A Wednesday in October

  • One of my favorite parts of 2023 was on a particular Wednesday in October. In 2014, Serena and I started dating in New York City and almost ten years later we returned together. Serena and I had a lot of ideas over the years of what our own wedding would be like. After all, we’ve both documented the lives of others for almost 15 years now.
For many reasons, eloping made a lot of sense to us and we had a few free days this October. Blake Sams graciously let us get ready in his apartment while our dear friend Emily Artistry went above and beyond with not only hair, but assisting throughout the day. Corbin Gurkin and her husband Thatcher Cook are some of our closest friends and they agreed to photograph the day for us. Corbin's eye for details and Thatcher's eye for moments were exactly what we wanted.
We treated our wedding like one of our many trips together. We would somewhat plan it, potentially wander for hours, and find something beautiful instead of the original destination. Who needs Bethesda Terrace (even though you planned for it) when you can wander into Chinatown and end up at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory?! Instead of a reception, we just went to a Michelin Starred Korean BBQ restaurant, Cote. At the end of the night, we came back to our hotel at Nine Orchard and said our vows to each other before we fell asleep. I put a lot of pressure on myself based on what I filmed and have seen, but in the end, this was the perfect day for us as a couple.
This video is just a small glimpse of that experience filmed by ourselves and with the help of Corbin & Thatcher. I didn't want to end the year being another statistic of a videographer who never edited their own wedding, so this teaser will save me for now.
