What I love about Martin's writing is that he provides hints to multiple possibilities (as pointed out in this video) but confirms none of them as Canon. This invites the reader to participate with their own imagination and create their own head Canon and explore multiple possibilities. All the best books, shows and movies I've ever consumed do this. It's the "show don't tell " style of storytelling that I love
It honestly just sounds like lazy writing: he couldn't commit to a single good story so he left it vague so he can change it later if it becomes important. George RR Martin has said something similar himself: laying seeds for the future so he can reap them when it becomes neccesary. He's often stated that he does this because he's not as good of a writer as, for example, Tolkien who had everything figured out from the start.
@unematrix no he's argued there are two different types of writers the "architect" who has everything meticulously figured out from the start and the "gardeners" who start by planting seeds of ideas but allow those seeds to grow organically . The gardener types allow their characters and situations to take on a life of their own and change and grow as the story itself takes on a less rigid more organic life of its own. I don't believe he makes a value judgment as to which style is superior just that they're different. Personally I prefer the gardener approach far more as, again, everything seems more natural and has an essence to it that feels real.
The reason they have four limbs instead of six is because George RR Martin said that in real life there is no liveing flying animals with four legs and wings and it would be more accurate
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 dumbdude doesn't understand "mr genius author" creates the lore for his own world. Him calling them dragons in the world he created is what makes them dragons
I think you nailed it there. I thought of it as well if you put together that Laena Velaryon's egg (daughter of Alyn Velaryon and Baela Targaryen) hatched a wingless and blind white wyrm that inmediatly went for Laenas life as if the thing hated her from birth. It suits the description of Firewyrms being blind creatures but with deep hate for humans. Another case could be Caraxes (Daemon's dragon) recorded deformation as he is describe having a sinewy long neck and rare deformities that gave the dragon an appearance of a wyrm more than a dragon, and his viciousness only helped to solidify his moniker as the Blood wyrm.
@@Ritzieya wyrm in fantasy is usually a fire breathing serpentine of some sort they are in other things besides asoiaf and and the term wyrm comes from the old Norse way of saying dragon I can’t remember what exactly the word was
I think the Empire of the Dawn had dragons too, and just like in real life when an empire falls knowledge is lost. Stories and myths survived through time and this prompted Valyrians to "bring back dragons". Like we're trying to do with Mammoths for example.
This is an idea I never thoughts of before. Dragons being chimeras between Wyverns and Firewyrms is a fantastic idea that can help explain a LOT of things for the GoT universe. As I imagine if Dragons were a naturally-evolved race, with all the abilities they have as depicted in the series from the get-go, chances are a lot of the Human Civilizations we see in the modern era of Essos and Westeros would never have had the time to develop like they did. As Dragons would've dominated the world in a similar manner to how Dinosaurs did in our world's pre-historic era. They'd have WAY to many advantages for early Humans to be able to overcome. Thus Dragons being blood magic hybrids created by a civilization as advanced as Valyia just works.
youre assuming you know what a dragon does migration-ally, it can easily chill and stay in one part of the world. If you go off lore of Dragons they love ash, so they would just burn down a area and stay there. A bigger plot hole is theres nothing to feed these animals to get them to the sizes they are.
@@kool4209 odds are that if dragons were a regular species, they would 1) have to migrate as they keep depleting areas of animals as they eat anything with meat 2) be extremely territorial, and have large territories at that, as they can fly many long distances
I think the Asshaii legend will be true since the description fits with the Children of the Forest. They are an elder race, men can't pronounce their names and, in TWOIAF, when they mentioned their arts they say that the Valyrian would then master the same thing (obsidian, glass candle that can contact people in their dreams and see events at long distance just like the greenseers), taming animals and of course, a magical steel made with blood sacrifice: dragonsteel (the Last Hero tale). The Long Night ended with a secret song, the Singers (true name of the Children) taught the Valyrian their arts so could they be the song of fire, to balance their first creation, the song of ice, the Others. The rise of Valyria happened when "Westeros was recovering from the Long Night" which means they got their dragons around the end of the Long Night.
Maybe the reason theres bones found all over the world is because the shadow people gene spliced dragons in the dawn age. Then Taught the Valyrians how to do it in preparation for the return of the white walkers.
my personal theory is there was dragons in the past and the people from the shadow really ride them but somehow they got extinct, the valyrians tried to recreate the dragons with blood magic fusing wyverns and firewyrms and then fused those beasts to their blood
The theory has one pretty big problem. The torture of prisoners happened when they already had their empire, which they conquered with dragons. Also, why would anyone give prisoners the ability to bond with your new super weapon.
the valyrians conquered gogossos in the third war against ghis, only in the last one did they release the dragons and end the empire for good. This all took ages to happen so they had plenty of time between wars to do their experiments.
Using dragons to conquer doesn't necessarily mean they were riding them. Possibly the taming and riding came later as a way to ensure control over their greatest weapons, and prevent them from being used against them in rebellion. The slave breeding probably happened without knowledge that such a bond could exist in the first place. Magic is weird, and what connects what can be pretty random at times.
What if the bones of ancient dragons were the inspiration for the chimera dragons? Perhaps the ancient dragons were the typical 6-appendaged fire-breathing reptiles, but they went extinct. Their surviving wyvern cousins were then used to “bring back” the legendary beasts in a similar way that we might. (theoretically) use the modern elephant to “resurrect” the woolly mammoth.
They are blood bound to a family lineage, hence why even in Valyria the main 14 great families still practiced incest, which was probably due to keeping dragons loyal to a certain bloodline via blood sacrifice. Thus certain dragons were bound to certain bloodlines. By the time of HotD, all dragons in westross are blood-blound to thr Targaryen bloodline. Hence after all the dragons die out, Dany performs a new blood sacrifice ritual to both hatch and bind her three new dragons to her blood line.
