Dutchified sounds like he might be Afrikaans? 😊 I am excited to head to Amsterdam, I think my Afrikaans will serve me well there. The food looks amazing! My Dutch gram made her own Haring, and I looks forward to that and the salty licourice.
Oh your making my mouth water! I lived 2 years in Amsterdam things have moved on a bit (1980's) cant wait to return 😋. This was a good catchup.. Love kroketten ❤️
I'm surprised Mark that you didn't try the famous Dutch fast food, Kapsalon. Kapsalon is a Dutch fast food consisting of fries, topped with döner or shawarma meat, grilled with a layer of Gouda cheese until melted and then covered with a layer of dressed salad greens. The dish is usually served in a disposable metal tray as this food is a fast food. The dish is often served with garlic sauce and sambal, a hot sauce from the former colony of Indonesia. Kapsalon has a high energy content, with a large serving containing approximately 1,800 kilocalories. It certainly is not for those who want to lose weight !! The term kapsalon means "hairdressing salon" in Dutch, alluding to one of the inventors of the dish. The dish was conceived in 2003 by Nathaniël Gomes, a Cape Verdian hairdresser in Rotterdam who in collaboration with the neighboring shawarma store "El Aviva" combined all his favorite ingredients into one dish. The dish has since spread around the Netherlands into Belgium, among other countries.
All of this reminded me of when I lived in the Netherlands growing up. It makes me homesick, even though it has been 29 years since NL was "home." Thanks for this!
If you want something else than the classic snacks, you can do the 'stamppot'. It's a cabbage or carrots mashed up with potatoes, put together and a sausage on it (mostly smoked sausage, but I prefer a fresh one). Totally mess, totally tasty :).
Nice vid, very entertaining. I love haring and poffertjes! I wanted to say to use mustard (especially Zaanse mustard) with your kroket but you did it with bitterballen. And try 'speciaal saus' with your fries
Very timely video, Mark, haha. I'll be in Amsterdam in a couple weeks so thanks for putting up a street food video. I will now make sure I'm careful with the internal temperature of fried foods there, haha. Indonesian food...I had no idea that was popular in Amsterdam! Did you have beef rendang? That's my favorite.
Well, Indonesia was a Dutch colony and when it got independence a lot of Indonesians moved to the Netherlands. So yeah, we have a lot of Indonesian food (you can buy a microwavable "bapao" or nasi goreng in any grocery store). If you want to eat beef rendang you can, off course, go to an Indonesian restaurant or a "toko" (Indonesian shop).
Where can i get that breadroll with pork and satay sauce? I’m in Amsterdam on Monday and i want to try it Would be helpful if someone could tell me where to get it
Totally missed out on osseworst mate. Dutch food and Amsterdam food are different, like the herring, in Amsterdam we keep our hands clean. But this was straight up "I'm an american in Amsterdam doing tourist-stuff video." Which is fine ofcourse. Love your vids btw. (edit)
Useful you have an Afrikaans speaker with you. I think the accent is familiar. The base of Kroketten en bitterballen is a roux from which you add meat and spices to make a thick ragout. Subsequently flour and crumbs prior to deep-fry.
Nah.. I should try other things. The best things that are Dutch are frikadel, we eat that most of the time by our fries. Pannenkoeken or poffertjes is something you should try. They are almost the same so make your choice ;) Beside that, a kapsalon is also really funny to try. Make sure that you are really hungry if you try that one out haha.
What about my all-time favourite snacks??? Get a "Broodje Rookworst" from the HEMA (a smoked sausage in a bread roll)! Most Dutch people may have sauces on it but it is best plain!!!
@@woltersworld You are welcome! I could help you out with a list of possible destinations on your next trip to The Netherlands if you would be interested???
