Kangaroo Island bushfires - Day 7 update on RSPCA South Australia's response

Our Chief Veterinarian Brad is part of our second crew helping treat and triage fire-affected animals on Kangaroo Island. “It's pretty overwhelming when you realise the vast majority of koalas on the island have lost their habitat and a significant number have died in the fire,” he said.
Dr Brad spent the past few days working within the SAVEM field tent set up at the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, where more than 100 burned koalas are in care.
“It is mainly koalas but we are getting a few other things, the odd possum, bird, some kestrels and ducks, a few kangaroos and we had a monitor lizard in the other day. I think part of the reason we’re seeing so many koalas is that they’re easier for the public to catch and bring in. They're a size that most people are comfortable with bringing in and they perhaps don't have the same potential hazards as a large kangaroo.”
As our third crew heads over to Kangaroo Island today to relieve crew two, we have a team out on the roads, following up reports of injured animals and searching for any wildlife in need of assistance.
Yesterday, Inspector Gary and Rescue Officer Brigitte also assisted the Australian Army and PIRSA in assessing and treating a mob of 4,500 sheep that survived when fire tore through the Flinders Chase Farm Stay. Incredibly, almost every sheep survived and only 12 required treatment! We’ll have more information on this soon.

Perché questi incendi purtroppo fanno parte dell'Australia e capitano ogni decennio. La flora e fauna si rinnova così... quello che è cambiato è che ora cani e porci possono filmare di tutto... e i mass media esagerano ogni cosa.
