@@iAmTheSquidThing I am confused. I clearly remember Boris telling us that we must remain in our primary residence and not travel to second homes. The guidance remains that if we or any members of our household show symptoms of covid 19 we must isolate in our own homes. The argument about taking care of others could apply to millions of people, in which case there is no point in having a lockdown.
Kt Anper forgive me, but wasn't it _always_ the case that we exercise our own judgment in this life? People are governed by *consent* in a true democracy - not by heavily veiled autocracy. As it is, govern-ment are corporate in this day and age - not there for the people. Your ONLY decision, is to get to decide who's boot you'll be under - if you ultimately choose to be. The lockdown is probably one of THE BIGGEST cons (as well as *_us_* currently being cons), in our lifetime.
he returned to work the same day she had symptoms which is explicitly against lockdown ...if he thought she was ill with something else then the rest makes no sense ...that in itself is the root of the problem ,durham and the castle was a secondary jaunt
"Darling, I think my vision is failing. Better bundle our 4 year old into the car, you get in the front, and I'll drive us to a local beauty spot! Oh, it's your birthday? What a coincidence!"
For him to say I drove to Barnard castle to test my eyesight is an absolute disgrace. Reality is that it was his wife's birthday and he wanted to take her there before coming back home to London. If he had apologised and said he shouldnt have gone there, I'd have given him the benefit of doubt. However this is pathetic. Does he really think the British public are that stupid?!?
He is looking for sympathy. How dare he. I have two sons and a granddaughter that I haven't seen since the lockdown. Both my sons have had birthdays this month. I have not seen either of them for either of their birthdays. How do you think that you are different from anyone else. We have all suffered and are suffering during this horrible time. Resign!
And what would you do if your children were very ill or hospitalised with covid? I imagine you would make arrangements to get to.and care for your grandchildren, yes?
@@shelleyphilcox4743 I take it you are another person who thinks the same way as he does. Everyone was told not to leave their homes for any reason. People all over this country have been doing their best to follow the rules! And yet the one's laying down the rules, are the ones breaking them. And for your information, my youngest son had all the symptoms of coronavirus , and yes, I was worried bloody sick! If you are someone that agrees with what he has done, then I can only guess that you are someone else that has been breaking the rules!
@Carol Read His own fault for making the rules and then breaking them. While the rest of the country are expected to follow them to the letter. If not we would be fined for it! How is he different from the rest of the country? Anyone else would be condemned for doing what he has done. But because he is a close friend of Boris , he is being treated differently! The pair of them are a disgrace to the country!
@@rmstitanic8163 You see to me that is the problem at the moment. You are making assumptions and accusations about my behaviour, simply because I have expressed a little understanding towards people faced with difficult dilemmas. If your grandchild needed care because your children were really seriously ill or hospitalised I would feel empathy for your family. I would respect that you had done your best to comply and had made arrangements as best as possible. I personally have stuck to all guidance. I havent been outside for days at a time. I wear a mask in the supermarket out of courtesy to others. I'm super conscious of the 2m social distancing. I've walked to the local expensive supermarket and avoided public transport to get to the cheap big supermarket. I've had one food delivery to get some things I couldn't get locally at the time, like loo roll and soap, as I felt guilty using any delivery slot that more vulnerable people or people in isolation with symptoms or people with big families might need. This means going out more frequently to shop myself because there is a limit to how much I can carry and haul up the stairs in my top floor flat (with no private garden just a teeny shared garden). For clarity, people should do the best they can to follow the guidance as strictly as possible, which includes making the best arrangements possible for the vulnerable people you are responsible for.
@@shelleyphilcox4743 I am not making assumptions. I am pleased to hear that you are someone that has stuck to the rules. Sorry if I came across as attacking. It's just that, as you have said, sticking to the government ruling is the only way that this virus can be beaten. The person that has totally ignored the rules set down for everyone to comply with, is the same person made the rules. He is fine. His wife and family are fine. He had a worry and a scare. Many of us have. But we have all tried to keep to the rules. Families have lost loved ones and not been able to see them. What gives Cummings the right to be different from everyone else in the country. You can look at it anyway you want to. But there is only one truth. One rule for himself, and another for the people of this country.
"I wasn't tested" is his excuse?! WTF does that say about Britain's ability to handle this crisis? That is seriously the worst excuse by a government agent ever.