@@paulliston8561 She didn't bind them to her bloodline, they just... imprint on her, and she had Valyrian blood. Even if what you say is true, they came from the Targaryen dragons regardless

Why not both a natural occurring species and a created one? Think like wolves and dogs... Dogs are technically still wolves, but wolves are not dogs. The locations of wild dragons were likely left alone, protected at a distance, with raids launched for eggs 🥚 to take back to the free hold, and begin the specialization process. They were likely breed for size, tameablity, ferocity, color, and even shape. From there, you cross certain samples with your fire wyrms and wyverns to get other characteristics, like stronger wings, stronger fire breath... etc. It might even have been a right of passage of a Royal Valerian House, to have their own breeding, taming, and modification methods and practices.
Yes exactly. They certainly started with wild creatures. Except it wasn't the Valerians. The history they present is ... incomplete. Either by accident or by design. Dragons originally came from Asshai by the Shadow. Asshai is the most mysterious place in Planetos as so few go there. Only Ghost grass grows there. It's an ENORMOUS city, large enough for Old Town, Lannisport AND Kings Landing to all fit within its walls, with room to spare. Sounds like what was a city of millions not just 100's of 1000's. And fused stone everywhere. Like what we see at Dragonstone, like Volantis, the base layers of the Hightower, and like Storm's end (i think). The very air itself is poisoned. One does not simply sail to Asshai... oops. Nope you totally can, it's just dangerous. Nor MORDOR dangerous, but more like Chernobyl dangerous. The river runs purple or green or something weird. Drinking its waters is death. it's only fish are pale white and blind (sound familiar?). The city is thinly populated, mostly by warlocks, sorcerers and the like. "At night, light can be seen in only one window in ten." Asshai and/or The Empire of the Dawn made dragons. It is known. It almost seems like Shadowland is like Chernobyl and Asshai is like Pripyat. Valeria was probably a colony of The Great Empire of the Dawn. And when Great Empire fell, a new one succeeded it- like Rome succeeded Hellenic Greece. What I love most is that Asshai (the furthest east that is mapped) probably made it to Westeros. What's west of Westeros? Esos. Fused stone can only be made by dragon flame. Fused stone like the base of the Hightower's High Tower (legend has it the founder of house Hightower slew a dragon to win the keep on Battle Isle, where they built a massive tower atop the existing, fused black stone keep). Fused, black, oily stone exists i think at Storm's End. The throne at Nagga's bones in the Iron Island was old when men first reached the iron islands, back when the Starks were still just one of a dozen petty kings in the North. But, House Dayne is clearly Valyrian in looks and deeds. Their foundational myth is that they followed a meteor to a new land, then built their keep where it landed and made the sword Dawn from its content. Dawn: the first (or perhaps) prototypical Valyrian Steel sword. House Dayne is as old in Westeros as House Stark. They don't appear to be First Men, though. So, where'd come from? They came from Esos via the Sunset Sea. Perhaps as Bannermen to the Hightowers. House Dayne is a direct reference to marvel character Dane who becomes the Black Knight in Marvel comics. He's a descendent if Arther Pendragon himself and he wields a powerful sword like his ancestor did. The sword consumes him tho. Pendragon literally means "the dragon's head" Some believe taking a sword from a stone refers to how humans FIRST made real steel. We did so in small batches bc it was made from meteorite fragments which did not require the complicated and labor intense practice of mining, refining iron, adding carbon, smelting with charcoal which also needs must be made first, which is itself a complex endeavor. King Tut had a small steel dagger made of meteorite steel. To bronze age people, a meteor would appear like a special stone
@burtan2000 only it's not "fused stone" they specifically differentiate that from the oily greasy black stones Asshai is made of ,like Yeen or Toad island and the throne in the iron islands. It's a completely different stone work as it is described completely different and planetos may be 3 times bigger then earth said GRRM imo
Hypothetically, it could be all 3. With the shadow people and Valerions finding dragonlike creatures, messing with them with blood magic then simply discarding/setting loose inferior offspring and their eggs into the world. This seems to be intentional, to leave the reader to see the probability coheesively through the 3 points, but leaves it open for interpretation.
I think it won´t ever be explicitly stated where they came from because Martin seems to get off on making people confused, he intentionally gives 2-3 different origin stories that all make sense in their own right and slaps "it was written by inworld maesters so it´s not to be completely trusted". The mystery is completely intentional, obviously I didnt figure out anything new. Imo if the Others are naturally occuring beings from the far north, it´d make sense that dragons are also naturally occuring, it gives balance to the world
Yeah, you are probably right. It is a bit of a cop out. GRRM thinks of multiple cool ideas and branching pathways, but can't pick between them, giving us uncertainty in a lot of aspects in the series. Then again, the uncertainty makes for a thriving theory crafting community.
I definitely think that dragons were created by ancient valerians. However, I also believe that some of them, in many forms, could have gone away from the Realms of men and together, bred more dragons than the valerians knew about. I also believe that some, or many of the dragons may have not been the final result that the valerians were looking for. That could have resulted in the fire or water dragons, or maybe some other dragons that we haven't even heard of yet! P. S. I love your content, it always keeps me interested and your voice/accent makes it that much better. Thank you
The mystery of the shadow people leaves a lot open too. Not conquered by Valeria and known for ancient magic. Couldve had many different opinions of how to stop the ghost grass. Leading them to create different beasts among different cultures, creating the "failed" experiment of the ice dragons. But yeah the dragon babies seem to sum it up for me.
