I love Larkin Poe, been a fan since the summer of 2015, and this song is a particular favourite, as it touches a chord with me, having lost my dad to dementia in 2016.
I have been a fan for a few years now, and finally got to see them early this year, at the Fillmore in SF. I too was initially drawn to Rebecca, but as I listened, watched, and finally saw with my own eyes; it's Megan that I can't take my eyes and ears off of on the stage. She is a master of that lap steel.
this song literally brings me to tears this is such an extremely powerful yet so sensitive song - and this slide guitar at the beginnig... *speechless*
Mahalo again to James Pratt!! I've joined Miki's Patreon and have asked her to review the Nu Deco version of MAAH. RebL's voice has matured since this performance.
The lyrics are actually a reference to Alice in Wonderland, the mad Hatter, painting the roses red, off with the head and do so on. That's really cool cause Alice in Wonderland is really insane. And I think Megan is not using an e-bow. It's her usual bar/slide in her left hand, on her right hand are just the picks. I think she uses a volume pedal to create these swells, and maybe a bit of reverb (not an expert on guitar pedals). She is not using an awful lot of effects. I guess with this one you are done with this performance. But this is definitely the highlight maybe the best version of this song on UA-cam. The Nu Deco version is good, Rebecca's vocal part is slightly better in my opinion, but the instrumental part in this version is refreshingly simple and raw. There are so many reactions on this video and some are so emotional. Lots of people come just for the music, then you see their faces change usually between the spoken intro and the "one fourth of his blood is mine" line. There where some that I had to stop watching because the stories the reactors told were so sad. It's actually a good thing cause it's the ultimate proof how great this song is. Its a bit like the song bypasses the brain and goes straight from the ears to the heart.
@DrS - spot on! MAAH has touched so many people all around the world. I'm not sure what an e-bow is but that is all Megan with a few effects. But Miki has barely started down this rabbit hole so it's understandable she doesn't know the musical proficiency of these two artists! All in good time!
@@genboyer an e-bow is an electric device that you can use with an electric guitar to kinda mimic the sound of an instrument played with a bow (violin, cello and the like), it just makes the strings vibrate constantly, infinite sustain if you want. Guitar players, please, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways, you can see in the video that she only has her three picks (thumbs, index and middel finger) and the tone bar that's just a massive block of steel.
@@dr.s. Thank you for that bit of info. I've been following Larkin Poe since 2017, and belong to their Kinsiders group. So I am very familiar with their guitars and most of their gear. Mahalo!😊
And the expression "mad as a hatter", came from the fact that hatters used a lot of heavy metals like lead when they were giving the form to the hat that they produced... after a lot of years working, they were poisoned by the toxicity of these metals (used in the molds) and they had neurological issues like mental insanity.
I have a sister who suffers from mental illness. It's like it's not even my sister. It's just a shell of her but someone on the inside I don't even know. How did this happen? Idk . She's been like this for 15 years. My parents have had her son since he was 2 . He's 17 now. He don't even know his mother. It's sad!!!!! Your song really touched home.😢😢😢😢
Hi Michal! That was a GREAT reaction. I've really gotten into Larkin Poe the past year and I'm actually attending my 1st concert with them later this month in New York! Lastly, I'd like to request that you please listen to 19-year old Courtney Hadwin. Her cover of "Hard To Handle", which she performed at her America's Got Talent audition 5-years ago, her cover of "Sign Of The Times" and her original she just released a few months ago, "That Girl Don't Live Here". THANK YOU!
You will have a blast. I took my Granddaughters to see them 2 years ago when they came through Louisville. Their first concert at 10 and 7 respectively.
Thanks for diving deep into the meaning of mad as a hatter. I've always known it... because I played with mercury like playdoe as a kid. Rebecca wrote this song when she was just 17 and concerned that schizophrenia skips a generation. I think Rebs is a hot-mess and a genius (I mean this in the best of ways). She was born a day after me... just 30 years later... but who's counting? (both of us Aquarius... go figger). Megan... there is no overstating her value. Perfect harmony and inspirational interpretations on the slide. Here is another version with a full orchestra. I would have given up a kidney to be here at this show. RebL goes entirely off the rails with her vocal fills. OMG... mind blowing performance... have a few tissues ready. ua-cam.com/video/Xn0kknnsmV4/v-deo.html
Did you know that they are related to Edgar Allan Poe? I believe it may have been their great grandfather who was a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe. I am not sure of the exact relation, but it was something like that and their band name is named after their grandfather, I believe. I could be totally wrong on the specifics but it's something like that.
Please! Never shut up Mee-chall! I am hear for your thoughts about music. I have shown these Larkin Poe videos to two other "reaction" channels, they never even got close but you,WOW!
Actually, Megan is just as articulate as Rebecca. But, I see why you got the feeling that she's less comfortable speaking in public. I think so, too. I've watched a few interviews with them, and Megan certainly contributes her insights and opinions in a sweet, but forceful, way. Sisters, but clearly each her own person.
Very interesting point on your fear of losing your mental strength more over physical strength. But if you are losing your mind keep in mind that the last 40 years have proven that you can always become POTUS☺.

“Id rather be a brain in a jar.”
😂 that is a great way to put that feeling.
I've always loved these ladies...

What a fantastic song this is!
The lyrics in this song are so raw and authentic. Hauntingly powerful. I break up every time.

A couple named VinandSori had an amazing reaction to this song, especially Vin.
This is what I call "tear producing authenticy" . Esp.: "Don't come for me! I promise I'll be great".
I have been following them for awhile. They are really really good and very good live, They are also relented to Edger Allen Poe.
You have great analysis, Im not into vocals but as a guitarist, I think you add a great analysis coming from a more vocal perspective!!

Megan mostly sings harmony, but her lead voice is in her hands. Lyrical is a very good word for how she plays that slide.

For the record... I gave the sisters a 1943 edition of Alice In Wonderland a few months ago in Boston

@VinceEvanko - yes you are correct. I believe it's their 5th great grandfather Larkin Haskew Poe who was a distant cousin of Edgar.