Dominic Cummings... Interview was an embarrasment to watch. He was full of arrogance not apologising for his actions. Driving a vehicle whilst unwell endangered the general public at large. He should be removed from office immediately.
You have to take into consideration the situation he was in, judging by his wife's conditions it generally sounded serious. Stress is an important factor in this, he is human and yes driving on the road with bad eyesight was a mistake but the context of the situation makes it understandable.
@@tommyboy1504 Interesting anyalisation of a situation which should never have occurred. There is absolutely no excuse for his actions. Why do you have such a dislike to the rich people in society? Like it or not Dominic has worked extremely hard to get to where he is and he is being rewarded by being in such a valuable position. Being rich isin't evil, its just a product of working hard in life.
@@tommyboy1504 way to go mate, you show everyone how to miss the point like a champ whilst displaying an extraordinary capacity for naivety in regards to how people get rich. If this guy is so important to Boris, why didn’t he ask for a nurse or someone to look after his kid. I’m sure he would have got some help if he asked. Let’s face it he just wanted to go.
Ciaran I think a lot of it is just down to the *expectation* , that human resources will just fall easily to hand for some people. It doesn't - particularly during a socially challenging period. Whilst I appreciate there being a _chance_ that his wife was very unwell during this time, who would be the best person to look after his son? If you've got the commitment of a young toddler, I'd say you MUST put them first - he'd be irresponsible as a human being if he didn't in my eyes. Not only that, but how could he work effectively, if he didn't know what was happening with his son - AND his wife was potentially gravely ill? It may have been a very tactful decision in the long run. With everything that's going on across the world right now, even the Prime minister's chief of staff, may not have the luxury of doing things the way he may normally have the capacity to do.
Elizabeth Brown how do you know he didn’t? In fact during the briefing he gave he said he dialled 999 to seek advice and they took his child to the hospital? Or did you just chose not to listen to that part and interpret things the way you want to not what the facts say.
I still find it strange that a man employed in the heart of government with a wife who has family in London could not find any support there and was forced to drive to the north of England. The difficulty is that now we have been told that we can use our own judgement to interpret the rules it will make it difficult to enforce any kind of lockdown. We have been told that if the R number goes up the strict lockdown measures will need to be reintroduced again . This will now be difficult because we now know that we can travel to other parts of the country and visit other family members if we need to . In recent days I have seen comments posted on U tube making fun of the elderly gentleman in Castle Barnard . Now seems that he was correct after all.
I felt like I would soon be incapacitated to the point of not being able to look after a 4 year old so I immediately got in my car and set off on a 250 MILE epic car journey the length of the country with said 4 year old... what could go wrong??
Why doesn’t he make his statement from his own crib. He’s not speaking for the government from no10 backyard. Its rather distasteful to allow an aide de camp or government advisor to make an “unofficial “ statement of this nature. This is just psychological warfare with hearts and flowers and fairly bad acting.
Perhaps his own home is not large enough to.accommodate all the press safely. They couldn't manage ot in the street in front of his house, so not much chance of them managing themselves appropriately in a normal size garden.
His house can’t house 15 cameras and reporters can it? He can’t jus have it in the street can he I mean there’s already 20 clowns in the street not socially distancing may I add harassing Dominic everyday. So clearly doing it at Downing Street was the only logical place. It’s funny isn’t it all these nasty questions from the media come from guess what? A woman.

John T discretion only applies when it comes to the topics listed in the government guidance, such as childcare where it otherwise isn’t reasonably possible
The lockdown rules have always been quite permissive. We were all allowed to leave the house to help care for our families. And I thought that was made clear.
So you only went out once a day and abided by all the rules right? Do behave. Also look up on google a labour mp who went over 150 miles at the end of march to see his dad for his birthday but yet there’s no word of this from the media? You know why? Because he’s labour and doesn’t fit there anti brexit agenda

He further contradicts himself, saying once symptoms had subsided he wanted to return to Downing street to do the job he was meant to do, but they were obviously not so terribly sick that they could make a several trips out, in and around the area - coincidentally on his wife's birthday- justifying one of their outings as an "eye test".. finally, who on earth packs up their potentially sick family into a car so that their potentially sick child could then infect whomever was going to be taking care of them?? Poor job by the journalists. I wanted to know why they all got out by the river in Barnard Castle when only he felt sick, why they all got out at the bluebell woods between Barnard Castle and Durham when it only required one adult to supervise a child needing a toilet, why did all of them need to go on a half hour trip to see if his eyesight was ok (not that I believe that exuse)

The media swarm are disgusting. No one calls them out for their lack of social distancing. The media in the UK are the biggest virus in this country. Why don’t you report on the child grooming gangs that are being uncovered???
Just imagine if every family in the country who had similar and worse circumstances than he did had done the same and made long journeys at that crucial time in the lockdown. It would have been devastating to the effort of controlling the Covid-19 outbreak.