There’s a video somewhere on UA-cam that theorizes about an Empire of the Dawn with its capital of Asshai millennia before the freehold rose up from shepherds. Also it would be interesting if the Valyrians were aware of natural dragons (such as the ones in the north or other types of dragons) but they were too small or hard to catch so they made their own terrifying hybrids
Your channel is awesome man. The quality is really up there with channels with millions of subscribers, and is one of the best channels out there for asioaf lore.
Asshai was an empire of the dawn. They created dragons and bonded with them. Their power grew too great and a magical calamity took place blasting the peninsula and causing it to be a cursed land . The magical power vacuum released the whyte walkers within a few centuries of the devastation and nearly ended the world and all that was left was a western outpost called Valyria. Over time it grew into a great power through their bond with dragons and magic. They grew too powerful and a great calamity (the Doom) took place leaving only a western outpost called Dragonstone. The magical power vacuum has once again released the Whyte walkers.
The Children of the forest created white walkers. Although one thing that does confuse me is why is there always a magical calmaity whenever a powerful magical nation arises int he song of ice and fire for example we know that the original facelss men brought about the doom of Valryia which makes me wonder if there were a similar group that destroyed the empire of the dawn.
Then Westeros a small group survived with dragons but had a civil war lost their dragons then a couple centuries lost the throne and another civil war broke out a sorcerer pirate king attacked the central place of learning of the land and a calamity happened old powers woke and a winter without end happened this time their was no we’re to go
The Children of the Forest didn't create the White Walkers in the books. That was a series thing and if it will happen in the books we don't know. When asked whether there was a closer relationship between the Others and the children of the forest than there thus far has seemed to be, Martin replied that it was possible, and that the topic would be explored later on in the story. This is the only thing we know about from George.
I think it was stated that the valyrians were able to create their empire because of the dragons in the first place, how would they be able to create such a vast empire, giving them the resources to practice the magic? But it could be possible that the dragons actually come from/have been created in Asshai and through some unknown reason some of the first valyrians were able to tame dragons and after decades of living close together a bound was formed between those dragons and humans, also causing those side effects because of the dragons magical (unnatural) nature. While tracing the origins of their dragons maybe the valyrians learned from Asshai, which is why they got so obsessed wiith shadow and blood magic.
It is not true that the typical European dragon had 6 limbs, four legs and two wings. For example, the dragon slain by St. George had two legs and two wings in most representations of the legend in all Europe. The point is that no one intended to force a precise definition of a fantasy animal, at least during the Middle Ages. In some European language, the world wyvern, or derivatives do not even exist outside the inner circle of gamers and readers of fantasy literature and thus is not listed in dictionaries.
sigh...Wyverns are Dragons - the term "Dragon" has been historically used as an umbrella for various impossible creatures - some had 2 limbs, 4 limbs, 6 limbs etc.
Take into account the ability to warg and its possible experiments were done on wargs to link riders to dragons that way leading to a generational botched linking creating dreams of fire and blood and violence as individuals see through the eyes and minds of dragons or past dragons. This would overwhelm the human mind causing madness.
Personally, I think the dragons came from the first red comet, and that fireworms and wyverns may actually be the result of genetic experimentation on dragons themselves, also, perhaps the blood of the Dragon with the targaryens and the valerians genetic tampering
There's little to no basis for this in the lore but I like to think that the Asshai people or some other magic-using society saw a future where the fourteen flames erupted to the point of an extinction level cataclysm and so enchanted wyvern eggs to absorb the power of the volcanoes and then placed those eggs on the volcanoes knowing that they'd eventually create dragons and hatch once they'd finished absorbing the power of the volcanoes, however, when the farmers who later became the Valyrians found these eggs and removed them they gained that magical connection to the dragons yet to be hatched and then they did hatch due to their removal from the volcanoes' peaks, thus the volcanoes "woke up" as it were but took hundreds of years to erupt again, in the meantime the Valyrian freehold came into existence and the people found other forms of magic. I also think this would explain the dragon Cannibal who grew to a much greater size because it was never removed from the volcano on Dragonstone and so absorbed its power til it went extinct, then Cannibal became just that because the smaller dragons had remnants of the volcanic energy that Cannibal grew on before it hatched. Tell me if this makes no sense lol
One thing i Would like to say is that the valyrian freehold began to rise after the long night so instead of your hundreds of years for the volcanoes it would be thousands of years.
I love this kinda stuff. I really wish shows would be made about parts not already shown, like Southorous and possibly what's west of westeros. Imagine all the cool creatures they could show.
It could also be that during the creation of the dragons instead of the Valyrian houses using blood magic to add it to their own blood, instead they added their blood to the dragons themselves. That would also explain the bond between dragons and Valyrians. It could also explain why the Asshai were also able to do it because they actually created dragons and this technique. It could also explain why dragons seem to have different personalities. Some are a lot more compliant than others while there are some that seem like they share different aspects of human emotion which could again be another reason they have Valyrian blood in them instead rather than Targaryens having dragon blood thru blood magic. We have seen riders that have incredible bonds with their riders and some that don’t. Like Vermithor who took a long time to take on a new rider. We also have a dragon like Cannibal who seems to hate its own kind and ravages everything in its path
I really like the theory that dragons are chimeras, but then how wild dragons appeared? We know about the three of them, if I remember correctly, - Cannibal, Grey Ghost and Sheepstealer. Did they leave their creators or their riders died hundreds of years ago? And since dragons live a more healthy and better life in the wild, the three of them could even be one of the first dragons. And in case of Cannibal I really doubt that he was even ever bonded with anyone, because he likes to eat other dragons, and it seems like if he was a magically created beast that meant to have a rider, he wouldn't ever have thoughts about eating his own kin. P. S. I don't know the point of this comment, I just decided to share my thoughts after watching this video, also sorry for my English, it's not my first language.
