    Stretch Out is an Iconic Pentecostal Song which still has a Holy Ghost anointing 50 years later

    There was a purity to the anointing back then...the saints believed what they sang about...

    This is the original version. Later in 1967 they recorded it again on Shirley Caesar's "I'll Go" album. In 1968 they recorded again on their "Stretch Out" album. They recorded it again in 1989 on their "Reunion" album. There are at least 4 versions they did. I have all of the IRC albums.

    One must remember, during the 1960's, if you wanted to hear music like this, you had to go to a Pentecostal, holiness, apostolic or independent storefront church. I grew up in NYC in the 60's and 70's, and remember hearing Institutional, Washington Temple, COOLJC of the Apostolic Faith from the Bronx, and many others on WWRL AM 1600! All the education a teenaged musician in the AMEZC needed to play more than just hymns, thank y'all ever so much.

      Arthur Williams Someone forgot to tell my church choir the rules, at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights, we got down like that every Sunday. What matters is that the Lord is present.

      Arthur Williams A lot of people don't like to admit it but this type of music started with the Pentecostal or as it was known back then, the Sanctified Church.
      Other denominations, including Baptist used to make fun of our worship and praise calling us "holy rollers" and "demons".
      Sure some denominations picked up the COGIC sound but if you wanted to get your praise and shout on everyone knew to go to the Sactified/Holiness church.
      This is not putting down other denominations it's just fact. I grew up Missionary Baptist and my mom was the choir director at the church I grew up I and she explained this to me as a kid. My mom however, was heavily influenced musically by COGIC because of family that was Pentecostal. But this was and is the COGIC/HOLINESS/APOSTOLIC sound.

      Arthur Williams My Family has a strong Pentecostal background in NYC. My great grandmother was a member of Bishop FD Washington’s church (Washington Temple COGIC), my grandmother was a member of Pentecostal House of Prayer COGIC, and my mother was a member of Universal Temple Church it God until moving to California. I thank God for my Holiness upbringing.

    These types of songs originated in the holiness church and then moved to the Baptist church youth or young adult choir. The senior choirs didn't sing this type of music in the Baptist church back then. They did songs from groups like the Clara Ward singers, etc.

    Truth! Age 17, and we sang this in my first choir experience. Our lead vocalist, Reba, has gone on home now, but she did this to God's glory. That was 50 years ago.

    My 20 year old granddaughter was with me today, 1-2-21 and said, " I know I have an old Spirit, Nana"! She went on to say as I was listening to gospel music, " There is nothing like those good old Gospel Songs that has meaning that speaks to your soul!! She jumped up and just said, YES! YES! YES!
    I JUST LOOKED AND SAID, WOW! MY GRANDAUGHTER HASN'T REALLY SMILED SINCE HER ONLY BROTHER WAS KILLED!!!
    I JUST WANT TO SHARE THAT WHEN YOU STRETCH OUT BELIEVING GOD'S WORD, HE (GOD ), WILL SHOW THAT HE'S STILL GOD❣❣🎵🎶🎼🎵👏👏

    I Always remember The Institutional COGIC For those Infamous Tambourines, every song that I have ever heard, there was a tambourine being played. lol, and I'm always liking how those tambourine players lasted to the end of every song. lol, i've learned the tambourine very well by playing to their songs. hahaha.

    • @CelestialChoir
      @CelestialChoir 9 років тому +3

      You got the TRUE revelation!! :-) I grew up playing the tambourine in a COGIC church, and that's a skill you can use all your life, to the glory of God! The tambourine is often missing from modern black gospel music, so the music sounds and feels "empty" without that crisp, light, percussion sound the tambourines add
      to the flavor and sound of the music. I prefer old-school gospel, but the modern
      stuff would sound soooooo much better with tambourines and much more JOYFUL and EXUBERANT in the praise!! :-)

    • @MrMiikey101
      @MrMiikey101 9 років тому +1

      Charity Dell Yes Ma'am Everywhere i go to church, you best believe i got my tambourine.

      Well, BANG THAT TAMBOURINE and PRAISE HIM, ANYHOW!! LOL...if you want to see and hear lots of tambourines with this song, check out the "Stretch Out--GHMBC" video on UA-cam. I think I counted NINE tambourines, plus the WASHBOARD!! SUPER-MEGA PRAISE and those tambourines really help to "bring the joy" in the music...more black gospel choirs should invest in TAMBOURINES and play them within the choir...BEAUTIFUL!

    This is so nostalgic. I remember we used to sing Institutional songs. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been singing all the old songs. These songs were under the anointing power of God. Institutional Church was the place to be at that time. I MISS SINGING FOR GOD! I’m not a perfectionist, but I believe in singing under the anointing of our Lord. I TRULY MISS SINGING FOR HIM!!!!!! I believe in the Lord, speaking in an unknown tongue-gift of the HOLY GHOST-Baptized in Jesus Name. You can call me a HOLY ROLLER-trying to live a HOLY LIFE before the Lord- SAVED IN MY YOUTH- NOW I AM OLD - BUT I CAN TESTIFY THAT IVE NEVER SEEN THE RIGHTEOUS FORSAKEN NOR HIS SEED BEGGING BREAD. Look where He’s brought me from.

    A staple at many churches, including the non COGIC ones. As a matter of fact, someone posted a message at my Facebook page indicating that it was a staple for them back in the 70's and I know they are not COGIC because we all came up in the same organization. It is a great song.

    This song (Strech Out) reminds me of my childhood days, sitting in my grandmother's (RIH) living room, in the rocking chair, rocking to the beat of the stereo with a record player, eight-track, and Am and FM radio. ♥

    I know this was a favorite by many down through the years but quite honesty this is the only song, that no matter who sung it does "nothing" for Me. It just never quite captured me. Now Institutional re-tecorded a song entitled "Anchor Bye and Bye". Now that song is a powerful one..
    Just my thoughts..