Yes and why did they all have to get out of the car at Barnard Castle when only he felt sick? The child needing a toilet on the way back to Durham was conveniently by a pretty bluebell wood too. They all got out of the car then too
So at 09:40 / 09:55 Mr Cummings admits to driving a motor vehicle whilst incapacitated - He stated his eye sight was impaired and he drove on the public road for over half an hour!
What he is actually saying here, when it is repeatedly pointed out to him that millions of people have expierienced exactly the same situation as him but still chose to follow lockdown guidelines is "I'm not everybody else, I'm special"

Having lied, his whole testimonial must be questioned. He must go and the prime minister must make a damage-limiting statement!
Because it makes it look like they were by the river, talked to an elderly gentleman and then their child played with another child, who jumped into the woods, and Dominic briefly joined them, violating social distancing rules - rules that, in the unedited press conference, he didn't break. ua-cam.com/video/8PBZ8UowYnU/v-deo.html If this is meant to be misleading, it's a terrible effort - a "hack-job".
However, I thought I should make it clear that, though the video is edited in a suspicious manner, this doesn't mean he wasn't lying; only he knows whether he's telling the truth or not.
The man broke the rules, he should be sacked. He has admitted traveling. This was unnecessary. He and his wife had Covid 19 and should have stayed at their own home and self isolated until well again. There is no excuse for what he has done. It is illegal and irresponsible.

So when he went home and his wife was showing symptoms of covid 19 he later went back to work?? I thought that the advice was if someone in your home has symptoms you have to self isolate for 14 days? one rule for the public and one rule for the government?
@@tommyboy1504 So are we to assume that the medical team are using a different set of rules to the rest of us? All Dr's advice is if someone in your home has symptoms of the virus you MUST self isolate for 14 days

Enough time wasted on this individual. He must resign or be dismissed. Let the media and government concentrate on this terrible pandemic which is more important right now.
Yes, because we need "the media" now more than ever. Unfortunately "the media" is forming most of the problem, and has done on many issues for decades. Including the BBC. E.g. When school shootings happen, the media have finally learned from being told endlessly not to endlessly report/sensationalise it. The media were for many years part of the problem with school shootings, suicide epidemics too. They still can't resist standing on the graves of the dead from time to time too to sensationalise about it to us. Same with "Cummings is a hypocrite - he doesn't respect lockdown rules, why should we?". The media have been the ones endangering people's life's in the lockdown from this type of sensationalising. Including pushing speculation/lies about Cummings as "fact". Also, just look at their swarms of "socially distancing" reporters, all packed like sardines as ever, while they obsess over a story about a (controversial) man looking after his child. Lockdown breaking sensetionalism they have been endlessly pushing over the last few days. Same with all the mass panic/hysteria/catasrophising they have caused for what is a virus that looks every day more and more like the flu, and possibly even safer than the flu. Everyday flu, not the Spanish flu, but with no immunity in the population. Enabling a overreaction that looks now very likely to be worse for all human life, in every way, than the disease. The media are people's worst enemies now more than ever. We need more people like Cummings that stand up to them. The media are far too powerful. They have taken over the role that religion once had in controlling a massive number of people's dogmatic opinions, with often nothing more than sensationalism, convenient simplifications, and even outright mistruths in the service of themselves of their groups interests.. They have far too much power with little accountability, other than new media which undercuts their gatekeeping of what people should think, for better or worse, but still crucially better on many issues. The government should decide what to do, guided by actual non-partisan science. But any decision is for for politicians to decide, they are elected, the media are not. We need people like Cummings to hold the media to account - people in politics who are accountable to the public. If Johnson goes, he goes, if Johnson judges him to be of interest to the government and the public, so be it. We will get a say. The media are the biggest load of charlatans/virtue signalling puritans/corrupt sensationalisers they've ever been, treacherous to the public and the nation.
Goes to show that he has no friends in London. If he had followed the rules, friends would have delivered food and supplies. If needed, medical staff & social workers wearing PPE would have gone into the house and give the care to all of them. He was quite happy to put his family “in danger”. Tells me a lot about this man.
Boris had a choice:support his Vizier and risk losing the support of his party, or support his party and sack cummings. He made the wrong decision. He hoped by not sacking cummings to keep the man who actually thinks for him. Now he's going to lose his party. What use is his Vizier when his "king" has lost his power? None. What use is johnson without his Vizier? None. Well done boris. Goodbye, good riddance ..... and don't forget to take that trash with you on your way out.