If dragons were created through blood magic chimerisim, it was done thousands of years ago during the rise of Old Valyria; or even earlier during the Asshai'i Empire of the Dawn. The dragons we see in the series are the end result of thousands of years. The Targaryan's brought dragons with them to Dragonstone when they fled before the doom. Balarion was the last of their dragons hatched in Valyria, thus the youngest dragon when they fled. Likely, they originally brought several adult dragons and unhatched eggs with then to Dragonstone. The wild dragons' Sheepstealer and GrayGhost were hatched on Dragonstone at some point but escaped or resisted taming. The Cannibal is said to be nearly as large as Balarion was before is death; so, he might have been one of the first dragons hatched on Dragonstone soon after the Targaryan's relocated there.
Another interpretation for the blood magic experiments could be that dragons were linked to specific lineages, making the Dragons related to Valyrian nobility, intead of making blood magic (usually performed on criminals) on their own bodies
Given that there is a ton of evidence that dragons predate the rise of Valyria, I think it's more likely that the dragon riders themselves are the chimera.
I think they may have been originally created by a ship similar to Haviland Tuf's. And then the blood magic/genetic modification was passed down until it was just an inherited trait.
what about if Wyvern and firewyrm made dragons? And after that they poured some human blood in there as well. And thats how you get the dragons that could be bonded with.
In our world, the mythological creature of the medieval dragon was created as a hybrid of two other creatures of the ancient world, the Ancient Greek Dragon and the Griffin of Central Asia. The Ancient Greek Dragon was a giant snake-like beast, just like in the rest of the cultures of the world, and griffin is the claws, wings and head of an eagle with the hind legs of a lion. So my theory is that GRRM took this legend as inspiration to create his Wyverns hi insists in calling Dragons.
Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns: Their Unnatural History by Septon Barth. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon, also gave birth to twisted and malformed offspring. GRRM likes to keep things ambiguous and keep everyone guessing. The different followers of the different gods have different magical abilities, but even that is uncertain to whether or not there's a god manifesting magic for it's followers or the follower is tapping into something on their own.
It's highly probable that dragons weren't a widespread species until the rise of the Valyrian freehold Valyria is probably their breeding ground which is part of what gave the Valyrians the chance to become dragon riders The majority of dragons that lived during the freehold's hegemony probably are chimeras if not their direct descendants
So basically, through bloodmagic, firewyrm + wyvern = dragon dragon + human = human that can bond with dragons and has dragon like features such as some heat resistance, and dragon like features in their stillbirths such as scales, wings etc
the asshai shadow people makes more sense to me, as it also gives context as to why valyria became what it was. they weren't powerful until the dragons became part of their culture. why would valyria already exist without the dragons? it's not enough power to create such an empire. but if darker sorcerers from the land of dark magic (asshai) taught them how to be dragonlords, it makes sense why they suddenly became capable of controlling almost that entire region. if quaithe mastered her abilities in asshai, this is a direct parallel as to why she keeps guiding the last remaining dragonrider to go back to westeros. she also keeps reminding dany of her valyrian dragon heritage, what her identity truly is. if asshai shadow people were ultimately responsible for the dragons communing with a select group of people, it makes asoiaf a more expansive world than if it was just valyrians who messed with creatures. also, if wyverns and fire breathing firewyrms already existed, it's not really a stretch that fire breathing dragons already existed as well, but likely much rarer before the valyrians learned how to commune with them. i imagine that before they were taught secret power from asshai, dragons were probably extremely rare and elusive creatures who were essentially loners. but with the intervention of magic, their population and even their abilities were drastically improved in such scale, and that magical imbalance is probably a trigger as to why the "ICE" in a song of ice and fire started to have an equally strong reaction and that's why the Others started to get stronger.
HotD Theory/ potential spoiler ahead... Actually I always believed in magical hybrid theory. Which is pretty much confirmed after House of the Dragon where Daemon sang a "magical song" to tame/bond with Vermithor. English translation of the lyrics mentions two heads one fire breather and one winged leader in one but they can't act and needs a third one. Third head being the raider, sings to them for bonding. And this adds more meaning to the sigil of house targaryen. here is the english translation of lyrics, you can search youtube for song. Fire breather Winged leader But two heads To a third sing From my voice: The fires have spoken And the price has been paid With blood magic With words of flame With clear eyes To bind the three To you I sing As one we gather And with three heads We shall fly as we were destined Beautifully, freely 🔥
Martin said very very clearly: Dragons in his world have 4 limbs because 6 limbs would indicate that 2 entirely different microbes developed as all vertebrates have 4 lims in our world. or at least had. but they cannot grow additional limbs, they can only lose vestigal ones. so for the sake of realism he chose the "wYvErN" way.... not everything is DnD, buddy. What you call a "dragon" and what dnd calls "dragon" is the EUROPEAN dragon. There are many kinds, african dragons (most likely the earliest dragon myths stem from africa, in which they are large snakes btw and related to water not fire much like in asia which hints at asian dragons developing first as myths and later the european varient diverged) then there are the asian dragons, which are water spirits/gods. and so many more. also european myths know about serpentine or wurm like dragons, so that's not new to us aswell. So you can all group those mythical creatures under the name "dragon" and then have to specify "european" or "classical european" vs "wyrm" vs "wyvern" vs "asian (which you can further specify but I don't know enaugh about that)" and so on and so forth. but all of them "Dragon". I know this is about a mythical creature and debating it's family and order and stuff is pretty pointless... shut up dnd obsessed loser and accept that not everyone slaveishly obeys your bible substitute.
