Just put silicone into those drainage holes and that will solve the problem. I have the Tilopa and now the X50. Also bought the Roller Carry On v2. Still getting used to the the X50. It has lots of features. The harness is awesome. The only major problem I have with it is that it opens for quick access only on the right. Also unlike the Protactic 450AW the X50 quick access flap opens with the flap cover "in my way" or "in my face" which is not the way I want it. But the protactic is a somewhat camera gear only bag and not so much suited for hiking and camping. For city travelling and shooting the Protactic 450AW is a hard case that offers protection and is less complicated. Only drawback of the Protactic 450AW is the harness is not well suited for long walks with heavy gear. For adventure travel I'll use the X50 or even go back to my Tilopa but the latter is IMO a bit heavy. Nice video review. Daniel Yong.

Hey thanks so much dude! Haha that always happens! That bag was the one I mentioned in the review but hadn't seen in person. It looks like a much improved model to their regular bag. These bags though are seriously the Bees Knees. Pricey, but well worth it! Let me know how the wandrd goes 👍
Love the review, does the back stand upright when put down? I have a Lowepro, and that's the thing that bugs me the most, bags falling over all the time. This bag seems to have a flat large base, and might stand up...
Question! Will this bag pass as a “personal item”? If its not stuffed to the top etc. I was hoping i can have this bag + a carry on, if possible, i hate checking in my baggage! Thank you!
Hey Lana! Ahh I don't know. It pretty prob looks too big. If it has no insert then maybe. But I wouldn't risk it. Better off empty inside your luggage and using a soft bag to take clothes as personal item.
Thanks for the kind words! TBH I haven't actually had the V2 to play with because I already have the others ha. If you can find a V1 at a good price you wont be disappointed. If i was going to buy a new one and had no others, then go the V2. :)
Hi, great informative video, thanks! Would you recommend the 30L version over the 50L for mountain hiking 2 to 3 days max? Would I be able to fit a Sony A7R4 + 100-400mm + 24-105mm but also a small tent, sleeping bag, and some usual camping gear? for info, I am the same size as you (1m71) so I thought the 50L might be too big and might also not be allowed as carry-on by some airlines? thanks for your input. JM
Hey mate, thanks so much for the love. glad you got something out of it! Honestly, it sounds like you'd need the 50x. An overnighter you might get away with the 30ltr strapping stuff to the outside, but even then it's pushing it. I'd go the 50x any day for overnight hikes. In regards to size, the 50ltr is fine. I have the 70x as well and it fits me fine. The waist belt is always the issue being so skinny, but you can always cut that down if need be. Shimoda has a video online showing how to do that. Carry-on is going to be an issue. I think if you are domestic in the states you will be ok, and really most places you should be ok, but on small planes, it might not fit unless you turn it to the side in the overhead locker. I doubt it would fit under a seat unless it was quite empty. I've not flown with the 50 but mates have and they were fine. Unfortunately, there is always a compromise. Hope that helps mate!
@@etchd_ thank you so much for your prompt and detailed answer. It was indeed my thoughts even though I like the size of the 30L I will go for the 50L as I like a neatly packed bag! I usually spend 1 to 2 nights up camping/trekking in the mountains so it’s easy to find yourself with quite a bit of gear and a bit of food too so your message comforts my initial thoughts. Thanks a lot again and keep posting! Cheers
@@jmtholl9528 Yep, sounds like the 50 is the ideal for you then! I actually dont have the 50, but wish i did haha. I have every other bag though so can;'t complain. My mates have it though and love it!
Hi there !! So i ll fit a nikon z9 full body too, i mean without compromising the laptop conpartment? Wich insert is that you show us here? Thanks and sorry for my english…
Hi Diogo, thanks so much! it does indeed. It has little eyelets all over the bag so you can attach the Shimoda 'Booster' straps. I use them to attach sleeping bags and tents!
@@etchd_ I have ordered the X 30. I have a XT3 so the size should be ideal for camera and a couple of lens. The big issues normally is holding a tripod and this looks like it has the ideal solution!