Haha, he may have got lost and stopped on the way but I after using my own common sense realise he is being put forward by the government to calm down an angry public over this bs
Cummings and Goings went to Barnard Castle without good reason (a ridiculous excuse), when the instruction was to stay home. Nice little jaunt, not necessary. He didn't have to return the next day to London if not feeling well enough- and why rush back if exposed to danger and threats there, a reason he gave for leaving? He must resign and so must Boris who of course pointedly avoided answering the question about Barnard Castle, as on that alone Cummings has been out of order and Boris knows it. As for testing; pitiful government failure over this whole crisis- so too PPE, herd immunity, track and trace and the awful number of deaths, 2nd worst in the world.

Since when does “STAY AT HOME” turn into “Drive for 30 mins for an outing to woods and a 15 min sit by the river, near Barnard Castle (on your wife’s birthday)”?
When do we humans become prisoners of society because of the gov and their alleged virus? How many people in parliament worldwide died from the virus? And why is only the population that dies from the virus? If I were him I would have done the same thing.
That was AFTER he recovered from the virus, and he was preparing to do exactly that "Test drive for home" so that he could stay at home, but of course he couldn't stay at home as his place of work was open as usual right ? same as Supermarket staff etc etc, as for the walk in the woods, well I don't know what you are on, but he clearly said that the walk in the wood was a wood on his father's land ! no driving required ! what else did you imagine he said ? 😄😄😄😄😄😄

This is extraordinary. I've backed the Tories for years now, but can't vote 'cause I'm not a citizen. I have to admit, I'd never heard Cummings speak, and paid little attention to him, imagining him to be a powerful political operator behind the scenes, a kind of Tory 'eminence grise', who had Boris' ear. But screw me 6 times over! Is this the guy Boris takes advice from? I dunno, maybe I'm just crazy? My concern now, is not so much that he may have flouted his own guidelines, but whether he's minimally competent, and whether he should be anywhere near the levers of power. I'm afraid this whole debacle reflects poorly on the Prime Minister. Cummings, during this press conference (or whatever it was), appeared to be weak, unsteady, inarticulate, and distracted. To me, he seemed to be having a nervous breakdown on camera. Am I the only person to feel this way?
Sometimes in life, the stress of a serious problem can affect one's ability to convey it in the way that others may presume to be "typical". This can take years in many cases, and there can also be many external factors at play, such as the culture around where he worked, what he was busy spending his day doing, the people around him, and how they can affect a person's mental clarity. For all we _really_ know, nothing here may be completely straightforward (and his testimony at least, does seem to suggest that).
Another train wreck, watching someone trying to explain their actions. Why do these people think if they go on TV and justify what they did then it will be ok.? Pleased they do though.!! Love watching them.
Well I'll concede that I don't know what he was [really] thinking. He is a human being after all, and sometimes human things can happen (yes - even to government officials). Personally, I think this is really about stopping Brexit. What I'd really like feedback on, are your thoughts about the specifically sequenced wording of the "news" correspondents... Open answers would be most elaborative.
Those interviewers were pathetic. Surely if you had dodgy eyesight, you wouldn't even think about getting in a car, let alone drive it for 4 hours and 40 minutes. I hope the papers savage him in the morning.
I know right? Some guy in the government who made his career on standing up against out of touch elites elitistly writes a bunch of rules for everyone else to follow and then contemptuously ignores them himself. Who even cares? Accountability, integrity and consistency are such boringly outmoded notions.

He drove his Covid-infected family to live in Durham so a nearby 17yo niece can provide childcare (if they cannot).... and that niece lives with two other people. Sure.... makes perfect sense. No risk of spreading the virus. Definitely no professionals that can provide safe childcare in London.
Why does he keep stuttering. ..because he is guilty of his actions...get him out ..I have not been able to see my daughter for 8 weeks but I followed the rules ...people are dying have some respect for them .silly man
Driving to Barnard Castle to test your eye sight. Why not just test it on the route home! Why make a big diversion. He could drive one or two junctions down the A1 and then turn round if he thinks he's not up to it. And testing eye sight whilst driving is downright dangerous. Having had this thing the eye sight issues in my case were caused by dizziness when focusing on anything, close up worse than far away but nothing in sharp focus. My 8 day fever had gone, thought I was almost well and then the next day ended up too dizzy to even use a mobile for more than a minute at once and needed one day of 14 hours in bed. If that's what he felt like, driving in that state would be really risky.
I think lockdown is too extreme. If millions of people can figure out how to get to the grocery store safely, then they can figure out how to do other things safely too. We used to have a thing called freedom. Life requires risks. The question should be... why shouldn't everyone be able to go for a drive if they do it safely & adhere to social distancing? We should have the freedom to choose.
As my sister pointed out, the way he's traded in his usual thug get-up of baggy t-shirt and cheap tracksuit bottoms for a clean shirt is incredibly redolent of a criminal making a court appearance.
If I am planning to leave my job for 14 days because I have Covid-19 symptoms then I would clear it with my bosses first. That is not something that you do on the spur of the moment and start a 5 hour drive to another address. This guy's explanation does not add up. It is understandable that he wanted his family to help him out but, it was against the lock-down rules. He needs to confess and apologize.