Mate, what is the name of the first place you are at eating the sandwiches? Im going to amsterdam soon and want to try that food, your videos are great by the way, makes me want to travel more lol, peace ☮️
That's true. Due to former colonialism, Indonesian food is widespread in the Netherlands. Most Chinese restaurants also serve Indonesian dishes and in the toko you can buy a whole array of Indonesian produce.
yep my recipe is peanut butter prior, mix ginger, chilies, garlic, dades , spring onion with toasted terasi in a blender with a shot of soy sauce. Reduce cook it with the peanut butter in a cup of chicken stock. Found that my creation taste very much like the original I had in java.
Hello Mark! Great vid!...Question....did you try the "Oliebollen' yet? They are available in wintertime in the Netherlands and realy tasty! See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliebol Greetings from the Netherlands!
Just a note - these foods are of course available across The Netherlands, not Amsterdam centric... And watch out for seagulls in the coastal cities! They will swoop down and grab that food right out of your hand on the way to your mouth!
You should tried stroopwaffel. The fresh authethic made ones are fucking great. I love how foreigners eat bitterballen in one go and then imidatly regret that.
tbf since this a video about amsterdam you should ad the correct version of fries. in the north its called Patat, Friet is smth from the southern netherlands and belgium. Same thing but you know the little things.
Its bitter balls ^^ bitterballen. Try frikandel speciaal next time. The herring is mostly served sour pickles but it takes away the tast according to experts.
Welll .. esp. try anything with Netherlandish Mayonaise. Its on a total different level than regular mayonaise (so the Japanese gonna just LOVE it) ;) Thats what you gonna learn when living nearby (ie. German - NL border) ;) cu, w0lf.
Dear Mark, you've missed the mark on this one :-) The most favorite streetfood for my Americans friends has always been frikandellen :-) Pickled herring is a definite no,no ... who in his right mind would want to eat raw, salted fish? I've been born and bred in Amsterdam and I won't touch the stuff with a 10 inch pole 🙂 For your next video on Amsterdam, ask someone who's really from here 🙂
The traditional food not really. The meat in bread thing was just the sauce and that is an option at the fries places. In Indonesian cuisine which is popular in Amsterdam there is a lot of peanuts. But in Dutch cuisine they dont really use peanuts.
That coin op restaurant is not a new concept. In New York, as late as the 1980s, There was a chain of restaurants called the Automat. Exact same concept. Loved their home made baked beans and baked mac and cheese.
Yeah, the automat originates in Berlin end of the 19th century. Thing is, only in the Netherlands it is still a pretty much normal thing to see. Also if you would have a mac and cheese thing overhere, it would have been battered and deepfried and called the Mac&Cheese hap.
+VampireBlack95 On Google Maps search "Foodhallen" and you'll see the market in Kinkerbuurt. The vending machine place is called FEBO which is just below Foodhallen on the map. Jan Schilder is the herring/haring shop which is very close to Foodhallen just across the canal to the east.
Huh ik ken dat helemaal niet joh😂 I dont know about the first dish but i dont know it maybe heard of it but its not really populair igues, i gonna try it maybe but Amsterdam is realy difrent than the rest of Nederland.
Noooooooooooooooo Pinda saus does NOT belong on a broodje warm vlees. Maybe in the Amsterdam tourist area, but if you will order it like that in the rest of the Netherlands people will stare at u if u are a alien. Do not do try to order it like that that in the rest of the Netherlands. Together with broodje warm vlees belongs a honey mustard sause. But you are right, the sauce on kibbeling is based on mayonnaise. It's called Remoulade Sauce. And some things about Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands. They are run bij Chinese people, but halve or more of their menu will be Indonesian food. That's because of the Indonesian colony the Dutch people where used to eating Indonesian food, and a lot of the Chinese vegetables, you just couldn't buy them in the Netherlands. So the Chinese restaurants changed their menu the Dutch way. 🤣🤣🤣.
Probably because it's one of the few snack places where you can go at that time. But if you visit a real good cafeteria / frituur youll never return to febo
If there are any Dutch speakers here please correct me if I'm wrong but... Words like kroketen and bitterballen end with "en" to make them plural. The "n" is silent. More like "kroket-uh".