Ordered the 30 and 50. Unfortunately, my avy gear + bladder do not fit well in the rear compartment of the 30, its just a little too short for my BCA 270 probe. I'd love the X50 but I'm 5'6" and the rigid frame hits my neck when I try too look up. Short torso'd folk beware, and makes me wish I just had a couple extra inches. Would love the X30 with a slightly bigger rear compartment for avy gear.
Hi Erik, ahh damn! That sucks mate! Yes the bladder problem is a tricky one with bag designs like these. I had that problem with an Osprey bag I had when hiking, alright when you're descending and looking down but climbing is a nightmare. Hopefully you can find a workaround mate. Good luck
@@etchd_ Ended up keeping the 30L, and it is really just a great bag! I find that I usually have room for a bladder in the upper section, with a plastic sheet covering the camera section if I really trust my bladder that day. Thanks for a great review by the way! Have you ever tried out the Lowepro Powder 500? Curious as to a larger brain style pack for longer trips.
@@erikpatak ahh right! The 30 is such a versatile bag hey! Depending what camera kit I have in the bag, I'll also squash a water bottle in with the gear. But only withy Olympus haha. Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately I haven't tried it. I've not looked at any new bags of late. Does it look good?
Really appreciate your review. This may sound like a silly question but I have a 30L and a 85L backpack. I'm looking for a bag in between around 50 L. I've been eyeing up that shimoda action x50. Now my question is that I only have a Sony a7iii and the 24-105 lens, and soon the 20 1.8. the only other photography gear I carry is a tripod and filters. Do you think this bag is a little overkill for that little of photography gear. Should I just pick up a normal hiking bag and find a camera insert? Thanks a bunch, I subbed
Hey Sean, thanks so much for the kind words mate! No silly questions here! That's why I created the review! TBH it does sound like the x50 might be a little overkill! that being said, you have plenty of growth options should you want to carry more camera gear in the future, and the bag is bombproof. There aren't too many other bags out there (non camera specific) that are as rugged, nor water resistant. Also without the rear flap, using another insert is a pain in the ass. I have done it before and it wasn't ideal. Sorry I can't be of more help. It really depends on your budget, but for photography practicality, the x50 is the way to go if you can afford it.
This video is really well done, fantastic job and glad to have discovered your channel! I see you also love the v2 explore-in what scenarios would you recommend this action x30 over it? I’m planning on using a smaller sling on city trips, and am only buying one of these two for day/overnight trips in nature/small villages/mountains, and super torn…
Hi mate, thanks so much! I use the Action for most adventure based trips just because of the size really. But the Action goes with me on most small easy shoots or day shoots where I'm not taking a huge amount. I have a peak design sling but hate it. So uncomfortable. The Action x 30 is still my pick if I could only have one. Simply because the roll top ads an extra 7 litres if i need it. The 30ltr in Explore V2 though is also an epic bag and so comfortable. It could also be a great option if you dont need the roll top!
@@etchd_ fantasric, thanks for the detailed reply! The peak design sling is the one I have too (though I figure it will be comfortable enough if I’m just carrying a body and a couple small lenses for a day in the city) but thinking I’ll pick up the x30 for everything else! Thanks again
I see you have a Peak Design Capture Clip on the bag? How does it work with the shoulder straps? Does the strap design make it sit too high toward your shoulders?
Good question. I have quite broad shoulders and chest, so I need to mount the camera in the position shown in the video. If i put it higher it kind of pinches into my shoulder. Where I have it though is perfect for me, at least with the style and size cameras I'm using. Sometimes i find that it rides a little higher across the day, but it's easy to pull back down. All in all it works great. What size camera are you using?
Cool review man! Question: Can I access the entire backpack through the roll pocket at the top (or the top zip) ? I know there is a separator between the top compartment and the camera compartment. Can I remove that and make one big compartment? Cheers
Hi mate, so sorry for the late reply! Im sure you have already found your answer, but in case you haven't, then yes. That compartment zips out. So you can choose how you like!