Yeah but every family wasn't in his position. He had a safe haven where he could isolate and where he is now, he has worked hard to get to.

Why didn’t he leave his child with nieces on the “test drive” to barnard castle ?
Yes and why did they all have to get out of the car at Barnard Castle when only he felt sick? The child needing a toilet on the way back to Durham was conveniently by a pretty bluebell wood too. They all got out of the car then too

Can someone please answer one simple question regarding Mr Cummings' 'test drive' to Barnard Castle? Apart from the fact that he had obviously put his wife and children at risk by doing this, could his wife had not driven the family back to London? So, does his wife have a driving license?
What an absolute nonsense. It's so clear he's been spending the last 3 days thinking of a loophole. The message was clear to me...stay home, protect the nhs unless you must travel for (essential) work, go shopping for food, or go to hospital (alone).
incorrect, if travel is essential for work not (essential) work!
This was his story from the day it broke. Stop projecting motivation.
@@bengale9977 agreed, and his "story" stinks whatever way you look at it. I believe in the great British tradition of playing fair & by the rules...he's a law unto himself. This is further evidence you where unfit to drive let alone drive four hours back to London!
Clearly using his son as a scapegoat. What a load of bullshit. What happened to lead by example?
Cummings must go! His explanations are garbage. If he had any concerns about his son’s health, staying at home near a hospital would have been the responsible choice, especially given his position and contacts. His comment about his trip to Barnard Castle is clearly false. Why would you ‘test your eyesight’ and ability to drive while at the same time put your own child and wife in obvious danger. Having lied, his whole testimonial must be questioned. He must go and the prime minister must make a damage-limiting statement!
Why has a bit been cut out when he was talking about his practice car trip
It's at 9:46 and the awkward bit where he's interrogated on it is at 39:28
Because it makes it look like they were by the river, talked to an elderly gentleman and then their child played with another child, who jumped into the woods, and Dominic briefly joined them, violating social distancing rules - rules that, in the unedited press conference, he didn't break.

@@russelldunning1584 good call. It's at 10:33
However, I thought I should make it clear that, though the video is edited in a suspicious manner, this doesn't mean he wasn't lying; only he knows whether he's telling the truth or not.
The man broke the rules, he should be sacked. He has admitted traveling. This was unnecessary. He and his wife had Covid 19 and should have stayed at their own home and self isolated until well again. There is no excuse for what he has done. It is illegal and irresponsible.
Why take the child in the car if he was feeling “ weird” ?
Jenni Stevenson Because he's a lying, arrogant, sneery little man who just does whatever he wants, and thinks only of himself.
That child sadly has him as a mentor .

Why would a chief adviser not inform his advised why when n how he had to leave in case he was needed.
So when he went home and his wife was showing symptoms of covid 19 he later went back to work?? I thought that the advice was if someone in your home has symptoms you have to self isolate for 14 days? one rule for the public and one rule for the government?
He consulted the medical team at downing street before setting off. Whether that makes it right or wrong idk.
@@tommyboy1504 So are we to assume that the medical team are using a different set of rules to the rest of us? All Dr's advice is if someone in your home has symptoms of the virus you MUST self isolate for 14 days
If you've had it don't need to isolate for 14 days if someone gets it at the same time. Both must isolate 7 days since they have symptoms and at least 48 hours fever free. If you haven't had it and someone else does then you need to isolate for 14 days. So that's ok. But what isn't is going elsewhere, getting out of car twice near Barnard castle including sitting by the river and letting his child go to toilet and then play a bit after in the woods. Leaving London biggest risk though.
he's a gov advisor for the love of everything good! If he returns to work its cos he is considered essential and he has permission to do so. By your logic we'd have no medical staff working cos the moment you come into contact with someone with the virus you self-isolate.

Enough time wasted on this individual. He must resign or be dismissed. Let the media and government concentrate on this terrible pandemic which is more important right now.
NO. HE DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE SACKED. KNOB

If needed, medical staff & social workers wearing PPE would have gone into the house and give the care to all of them. He was quite happy to put his family “in danger”. Tells me a lot about this man.
No friends in London? His heads on right then…
Boris had a choice:support his Vizier and risk losing the support of his party, or support his party and sack cummings.

Squirming and stammering once the questions start. This is excruciating.
