Since the 1st time I heard this song around 1987 I think, two things captured me immediately, the repetitive and nostalgic piano sound and definitely the voice of Penny Heathcote, a unique voice, full of melancholy, innocence and magic, which never ceases to move me, this is one of the songs that I never stopped hearing even after almost 33 years.
Cast your eyes towards the east or west And watch for lines above your head "Can't say it worries me now" he said, "For it may never come". But I see direct lines, See direct lines across the sky. And I see direct lines, See direct lines across the sky. Laws won't help you now No voice, no rights No governing body Women and children first And each man for himself. But I see direct lines See direct lines across the sky...
Excellent, song . Heyy: Payne reformed the band in 2015 under 'Electronic Circus' (dropping 'The') with Paul Johnson Rogers and Mike Stewart as instrumentalists and co-writers. They issued a completely new version of 'Direct Lines' in 2016.
What ever happened to Penny Heathcote who was a member of the short-lived group and sang the vocals ? I'm guessing she gave up her dream early on. If so, that's sad. She had a very unique voice. So many gifted musicians give up when the mainstream music industry ignores them.
For some people it's not an obsession, they make a record then our content. Get married and have kids and what not. It's very selfish. We're sitting here waiting for more music. I'm not kidding.
Sou apaixonada nessa música e pelo o que sei essa é a original e tiveram alguma releituras mas de fato essa é a melhor versão. Alguém pode dizer o que ocorreu com a banda? Não conheço muito.
Of all the music made from 1950s-1990 about nuclear war, this has always hit the mark so poignantly. It oozes allegory and still makes me aflutter of dreaming of sitting with my lover alone on a picnic in an idyllic Edinburgh park, pausing to watch SS-17s and Polaris nuclear missiles crossing paths above, shrugging it off and returning to our wine. (Yes, I know ICBMs cross unseen in space, but its my dream, dammit.)
I spend years of my life in search of this small EP till i finally found it. Well, nowadays there exist a re-issue with its original Cover which is nice for people who want it.
@@TheZoltanX Sad how they just faded into obscurity, Penny Heathcote I think the singers name was? Well anyways, she was great and had an amazing voice but then she completely dissapeared. Hope she's doing well now

You did something to this other than slowing it down and changed the pitched slightly. I really dig it.
This is the original, at the correct speed.
@@marco4566 But it was released on a single, it's _supposed_ to be played at 45.
Not bad. Pretty nice!

i have the original record and it's just the audio in this video that has been slightly slowed down, i think i prefer it this way though :)
this is slowed down and sounds more scratchy
