- In this video, Sam takes an al fresco look at what's possibly the most versatile, best sounding portable practice amp ever made...the Boss Katana Air, check it out here: www.pmtonline.co.uk/boss-kata...

Here we get to see how far the range is on the Katana Air Wireless amplifier as Sam takes it down to the beach, and we also get an in depth look at the sounds and effects on board.
The Boss Katana Air is truly the world's first wireless guitar amplifier. Powered by eight AA batteries (AC mains adaptor also included) it offers 7-10 hours playing time, kicking out 20 watts (2x 10w stereo) through it's two 3" speakers (30 watts when running on mains powers), meaning it's a perfect little amp for buskers.
What makes the Air so unique though is it's built-in, super low latency digital wireless system. Just charge the transmitter up in it's docking port, and it'll give you 12 hours of wireless playing time, with no interference our delay between your guitar and the amp.
Control-wise, it's very similar to the popular Katana 50 and 100 models. There's 5 amp types to choose from, EQ controls and a comprehensive effects section that pairs with Boss' Tone Studio App, so you can wirelessly edit all of the amps parameters from your phone or tablet. Other features include USB connectivity (so you can use the amp as an audio interface), aux in, headphones/recording out and Bluetooth connectivity for streaming backing tracks through the amp.
Take a quick look an listen as PMTVUK take the Katana Air for a day out at the beach, and make sure to check one out at your local Professional Music Technology...

6:33 that wasn't latency from the wireless, that was the speed of sound being what it is. It takes 100ms for sound to travel 35m (100feet), so roughly 1ms per foot.
I was just thinking that!
That's a killer video review. Boss will be proud.
That was f*cking AwEsomE! Dude, you almost cross the ocean and the thing was still transmitting!
Fun demo! I think BOSS/Roland hurt themselves a bit with the price, not that its unreasonable, but if it was $50-100 cheaper I would think they would gain whatever losses back with more sales. Cool amp for sure though.
Andrew Allheart exactly my thought about the price. I want to get one and I concur that what's holding me back it's only a matter of it being priced at $400. I think I fair price would've been $350.
Especially considering that a compact wireless system every bit as good as what boss has included can be had from $40-70 on Amazon. Throw that at a THR10 and you’ve basically made the $300 price point the target they should be at.
And no usb record?
Crikey. I never expected to see Southsea beach in a guitar gear video :o)
Great Demo Sam! Yes, I'm getting one.
Great review thanks - entertaining and informative with many different styles of music as examples 😃👍
Thanks mate very entertaining i have ordered one can’t wait.
Damn Sam that reverb so calm great demo 👍🤘
great demo...very creative and enjoyable!!!
Awesome video man! :)
Thankyou for your detailed review
Great demo!
Fun and great demo!
Great demo thanks
Good demo And some good playing
Amazing review!!! How did you get it to be so clear on the beach part of the video!? Sounds amazing?
Great review 💁🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sounds amazing. 👍
great vid! very fun! I wish it was that warm in the UK now. I have owned a Yamaha THRIII for almost 3 years now and I love it - not because of the tones (I mostly run it on clean with a pedal board in front) and many other rivals esp the Boss Katana and Positive Grid Spark easily match it on tones, but it love it for the fact that a) it has a rechargeable battery (which unfortunately makes it very expensive like any Electric Cars) so can take up the garden and use as a radio or 30W quality wifi speaker and b) it has the Line 6 wireless transmitter built in, the same way the Boss Katana air does with their proprietary wireless tech. Problem for me (and many other people out there in internet land is: as good as the Yamaha is, the sodding thing has gone up the swanny after 2.5yrs..... after plugging and unplugging it a millions times over past two years, the AC adapter input has knacked, rendering the whole thing a £450 waste of money. So p****d off with Yamaha that their great product hasn't lasted even 3 yrs (and Andertons won't give me a refund as the Warranty is long gone). Ferkin piece of sht. SO as good as that product is, I don't recommend it as the Yamahas are so flaky (see myriads of internet posting of people having all sorts of problems with them). Think they must be chinese made or something. It's annoying as my whole set up is based on the Line 6 wifi set up so really don't want to switch to the Boss wifi set up instead as it'll cost me a ton....like Apple v PC.... wish I'd have bought the Boss Katana wireless in the first place.
2 years for a £450 quid amp is shit. I have my grandad's Marshall stack from the 1960's and that's still going strong. Blimin (not so-)cheap consumer electronics. Anyway well done PMT, wish I;d have seen this vid 3 yrs ago! doh.
