Danni & Joe
A great video, you two prove that's there is hope for the future. People your age willing to try anything to succeed and not rely on the bank of mum and dad. Big respect from an old timer.
Sneeze? Bright light? YEAH. It's called a sun sneeze. You're absolutely right, Joe.
Learn something new everyday!
You are a electrical genius
Beautiful 3 point turn - just a quick bounce off the rocks... 😄
😂😂
Nice water reflexes in the bath-room ceiling you got as it turned blue!
You've got similar minds. HA you're on the couch tonight mate!!
😂
Yes I too sneeze at brigjt lights. Can never look at the sun without a sneeze.
Strange isn’t it?!
I've noticed that you've gotten really good at talking to the camera, Joe, it's like we're having a chat!
It’s definitely taken some practice! Used to struggle looking at the camera and getting my words out correctly 😂
We have. A huge 6 stone British bull dog on our boat. Not cruel at all . Ours is a rescue and he gets more time outdoors than he ever did at a house. He loves it and has his own space
Aw lovely!
Love that blue.
Thank you!
Saw a dog once on a narrow boat, it was I think a Hungarian mountain dog. It was huge, but daft as a brush.
Beautiful!
Nice colour blue for the ceiling and great to see the water reflect on it too. Chuffed for you - milestones now being met. Plumbing and gas done - YOUR ON FIRE!!!
Yes we love the water reflections, thank you 😊
Well that was a bit hairy for you both. What’s so nice to watch is Joe you don’t seem worried. You take it in your stride and get on with it. It’s looking good so keep up the good work.
Got to stay positive with the build, all part of the adventure!
And an other thing, you two are so much more clever than I am . What a great job you are doing.
Thanks for your support!
Oh Guys! The lows & highs of renovating a boat. I really felt for you two when the gearbox went and the rudder bounced! We've been there, stuck across a river pulling our hair out. However, look at your beautiful kitchen. It's fabulous. Your colour choices are gorgeous. Thanks for the info on the pink paint, I'm awaiting a tester in the post 😊
Thank you Barbara! Definitely lots of highs and lows but hopefully it will all be worth while 😊
I have a Dutch barge and a border terrier although I'd say that the limit on dog sizes with a boat is the size you can comfortably pick up and carry when you need to.
Also I think it's a good idea to get the rudder pintles drilled so you can put a pin in them to stop the rudder being lifted off; although then if you hit something it could damage the rudder too.
We’ve had some surprising dog breeds pop up in the comments, even a Newfoundland 😳 we’re going to get the tiller bearing changed the next time she’s out the water so may look at the rudder then, thank you!
@@DanniandJoe Yeah, I think the type of dog depends on you really. One of the things I looked for when I found my boat was that my dog could move around the boat by himself and not need me to lift him up and down steps. The only thing he can't do is get off the boat himself, which is a good thing. 😊
Joe has a photic sneeze reflex, its very common.
jack russets are lovely little dogs
We love all dogs 😊
We had a beautiful Bullmastiff when we moved onboard. He loved boat life. He did get a wag injury on the end of his tail though through being in a confined space & being a happy boy. 😍
Ohh love mastiff’s, bless him! 😭
Always let the water run through the hose for a little while to flush out any detritus, also store the hose out of sunlight and block the ends of the hose whilst stored to stop earwigs, spiders etc crawling inside. Love the content. 👍👍
Had been reading about detritus just the other day! Brand new hose pipe we did rinse it out at home, didn’t think about the insets though! 😫
yes - looking at a bright light can bring on a sneeze!!
Agree. I was always told that if you feel a sneeze coming on then look up at a bright light and, sure enough, you sneeze!
Not great for driving at night 😂
Several problems solved this week and glad you found the water leak quickly. The gear box is just another twist in your story of the refit of the boat. The blue colour is fab and new fenders will no doubt assist. Well done guys and cheers Keith.
Thanks Keith! We will get the gearbox done as soon as we can!
Hello guys, we live on a narrowboat near Devizes and we have a Deerhound. He has no trouble with boat life but he does hog the sofa! Hoping everything goes well with your boat.
Ahhh lovely! Bless him!
I’ve seen lots of spaniels on boats, not too big but big enough to enjoy and go on long walks with. So impressed at how much you guys do yourselves, if I was to do this I would want to buy a ready built one!
They are a lovely, bouncy breed! Thank you 😊
Hi Danni and Joe. More progress - gas and running water, and Danni's painting energy, even after working long shifts - what a team ! You've both put in so much that you'll know your boat so well once aboard, and can be so proud of all your efforts. Your commitment and hard work is encouragement for us all. Excellent vlog again. Thank you. George and Trish.