Hey man! Can you put the Action X30 bag as a personnal item on flights? Sorry if you explain this in your video, i'm watching it right now but this question just poped in my head and i wanted to write it before i forget :)
I think this is the best review for this pack that I've seen to date. I feel that you have covered pretty much everything. The only item I'd be a little concerned about is the zipper on the camera access cover. It looks like it not only holds that big backflap closed, but also bears the weight of the pack when the waist belt is used. Have you noticed any stress induced reliability issues with that? Cheers.
Hi Chris! So sorry for late reply. I've been absent from yt on some jobs. I'm glad you dig the review. I like to do these the way I'd like to hear them if I was a consumer. I agree the back zipper bears the weight, but I can tell you now there's no issue whatsoever! It's a burly zipper and because the bags pressed against your back there's no room for play anyways. The F stop, wandrd and other brands all open from the back and I'm not sure of anyone who had any issues there! Hope that helps!
@@etchd_ Hey Matt, thank you for the reply. I really appreciate it. Interestingly, I posted questions about this bag on about half a dozen You Tube reviews, and you were literally the ONLY reviewer who took the time to reply. I've deleted my questions from the other streams, and added your channel to my subscriptions. Thanks again. Oh yeah, I've also ordered the X30. Hoping that it will sort out my carry requirements. Cheers again.
@@yukonchris hi Chris, ahh no worries at all! I generally try to respond to everyone who asks questions, sometimes takes a bit due to other commitments haha. I'm glad you could make a decision! I really love the bag, it's my go to for almost all shoots now. I'd like the larger size for longer trips, but still have the 60! Thanks for chucking us a follow 🙏 stay tuned as I'll have more Shimoda stuff in a few months time!
Shimoda action series vs atlas athlete, anventure bags which brand is better. I own a atlas athlete bag and iam a little dissapointed on how narrow the shoulder harness is particularly the end that goes under the armpit too narrow. The shimoda action x looks interesting but iam debating if its worth it to buy a new bag thanks for the video. Another negative about water bladder location being in the back is when you lay your pack down all that weight on the bladder can burst the bladder i noticed in camera bags side mounted bladder pockets are best like in the atlas series bags.
Hey Jason. Thanks so much for the msg. I personally haven't used an atlas but I've seen them in the flesh. I like the rigidity of the Shimoda bags and the material gives me more confidence in the poor weather. Side mounted bladder could be good, what size does it hold do you know?
Nice video man. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for this review. Was your height the reason why you went for the X30? Because I am small as well and I think that the X50 might be too big. Also, I am not a photographer. Do you think this bag would serve well for hiking/camping trips or city trips as travel bag or do you think it might be overkill for non photographers? Peace :)
Hi Kervin, thanks for the feedback and support! I actually got the x30 because that was my allocation as an ambassador. I was a little late to the party, so the larger ones were already given out. Having said that, its more than enough for most of my trips. The only time I want the larger one is for overnight trips or when I'm needing to carry my video camera and gimbal. I stand 171cm tall and have a quite broad and longer torso, so I have the back straps set to the Large height which is fine. I don't believe that your height will be an issue with the larger bag as you can just put the straps to small. If your waist is smaller than mine, you might need to do the 'belt hack' that I linked below. I might do that too. It would be an awesome bag for hiking and camping trips as it is damn rugged, but still quite light. Because it has the Alu frame inside, it can take a large amount of weight. I wish other outdoor bags had the same straps and pocket layouts as this bag. The only thing I could think of is that if you are wanting the water bladder in another spot and closer to your back, this won't be good for that. Proper non-photographic bags will have the bladder against your back for weight distribution. What would be good for travel is that that you can lay the bag down like a travel bag and access clothes or whatever you want from the back flap. Again, depends on what types of trips you are doing. Hope that helps!
