My mom was born in Magdalena in 1939 and my grandmother taught special ed in Datil and Quemado for a few years in the 70s. Good memories of that area. Thank you for the tour.

When my Mother was a young girl she lived in Pie Town in the 30's. They lived in a half dugout outside of town, my Grandfather had a few head of cattle and a big garden, I'm sure that they also did some farming.

Awesome sandstone formations with panoramic views. The drop from the top made my legs weak, it was a little scary.
Enjoyed the little towns, some looked as though frozen in time.
You would think Pie Town made some awesome pies after its name sake but sadly none, too bad.🍰
    Magdalena Town was charming.
Thanks for inviting us to visit cool new places today.
    Rest and enjoy your evening

Wow, so much to see! The cafe in Pie Town was unique, too bad the food wasn’t very good though! Love those old buildings, so many stories to tell.

Wow. I did a search for "what's it like to live in Pie Town" and found your video. I'm so glad I did ! I keep toying with the idea of buy some acreage up in the Datil, Pie Town, Quemado and Ramah areas because land is so cheap and it looks so pretty, but after watching this, no thank you ! Magdalena at least is closer to Socorro so shopping isn't an extreme trip, but they don't have the trees they have at those higher elevations.
Where's home? You said it was a few hours from Socorro so I'm going to guess Las Cruces. I am in Elephant Butte. I'm a transplant and somehow ended up here with my RV, living from state park to state park for a year. Then I settled into an RV park in the Butte over 5 years ago and never left. The place grows on you. I have a beautiful view of the lake.
I so appreciate you doing all that driving for me. Saved me a trip ! What a bummer about Pie Town. You must have been so disgusted leaving there. 🤣
You know what? I think I'll just hang out here a while longer. Thanks again.

Shocking review of Pie Town! You would at least think that you could get a slice of pie (and I was hungry with anticipation). Thank you.

Absolutely stunning. Visiting NM is definitely on my bucket list. There's something about the desert... maybe the lack of people? This was a funny one by the way, the biscuits and gravy and the cow got me laughing.

Yes, the desert can be quite peaceful. Glad you enjoyed 😉

Alexandra, I seem to feel the same way about the desert and the (lack of) people...(as I may have already commented for this channel) I'm attracted to the desert, the quietude, the blue skies, the open vistas...just give me a comfortable chair and place me in the open there - I could relax there for hours (maybe more!)...
I appreciate his tour through small towns...I have been considering moving to Las Cruces - but this video is serving to increase my hankering for the extra quietness of a small town...for me, I would prefer a general supermarket, a Whole Foods, and a maybe a Walmart...perhaps I could find a more desolate town that has a nearby town with those preferences...
      Blessings...

@@davidseres3030 I was considering Albuquerque but my family is all in NY. I regret not at least visiting when I had some time to. A small town is starting to sound a lot better though.

@@alexandriaburnett2801 Alexandria, firstly, sorry for misspelling your name on my previous comment to you... otherwise, I had considered Albuquerque, too...and then I could sing, "Point Me In The Direction of Albuquerque" by The Partridge Family🙂...I'm not against "city life/development" (I've lived in the Philly area all my life), but I prefer a more "sparse" appearance - including dirt roads if possible...are you and your family from NYC?...

@davidseres3030 we're in central NY, right outside of Syracuse. I actually lived in Philadelphia for a year. It happened to be the year they won the Superbowl and I'm an eagles fan. It was fun lol but I grew up in a really isolated rural area, so I'm accustomed to both as well. I'm older and boring now though, so cities have lost a little appeal.

Wow! Cool trip. Loved the mountains rock terrain and old towns, too. Next time, i hope you find some better coffee shops. Maybe the outside decor is a clue to the food. I don't know. I wonder why some realtors don't renovate some buildings to bring visitors?

Mal Pie pronunciation. Meaning bad country due to the lava flows. To me it is beautiful country. My family has a 200 year history in New Mexico. Pat Garrett is a cousin as is Oliver Lee and Tom Catron and most of the Anglo Regulators. Also related to some of the Mexican-American families. Ventanya pronunciation. Meaning window. Window Arch in English.

It seems you are a small town basher. I can't wait to move from the big nasty city of Houston to my 28 acres in Datil, New Mexico where the people or genuine and still show hospitality.

Well, you were a little harsh on Pietown. Those people are just trying to make a living the best they can. Maybe you caught them on a bad day, or maybe some people love their biscuits and gravy. I haven't had the pleasure to eat in Pietown yet, but my mother in law who lives in Phoenix drives there just for the pie, and Quemado has some of the most caring people, especially at the Quemado school district. I have only spoken with them on the phone but can't wait to meet them in person. My granddaughter, who has dealt with bullying in the school she attends in Texas, has already started online school there until we can get moved to our place in Datil. We live in a very prominent neighborhood on the outskirts of Houston, but I would take the small-town living any day over what I have now. I apologize if I sounded harsh, I just think you could have been a little less critical. I have met so many good people in these small towns, and with everything going on in the large cities and suburban areas, these people and places are like a breath of fresh air, or a peace of fresh apple pie.

Never said anything negative about the people. It's my fault for going at the wrong time. But being ignored at the only other restaurant and maybe it was just a bad batch of biscuits and gravy at the other. It's funny that if you had watched one of my many other small town videos, you might have said, " Wow, that was a fun, quant little town with a big heart. Thanks for covering it. "Now, I invite you to take a look at one of over 700 videos on my Channel that showcases all the wonderful sites throughout Albuquerque and New Mexico (other than my very seldom crime reports) Other than that, never been called a " Basher".