Thank you so much! We can’t wait to be aboard!
Oh, it's not "half done" it is a cliffhanger to draw people back for the next episode in the continuing adventure!
Video out tomorrow 😊
For the breather. Look up pneumatic Hose and fittings. They come smaller than 1"
Will take a look!
Bless ya both. For you a rollercoaster but for us it is interesting to see how you cope with it all. Really enjoyed your vlog today and I love the handles. Good choice x
Thanks for watching!
We have a GSD x Staff on our boat. She is 30+ kg, so on the low end of large. I do not think size is the main issue. It is what sort of dog would fit with your lifestyle. How much exercise do they need, are they ok if you are out all day, how easy would it be to get a regular walker if you are cc ing and out a lot for work. Also think about how much grooming they will need. Our girl sheds all year round and needs a good brush at least once a week. Some breeds need a lot more grooming. I'm sure you'll know 'the one' as soon as you meet them. Shelters are usually happy for you to walk dogs so you can see what personality and size of dog will be right.
Yes you’re definitely right! We love brushing Joes parents dog, lots to think about!
Love the blue and really love the pink cabinet doors. Great visual "home" changes going on now. Thank you for sharing!
All the fun parts start now!
As camera pans around at points in this video I'm still struck by how bright and cheerful the interior colors are.
We love bright and cheerful!
Sneezing: Stepping into bright sunshine from a well shaded spot always makes me sneeze and I am told it is not unusual. You are not alone Joe!
Fender: If it is shorter than the rudder simply make sure you put the rudder hard over if about to hit something. If it is hard getting a long enough fender add a wooden block between fender and boat - perhaps with a flat top so it doubles as a step or even a place to put something such as a plant.
Plumbing: It always appear to be the case that something will leak when newly fitted and if there is one item that you don't have a spare of, or one that is impossible to get to, then that is the one that will give trouble. Well done for having sorted it out.
Painting: I've lost count how many times Danni has said she is going to finish the bedroom ceiling. A few times in this video alone.
Gearbox: I hope you manage to fix it without paying a king's ransom.
Didn't think about putting tiller all the way over to save the rudder! Will remember that.
Get another short button fender, stick a piece of stainless stud bar into the old one leave 150mm protruding, stick the new one on top, job’s a good’un. 👍
Yes we’ve seen that done! Even a tipcat fender underneath might be another option
Hehe! Until you mentioned train going past I just assumed that I'd forgotten to pause the Virtual Railfan YT live cam from a town near home which was open in another tab.
😂😂
We have our golden retriever on our boat for about half the year with no problems at all. OK it's not an Irish wolfhound but it's big enough!wish
Lovely breed of dogs!
I love how you just carry on when there are glitches (they happen to everyone!) and work your way through them. You are going to know every inch of your boat and that will come in very handy in the future. All the best from Missouri.
All part of the adventure! Thanks for your support!
One of your best vlogs thus far. Wide range of issues which you overcame so well 😁
Thanks for watching!
You could get a Newfoundland dog, they are enormous, but if you fall into the cut, they would jump in and save you. ( only joking, they can get humungous in size and would cost you an absolute fortune, foodwise ).
They are Danni’s dream breed!
Great progress guys, the end is in sight, which is a bit sad, this story unfolding has helped get me though the winter!
Thank you David! I’m sure there will be other protects in the horizon 😊
Do you intend to live on the boat full time, you are making it so nice, can't wait to see it all finished good luck xx
Yes this will be our ‘home’ so to speak, we’re still itching to get as much international travel under our belts as well though so this will be our base in the U.K. but might not always be here, watch this space!
Even new builds have teething/fettling issues. The rear fender could be resolved by adding another slightly smaller fender to the existing 1 (seen that done before many times). Bathroom ceiling looks great. Keep up the great work.
That’s a good idea, worth looking into!
So exciting watching you two find your way through the many problems you encounter on your project!
Thank you! The painful part is reliving them when editing the videos! 😂
Sometimes it does seem that every time you get things right the is a problem but you guys are doing so well the boat is so taking shape. Keep going I’m sure the finish will come soon
Thank you!!
Staring at the sun has been proven to make you some people sneeze 🤧
Learn something new everyday!
"A fairly simple day, he says." ;D
Haha yes 😂
Hi, love your channel, I live aboard with my Newfoundland Willow and we have plenty of room on our 47 foot Narrowboat.
Oh wow Danni’s dream dog is a Newfoundland 😍
Hi Dani and Joe, you must be so excited having running water. It's the thing I'm most grateful for. It won't be long till move in day🥳🥳 Hope you have a great week.