@@etchd_ thanks a lot for spending the time to reply with such enthusiasm. Awesome! ...I am a water bottle kind of guy, so the water bladder issue would never affect me. I also never travel with a laptop so I plan to put the AER Go packable bag in that laptop compartment. I also like the idea that if I wished or needed to, I could hook things to the outside. But one more question: when hiking in the wild or walking in cities...is sweaty back ever a concern? If yes, at what temperatures is an issue? Because hiking backpacks have much more air flow. (I am 165cm and have the same waist as you, so x50 with my height might be too big even with the adjustable shoulder staps probably, but you seem to fit plenty in the X30. I never go to the artic so I should be fine with the x30 haha). Thanks again :)
@@kervinzamora7438 No worries mate. These bags are expensive, so I know how much research people put into everything before purchasing! I know I sure do. Waterbottles are perfect on this bag. I'd even go as far to say that its the best bag I've used hands down for water bottles seen as you can put them either side of the bag and fit one on the chest strap too. With the extra straps on the outside, you can pack a huge amount of gear. It really is quite impressive. It comes with the helmet strap too, which I forgot to show in the review. It's tiny and is great to strap big jackets to the outside of the bag. I hear you on the sweaty back thing. In short, yes you back will sweat much more than other bags. I have an ultra-light Osprey and have owned the Deuter, both of which have mesh suspension net backing. Honestly though, for me as a photographer, I don't really mind. it's something that hasn't ever bothered me, and my back was drenched throughout India with my Explore 40. It does have air channels which help, and the foam doesn't stick to your back which is good. It could def be a concern if all you were doing is hot and humid hiking. I think you will be fine with the shoulder strap length, it's just the belt and chest strap that might be an issue. The x30 fits so much inside! I could do an overnight trip with it if I didn't have camera gear inside. Good luck with whatever decision you arrive at. Remember you can get 10% off if you go through my links. But do shop around regardless :)
Hey mate! thanks so much for the love. I haven't tried it with a slim case yet, but with my UAG ultra-rugged case it does not. I am wanting to purchase something super slim and streamlined that acts more as a scratch-resistant barrier rather than full drop and crush protection. That would definitely fit it!
A solid review of the product, kudos to you. Sadly there's no retailer in Malaysia? Can this be ordered from Aust or NZ? or must I order from B&H Photo US? Intend to get both the X30 and X50. The inner core and opening flexibility are what draws me to this product. Malaysia's Equatorial climate do rain a lot and the waterproof element does help. Appreciate if you could show me any website that you bought yours from? My gear are Nikon Z7II and lenses, shoots mostly landscape Thank You

You'll need to go through that link for it to work and use that code. You have an awesome camera and I'd suggest getting the dslr core unit for the x50! Shoot me a message if you have issues!
Hi mate, yes the 30Ltr is a great everyday bag. However; the straps are quite wide which could be annoying in warmer weather if you aren't using it for carrying camera gear. You might be better suited to a regular cheaper bag if you are using it just for a day to day bag without camera gear!
Great video, VERY thankful you made this, perfect timing! I’m curious, as I’m considering this bag...while it looks like it can be absolutely stuffed, but how does it handle if it’s only carrying a few items. I’m a video guy, but I’d like my main bag be versatile enough for daily carry. I’m drawn to this bag because of the comfort and straps, I have serious back issues. Thanks again!
Hey mate! Thanks so much for the kind words! It's actually great when it's hardly full. Because of that roll top if sits quite small. The only thing is the straps are quite wide, so it isn't as conspicuous looking. However that doesn't bother me as it's bloody comfortable and I like the look. Always have people asking me about it! If you have an insert inside, you'll not be able to compress its width thigh beyond why the width of the insert is. Again, doesn't really bother me! What camera are you rocking for video? I managed to fit my pocket 4k, EM1MKIII, 5 primes, gorilla pod, video mic pro,, jacket, 4 NPF batteries and whole lot of other things inside it the other day! The 50 would be better suited if your set up is bigger. Ideally I'd rather the 50 so I could put the gimbal inside as well! Hope that helps 🙏
@@jasonnowwhat5041 ahh nice! Well my mate had a full frame Sony in his bag there and couple lenses. The thirty might be a tad small for anything else if you have the gimbal inside. I strap mine to the outside sometimes. However I just got the rs2, so hopefully I can fit it inside one day 😁

Hi Rob, sure thing. From the base to the top of the frame is 54cm. That doesn't include the roll top clip that sits a bit higher but that is negligible. When fully stuffed and the roll top is about to burst but still shut its around 74cm. Hope that helps! it's quite a small bag still.
