- Some chickens like to be petted, some would rather be undisturbed, and surprisingly, the way they are petted also is a factor. In this video our chickens react to various forms of petting.

If my girls see a lap, they’re going to jump up and sit on it and wait for petting. It’s so funny!🤣
Petting chickens is always fun for me; I miss my chickens. I had this one Ameraucana hen I called Mocha, who looks like Pepper, who’d drop what she was doing every time I came out so she could get pets and let me pick her up.

Mine liked to hop on my lap and be petted on the back. If I stopped they'd peck at me to keep doing it.
I'm pretty sure if we did breed them to be pets, chicken would surprise us in just a few generations.

For many years I had a pet pigeon. She absolutely loved to be petted. I like all birds.

You can tell Pepper likes being petted. I used to have a couple hens that would lower their body and slink away out from under my hand when I petted them, so I considered naming one of them, "Lindsey Low-Hen".

Every time I feel sad, I watch how comfortable and happy Pepper looks here and relax in the idea of life still allowing those beautiful moments
Thank you for sharing. Yes, they can be very therapeutic. I can watch them for hours and it has the same effect as meditation.
Every time I feel sad I pet my chickens and ducks.
Not that I'm anticipating feeling sad in the future, but I just bought 10 ducklings today.

Some of our chickens don't care for being pet, but don't fuss about it. Some simply ignore it and keep about whatever they were doing. And some seem to love it. But I find that no matter the case, those who come and visit (the people) always love it. LOL Most end up giggling and turn into children no matter their age. Cheers!
My hens love one hand underneath from the front. Supporting them while the other hand pets the back. They run over to peck and scratch my feet for pets, its so adorable. Sometimes if you put your hands under their wings like she does here, and use your thumbs to gently massage the back muscles, they love that too.
We know that petting our chickens means they will expect more than just a pet. They follow you around until you sit and then they’re in your lap demanding more love. As soon as we got our chicks, they were snuggled and loved and talked to. Sometimes I wonder if they even know that their chickens, more like a little kid he wants affection. They follow you around and it’s not always for a snack. Many times once one chicken jumps in my lap. I’ll get at least two more and they’ll have a nice little chat while they get their snuggles
I had a pet chicken named Feathers. She enjoyed sitting on my lap & getting petted while I watched TV.
In fact she often times demanded I pet her, by pecking at me when I stopped.
Acted very much like my cats in that regard.

People do not realize than chicken are loving pet, and not just walking meat. When they have a chance to express their personality in normal living condition, their are way much smarter than people think. They recognize their name and are as loyal as dogs can be.
She was waiting for more pet. you can put more pressure on their neck and head, they really love it since they are more rough when preening themselves. You can also give them treat, using earthworm. They love that too and can eat by hand. 🙂
My hen was called "Cou Brillant" aka "Brillant Neck" I was 6 years old, so, spare me on her name. All my sisters have ones too (I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers) They were too young for laying eggs, but already have their adult feathers. They were beautiful ! Gold and orange with touch of black. They have our leftover, raw wheat, and of course grass. At first we keep them in a scoop of 3 meters tall, 3 meters length, and 2 meters width, with straw and ponders on the side full of straw and fake soft feathers. Their enclosure was a large circle of 6 meters wide build from the door of the scoop who was under the house roof. (were you still can parks cars under it) When they were more tame, bigger, and have the habit to lay eggs inside the scoop, we leave the door open. We had a 2.500m² land as back ward garden, "close" with a hedge. To call them, we hit a pan with a big metal spoon while screaming "kokokokoko !" And we saw them running like hell because it was the signe for raw wheat time and they love it !
I waited 20 years to get chickens and I am like a kid every time I go out there! They look forward to hearing my voice and seeing me and I couldn’t be happier!! Had them 2 days after hatching!!
Aww.. my chickens turned 4 years this month and I still feel so much joy every time just sitting outside with them and watching them.
Two of mine Ginny and Ally when I pick them up they stretch their neck out and lean toward me. It's precious.

When I was little we had chickens. There was a Rhode Island Red hen that would let me hold it while I would swing all the time. 😃
Turkeys are some of the best birds to pet. Some will slink away but some will sit down for you.
Yeah but they can be pretty mean too and super dangerous, especially to kids. Caution should be exercised.