So excited now! Can’t wait for the weather to get on the change!
15:55 - Well golden spaniels (Otis) and springer spaniels (George) do okay on narrowboats.
Aw bless them!
Found you guy's by accident but what a great vlog well you got a new follower now a big thumb's up from me.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching
Photic sneeze reflex is a real thing! i have it too. It makes you sneeze when exposed to bright lights
Hadn’t heard of that before!
your two never cease to amaze me good work
Thanks Mac!!
Absolutely brilliant. You are so talented. You do everything. Decorating mechanics electrics plumbing omg. I struggle sawing a piece of wood lol. Brilliant. Well done to you both.
😂😂 thank you very much!
❤Thank you for sharing your creativity with us. I love your videos! Happy New Year 🎉.
Happy new year!
Kitchen area looking great 👍
Thank you!
Its so exciting to see it come together! Just a thought, but when I put solar on my tiny house, I was advised by the supplier to have an isolating switch between the pv panels and the charge controller. It was kind of like a mini consumer unit for a house with 2 60A trips as well as the switch.
That makes sense, we’ve gone for fuses in the panel cables and then an isolator switch before the MPPT controller
Good to see you both again
Bumping the bow into the wall made your gear box angry and he downed tools ouch !
Magic electrical engineering way above my intelligence
Boats have a will of their own and
can be tempremental at any time as I am sure your both learning
The life style is worth all the stress of a boat with attitude
Have a safe journey to your holiday mooring and a nice holiday in the USA
Keep safe warm dry and virus free.
Thank you! Yes they’ve all got their own characteristics for sure 😂
Super vid. But please introduce the kettle to the duster!
😋
Building site life 😂
Danni, Joe, what an amazing Vlog this week (as all weeks). So much work accomplished. You two are so talented. Is there nothing that Joe can't do, water, Gas, Electrics. Great to see Water and Gas on tap so-to-speak. Danni's painting is brilliant as are the door knobs we saw today. Your boat is looking amazing. Sorry you had gear-box issues. Take care and have a great week.
Thanks so much!
Someone on our marina jetty has a mastiff. Not getting much bigger than that. She is the happiest dog I know.
Love mastiff’s! That’s a good size dog that 😂
At last! a colour I would choose myself 😄 So good to see you two make progress - not long now.
😂😂 thank you!
Hi we have a Labrador a springer and iur two retired sheep dogs the boats 60’ and it’s no problem. Good luck with the water we replaced our pump last year and the pump manufacturer no longer recommends an accumulator tank works fine without the pump blips about 3 times in 24 hrs. 👍👍🖐 NB Fiddlesticks
Sounds like you have a boat full! Ahh ours is working well thankfully!
If you do shave a bit if the tube terminal off, just run a bit of solder around the exposed copper to maintain the tinning. A slight gap will not cause arcing as you will have a solid connection through the post with the nut.
Ahh okay! We’ve got a soldering iron so will make sure to do that!
Guys you have done a great job well done. If you are thinking of a dog I have had an alaskan malamute on board (from a previous partner) and to be honest all though a great dog to big for a Narrowboat. I now have a basenji a bread worth investigating can not bark cleans itself and doesn’t smell of damp dog. 👍👍
Aw bless them! Beautiful pups
The bigger the dog, the heavier the load of dog food you have to cart along knee deep muddy towpaths! I'd personally go for something small. I'd love another Jack Chi(t), but I worry about the impact of the freedom to go about life without the worry of leaving him/her. I've got a week in May dog sitting my daughters cockapoo joining me onboard, so that might change my perspective, one way or the other. Maybe bump into you on your journey east, I'm currently about 3 boats behind at Avoncliff, and heading East to hopefully get on the Thames by early summer. I love the long pound however, so it might take longer 🙂
Yes we are going to look after Joe’s parents dog soon on the boat to see how we get on! We just love bigger breeds. Aw great! Have to stop and say hi if you see us 😊
Well done guys, things are really starting to come together, especially when you start to get your creature comforts (running water) online. regarding the screw shortage, you can always hang both doors by leaving each hinges short of fixings. Also, no harm to drill your pilot hole in just one position, screw up the hinge and then when its in place, drill your other pilot holes and fix same. Anyway, great job and continued success to you both.
Thank you! Good tips. Got the other door hung today!
Excellent video don't get disheartened your all most there but I can feel the stress 😀👍👊
Thank you! Oh we hope so 😂
I know you'll be so happy when it's finished inside, do you have and plans for the exterior? Teething problems are always scary, I'm sure you'll get them sorted Joe.
