  • In this video, I take a look at the new adidas Adizero Boston 11. The Boston was known to be a lightweight daily trainer up until the Boston 9 that you could also race a marathon in (hence the Boston name) but "grew" a lot in the 10 and moved to a dual layer Lightstrike Pro and regular Lightstrike midsole which is the same setup in the 11.

    I really liked the 10s. They didn’t deserve the poor reviews and I think it they weren’t part of the Boston line and marketed as a different shoe altogether people would have been fine with it. Definitely a good middle distance training option and a super tough shoe that would go the distance over the miles. I’ll add the Boston 11 to my adios 7 and pro 3 lineup for sure. 👍

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому

      Yeah that was a big factor as the 10 was so different to before that it might have made more sense to come up with a new shoe name but they probably ended up selling a fair number because of the Boston name. At least in the 11 with now being able to get my correct size I can now better see it as it should be and same with the Adios 7 and Adios Pro 3. Ideally though it could be a bit lighter.

    Despite the mixed to poor reviews I bought the Boston 10 and enjoy them. I like the firmer ride (which softens somewhat over time) and find them quite stable and able to pick up the pace when I want. Just for contrast, I don't really like the Nike Invincibles which I find a touch too soft.

      I had the excellent Boston 9, which actually were my daily trainers until they reached 500km.; then I wasn't interested at all in buying a completely different shoe.
      So I started using more often my Adizero Pro, and after 300km. they feel great every day more; Lightstrike softens after the first 100s, and are light, nimble and responsive.
      To me, a real jack of all trades !

    Hi Tim , I’m a new subscriber. Just finished a 15 miler in the Reebok Energy X . They felt great up to 12 and then I started to feel the feet and not in a good way . I’m thinking about the Puma Nitro Elite as my long run shoe , upto 23 miles . Any recommendations would be appreciated 👍

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому +2

      Many thanks for the sub! Unfortunately Reebok shoes stop at a UK 12 so not been able to try those. For me 15 miles is about the point where long runs can get tough in any shoe especially if I am not marathon training. Is that a possible factor? My last 2 marathon races were in the Vaporfly NEXT%. Other shoes have run at least 15 miles in training of late include the RC Elite 2, Endorphin Speed, Alphafly, Adios Pro 2 (haven't had the 3 long enough yet). I have those Puma Deviate Nitro elite but haven't used them enough to say. The new Endorphin Pro 3 could be an option too but again haven't had them long enough to do that length of mileage. A shoe like the Boston 11 would be one I would consider. I nearly got that far in the Boston 10 despite being too small for me. Guess another factor is how fast you are going. For long runs I often go and more forgiving surfaces like old railways and when they were still available I did lots of long runs in the Pegasus Turbo.

    love the boston 10s. have a old navicular stress fracture and these are the only shoes that 1 can run in that doesnt cause me pain. I don't see them as a easy day shoe, think they work best for me at crusing and tempo speed. the more I run fast in them the more responsive the Rods work and the longer my stride is. if ya slighty overpronate can see these working well. highly recommend the 10s

    Everything i could possibly explain about the boston you stated perfectly. Ill always prefer the 9s over the 10s but they are great for long runs if anything, go too slow in the 10s and its almost as if they fight you feel clunkier. I find myself doing all long runs progressively faster. One thing ill say, they barely made it to 400 miles. Probably should have retired them around 350. Ordered another pair. Good job.

      Ah thanks. I need to get back in my Boston 11 to see how they shape up over a longer time. In the past I tended to get about 300 miles in the older Bostons but also had a few pairs on the go at same time. That was when I only tended to wear one model for "daily" training with the Adios for faster stuff and races!

    Good to hear these are working for you. Personally hated the Boston 10 but it does have it's niche. Actually I know alot of people who really like that shoe. Not everyone likes this new generation of super soft and bouncy foams but at the same time want a midsole that feels like it protects you from the impact of the road. So this one gives you the cushion but has stability and without feeling like you' re bouncing all over the palce or sinking into the shoe.

    Great review, Tim! Very helpful. This shoe may work for me. I’m a runner who likes a firmer ride and a “soft enough” shoe. Too much squish and I feel I’m going nowhere. I’m wondering if over time all these super soft shoes for daily runs will lead some runners to stress fractures or tendon problems . No one “loves” a stability shoe. Yet some shoes may be “instability” shoes if runners aren’t well locked into them (my guess is many runners don’t get a lock down when they put their shoes on). Wondering if down the road we will see “overuse” injuries cropping up more frequently, but they will have been caused by uneven torquing on the ankles or feet or knees. But people will blame the runners for “running too much.”