Pepper looks a lot like my bantam and other breed crossbreed, I can not find out the other, but she's a bantam. They have the same coloration, but raven is smaller. Raven always runs up to me when I go into the coop, feeding on the ground as I protect her, she lets me pick her up and she doesn't hesitate, she doesn't usually run away to petting either. she's really sweet, and she grew up with me!

Yeah, chickens are really sweet and cute. My chicken, Lil Red, snuck into our house in the middle of the night using the dog door and she just walked in my room and slept on me! 😂😂
some of our birds loved it when we petted them from their heads to the back of their necks
they were good birds, we even had 2 roosters who were also just as friendly and were friends with each other aswell. one was a big softie and the other was a wee softie :3

I have 3 chickens, they all love chin scratches and being petting on their chest area. They will jump up and perch on my arms and cluck at me.
Mine don't mind being scooped up from the underside. They feel secure when supported from underneath.

I have a Polish hen her name is Diller named after Phyllis Diller and she scratches at my shoes because she wants me to pick her up and cuddle and pet her! My two Wyandottes Hennessy and Henrietta shudder and refluff themselves when I pet them lol and my younger Polish Goldlaced is so scared so hoping she stops being so skitchy and she chases my dog Shannon
I used to grab one of the chickens and put in my coat during the winter or cold months. At first she fought to get out but eventually she found warmth in my coat. She stayed in while I checked to see all the hens got back in their home. I added more feed to the feeder and cleaned up/added fresh water to the water feeder. When I was done, I put the hen down from my goat. This hen felt as if she was “drunk”. 😅 The next day I came back to collect the hens back to their home, the hen that I grabbed, ran toward me and stood, waiting for me to pick her up. 💕🐔 So sweet of her. I love hugging the hens and I always called them my babies!

Since my beloved husband passed away, I decided to give up but I still kept until they’re gone. I hired to destroy the chicken house and coop. To make a long short my friend told me that he planned to send his 2 “retired” hens. I was very upset and forced him to give me his hens. Finally he gave me 3 hens. I didn’t have a cage or house for them. I had to build the cages for them in my garage. 2 of the passed away last Jan. The last one is very lonesome. I visit Bald 3 to 4 times daily. Due to her respiratory problems, her vet suggested she stay in the small bathroom when I take a shower. So I also add humidifier for my baby to breathe during the night. Anyway, whenever I come to clean her home, she begs for me to carry or hold her! 😊💝

I have had and I still have some hens but mostly roosters that I can carry in one palm of my hand while they lay on it sideways and they don't move... so yeah, chickens can be pretty awesome🥰

M'y mother have 2 hens, and they sink but dont move away, its the opposite. If they see her, they just come and lay down close to be petted, they became dogs lol

I used to own Degus. Totally different animal, but they are said to be shy and don't like petting or being held. Mine liked it enough that after the petting I tried to put them back in their home, but they refused. The started squealing and shaking their tails, clinging onto my clothes with their little claws. It was really odd but nice to see though.

I would think hens have a issue with being pet on their backs. My guess would be because they associate it with a rooster jumping on their backs. Just a guess

So my mom bought a few chicks for the hell of it, figured that we'd have some roasted chicken in a few months. Feed them twice a day.
Flash forward six months later and now my mom let them flightless bird into the house because they always greet her whenever she went home. And somehow she also managed to potty train them.

@@rcnelson When I was a kid, I would sometimes have them sleep next to me, and they never crapped in the bed. I put a towel down just in case, but they always held it till I let them out.
My rooster lets me pet him however and he'll just sleep, clean himself, eat a snack. He's just enjoying it all. I can even flip him or carry him under my arm and he won't tense up, just lets his feet dangle all floppy. 😂 my mom thinks it's cute that he's trusting but I've had him from the day he hatched.
Chickens aren't particularly intelligent creatures but they CAN be utterly mesmerizing. Funny critters :)

Pepper is an EE, an Easter egg, they are very personal and they enjoy being around people, it is not unlike them to jump in your lap if you’re sitting outside. The orange chicken could have been an Orpington.

There's petting, and then there's tickling. Nearly 100% of animals do not like tickling because it feels like an annoying bug on them. Pet with enough pressure that they know it's a pet and not a fly!
Chickens have very thin and sensitive skin. But they also have feathers protecting it. Peppers feathers were reacting to a tickling sensation and, as if she understood this game, she laid down on her side to make it stop so she could carry on. All things in perspective.