Thanks Paul! Yes outside is getting done in the summer, British racing green and some black and white dazzle camo on both bulkheads we’re thinking!
Thanks for another great vlog! I have seen a Great Dane on a narrowboat. I have also seen a boat with five dogs on it. My personal preference would be a Jack Russell but that's only because I consider them to be the world's greatest dog breed.
Oh wow! Don’t come much bigger than a Great Dane!
Hi guys….just a quick tip for turning……as you turned the boat just run the bow into the bank nice and steady….sometimes a blip in reverse to slow he’r down…..as you slowly hit the bank….put your rudder full over to the right with the boat just above tick over…..the boat will act as a fulcrum and slowly turn. After the boat has turned over half way just a run in reverse keep the rudder over to the right then bring her back slowly….then back into foreword and you will find you’ve turned…. That way keeps your stern / rudder away from the bank. Another thing when moving from forward into reverse always go from forward into neutral for a while then into reverse……slamming straight through forward to reverse plays havoc and damages your gearbox…..hope you don’t mind me giving you a bit of advice
Ahhhh that makes better sense! Use it to pivot. Next time! 😂
@@DanniandJoe you won’t go thumping your rudder…..I’ve learnt to do that when I trained for my skippers papers for the Chesterfield Canal trust narrow boat cruises
We take our German Shepard on board and it’s fine
Awww we love seeing dogs aboard!
Nice to hear you're coming to America. What are you going to do when you come? There are plenty of fun things to do and no shortage of suggestions surely. Reach out if you get to Oregon. I'll show you some big trees and take you agate hunting.
We’re flying out to Miami, Road trip up to New Orleans and then up to Chicago to start Route 66, bit of California and then home, will let you know if we manage to head further north or Oregon it looks beautiful! Maybe another trip!
More to the previous comment, you may be able to use your existing cables by rotating every second bat by 180degrees. Always use a multi meter to check your voltages and also handy for fault finding as well. If you doubt my reasoning check with an auto elec trician, another tip is when connecting to the system between batteries and the power board connect the positive to the first battery and the negative to the last battery. The reasoning with this is when using high current draw power is taken off the first battery it goes down quicker if connections are both on the first battery. Check with the guy on cruising the cut. For his thoughts. All ways use multi core copper wire when doing things.
You guys have done a fantastic job so far !
Cheers for now.
Thank you, yes we're getting more familiar with a multimeter, what a handy tool!
Don't know if you have a dog yet, but the standard that I use is "How Much Dog Crap Do You Want To Clean Up?"
😂
Running water and gas , good progress, keep at it you two, 😁👍
Thank you !
Just got my gearbox fixed now so u don't need to stress if u need a tow just drop me a tex and we're sort it out some how I'm moored up in Semington at the moment
We have got a second hand one which has arrived, once we’re in the marina it will be much easier for sure
With reference to getting a dog - and the question about a 'big dog' being okay - can I suggest that you just enjoy some time cruising, just the two of you, for a while before seriously considering a dog. Teething troubles will continue and there will always be something more to do - the reality of owning a boat I'm afraid - so don't pile on added pressure by adding a dog to the mix for a while. Some permanent cruisers have dogs but we only ever see the success stories on UA-cam; because not all dogs settle for a nautical life! Also, what is your definition of a big dog? Remember the size of your new home and the efforts you have both put it to making it look good and then imagine the reality of a large muddy dog who has rolled over on the rain-soaked towpath clambouring down into your nice clean kitchen/lounge/bedroom??!! Have a fantastic time in America.
Thank you! Yes not something we’d rush into, Joe’s had dogs his whole life and it’s something we want, although we want to travel more before we make such a commitment. We’ll be rescuing whatever dog we decide on too
There are two ways to look on a issue;
#1 Problems are there to find a solution
#2 Problems are there to give up
I guess you two find life quite fun after all
Very well put Rolf! Learning to keep a similar mindset even when stressed, try to enjoy the learning process
good vid on your channel thanks lee
Thank you!
I understand the giant breeds actually are less active than the smaller ones. tire faster I had a saint Bernard and she would run around the yard a couple times and in for the day, however they would take up a lot of space inside. And they have shorter life spans.
Check to see if im correct.
Yes you’re correct! We just love them, so cuddly and bear like 😊
You guys look a bit frazzled. You’ll be ok. Save a little time for each other.
When you are up to your bum in alligators-remember you’re there to drain the swamp!
Yes. In fact looking at a bright light when you know you have to sneeze but can’t is a life hack to get the sneeze done with.
