When I swallow my food, it just sits at the back of my throat and than I get nervous, like my heart starts racing thinking it won't go down ,and than I start coughing and than I can finally concentrate and swallow it down.

I have difficulty swallowing food and saliva for a few months now
I wanted to share what helps me sometimes...
For momentary relief of difficulty swallowing saliva try rubbing some of an alcoholic drink called Arak on the neck and chest.. from what I've experienced it helps relax the neck area a little..
I really hope everyone will feel good and get better soon...

I've been having this since I was a teen I am now 42 years old... Didn't even know this condition had a name... It will often happen when I eat something super dry like chicken or steak... Or if I don't chew enough before swallowing... It can also happen when i'm tired or stressed... It will happen every now and then... It really sucks... the treatment is to when you are tired or nervous... Have a soup !

I have stress-induced dysphasia. When under stress something at the bottom of the esophagus closes off and food & drink will simply back up at that point. Sometimes I won’t notice until a couple of mouthfuls have already stopped at the bottom of the esophagus. At that point I panic and my mouth involuntarily begins producing saliva in anticipation of vomiting. Frequently, I will look back and realize I was already anxious even before eating. Most of the time I will stop eating and just try to calm myself or go outside for a change of scenery. And usually the food will eventually pass. But occasionally I’ve nearly passed out due to the blockage.

I have had a problem swallowing for over 10 years now and have had to resort to buying category D soft meals.
When I was younger, I had no major problem swallowing down most foods. But, because of a choking incident
when I was around 10 years old, I began to avoid foods that were hard and crunchy, which tend to stick down
the back of my throat. The last time I ate meat was back in the 1980's, it was steak, and it got stuck half way
down my gullet, I kept swallowing, gulping, and drinking water, and it did eventually go down. But, I have not
eaten any red meat since, apart from minced beef. The condition has got worse over the years, and I have found
that having a small drink of alcohol, usually Gin, really helps me relax my throat, and my mind when eating.
This is because I get really uptight when eating. I did begin eating peanuts some time ago, but made sure that
I chewed them up thoroughly before swallowing them. Then one night whilst in bed, I sat up to drink some
water, not realizing that an un chewed nut was still in my mouth inside my cheek. And, the second a took the
water, the nut went down, and got stuck somewhere inside the gullet. I could not swallow it down, nor cough
it back up. I panicked, and had to stay up for the rest of the night, in case it came back up and got stuck in
my airway. It was really scary. This swallowing problem has took what should be a pleasurable experience,
and turned it into a nightmare.

I have this problem you are not alone, I'm 34 I had a choking incident with roast potatoes ever since I can't swallow solid foods, became a vegetarian because meat was impossible to swallow now alcohol is the only thing that helps me to relax and be able to eat. I can't live my life like this anymore but the doctors where I am are incompetent and I feel like I've been misdiagnosed or they don't know anything about this curse.

Many thanks for this. To clarify further how you manage the conditions that cause swallowing difficulties: oesophageal strictures or cancer require dilatation or stenting, and a proton pump inhibitor is started if the stricture is benign. Candidiasis is treated with oral fluconazole. The underlying cause is targeted with external compression of the oesophagus. Gastroparesis can be treated with metoclopramide or erythromycin, and speech and language therapists are very important for advising on food consistency, correct positioning for swallowing, thickened fluids etc.

For around 10 years now, I have had a problem swallowing. I begin each day with soggy Weetabix. but
even that often is hard to get down, unless accompanied by a hot drink with sweetners. I am currently
buying category D pre-mashed meals, but these are quite expensive, and the portions are small. So i
usually cook extra broccolli which I mash down, then grate some cooked chicken or ham, in order to
get some extra protein. I sometimes drink alcohol to relax my gullet, if I am going to eat something
a bit more substancial, such as minced beef. I remember some time ago, around 30 years ago, eating
medium rare steak, and it stuck half way down my throat, and I was in a group of friends. I tried not to
panick, but I choked on a small tablet when I was around 10 years old, and have not had the confidence
to swallow pills since. So, I tend to crush them with food, could this be making my condition worse?

Well, I am now drinking Alcohol before every meal because it is the only way I can get food down.
Maybe it is a Neurological thing. But unless I have a drink, there is no place on earth that I can
get the food to go down. Maybe Xanax or some other muscle relaxant would help, but here in the
UK, I "Can't Have It" because they say it is "Addictive" but then, so is Alcohol" and a lot more
"Destructive" to the body in the long run.

1-2 years ago I was trying to swallow what I remembered to be a piece of taco and I almost choked cause it didn’t go down I panicked but thankfully didn’t choke but then I didn’t eat for the next 2 days because of the anxiety of that and I didn’t think about it because I knew it would happen again if I though about it unfortunately that didn’t work and just got worse and worse I couldnt swallow my own spit or water or anything went to a doctor they x rayed my throat it showed that nothing happened and that I’m fine then they gave me anxiety medication it helped a little with my already crippling anxiety that was caused from it but never helped mostly with the eating problem but no anxiety makes it hard to be scared of choking but I quit cause I found out how unhealthy the medication is long term and so far 1-2 years later I found out that there’s actually a name and treatment for it right about now and I will be having to check that out for sure I started bodybuilding to get rid of the stress I gained 10 of my pounds back after loosing 70 pounds going from 180 to 108 pounds within months but can’t gain anymore weight cause of my swallowing I’ve tried hard foods soft foods liquid foods nothing helps a lot but I am able to eat way more than I used to be able to eat and swallow

M and other procedures to fix this yet in the UK my doctor keeps saying it's psychological? I know it's physical it's the muscles or nerves system in my neck. When I am correctly diagnosed and get help I am going to sue the doctors for leaving me to live in this torture for over 3 years.

They gave him amoxicillin and another medication for his esophagus and it’s been helping so far. But it’ll come back sometimes. @@logix7 He has an appointment to get an endoscopy done with his esophagus. The nurse said they do these procedures all the time and she can tell what it is already but they have to do it just to diagnose what exactly it is then go with the procedure to put him to sleep and dilate his esophagus so he’ll be able to swallow again. Hopefully it’s that easy as it sounds and everything goes smoothly. But without insurance everything could amount to 1k. So we also have to wait on that.

I don’t have any problems swallowing liquids though. I also feel like I’m choking whenever I just try to swallow saliva and it’s affecting my breathing and sleeping. The only thing that seems to help is having an alcoholic drink, which might just make me not notice as much lol. For me it was gastrointestinal. I had really bad acid reflux and a narrowing of the esophagus and didnt know. The dr. stretched my esophagus and I take prilosec every now and then. Acid can cause this. I could not breath at all at night, my nose was so dry, I felt like I was suffocating. It was acid. It's much better now but I still have those moments when I have to have liquid near by in order to eat a turkey sandwich or it gets stuck.