The alluded to medieval distinction between dragons and wyverns being two or four legs never really existed, it was a rule in (I think) English heraldry for like a century, but outside of that no one cared, lots of medieval dragon pictures have two legs
Yes! Thank you - this was one issue I took with the mostly good, informative video. Idk where he got idea that Medieval dragons were never shown as quadrupeds
@@burtan2000 I don’t how old the modern idea of a distinction is but probably either tumblr or some other space frequented by writers and people really into fantasy etc, somebody probably read the rule in heraldry and wrongly assumed that it was a unanimous rule and by the time someone thought to check it was too late
It is mostly because of D&D that people do not understand, that a dragon - even a "classic european" - can be everything from a giant snake, snake with arms, four legged beast, two legged beast with wings and even four legged beast with four wings to a giant chicken. In my opinion a rather frustrating thing, when people do not understand that there is a big diversity in folklore and that neither a short trend in English heraldry nor a modern game are the great standart of how a such diverse mythical archetype from many different cultures looks like.
Incest was common throughout the thousands of years of the freehold. Genetic manipulation by the blood mages probably prevented the worst effects of incestuous breeding while at the same time allowing them a magical connection with dragons. The blood mages and their knowledge were likely the most closely guarded secrets throughout the freehold. When the Targaryens left for dragonstone, they no longer had access to the blood mages knowledge. Incest was the best they could do to keep their magical genes in the family.
Actually I found out about dragons that it’s Dungeons and Dragons that popularized the six limbs - 2 wings 4 legs - look of dragons and they actually have a diagram for different types like how wyrms only have 2 legs 2wings or drakes have 4 legs no wings. Historically if you look at old pictures dragons had multiple designs.
Loved this video, but I'd go for a blend of the theories, because we know that the original Valyrions and dragon tamers were simple shepherds. Sheep herders (typically) don't have access to blood magic. So I find it hard to believe they would've traveled and captured both a fire wyrm and a wyvern and then coerced them to crossbreed during a ritual. Additionally, the first dragon tamers couldn't have had dragon blood because again, the dragons (allegedly) came to the Valyrian region from elsewhere, where they then somehow tamed them. I think possibly they could've experimented after the fact to maybe improve things, but it had to start somewhere. I'd guess that Dragons and Dragon-related magic probably started further east, and as their population spread so did the eastern culture and their (now lost) ways.
I always thought they were aliens. You have that story about them coming from the moon, and that comet seems the be correlated with the return of magic.
I don't think only Dragonlords can ride them. Anyone with Valyrian blood has "Blood of the Dragon". The Velaryons and Celtigars, as well as the Rhogare's and Qoherys, could ride dragons if they ever had their own. They just never did I dont think Dragons are bound to certain bloodlines either. The Dragonlords married kin for the same reason Egyptian Pharaoh's and European nobles married siblings and cousins, etc. To keep power in their own family, and dragons also equal power. Sure, some bloodmagic to bind a line of dragons to a family isnt out of the realm of possibility, but if its ever revealed that this is NOT the case, I wouldn't be surprised. Sure, they each have their own dragons and likely guard them, but Valyrian dragons seemingly had free reign to fly over the peninsula as they wished. So, if a dragon mates with another one from another Dragonlord house, well... what happens? And surely, some dragons weren't tamed, and just did their own thing. Dragon skeletons are found all around the World. (Also, its interesting to think that perhaps Valyrian incest isn't as damaging as it would be for other races. Yes it affects them, but anyone else consistently doing the same likely wouldn't make it long before they ended up as Hapsburg level of deformities, or worse. And then lead to infertility overall.) Also, as for the Great Empire of the Dawn, its thought that perhaps each of the Emperors were actually dynasties. So, maybe Valyrians come from the group of people under the Amythest Emperors, and maybe their ancestors were Dragonlords/Blood of the Dragon as well. For instance, the Amythest Emperor was actually the line of an Amythest family that ruled for a long time, and before them, another family ruled with different eye color and name. Bloodstone Emperor may have been one guy, with red eyes, but he ended it all so, no Valyrians with red eyes I guess. Its thought that perhaps the Daynes and even the more ancient Hightowers have Ancestry from there. The Hightowers have been a House from before even Valyria was a thing, and the Hightowers and Daynes share traits that Valyrians have, and yet shouldn't given their history. Daynes often have the purple eyes and silver hair, and the Hightowers usually just have the hair. In fact, Alicent Hightower was supposed to have Silver hair, but dark haired artwork seems to have stuck its mark. Jaehaerys had often mistakenly thought Alicent for one of his own daughters in his later years due to this reason. And Hightower ladies in the main series, like the one married to Jorah have hair much like Dany's own. Maybe, these houses can claim decent from the Great Empire of the Dawn. If its true, then the myths of a member from House Hightower killing a Dragon where the Hightower itself now stands makes sense. Maybe the Hightowers were Dragonlords, but perhaps their last one was injured somehow, and when they came to Westeros, decided to put it out of its misery by their own hands. Speculation of course, but interesting food for thought. The Velaryons and Targaryens having Blue eyes occasionally may also be due to this theory, maybe a Sapphire Dynasty from the Great Empire of the Dawn had blue eyes and silver hair, much like how Dany had a dream of people with the same features Valyrians are known for, but of different eye colors.
Dude, U missed the Basic Fundamental part. Not all of the Families in Valyria are Blood of the Dragons. Only the 40 Dragon riding Families alone have the blood of the Dragon aka they are the only Valyrian Nobility. In Valyria, Order is like this 1. 40 Dragon Riding Families - Highest Nobility - Eg. Targaryens. 2. Navy Holders - Next best to the Nobility - Eg. Velaryons. 3. Houses with just Foot Soldiers - Eg. Celtigars.... So U see, only those 40 Nobility Houses alone have the Blood of the Dragon. And only they can ride Dragons. If any of the other Houses want to ride a Dragons, they would have to make a Marriage with these 40 Houses and have a Children with the Blood of the Dragon, and through them only they can ride the Dragons lol...
