    I always use smoughs hammer, I usually bait people into thinking I can only swing once, but I have enough for 3 swings and a roll, 3 hits is usually enough to kill.

    The hammers are good, if you see someone wearing metal plate armor like the knight set or havel's set (anything that isn't mostly cloth or leather) the hammers are going to be doing more damage since the armor doesn't protect against strike as well as it does again thrust and slash damage. Which is why I usually carry a mace with me for those situations.

    Just as a general question, can you switch mid air strike with the smough's hammer to a weapon with longer range? Seems like a good way of securing damage.

    • @solidmoon8266
      @solidmoon8266 8 років тому

      no you cant. You have to complete the attack or cancel before you can switch weapons. Since you cant cancel mid air you gotta go with what you have out.

    Cool video but atm a lot of the giant weapons have oversized hitboxs. The wouldnt even come close to hitting you but it damages you anyway. Some players are abusing this and it ruins appreciation for the ulta greatswords, great axe, and great hammer.

  • @Psiberzerker
    @Psiberzerker 7 років тому

    Breathe. Let your stamina recover, and don't get greedy. If you want to spam attacks, then go Dex, and pick lighter weapons. If you want to go strength/heavy, stop to catch your breath every once in a while.
    (Instead of the Swei, I would demonstrate the Berserk Greatsword. It matches the challenge better. The Swei is an awesome weapon, though.)

    • @TankEpidemic
      @TankEpidemic 8 років тому +2

      Parries are already sketchy on a good connection. Learn how to play without relying on parries. If you see that your opponent is predictable and has a good connection then you can attempt to parry. If not, utilize the lag to try for roll catches or surprise attacks.

    this may be a noob question but what is the super armor he keeps referring to?

    • @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore
      @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore  8 років тому +2

      Starting about halfway through the animation of swinging specific weapons (greathammers, ultragreatswords, etc.), you are no longer able to be staggered. If someone hits you while you're in this super armor state, they'll deal full damage but your attack will not be interrupted. Their animation won't finish by the time yours does, so if you get hit while in super armor you're basically guaranteed to get 1-2 hits (depending on your weapon) in exchange.

      brandon winstanley I tend to agree lately, especially for higher level builds. At around levels 100-120 I think it's a definite upgrade, and even a consideration at lower levels.

  • @rhaastafarian7981

    Would you consider these three the premier weapons of their respective classes?

    • @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore
      @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore  8 років тому

      +MemeLover 420 I think if you specifically build for using the Dragonslayer Greataxe, it's the best in the Greataxe category. The Zweihander is good, but I doubt it's the best (and I don't have much other experience in the weapon category). Smough's Hammer is likely not the best Greathammer.

      +i never thought a name could be this long (watt) What woulda good build for the dragonslayer greataxe look like ? i'm new to dark souls but i love heavy weapons like these.Also your videos are awesome keep it up man.

    • @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore
      @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore  8 років тому +1

      +ElfenS0uL It has C scaling in strength and D in faith, so 40str/40faith is good for a mid level build. If you want to stay on the lower side, you can just go with 40 strength 22 vit 22 end (+Prisoner's Chain) with the Warrior starting class. That would put you at a soul level of 49, 1000 HP unembered, and still around 500 AR. It also has E scaling in dex, so if you want to go very high level and max your damage, you can go 40str/40dex/40fth, but you won't see as much damage returned as with the other stats.

  • @DrPastah
    @DrPastah 8 років тому

    Are slow/heavy weapons not doable at low levels without HP and stamina?

    • @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore
      @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore  8 років тому +2

      As long as you have enough HP to trade hits, it should be fine (and the lower level you are, the less damage they'll deal in the trade). Stamina becomes a significant limiter at lower levels in my opinion, and I recommend trying to min-max it to some extent (maybe increase your endurance 1 level at a time until you have just enough stamina to swing the weapon however many times you want). It's not necessary, but there will be a 1 END level difference between, say, 2 swings and 3, which can make a big difference.

    • @DrPastah
      @DrPastah 8 років тому +1

      So endurance > HP when first leveling? I'm leveling strength so I can use stronger/heavier weapons as I only have 26 strength so far.
      I am using the great machete. I find it impossible to catch players that are running away as I can never hit them while they're running. I just seem to run out of stamina, and I'm unable to stop players from healing & rolling. I tried using charged heavy attacks, but I never reach.
      Also don't you need good armor to trade hits?

    • @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore
      @name_cant_be_that_long_anymore  8 років тому +2

      I would favor higher endurance over HP on a lower level pure strength build, but your mileage may vary. Don't be afraid to use respecs to try out different stat combinations and find what suits you best.
      Unfortunately, while heavy weapons are some of the most fun to use, their massive drawback is that a player that knows how to deal with them can easily never get hit just by knowing how to roll through every single attack. Do your best to abuse gimmicks (plunging attacks on staircases, for example) and various parts of the map to your advantage. However, if you encounter someone that you just can't hit, you might want a faster strength-scaling weapon on the side (heavy-infused Dark Sword comes to mind, but there are other options). It kind of runs counter to the point of the build, but against some people it's necessary :/
      For the most part, as long as you have a piece of armor equipped in each slot, you'll be fine for trading hits against slower weapons. They should only be able to hit you once in exchange for two of your own hits, at which point armor isn't the determining factor in who's taking more damage.

    Video could also be titled "If you die to a strength weapon it's because you did something stupid"

    • @Vanlens
      @Vanlens 8 років тому

      That can be used i nearly every scenario thou. If you die in a pvp fight it's probably because you made a mistake.

    • @eight216
      @eight216 8 років тому

      Yaxion Getting lag stabed by any given thrusting weapon isn't due to a mistake on your end.
      Choosing not to parry a specific attack that's supposedly "an easy parry" but will one shot your ass isn't due to a mistake.
      Getting hit mid roll isn't because you made a mistake.
      Getting parried on reaction and one shotted because hornet ring isn't because you made a mistake.
      Getting 3v1d and dying is usually not because you made a mistake.
      Now you can go ahead and argue that anything resulting in loss is the product of a personal mistake ("wah you should be better at parrying") but there is if nothing else a reasonable amount of skill that can be expect from most players in that they don't get hit by heavy ass strength weapons like that unless they're bad or unlucky. Lighter faster weapons are much easier to get hits with and much harder to punish.
      TL;DR- i'm complaining about the fast weapon meta and the over all imbalance of the game that's lead to me basically putting it aside.

    • @Vanlens
      @Vanlens 8 років тому

      eight216 I never have a problem with lag, And i've only had one death where i think it was due to server latency. Light weapons are powerful, yes, but heavy weapons can be just as powerful if you know how to use them right. Because unlike fast weapons, the heavy weapons have hyper armour. Which is basicly this game's version of poise. But i don't know. I play with slow weapons all the time, and once you get the hang of them they aren't that underpowered.. Especially weapons like the Dragonslayer Greataxe, or Yhorm's Great Machete. If you die while using a slow weapon, it's because you didn't time your hyper-armour properly, or was too predictable with your attacks.

    • @eight216
      @eight216 8 років тому

      Yaxion See that's what i'm saying.... although admittedly i've never used those weapons so i prehaps could learn a thing or two, amid a limited number of moves it's not terribly hard for a good player to predict you and not get hit considering the swing time.

    • @Vanlens
      @Vanlens 8 років тому

      eight216 Just remember to change it up. delay your attacks with R2, use your weaponart if it's any good. Jumping attacks, and so on. It's really not too bad once you get to know your weapon better.