Hi mate! I haven't yet only bevause the 30x is a tad too small and I have the explore 60. That said, if I went minimalist it could easily be done. The 50x would be ideal!

Love the review, does the back stand upright when put down? I have a Lowepro, and that's the thing that bugs me the most, bags falling over all the time. This bag seems to have a flat large base, and might stand up...
Hi Ralph, it sure does! this is one of the biggest selling points of the bag for many people. It sits up empty or full :)
Can you attach peak design capture camera clip to the straps of this bag? Thanks
Hi mate. Yep you can! I actually covered that point in the vid!
@@etchd_ Thnx! Wow i must have been distracted when you mentioned it haha
@@etchd_ you do overnights camping expedition with this bag? Can you fit your tent, sleeping bag, clothes and food in it as well as camera gear?
@@etchd_ hmmm good idea thank you!!
Great review! Amazing! I'm considering buying x30. Just don't know if should I go for v2 or isn't worh it? Any suggestion? Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words! TBH I haven't actually had the V2 to play with because I already have the others ha. If you can find a V1 at a good price you wont be disappointed. If i was going to buy a new one and had no others, then go the V2. :)
THanks for this rev!
Thanks for the love mate
Great review! DO you think the x30 can hold a full size dslr like the nikon D6?
Hi mate! Thanks so much 🙏 yes it does. I've tested a gripped d750 inside. 👍
Hi there !! So i ll fit a nikon z9 full body too, i mean without compromising the laptop conpartment? Wich insert is that you show us here? Thanks and sorry for my english…
Great review. Does it have expansion strap attachments on the bottom, like F-Stop bags?
Hi Diogo, thanks so much! it does indeed. It has little eyelets all over the bag so you can attach the Shimoda 'Booster' straps. I use them to attach sleeping bags and tents!
Great video, Ive been looking for a decent bag for a long while now. Ive just preordered one :)
Ahh great to hear mate! Which one did you choose?
Hey dude, you sure can! It goes with me on all my flights! Back when I could fly ha
@@etchd_ haha i just bought one yesterday im soo happy thanks 😊 i have a flight in January to costa rica can’t wait!!
@@YoussefHallouly Epic man! I hope the trip goes well! So much good wildlife there!
@@etchd_ Thnx ! :)
@@etchd_ the atlas can fit a osprey 2.5 liter hydration bladder i haven't tried any other brands or sizes.
@@jaysun070476 oh I see! That's pretty decent. You'd want to counter balance that well with gear as it would be horrible on your back after awhile!
Can a water bladder be put in the laptop area?
Hi mate! You can but there is nothing at the top to stop it from falling down under its own weight!
What do you use to re-waterproof the bag?
Hi mate, Nikwax tent is a good option. Check the Shimoda YT as they have the exact video to watch :)
@@etchd_ Thanks
Great review! Does the X30 fit your 15' MacBookPro with the case on? I have a 16' RMBP with a case and I am a bit worried.
Hey mate! thanks so much for the love.
My gear are Nikon Z7II and lenses, shoots mostly landscape
Thank You
Hi Hisham, thanks so much for the kind words. These bags would be perfect for your country, built for those conditions!
Yes, have a look in the description and you'll find links to the Australian site with a discount code! I think you can Get it shipped from there! You'll need to go through that link for it to work and use that code.
You have an awesome camera and I'd suggest getting the dslr core unit for the x50! Shoot me a message if you have issues!
Do you think it the 30l is also good as a every day carry bag?
@@etchd_ I’m rocking a Sony full frame setup, a few lenses and a gimbal. Sounds like the 30 should be plenty! Thanks for weighing in!

Also, are you able to measure how tall the bag is in practice when empty?
Hi Rob, sure thing. From the base to the top of the frame is 54cm. That doesn't include the roll top clip that sits a bit higher but that is negligible. When fully stuffed and the roll top is about to burst but still shut its around 74cm. Hope that helps! it's quite a small bag still.
Have you used the Action X for overnight or do you stick to the Explore for that?
Hi mate! I haven't yet only bevause the 30x is a tad too small and I have the explore 60. That said, if I went minimalist it could easily be done. The 50x would be ideal!