@@dineshbalu6107 I don't know, that's never been confirmed. All the Valyrians have the same features, there's no distinction between Celtigar, Qoherys, Velaryon and Targaryen. The Targaryens were lower Dragonlords, but still powerful. There's no proof that ONLY these 40 Dragonlord families have the ability to ride dragons. And we don't know how all these houses originated. And you can't assume their positions based on how they are in Westeros. For all we know, the Celtigars may have had the same strength as the Velaryons back in the day, maybe not, but that's all we know of in a more modern sense. So, again, the Celtigars and Velaryons may not NEED to have married Targaryens in order to have dragonriding abilities. Just like in Westeros, the high Lords have more power than others. The Lannisters, Starks, Gardners/Tyrells, Hightowers, etc are all major houses, doesn't mean their blood is necessarily all that different, just more focused on. Starks, Strongs and Blackwoods all have the blood of the First Men, but the Starks surpassed to become King's of Winter, then Wardens of the North. Doesn't mean only they can warg or control Dire Wolves and Greensee into Wierwood Trees.
@@thalmoragent9344 Both of ur Questions have been answered by the Showrunners and Grrm particularly in his Interviews and in some of his Blogs. He certainly said that Dragon riding abilites are limited to Valyrian Nobility alone aka those 42 houses alone can ride Dragons. As for Warging and Greenseer, It never was the 1st men trait to begin with. It was the Children of the Forest powers, given to them by the Old Gods through Wierwood trees. Some old man then adopted this after the Children accepted them. So only those particular First Men descendants alone can Warg and Greenseer. Likely Some of the Starks, Blackwoods, Reeds, Wildings etc etc. So Both of ur doubts are related to bloodlines.. Hope I made it clear for U....
@@dineshbalu6107 Well, many of the firstmen had these abilities regardless of Rank in society, that's what my point was. Many First Men got these abilities, not just the "nobles", but even just regular dudes. And keep in mind, Celtigar, Qoherys, and Velaryon are also noble families, it's not just the 40 Dragonlords. So unless he said Dragonlords are the only ones who can ride Dragonlords, it makes me wonder... What makes them different to other Valyrians, who also have special, magical blood? The ancient Valyrians were descendants of the Great Empire of the Dawn, specifically the Amethyst Empress, who was said to have silver hair and purple eyes. There are theories that she was Nissa Nissa, who was killed by Azor Ahai, the Bloodstone Emperor.
I have a theory that dragons could be prehistoric creatures that lay dormant in eggs until the first valerians discovered and hatched them because we seen dragon eggs can stay hatchable for 100s of years as Denny’s dragon eggs were as old when daemon sale them away to traders in house of the dragon also dragon bones can be found all around the world before Valyria rises and vlayria wouldn’t even rises in power without dragons as they were originally sheepherders that discovered hatch and raised the ancient fire breathing creatures and just used blood magic to Bond and tame them that they learn form for sorcerer form the shadow lands.
Makes me upset they haven’t (at least yet) given any of the dragons their book accurate flame color in the show. Would’ve loved to see Drogon with black flames, or Syrax’s gold flame. It’s an intriguing level of fantasy that’s already there, just not used.
If they were created, then how is the whole world's magic linked to them? It would mean the valerians had a hand in creating/restructuring the very magic of the world. If they were natural it would fit better. There were several references to the return of magic at the same time as the return of dragons. Perhaps wyverns and fireworms are mutated descendents from dragons?
The Targaryens was a lower house. I think it's safe to say they didn't know how to use the dragon/blood magic power to its fullest extent. But was chosen by some power to carry on the magic. They were just the most powerful in a land that had not known the Simi-power they had. So a few questions: why them of all the houses? How much don't they know of the magic? Why did they receive the dream? It hints at what you are saying but it don't give any answers.
Why didn't you include the scene from Game of thrones season one where Deanarys kills Miri Maz Dur to give birth to the Dragons? I think you have a lot in there.
Before the doom, pure blood could be protected by marrying into other dragon lord families. No incest needed. The Targaryans however found themselves with no dragon lords but themselves.
Can i just add, am i the only one who noticed that in the show of HOTD, daemon basically sings to vemithor how to create dragons? DAEMON WAS CASUALLY GIVING US THE RECIPE ON HOW TO MAKE A DRAGON????? it reminds me of one maester’s theory, i think it talks about (1) bloodworm/fire breathing worms in the mines of Valyria, (2) wyvern, flying lizards but does not breathe fire, (3) valyrian blood (blood of dragon lords like targaryen). 3 of them were merged into 1 creature, dragons. Maybe the “price paid” he was talking about was a significant number of dragon lords’ blood, back then was a sheep fkers maybe they were subjects to spent on experiments through blood magic trying to merge the 3 of them! There was also this nonsense in blackfyre rebellion where they say “targaryans can turn into dragons”, maybe that was half true. First verse gives me goosebumps!! Fire breather - bloodworm Winged leader - wyverns 2 heads, to a third sing, - 3rd head was the one who’s singing!!! DRAGON LORDS!! Singing might be “consciousness” or something akin to it. With words of flames - flame breathing that cmes out of mouth just like words- blood worm With clear eyes - clear eyes cos they need it at flying - wyverns Bind the three, to you i sing - let my consciousness be the bind of us 3- singer/ dragon lords As one we gather! With our 3 heads we shall fly. WTF i think i broke the code!!!
