Holley is a good carb but the numerous passages are a real challenge to keep clean.

Best way to clean the crud off the carb body is a soft ss wire wheel for your die grinder be it pneumatic or electric. Cleans off easy and doesn't damage the aluminum.

The older the vehicle, the stickier the parts and pieces. I was drawn to your video because I AM a 1958 model. Anything that can be repaired and put back into use at MY age is a well-made item in my book. Your approach is interesting and gives others permission to dig in and get grease under the fingernails. I've enjoyed the old cars and trucks of a bygone era for much the same reasons as you working to save the '58 Merc', and a gift to your wife is definitely a great reason! Looking forward to seeing you hit the road, so good luck!

Looks like you gained a couple hundred subscribers this week…keep at it! Looking forward to seeing the first start. You’re right, no better feeling in the world than getting something fired up that has sat for years. Here’s a couple quick tips for carb cleaning, get yourself a gallon of Chem-Dip and give it a good soak before starting to disassemble and then again once you have it apart. A soda blaster works great for getting old gasket remnants and stubborn gunk from the little nooks and crannies without damaging delicate carb surfaces. Search DIY soda blaster, you can make one on the cheap with a basic Harbor Freight air gun.

Love the specific tech terms on the carburetor. Oh I can't wait to use the blow torch gasket remover method. Nice touch. Great channel.

For stubborn gaskets I use a chisel made for wood working. About an inch wide. Use it to slice the old gasket material off. Just have to go slow so you don't slice off some of the carb too. I hope to see the results of your rebuild and watch you adjust the mixture. I've got a 4180C on an '83 Mercury Capri that I need to adjust.

I have no idea if you’ll see this, but I found a 58 Turnpike Cruiser on Marketplace. It’s best for parts, but it’s $1500 in Casco Michigan if you want to go get it

That's actually a 4150 Holley, as it has two full metering blocks. The 4160 has a smaller metering block in the rear, that is covered by the rear fuel bowl.

Holley makes an upgraded externally adjusted float bowl for the 4160. I guess the pre 2970's version didnt have that.

Did you replace the diaphragm in secondary opening control ? They usually rot. Easy to replace.

That's the metering block only on the primary or the 780 has 2 metering blocks 62 jets is a good match for the y block

I would have been better to soak soak all the parts in a gallon can of carb cleaner overnight. The metering blocks are hard to clean out.
I think even the main body would git in the can.
