The comments are knocking this guys teaching skills but I have something to say. I didn't know the song 20 minutes ago and now I do. I think he did a good job.

1st position - 4 3 2 3
2nd position - 4 3 2 3 4
3rd position - 5 3 2 3
4th position - 6 3 2

Connor Kovack He seem to be struming the strings 6 and 3 on the 5th position. not 6, 2. you might want to edit that :)
Though it was a little fast paced, it kept my attention and I was able to learn the song just fine. If you’re not following, just pause the video periodically until you get it down. No need to bash the man.

@@AvrgNerdd Standard tuning but capo on the first fret. The pick you choose will also being out that tinkle sound. D'addario Ice picks are great for this.

This song is not in standard tuning. There is no capo involved. This link is the actual tuning used for this song. tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/goo_goo_dolls/slide_tabs_13275
It sounds close, but the song was recorded in an alternate tuning (as are most GGD songs) which is why none of the "easy versions" sound quite right. You can find the actual tuning/chord shapes online. UA-cam video "watch?v=RELqdqLnn94" has John Rzeznik talking about it when he played with Daryl Hall for his web show.

It was a great tutorial, I was looking at the tabs and didn't quite understand it but watching him play straightened it all out for me.
this is one of the better teachers I've seen so far. (Even though this song is easier than my limit, I see him teaching it better than others have done so with far easier songs.)
Just take your time in getting those chord shapes down and very soon you'll be playing almost all songs that are completely chord-driven...

I don't think Johnny Rzeznik actually plays it like this. I'm pretty sure he has a special tuning for this song.....

@txmmylombardo each chord in the chorus and verse starts with 3 down strums...after that you can jus fill in with some up strums...i use DDD DUU UDD...hope it helps
The thing he doesn't explain but is really important is the variable strumming. Notice how sometimes the thinner strings get emphasised and sometimes the thicker. This is hard to explain in teaching but you just have got to try a little bit variation until you 'feel' it.
It's called triple-drop-D, and it is very similar to the tuning he uses for Name, the only difference being the 5th and 6th strings are tuned down a whole step from the Slide tuning for Name. I personally like this standard-tuning version he's showing here as the high strings sound prettier for the beginning than the lower strings played in the triple-drop-D tuning version.

the best lesson ever quick and clear and easy
very briefly. As Kachunski says, he playes the 5th string [A-string] of the C, then slides it up 2 frets. Then plays the 4th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th, ---- slide back down to C and play full chord.

he plays 4-3-2, and then 3 before 432 again? and 2-3 before 5-3-2?

I thought he was great. I've had a download of tabs from a site I won't mention that totally confused me so I put it in a back-burner pile. I think it was so easy and straight-forward without the deviations some tutors throw in to let us know they can play major 7th's or is it a 13th? LOL. Great job. Does anyone get the technique for that ryhtm muting he does from 5:00 to 5:10? Sounds cool but I dont get it. Is it only by muting with left hand or is there some trick with the right hand? I cant get the G muted... only bar chords :/ Thanks!
The idiots complaining about his teaching need to go back to playing "smoke on the water" on the low E string. If you have any idea at all about how to play basic guitar songs then this video was perfect. If you need someone to explain up and down strumming and chord changing, then you need to learn how to play first.
My problem is struming :( dont always know which strings to hit and if its up or down strum.

If you don't feel like tuning your guitar you can play this with Em7, Dsus4, Cadd9 and G and it sounds just as good...but i really only came here for the strum pattern.

Can't get the strumming down in the chorus... I don't really know how to get that muting in when you strum up and down and it cancels the sound in between =/
I've pretty much got it down after about an hour but I'm having trouble with the g to c part where you slide it up 2 frets. Is there a trick that I can use to make it any cleaner?

+Joshua Wolfenbarger if you can't do the slide part, start with a power slide. Johnny uses frequently live, then with time you can do exactly like that.

I do appreciate free lessons and there are so many AMAZING teachers on YT. This lesson got the job done but it did feel like the dude was learning the song as he was teaching it. Albeit, he pulled it off but definitely seemed like he was at least trying to remember the song phrasing and structure as he was going. In other words, it didn't seem like he "Planned" the lesson but rather just threw on the camera and winged it. It's all good though.

you should explain the capo to them and that he plays it in a alternately tuned guitar that isn't capo..what ever tab you used is wrong