Id like to think both wild dragons and valeriyan dragons are different and in fact wild dragons existed long before when magic was spread like wildfire across the world and the diminishment of magic led to their downfall thus creating the need for people like valyriyans rich in resources and magic but also lineage that remembers them to experiment and create something similar a magical hybrid that only valyrians can tame
it also could make sense evolutionary wise fire wyrms and wyverns coming from the same draconic wild ancestory but one took a path of keeping fire breathing and the other its flight
I always figured the Great Empire of the Dawn made Dragons then when the empire collapsed they spread throughout the world. But they used Dragonhorns to bind them (I think Euron got all his stuff from the East and never landed in Valaryia). The Valaryians using similar magic created their own dragons. This time with their own blood for the connection and bonding Wyverns to the local firewyrms of the 14. Leaves everything in the video valid. Also might explain why Valaryians never made it to Westeros as they spent a long time hunting down these other breeds of dragons for global supremacy one day.
I think it’s correct on both parts but one of the studies on blood gave us gene splicing so why would they not be able to do so with blood magic taught to them by mysterious people who are not named splicing the blood of wyverns and firewyrms into great beast known as dragons including the water dragons. You could say they were failed experiments until balerion the black dread was formed and that was say the complete work of the experiment so they could then create dragonryders soon to become half dragon half human for example Dany’s child looked and was described to be half dragonic like with wings and scales and tail but it died so call that a failed experiment. Then the ice dragon theory was also quite on point the others have been around for thousands of years so what makes you think they were not taught to do the same as old Valeria or they used some of the dragons that went astray to make into their own ice dragons
the problem with them i think there fire are so strong and look like It doesn't end The amount of fires it needs to burn an army or castle and Flying is also very, very large, even if its source is magic, and it does it continuously without stopping Especially since the world of writers is limited in terms of magic. It's not like Harry Potter

A hybrid of wyverns and fire wyrms is more suited to the storyline

@@kool4209 odds are that if dragons were a regular species, they would
1) have to migrate as they keep depleting areas of animals as they eat anything with meat
2) be extremely territorial, and have large territories at that, as they can fly many long distances
Where are you guys getting sll this information from?

What if the bones of ancient dragons were the inspiration for the chimera dragons? Perhaps the ancient dragons were the typical 6-appendaged fire-breathing reptiles, but they went extinct. Their surviving wyvern cousins were then used to “bring back” the legendary beasts in a similar way that we might. (theoretically) use the modern elephant to “resurrect” the woolly mammoth.

Could it be that the dragons were tamed twice? With evidence of them being found all over? Great video, love the lore.

"At night, light can be seen in only one window in ten."
Asshai and/or The Empire of the Dawn made dragons.
Pendragon literally means "the dragon's head"
Some believe taking a sword from a stone refers to how humans FIRST made real steel.
Cool theory! And well explained

Great Dawn of the Empire!
Makes perfect sense. It also explains the story about that Targaryen that was born deformed and scaly
Martin wasted the oportunity to have dragonborns in the series
I think that the Valyians are part Dragons themselves.
Your channel is awesome man. The quality is really up there with channels with millions of subscribers, and is one of the best channels out there for asioaf lore.
I agree completely

Left overs from the empire of the dawn
They’d be both. You’d have to have dragons of some mature to begin with, in order to genetically manipulate them, & their potential riders.

I think the return of Aerea goes a long way to explaining the origin of dragons.
They’re aesthetically pleasing that way.
Love your theories 🙂
Magical Chimaeras is a cool idea and fits with the whitewalkers being made also and not being natural.
Ice dragons vs. fire dragons. I'm calling that fight in the winds of winter. The last dance of dragons
I always thought it was probably a mix of wyverns and fyreworms, and then they were bred by the Valyrians to keep their connection
The blood magic theory makes perfect sense.
Nice explanation
When a mommy wyvern and a daddy firewyrm really love each other…
Also explains why Targs have some fire resistance. Though I find it hard to believe that mated Dragon and humans
Boom great video
Now i want to see a fire worm.
Dragons are so fucking cool
Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns: Their Unnatural History by Septon Barth. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon, also gave birth to twisted and malformed offspring. GRRM likes to keep things ambiguous and keep everyone guessing. The different followers of the different gods have different magical abilities, but even that is uncertain to whether or not there's a god manifesting magic for it's followers or the follower is tapping into something on their own.
Those boys who finished the show with Drogon giving a sigh and leaving really finished that show unexpectedly. Dragons are older they don't care
It's highly probable that dragons weren't a widespread species until the rise of the Valyrian freehold
Valyria is probably their breeding ground which is part of what gave the Valyrians the chance to become dragon riders
The majority of dragons that lived during the freehold's hegemony probably are chimeras if not their direct descendants
So basically, through bloodmagic, firewyrm + wyvern = dragon
dragon + human = human that can bond with dragons and has dragon like features such as some heat resistance, and dragon like features in their stillbirths such as scales, wings etc
the asshai shadow people makes more sense to me, as it also gives context as to why valyria became what it was. they weren't powerful until the dragons became part of their culture. why would valyria already exist without the dragons? it's not enough power to create such an empire. but if darker sorcerers from the land of dark magic (asshai) taught them how to be dragonlords, it makes sense why they suddenly became capable of controlling almost that entire region.
if quaithe mastered her abilities in asshai, this is a direct parallel as to why she keeps guiding the last remaining dragonrider to go back to westeros. she also keeps reminding dany of her valyrian dragon heritage, what her identity truly is.
if asshai shadow people were ultimately responsible for the dragons communing with a select group of people, it makes asoiaf a more expansive world than if it was just valyrians who messed with creatures. also, if wyverns and fire breathing firewyrms already existed, it's not really a stretch that fire breathing dragons already existed as well, but likely much rarer before the valyrians learned how to commune with them. i imagine that before they were taught secret power from asshai, dragons were probably extremely rare and elusive creatures who were essentially loners. but with the intervention of magic, their population and even their abilities were drastically improved in such scale, and that magical imbalance is probably a trigger as to why the "ICE" in a song of ice and fire started to have an equally strong reaction and that's why the Others started to get stronger.
