- This digital clock is a truly functional useful timepiece for your home or office.
Please support this LEGO Ideas submission ideas.lego.com/s/p:fa3bcd9977...
The clock is sped up so that you can see several digit changes and lunar phase changes.
- Displays time in either 12- or 24-hour format
- Optional Lunar Phase display
- Optional Seconds display
- Optional Low-Profile configuration
- Optional wall outlet connection with USB charger
I wanted to create a digital clock with some new way of displaying the digits using 4 or less motors that did not require frequent battery changes.
The digits are arranged on the digit belts in a special order so that the upper and lower elements of the digits are shared adjacently.
Each minute, the motors rotate the digit belts to the appropriate position to display the current time.
The Large Hub is programmed to drive the digit motors and display the current lunar phase and seconds (in 5-second intervals).
The lunar Phase bezel rests securely over the hub and is easily lifted to access the hub buttons.
The hub may be folded to the back, disabling the lunar phase and seconds function to create a lower profile clock if desired.
The Powered UP Large Hub may be connected to a USB charger for continuous use without changing batteries.

The way you create digits out of half of the next/previous digits is really, really efficient and mind-blowing
Dude this is amazing! Make a short out of this and it'll blow up I guarantee it (those get mainstream really quickly haha). I hope this becomes a set one day!
Thanks, I'll consider it. Do you think I should wait until it shows up on Ideas (hopefully later this week)? In the meantime, I'll work the text overlay for the Short format.
@@darrellaldrich8334 I think definitely wait until the set appears on ideas. The average shorts user has no attention span or memory, so they need the link immediately. I for one, would love this set to become a mass-produced thing.😊
@@origamingmagic3571 lol good one. it's so true
Ok, Its on LEGO Ideas now.
Anything you think I should change or add to the Short video?
@@darrellaldrich8334 Yeah, the short is great! maybe a little background music or add some trendy music but turned all the way down to kill the algorithm?
Wow, great job!!!
Thank you so much 😀
I can definitely see this becoming a set! Great job mate!
Thanks, I hope so!
Amazing! Good luck with getting supporters on Lego ideas. The way you packed the segments of all digits on the belts is very clever. How did you come up with this arrangement? e.g. was this just a good idea, or result of some calculations?
It mostly occurred during a phone conversation with my brother. We discussed displaying 7-segment digits. I found that by alternating vertical and horizontal elements they would fit perfectly on a track. It then dawned on me that I could reuse the bottom elements of a digit for the top elements of another. Then I just played with arranging the best order.
@@darrellaldrich8334 Brilliant, and looks like the optimal solution. Now I kinda want to write a computer program to test if shorter belt is possible. Specifically, one can encode every number with some 2-letter string describing upper and lower part and then solve "shortest superstring problem", e.g. shortest string containing all 10 encoded numbers.
@@davidziemkiewicz1350 Check out the Digital Clock Calendar ua-cam.com/video/zo7i3MH7H8Y/v-deo.html .
It turns both the Hours Tens and Ones tracks with a single motor.
Wow that’s neat.
Thanks!
Seriously the best Lego digital clock I’ve ever seen in my whole entire life amazing how long did it take you to make?
The digits track was designed and constructed during a facetime chat one evening.
The rest of the clock was designed and assembled the next morning. The first program to run the clock and keep time was completed that afternoon.
Since then, I have been improving and adding features to the program.
Also, this is a complete redesign of the original chassis ua-cam.com/video/Ol5JYbCdf2A/v-deo.html
cool
Thanks!
I love these!
Thanks, maybe this will become a LEGO kit someday.
@@darrellaldrich8334 wouldn't that be awesome!!
Voted!
Thanks!
Can we have like building instructions or at least a vid of you assembling at leat the clock part?
Check my community tab. I'll put some renders of some of the components.
We'll see how that goes.
Wow, I'd love to be able to replicate this, do you have any sort of project that you're willing to share?
In the banner of my main page is a link to all my shared project files.
Check the description section of this video ua-cam.com/video/Ol5JYbCdf2A/v-deo.html for links to an earlier version of this clock.
