RDR2 online: A ''Friendly Fire'' Incident

  • I'm presenting the following for a couple of reasons, but none of them are malicious. Sometime last week I was in online and hunting with another player when we came across a Polish national who seemed to be concerned about us being there - we are after all, high-ranking players. In order to show them that we weren't anything to be worried by, I had made a point of introducing myself to one of the two people you're going to see in this video ... and they proved to be friendly (later, during our reprisal they got shot by accident - sorry about that, but mamka mu as we say in Bulgaria, happens).
Sometime later, I happened to notice that same player, and with them was another player with a name that I'll not go into details about here, deciding to be nice to them, went to where they were with what I felt to be a simple peace offering -- only to have my brains instantly blown out. After that, we shot at them to point out the error of their ways, and I mailed them a notice that they were going to get the 'Avenging Terrier Treatment' for abusing me ... this led to them mailing me back with an apology, and their explaining that they were easily spooked which is why they shot me. Well, fair enough. I'll accept that for what it is. They seemed to be genuinely sorry.
However, for somebody who was easily spooked they were very quick to draw a gun and shoot me in the head, and equally were using a mod menu for protection, being in god mode meant that we could not fight them. I also felt that spawning gold wasn't honest, but I decided on general principle not to make a point about that and just politely warned the one who had shot me that if RSG got wind of their modding they could lose their account - and no, I did not report the modder or their 'griefing' me as I was happy to accept that they acted in what they felt to be self-defense.
But this raises the question, doesn't it? That players are now resorting to using mods to be able to play online without being molested! I don't agree with the spawning; to me, that's cheating and giving themselves an unfair advantage ... with modders you never know if they earned what they have or just STOLE IT, and stealing it isn't playing the game. It's also dishonorable. I earned my rank the hard way with quick and accurate shooting, by playing the game as intended and above all else, being nice to my fellow players unless they had some desperate wish to make my life more interesting, in which case I made it my business to show them the error of their ways until such time that they rage-quit or pussied off of the server.
I guess in the final equation this amounts to Friendly or less than friendly fire. Anyway, no harm, no foul, even if I did shoot their horse, but at the time I thought I was dealing with an asshole and felt I had the right to do so.