We’re counting down the days to move aboard now and then head off on our big American adventure 😊
Nice Aldi trollies ;)
Go well with those slippers🤣😂
Can’t beat the value! (Slippers are complimentary hotel numbers!)
Nice
Thank you!
Looking great! And yes, when my daughter gets sunlight in her eyes it makes her sneeze too. It's not common, but not uncommon either. If that makes sense. I'm sure I read somewhere about 30% of population get it. Daughter has always had Rhinitis since young though, not sure if that makes any difference. x
Ahh thank you!
It's called photic sneezing
@@emmageear6265 Good to know thanks x
Your vlogs are awfully good value for money. Where can I get some Aldi Undies?
Aldi’s website believe it or not, about the comfiest I’ve ever worn!
i have seen a narrowboat with five alsatian dogs living aboard
Oh wow!
@@DanniandJoe also one of the boats at Brinklow had a couple of newfoundlands but they had a bit of land with their mooring
@@wheelie2012 absolutely love Newfoundland’s
Love the knobs for your cupboards! Any luck finding an ugly duckling for me to turn into a swan :) x
Haven’t seen anything local recently! When are you due back of the UK?
@@DanniandJoe End of April. Have a fabulous week!
hi guys, have you got extractor fans anywhere?
No they don’t seem common on boats, we have good ventilation from the roof vents alongside the draft from the single pane glass windows and gaps in the doors
Joe- wondering what you do for a living as you seem to know how to do everything with gas and electrics. I wouldn't have a clue regarding my batteries!
Just been in the timber industry really but love learning a little bit about everything, just enough to get by! This has been right on the limit of my abilities and have been learning through the whole project. Would recommend starting to learn the basics one thing at a time, check out Explorist Life on here, he’s done a step by step install and it’s easy enough to follow and the videos are really well made
If you are planning on travelling would it be wise to get a pet, a dog in particular.
You are a nurse and work away a lot, so please think long and hard about it please. As they are for life. Love you both and your trials and tribulations that you work through together.
Oh definitely. It’s not something that will likely happen until we’re more settled after travelling, or we would trial the dog staying away in a camper van and travel that way. It’ll be a rescue that we go for. Thank you!
Dani in answer to your question about size of dog on a narrow boat ve seen alsations and labradors on canal boats
Awww!
You should be aware that battery terminals are usually tapered and you'll not get proper contact between the battery terminal and the lug if fitted upside down.
They are not suggesting fitting the battery terminals upside down. Only the crimp terminals which is perfectly acceptable.
Thanks yes just the crimps upside down to allow them to pivot properly
Look at the Minimal List’s Channel. They have a medium size dog on a narrow boat.
Thank you!
Are you going to live full time on your boat?
That’s the plan!
Wot No cling film in the paint tray.
Forgot it again! 😂
Hi Jo Danny, not your day m8 hit the bow then knock your rudder of then blow your gearbox up what a day but all fixable I hope ,nice to see water coming out the taps you are getting there it’s coming on fast now , Jo you are doing a great job painting my dear did you pick the colours done a good job who ever picked it ,so what gone wrong with the gearbox this time surely it must be under warranty, right guys till next time take care keep safe and be good 😊 lol 😝🙏👀🌹🌹🦋🇬🇧🦮🤠👍🥰🥳
Thanks John! What a week 😂
dogs, i used to breed and show dogs so i know dogs, big giant breeds like st bernards are probably a bit too big - they might accidentally knock you overboard with their tails but on the other hand they tend to be lazy, you will know when you meet the right dog, personally i would go for a spaniel, probably a cavalier king charles spaniel, but check the rescues.
We love the personalities of bigger breeds, we would love to rescue!
I would think long and hard before getting a dog. They need regular exercise as well as companionship and with you working long hours it might not be ideal.
Joe is working full time on the boat so would be around and Danni is only working this much at the moment before our trip to America 😊 but yes lots to consider before committing
Hi Danni, Gordon from Australia.
Just watched your last bloc, in a pinion your battery wiring is wrong. My reasoning is that you have wired in parallel which means that you by connecting all the negatives together and the positives the same (parallel wiring) , you will have 12 volts multiplied by the number of batteries if batteries total 72 volts. A catastrophic event could be the end result. Your batteries need to be connected positive to negative to have 12 volts dc
Hi thanks for watching! Positive to Positive & Negative to Negative is parallel and parallel means keeping the voltage the same but increasing capacity (amp hours). Think of jump starting a car, you go from + to + and - to - keeping the 12 volts (not 24)
👍👌🇨🇦❤
Thank you!
I've seen labs living on a boat.
They are lovely dogs!