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I was thinking about this recently and have been reaching for relatively firmer shoes like the Pegasus of late. I did a long run in the Boston 11 on Sunday and they are very stable indeed as the regular Lightstrike is relatively firm. Equally cushioning is fine and after almost 2 hours running had no issues other what might expect after such a run. When I last wore the ultra soft Invincible I felt a few knee twinges and generally I find them quite hard work and only really good if my legs are sore and need all that cushion.

      @@TimGrose I wore the Invincibles running on snow last winter a few times because the traction was good. Afterwards my ankles felt not great because altho I didn’t slip somehow the heaviness of the invincible plus the snow didn’t work well for me. This winter I’ll take the Peg 39 or the Peg Shield. I’m sure it will handle snow well enough. I’m liking the “turbo” next nature too so it must be the firm ride that’s been working for me. Glad I’m not imagining this!😊 There’s so much subjectivity in running shoes!

      On the 11 for me there is a decent gap vertically and horizontally between my big toe and the upper material so you may well be OK. (I also find it a quick shoe for the amount of input/effort) I get about 3 to 5 seconds per KM @127bpm over my Mizunos or Altra's. However, I can't use them 100% for my training as they can irritate the lateral side of my foot (must be the rods shaping the foot fall in a particular way) . So after a long run in them or a couple of shorter days, I will do a day or two in another shoe.

    I really like my Boston 10, they have over 750 km on the odometer.
    11? - it looks like they didn't break anything there :P

      Very similar yes. Just bit less padding to lose a bit of weight.

    I feel the same about ‘over cushioned’ shoes lately. After getting the Saucony Tempest I am starting to prefer a slightly firmer daily trainer/tempo. I’ve been using my RC Elite for long runs now they are nearly due for retirement and today they seemed a bit too mushy

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah soft is nice but not when feel are sinking and just basically takes more effort. RC Elite v2 I used for a HM training run few weeks ago. It wasn’t quite as soft as I remembered but think is the softest of the carbon racers. I had to abandon the Rebel v2 for being too soft so at least the plate in the RC Elite v2 reduces that ultra soft feeling somewhat. Think like most carbon racers wants you to go bit faster but not always what you want to do an LSD run as it were.

    Would it be good for a 2 mile full effort race??

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому

      Would not be my first choice (on the road would be a Vaporfly NEXT% or from adidas either the Adios Pro 2 or 3 or the Takumi Sen 8 or even the Adios 7 if wanted a cheaper shoe). That said the Boston 11 could certainly "go" and I did a couple of minutes hard in them as a test for this video.

    Good to hear your thoughts on these Tim. I considered them recently when looking at road shoes but went for the much cheaper Reebok floatride 4's in the end which have been great so far

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately Reebok don't make any of their running shoes bigger than a UK 12 so a brand that totally passes me by although I think I need have a pair of their racing flats many many years ago when my feet were clearly smaller! Tend of hear good things about the shoes. I think you can bring down to the Boston 11 on adidas UK website to £91 with a 35% discount from RunningHeroes.com I have used that to get several adidas shoes. adidas UK were not offering any UK 13.5 that I need until few days ago so could saved myself some money!

    Which adidias shoe is the lightest ?

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому

      Takumi Sen 8 of the current ones I have. It is about 235 g in a UK 12.5 that I have. To compare with the recent shoes I have got in a UK 13.5 probably say 250g if they did a UK 13.5. Adios 7 is about 275g in a UK 13.5, Adios Pro 3 285g in a UK 13.5 and the Boston 11 about 380g in a UK 13.5. So hence why I said the Boston 11 would not be ideal race shoe especially for a 2 mile.

    How are your ankles not broken? Watching the slow mo was painful, mate.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 роки тому +2

      Well been running a good 40 years now and have had my fair share of injuries during that time but thankfully my ankles have never been a significant problem area for me. It might appear I am pronating a little more than I really do as the close up shots involve a small "jump" over my GoPro and obviously I am not doing normally. I saw a video of Kipchoge in a track session the other day and his feet looked quite unstable too from a cursory glance.

    No Suede on the shoe. Synthetic textile materials on the upper only

    • @TimGrose

      Ah fair point. So a modern day material that looks like and feels like suede and I can't think of anybody other than adidas (at least of the main players) that uses such material in current shoes.