I LOVE this theory
HotD Theory/ potential spoiler ahead...
Actually I always believed in magical hybrid theory. Which is pretty much confirmed after House of the Dragon where Daemon sang a "magical song" to tame/bond with Vermithor. English translation of the lyrics mentions two heads one fire breather and one winged leader in one but they can't act and needs a third one. Third head being the raider, sings to them for bonding. And this adds more meaning to the sigil of house targaryen. here is the english translation of lyrics, you can search youtube for song.
Fire breather
Winged leader
But two heads
To a third sing
From my voice:
The fires have spoken
And the price has been paid
With blood magic
With words of flame
With clear eyes
To bind the three
To you I sing
As one we gather
And with three heads
We shall fly as we were destined
Beautifully, freely
🔥
If dragons were a hybrid between wyverns and fyrewyrms, how in the hell did they manage to get them to mate let alone catch them?
Magic 🤷🏼♂️
Nice video can you tell me where you found the map at 8:26 because I have been looking for a good map of the Westeros for a good while
Martin said very very clearly: Dragons in his world have 4 limbs because 6 limbs would indicate that 2 entirely different microbes developed as all vertebrates have 4 lims in our world. or at least had. but they cannot grow additional limbs, they can only lose vestigal ones.
so for the sake of realism he chose the "wYvErN" way.... not everything is DnD, buddy.
In GoT the grey scale disease I think is contacted from dragon to human and it would cause an infection on humans.
They just never did
I dont think Dragons are bound to certain bloodlines either.
And then lead to infertility overall.)
Also, as for the Great Empire of the Dawn, its thought that perhaps each of the Emperors were actually dynasties.
In Valyria, Order is like this
1. 40 Dragon Riding Families - Highest Nobility - Eg. Targaryens.
@@dineshbalu6107
I don't know, that's never been confirmed.
@@dineshbalu6107
Well, many of the firstmen had these abilities regardless of Rank in society, that's what my point was.
They all have heat tolerance, they have the same set of appearances, so... what gives?
@@thalmoragent9344 Look Man, I never said anything about Royals or lords or anything about Society as far as First Men are concerned alright?? I said it's limited to speicific Bloodlines, that bloodline can be Royals or Beggars or Whores or thieves or literally anyone alright...
Now, as for Valyria. What part of this u dont Understand?? Seriously Why can't u get this?
1. Dragon Riders - 1st Class - Only Valyrian Nobility - 42 Dragon riding Families - Targaryens are one of them... Only these 42 have the Blood of the Dragon... The Writer said this a Million times lol... Not to mention, I'm telling U this for the 3rd time🤦😂...
2. Navy Holders - 2nd Class - Velaryons
3. Foot Soldiers - 3rd class - Celtigars....
As for anything Special in those 42 Dragon Riding Houses Blood,
1. High Heat Resistance
2. Potential of Dragon Dreams and DreamWalkers.
3. Blood Magic bind with the Dragons. They can bond, ride or even control a Dragon...
4. Potential to become Fire Mages, which is lost now.
They could of kronenberg the whole of Westeros
The ancient Valyrians were descendants of the Great Empire of the Dawn, specifically the Amethyst Empress, who was said to have silver hair and purple eyes. There are theories that she was Nissa Nissa, who was killed by Azor Ahai, the Bloodstone Emperor.

What if some of test dragons escaped and go into sothoryos and the known world
That could explain urrax dragon in westeros
So wait is the origin just that a wyvern and a firewyrm got drunk on the beach?
Nice channel
Cheers mate
Makes me upset they haven’t (at least yet) given any of the dragons their book accurate flame color in the show. Would’ve loved to see Drogon with black flames, or Syrax’s gold flame. It’s an intriguing level of fantasy that’s already there, just not used.
If they were created, then how is the whole world's magic linked to them? It would mean the valerians had a hand in creating/restructuring the very magic of the world. If they were natural it would fit better. There were several references to the return of magic at the same time as the return of dragons. Perhaps wyverns and fireworms are mutated descendents from dragons?
Maybe the valerians mastered the knowledge of the words magic and used it to create them, it spossible the a way
The Targaryens was a lower house.
I like the look if the wyvern more.
But why don't Targaryens burn in fire yet in the book fire worms can kill them????
It's funny. Their dreams are warnings, not something to seek.
I think they’re similar to Skyrim lore, children of one of the primeval Gods of the universe
Fire breather - bloodworm
Winged leader - wyverns
2 heads, to a third sing, - 3rd head was the one who’s singing!!! DRAGON LORDS!! Singing might be “consciousness” or something akin to it.
With words of flames - flame breathing that cmes out of mouth just like words- blood worm
With clear eyes - clear eyes cos they need it at flying - wyverns
Bind the three, to you i sing - let my consciousness be the bind of us 3- singer/ dragon lords
As one we gather!
The blood of the dragon would also explain Dany survivng a fire pyre.
maybe the three heads damon sings of is three things used to make dragons. or maybe two of those things and one human
Then the ice dragon theory was also quite on point the others have been around for thousands of years so what makes you think they were not taught to do the same as old Valeria or they used some of the dragons that went astray to make into their own ice dragons
the problem with them i think there fire are so strong and look like It doesn't end
The amount of fires it needs to burn an army or castle and Flying is also very, very large, even if its source is magic, and it does it continuously without stopping
Especially since the world of writers is limited in terms of magic. It's not like Harry Potter
