Carson, I lived in Texas in 1977. There I saw my first armadillo. It was probably five years later that I saw my first roadkill armadillo in S/WMO. That was down around Pineville.
By 1986 I had only seen a couple of them right around here… and none of them were live. That summer, we bought Sassafras Valley. I had also acquired a Farmall A with a belt driven belly brush mower.
The property was heavily wooded and you couldn’t enter it from the road. So, I got started trying to clear a place to put the driveway. Blackberry briars were 15’ tall. There were catbriars, wild raspberries, buck brush, poison ivy vines, ragweed… you name it… it was there. The temp was in the 90’s… and I was covered from head to toe to ward off the briars and poison ivy.
By noon, I was miserable and started to mow into the cooler valley. Just as I got to the bottom, I felt a huge thump. The mower bounced below my feet and a huge splash of red flushed out of it… like someone had thrown a bucket of barn paint into the blade.
At first, I thought I’d hit a groundhog so I pounded the clutch and the brake simultaneously. I turned off for the PTO and backed up. That is when I saw my first live armadillo. But, it was to be a fleeting glimpse… by the time I got off the tractor to take a closer look, it had expired.
I had hit limbs, logs, rocks and stumps with that belly mower. None of them had knocked the belts off. But, that armadillo popped them off like a cartoon stepping on a banana peel!
The lesson for me - armadillos are tough. Don’t use your mower to make them into sausage!
I enjoyed your video. The comparison in mowers was stark!!!

Luckily I've never hit any animals while mowing. Usually they get scared off before I'm too close!

This is a great video for me. I've got a 2013 T650 and would like to have a brush cutter for it. I'd prefer a flail mower if they wasn't so expensive. I've also been looking at an articulating brush cutter. I've got area's that being able to turn the brush cutter sideways would be very helpful. Now it's hard to justify buying much of anything. I just bought a Kubota 3901 last year and am using it with heavy duty 6' Bush Hog brush cutter and a Rhino TM84 finish mower. I don't really have any complaints with them.

In my experience Takeuchi skids outperform and outlast bobcat and John deere.
I've been renting a takeuchi TL8 for mowing fields and blackberries and brush in the PNW and it has NEVER overheated and NEVER had a mechanical failure. Cannot say the same about bobcat or John deere.

I had that same setup years ago with the brushcat it was decent. I moved to a flail mower and never looked back.

I’ve heard flail mowers are pretty sweet! I’ve never used one.

Rule of the thumb. Before cutting the grass, sharpen the blade of the lawn mower first.

That retention pond is FAR from flat ground. Maybe everywhere else but there were definitely some sloped areas and ditches. Plus I don’t have a tractor. So use what ya got!
