recently...and subscribed..really like your vids and the way you talk and present the games and you opinion.I'll look forward for your future videos!
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
I just bought this based on your review. Never stop reviewing games!
Hope you enjoy it
Definitely adding this on my list of games to check out. I’m still playing through Ghost of Tsushima presently.
You won't be disappointed
Wow This game looks impressive! And i love that boss @ 08:13 And cool to hear a shout out to Prince Of Persia! That game is tough, Spike pits and all!
Haha, I hate Prince of Persia
Thanks for the review i think i will try this out
Hope you like it!
Yeah! Pam is a Divine Comedy fan. That book is one of the big reasons I went with a literature degree in college. See also: Canterbury Tales.
I could handle The Divine Comedy but Canterbury Tales was incomprehensible to me.
New DLC dropped just weeks ago. Def need to revisit this game.
This would be a great game to play for the upcoming spooky season. The bosses look epic too
I originally planned to make this an October video, but I lack patience and self control.
Cannot be Tamed I understand completely 😂😂. Have a great weekend 🤟
I told you. Glad you liked it. You might have pointed out that you played Blasphemous with its free DLC "Stir of Dawn", but other than that, great review to a great game. I didn't find Blasphemous difficult either and even if I didn't mind the spike pits too much, I can understand why some people hate them. Hopefully, I come around to play the DLC as well sometime in the near future. The last time I checked my installation, the DLC wasn't available. Maybe it's time exclusive to Steam, I have the GOG version?
Oh, I assumed the dlc was out everywhere. I played it on xbox, so I don’t know about the pc versions.
Just saw that the DLC comes to gog on Sept 1, so soon!
Awesome. Thanks for the hint. Have a nice weekend, Pam.
Blasphemous is a only game where I've been so enchanted by the story, art style and music that I overlooked and even had a blast with the... not so interesting gameplay. Tried a second run through (swapped switches lost save data) to get to NG+ DLC but nah couldn't do it.
Your voice rocks! Id love to see a collab with you and Sphere Hunter
Thanks! Sphere Hunter is cool, I don't think she knows I exist :P
