- We’re digging a new mouth for the Don River. The new mouth of the Don River will be between two to three metres deep depending on the location and the season. Right now, it’s a dry riverbed. People always ask: how are you going to flood the river? And won’t that look really cool? Joey Herrington explains why it’s actually going to be pretty boring, and how we’re going to do it.

I knew it could only be that dramatic in a video game. I'm looking forward to the new island but i have two concerns...
1. The Signature Waterfront Streetlights weren't used. Instead, Toronto Hydro put up utilitarian street lights that look out of place compared to the beautiful bridges they're standing on.
2. In order to increase housing supply, the 2017 precinct plan is getting revised. I saw the rendering for the 3 options you guys developed, and I think it's just too much. The key to building more housing is opening up the vast majority of Toronto to reasonable development, instead of restricting most areas to single-family homes. Cramming as much density as possible into one of the most picturesque public projects in the country isn't going to help that much, but it will make the park, river, and streets much less enjoyable. Perhaps some parts can use a little more density, but what you're proposing is out of scale with the size of the island and the original vision for it. For example, Commissioners was supposed to have a series of mid-rise buildings that are all the same height, in order to create a feeling of grandeur. You're proposing to throw this out. Out of all the options, I prefer Option 3, but it's still pretty disappointing. We need comprehensive planning reform across the entire region, not cramming people into closely-spaced, overwhelming towers that have no respect for their surroundings and make it hard to enjoy streetscapes on a human scale. In the 2017 Precinct Plan, you proposed a couple of towers that were appropriately placed, well integrated into their mid-rise bases, and actually contributed to the visual identity of the island's skyline. Now, the built form of the island will be incoherent, confusing, and invasive to the park since the island isn't actually that big.
I hope my comments are taken into consideration. You've done such great work but I'm worried that this could substantially lower the end result as a whole.

We’ll start flooding the river valley early next year and the project will be complete by the end of 2024. We expect parks will be open to the public in spring/summer 2025.
Can't wait to see it finished! But honestly, it's not really a valley; it's a floodplain. The Don upstream of Keating Channel flows through a valley.
They are going raise the whole island up a couple meters eventually right know they are building up the foundation/bedrock (what ever it's called) to make sure that there will be stable ground to build on when the area going be developed. Though you are right there are areas of it intentionally designated as floodplains but that's standard practice with these types of projects.
Aw, I was really looking forward to coming to the grand flooding event where they removed the plugs and a torrent of water rushed into the valley to applause but due to a miscalculation by the engineers the flow was too high and it swept away all the spectators Lord of the Rings style. Oh well
Cool video. I do have a question, though. When you say pump the lake water in, can you and do you take advantage of the siphon effect? Seems to me you could use gravity to do most of the pumping with machine power only being used to start the siphon and control it.
We need greater control on flow rates and the location of filling operations so we’ll be using pumps to direct water at specified rates and locations.

The new river valley we’re building will be an extension of the Don River, so there will be no filtration between the existing river and new river mouth.

This project is building a new mouth for the Don River - but we could say ‘an additional’ mouth. Currently, the Don River flows into the Keating Channel and out into Lake Ontario. There will be one where the Don Greenway connects to the Ship Channel. Within the river valley, there are carp gates at the entrance to a few of the wetlands that flank the river on either side.

Can someone explain why if the new Don river valley is better why they did not continue through to the shipping channel and inner harbour as well?
The primary purpose of this project is flood mitigation despite the land development aspect it's still a net cost to build land and it's cheaper to build north than south into the lake. RCTransit made a great vid on this here "Toronto's Building a New Island (with

There was some other flood projects done in the west end around old mills neighbourhood and elsewhere up north along the Humber river. The city is building up our water system to deal with the potential of another flood event like hurricane Hazel but worse.
Our plans for flood protection connect the Don River to both the Inner Harbour and the Ship Channel. Our work is actually extending the Don River Valley south of where it currently turns into the Keating Channel. You can find a good map here: portlandsto.ca/project-details/
Just one question, can I swim in the river as it's being filled?
It’s on an active construction site, so no. But also you would probably have more fun standing in a slowly-filling bathtub. Less plants and algae and stuff to deal with too.

Why are you pumping when you could have incorporated a slceway pipe and valve or spillway with a stop log gate into the plugs and just opened the gate and let gravity fill the new channel? No energy required.

I've literally never heard of this river. The furthest East I've been was Edmonton. Believe it or not, there are Canadians that don't live in Ontario/Quebec.

Am I actually a "Canadian"? My great grandfather came here in the 1880's, but since I don't buy milk in bags, or live in the golden horseshoe or, whatever, and since I don't live in Quebec, I'm not Canadian enough, by the internet drama.
Looks beautiful, but it’s a shame we’ve lost so much heavy industry on the waterfront just to replace it with a forest of sterile condos. Canada Malting and Victory Soy Mills were things of beauty. So was the maze of trackwork serving it all.

@@aaronstanley6914 I do, but it’s also about proper land use. Toronto has almost no heavy industry left, which is what ports are for. Can’t have a long term successful city with a bunch of people working on laptops. Love the new River design for flood control though.
@@1Nanerz I agree generally with that just instead of city I'd say province/state. Luckily there are other places along lake Ontario for heavy industry just really sucks Toronto out grew it's self. Honestly I'm shock that we still have the few factories we do have that still use the water way like red path. I went there when I was a kid in the late 2000s and thought even then it`d would be sold off for redevelopment and they'd set up the plant in the country of origin for the unrefined sugar we process here.

When I was young I was fascinated but the sheer size of the grain elevators and I could stand on the Spadina Ave bridge for hours watching all the trains at the roundhouse and railyards. I thought it was like the bloodstream and vital organs of the city. Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder I guess.