Great Amp, very funny beach-review and AWESOME playing !!! 💪👌
Greetings from Austria
Jürgen 🎸
p.S.: My No.1 practice amp is the Line6 Micro Spider, but I think I have to go to a music store tomorrow ... ! 😅
Could you play bass with this? Since im regularly busking I don’t really need to shell out money for an actual bass amp when im not even getting gigs but this looks great to play bass with if your just busking. Any info or tips from anyone would be appreciated.
Seems like a perfect fit for a guy like me who has played acoustic for decades. I am just dipping my foot into Telecaster territory and I want something small for the living room that I could also use for home recording. The wireless feature is icing on the cake. This would be easy to mic and run in isolation. Thanks for the fantastic demo!!!
Adam Greenwell now that you say isolation!
@@alternativeliving4211 LOOOOOL
Do you play with your pinky touching the pick guard? Great review btw
wow this is nice for outdoor
So how do you hook this thing to the Boss WAZA Air headphones at same time and jam threw headphones and the amp simultaneously. Gotta be a way
I agree, $100 cheaper and sales jump up drastically
Great video. Like it.
The Boss Katana Air Manual indicates that Ni-Cad rechargeable batteries are also usable.
I think they would have to be charged in a stand-alone charger.
(KATANA AIR MANUAL - Page 5 - "Battery Operation").
I was hopeful when I saw "at the beach": I play couple times a week with some friends at beach here in Thailand, entertain folks at sunset. They have Cube Street EX so lots of volume. Been using Fender Mini Mustang: great but not loud enough, along with a few other combos. So I must ask "Why don't we get to hear the damn amp at the beach?" recording off line out doesn't cut it. How frickin loud is this and how much distortion (unwanted type)?
I got the Vox Audio which is great plugged in but anemic on batteries, cleans quieter than a Micro Cube.
Cut the cutesy beach stuff and play real music on a real beach. Too much to ask, I reckon
Cool man!’
Here comes the ☀️
this the vox adio or the yamaha thr for sound qualty?
Bty, it would've been reaaally great if it had wireless footswitches to manage the pedals and had multiple channels as 50w and up versions
How do you change between channels?
Best review
At long distances, the latency between the transmitter and the amp isn't the problem, as the time doesn't change, (relatively speaking, as the only increase in time would be from the extra distance the signal traveled at the speed of light.) The extra latency you hear comes from the extra time it takes for the sound waves have to travel the extra distance to your ears, and you would get the same latency if you used a hard wire cord lead at the same distance.
very good point!! speed of sound v speed of light, yes the latency is the delay in your ears hearing what you just played, nothing to do with the transmitter.
Love this little amp! but still trying to find rechargeable batts that last more than 3hrs and a 12v car adapter
Can someone explain why every video of this amp has a mic by it?? Does this amp have to be mic'd to be actually heard??
That's a nice weezer song haha , greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Anyway, the demo was awesome
Can it be plugged in too?
I am *so* interested in this one, but the newer Yamaha THR II seems to beat it out with an onboard tuner, a chargeable lithium battery, and a more full sound overall. The THR's choice of effects is paltry by comparison, so I'm hoping Boss answers with an Air Mk2 with all of those features and an overall sound quality that rivals the THR. What would *really* bring it over the edge would be an effects loop to allow use of loop pedals, or if we really wanna get crazy, an onboard looper.
totally agree
Delay does not come from the wireless, it comes from sound travelling speed from the amp to your ears. Cheers.
I can't get my Katana Air to sound clean, it sounds noisy and crackly no matter what setting I use. But sounds great when I plug it in with a cable direct. I wonder if I have a bad Transmitter.
Probably!
The latency comes from the distance and the speed of sound. It would be the same problem with a cable... (343,2 m/s and ~50m distance) => 145 mSec Delay
So the app used on the air will not work with katana 50 etc??? Have to use pc??
Right! It’s crazy to me that Boss hasn’t figured this out yet. I don’t want to use my PC to change amp settings.
@@WowzaGuy I never bought one but the idea of the amp at the time was cool minus the amp settings. App etc. Hahah. I guess the Spark is the answer to that? And and Bluetooth 2 way input device.
My god this amp can’t get any better
yes it can.....cab outputs! ;)
100 quid cheaper would make it better. I'd snap one up straight away :)
Can you play also backup tracks from your phone via Bluetooth?
Yes
Sam: it's like 30 degrees in this room
Americans: Damn that's really cold
Here comes the sun, was the song to guess.
