Ugghh...giardia. You've had quite the bingo card full of challenges so far, but keep crushing miles. Looking forward to hearing your perspective on Rocksylvania once you hit the rockier part of the state. Have a great hike!
Pretty sure those three flip-flop thru-hikers at 4:21 are how I found your channel. One of them is a blogger on "The Trek" and mentioned they met a young 2024 Triple Crown aspirant with a YT channel called Jaru Hikes (they were almost right). I searched for Jaru, and found you, subscribed and started watching back from when you were at Springer and am still following along! Hike (or walk) on!
Nice, they were super cool. And one of them got my channel name so that was probably them. It has been remarkable how literally every thru-hiker I’ve met this year is chill and cool.
North of Eckville there are more and more rocks. There are sections where you just can't place your feet flat because of all the rocks and it's a whole new tired and sore feet at the end of the day. When I crossed into NJ, I guess I thought the rocks would magically disappear and remember cursing them. Bottom line though, all of the AT is rocky 😂 Lil'MAK '08
Hello from NE OH! I just came across this video and your channel. After a few minutes watching, I subscribed and liked! 😊 I have been very interested in this years' AT hikers experiences, and am following a few other hikers. I just added you to my daily UA-cam notifications 😉 Great video! I will pray for your safety and comfort during your journey❤
I like how you think about people and understand that each of us is different. I meet so many hikers and this is the 1st year im actuality following a few on UA-cam. Peak hiker season usually happens around July for my area so its cool to see the "early birds". How did you like NJ?
I like your narrative. When answering questions, I often try to give an answer that individual can understand in their own terms also by using example of what I mean. From that hopefully the person can understand my answer in their own way and decide from there. Follow up questions are usually great because it fills out the vision 😅m trying to create. Confusing as mud; but I know what IM saying; sometimes, maybe not, maybe just a little. Ah forget it,…..😅
Any step to think about the conversation from a third person perspective is a big step in the right direction as far as I am concerned. And as long as you know what you are saying, that matters most haha
So do you know how you got sick? Did u just not use the filter or did it fail? Do you know what caused the failure? I'm brand new to backpacking and about to take my first trip. Clean water is my biggest anxiety. The few hikers I follow all seem to have different methods and opinions, but none talk about it in detail. Could you touch on this in a future video to educate the newbies? Loving your videos, thanks for the education and inspiration. You may just turn this camper into a hiker😜
Yes, it was because I drank untreated water (no filter and no chemical, because I was in a hurry). If you filter your water (sawyer squeeze recommended) or you chemically treat (aqua mira) then you will not get sick from a water born illness. You would still be at risk for (and more likely to get) norovirus which is transmitted by human contact or surfaces. I will maybe touch on that in next weeks video since Giardia seriously nailed me next week,
Jeez, Jaru, you should know better than to NOT filter your water!! Especially because you have limited time. Not enough time? I hope you’ll feel better soon. please don’t sabotage your goal/dream!
Giardia is not in any way comparable to walking into -50 Fahrenheit in 3 feet of snow up 2 miles of 10 foot boulders in Maine in January. One slows you down, the other kills you. I chemically treated all of my water, but I ran out and wasn’t able to resupply on trail. You’re making a lot of false assumptions here. Might be better to ask questions next time.
For the most part PA is reasonably easy, the rocks comes in waves like fields sometimes their big and small, the worst ones are the Sharp pointe ones that sticks up and when you step on them it hurts, I thought PA was a blast, you will understand the nickname when you get to,DWG and your feet is going to be hurting so enjoy the ride bro
‘Like waves’….this is probably the best analogy of the rocks in PA! And I think that contributes to the frustration hikers feel. The moment you hit a rock free section and pick up your pace, you hit the next boulder field or patch of trail legos and you’re forced to once again slow down.
The rocks did get worse further north, but the rocksylvania characterization was still overblown. Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee were many orders of magnitude harder.
S. Pennsylvania was easy for everyone, it statistically has the least elevation change of any section on the AT. Plus after 1000 miles your legs are at thier prime shape so crushing miles in Pennsylvania is easy. That doesnt mean it cant have a nickname because N. Pennsylvania WAS rocky (hiking north out of Lehigh gap is by far harder then anything in Georgia or Tennessee)
To be clear, Pennsylvania is absolutely rocky. But my point in the video is that it is ironic that the only state with an intimidating nickname on the AT is the easiest state on the entire trail.
At 19 minutes in wondering if you will get to the rocks in this video or next. Now I know you didn't watch AT videos before your hike. I have had giardia. Bloody awfull is what it is. Stinking.

That’s cool you got to see inside the cabin. I remember hiking by there in 21 and wondered what it was like. Thanks for sharing.
Your running commentary cracks me up. You have the BEST AT videos!
@FawnGermerAuthor, I found your website and read your bio. You are an amazing badass adventurer yourself! Cheers from metro Atlanta.

Good update an observation/analysis of the terrain and architecture you have seen on your trek. It was entertaining and interesting.
KEEP ON KEEPING ON 😊

NJ and NY have best views and wildlife so far, Smokies in TN also great.

As always Loving the videos
Pine Grove is a great place!! The museum is really neat! I assume you passed Waynesboro PA long ago.
Yes
Cruised right by my home!!! Happy hiking!
I know you said the color of your shoes doesn’t really matter but at least you got to show them off during the creek crossing 😂

@@MoniqueDiCarloI remember on his sobo attempt he stated he was going to switch to nobo because he is not a reckless hiker.

Reminder: Drink More Water
That goes for everyone reading this.
wierd hearing those ghostly rifle volleys at the mason dixon line
The rocks will get a lot worse further north. Good luck.
Once you pass the 501 shelter the rocks will slow you down.
The rocks did get worse further north, but the rocksylvania characterization was still overblown. Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee were many orders of magnitude harder.
The rocks gets a lot worse from port Clinton north on into NJ so no the Nick name is not over blown, also their is some hard climbs .