Love mine. Only thing it’s missing is a looper
looper, mic in, and a cab out and it would be amazing. Hope to see that inversion 2
What's the battery life with those 8 AA batteries?
he said 7 hours of playing time
Amp cranked up w/ Bluetooth on playing back track about 4-5 hrs w/ heavy duty alkaline batt and 3hrs w/ rechargeable. Also haveto remove batteries to charge them, gets annoying after a while
In Australia, the price is $650. if you want to get the guitar end wireless transmitter, that is another $150. I have no doubt that this is a fantastic product but at $800, it is double the price it should be. I am looking for my first practice amp, and think I will go with the Katana mini. In the Australia, that is $140. That is an unjustified price difference. The AC powered amps at $800 would be much better purchases that the Air.
what if i want to add a pedal between guitar and the amp?
Easy. Cable between guitar and pedal. Transmitter on output of pedal.
@@IainMNorman nice ty
Then you buy a different amp that isn’t wireless.
can i connect bluetooth headphones to the amp?
nope
Thumbs-up because I had the same question! That would be awesome.
Maya Stone no, and you probably don’t want to, Bluetooth headphones still suffer from lag compared to wired ones.
One's Cream sunshine of your love
Can I connect an electric acoustic guitar to this katana air???
I would assume it's like every other amp and you can plug the wireless bud into anything that has a 1/4" jack. lol
You all sound like you're just on a price drop bandwagon.
It's price is good, for an amp with usability that no other has. Boss price the other models so fantastically that it's only safe to assume that this is also priced quite well for what it's giving you. Guess we have to wait for a competitor to get close to see if the price is different.
I owned the Katana 100watt. It wasn't bad, but the effects were just awful, which was a huge surprise considering Boss is an fx pedal company. And I kept having to modify the tones using the software with each of my guitars just to get a halfway acceptable sound. Ended up selling it. Still waiting for a low volume amp that sounds great, not just decent.
Today im checking the Boss katanarrair....
MegaJiiRo I was thinking the exact same thing 😆
Got one for bass???
Boss kataner?
Nice piece of gear. About $100 too much for the small 3" speakers.
Here comes the Sun by George Harrison/ The Beatles 1969
Hmm, Katana Air, 3" speakers, 30W for US$400 or Katana 50 MKII, 12" speaker, 50W for US$230...I think I know which one I'll be getting. Wireless is nice but not US$170 nicer.
30 Degrees thats perfect! Come down to us and feel the real heat! hehe
7:15 HOW DARE YOU SIRE?!
Did you mean sire or sir? lol
Shame it hasn't got a vocal set up as well. Ultimate busking amp.
Is there out put
Out put at the rear ?

doh! I didn't even realize that. And that's one of my fav songs ever.
Missed School's out too.
distortion channels don't sound as well modeled as the clean channel.
Alice cooper, schools out for summer.
Its 30°s inside thats nothing compared to an aussie summer lol
There is no “r” in Katana.
In England, there is. Not sure why but yeah
Accents, yo. It happens.
Way too expensive, buy the katana mini and never look behind
Batteries wtf are we in the 80's?
Where is long haired guy?
Is nice but the material is very poor plastic. For that money. Prefer the Spark.
Sound is not as good as the vox adio
amazing fucking amp but worth half what it is lets be real
It’s still 500 bucks
Why he keeps calling it Katana Rea?😂
Sounds more like Kotaner Eh. lol
Do a give away bdw love from India
I don't think you can play from India. 10 metre range
Tried to watch this review . . . but I lost patience before they ever stopped goofing around on the beach. Get to the review!
All wireless is killing us slowly.
If you believe that, why do you have internet?
I predict:
Life Is Deadly...
@@SHADOWBLADER881 Remember back, way back before wireless, there was this thing called ethernet connection. It's still around and is the hardcore gamers choice, along with anyone else who wants a reliable connection or has concerns about any potential health implications from wireless.
I LOVE playing guitar and I LOVE this amp - but honesty, guitar amps (and even loud radios for that matter) do NOT belong at a beach. The beach is a place to RELAX and listen to the waves, the wind and the seagulls....NOT to listen to some dude playing guitar licks (no matter how good he is) Don't get me wrong - it was a good location for a demo, but let's stop the noise pollution on the beaches please!
Rap music is noise pollution wherever its played
no review. just the presentation. I'm tired of this katana air hype. it doesn't sound good at all. compared to yamaha THR or VOX adio. you cannot use USB for mod or tweaking, just your bluetooth app. I love the concept, but the sound quality is big disappointment.
mikku marttinen Yeah same, idk the sound just feels like.. Digital. Like it's really unnatural & computer generated rather than coming from an amp. The Vox Adio Air GT sounds far much better than this with editable presets & don't even let me start how good the Yamaha THR10 sounds.
Yep I can relate to that I have two THR10C for stereo amp setup I don't care it's not wireless, the sound is huge with these ones.
