Great video. I’m in the middle of bringing a barn find 1971 CL450 back to life after being abandoned in 1980. I’ve learned SO much from your videos. I’m a long time Norton and Triumph mechanic and it’s a revaluation to me how sophisticated the 450 was almost 60 years ago. I surprised to see the iron (or is it steel) combustion chamber ‘skull. Rudge did that in 1935 with bronze. Thanks for explaining each procedure so thoroughly.
Thank you so much for the great videos , hey I'm sure we can slide the chain in first out the way before installing the center main bearing and torquing it, would save a little less fineggiling, I think ....
Thank you so much for posting this! My CB450's engine is on a stand and I'll be doing all of this same work soon. It will be my first time doing anything like it, and this video (and the rest in the series) will be extremely helpful!
Quick tip: make a note of the correct position of the gear shift drum before putting the gear shift forks back. It can be done incorrectly and then you have to take the cases apart again to put it right.
Great video, we will be expecting a thorough video on the top end rebuild. That’s where we will be needing all the detailed explanations on the intricacies of the cb450 top end. Thank you once again for taking out time to make these videos. It’s definitely some great knowledge we’ve been yearning for.
How can a watch someone reconnect the cam chain. I’ve done it but found it very difficult. Getting the cam shafts, the cam followers and crank shaft all in the right place to reconnect the cam chain is the hardest part of working on these engines
Was getting scared I was never going to see the conclusion of a build; so glad to see it’s still happening. So 3 bond and NO gasket is what you end up with? Or is there never a gasket in this case?
Make you use a proper JIS screw driver Why didn't you put the cam chain in first while putting the crankshaft in ? Also do not put oil on bolts that go into blind holes , You can hydro lock and blow the case out
Got the top end apart on a cb350. Any tips on getting all the carbon build up off the Pistons and head? I tried using a scotchbrite pad and sea foam but it seems to be leaving tiny little scratches. Not sure
that such a friend will now begin to rebuild an old and broken cb 450, which is missing pistons on measure and I think a connecting rod, you know of some link where to get them. It is one of my projects that I would like to fix by myself. I'm from Mexico I hope and help me
This is great as are all of your vids Just ordered a bunch of stuff for my 450 from your site When your motor is together can you walk through the valve and cam chain adjustment process? There are no good UA-cam vids on that
What oil are you guys using in the yellow pump bottle ?..... and what other assembly lubes and products would you recommend having on hand when rebuilding ?
The pump bottle is just straight engine oil. I'd say you need as far as oils and lubes go just a pumper bottle full of engine oil and engine assembly lube and you would be good.
I asked them 4 months ago and got this reply. "Nope, we still have not released all the videos in that series, there are another 3 videos in that series to go live. This is simply some basic tune-up information that we have been asked for consistently for quite some time. We'll finish up the 450 engine assembly soon."
And the first thing we do is drape the cam chain around the crank as we lower it into place - errr no we did'nt do that cos we know a harder way to do it?
We do not do full rebuilds but we do offer reground camshafts, gasket sets, pistons, seals, hones, measuring tools and endless endless knowledge and support to get you through an engine rebuild of your own. Its a fun project that, with the right help, gets you back on the road in no time! Check out our knowledge base and support over at common-motor.com
Its a completely different engine. If you're looking for help on a rebuild though you can always reach out to our support lines. We have a tech support call back line for more in depth topics such as engine rebuilds.
While I appreciate the work involved filming an engine rebuild it seems many video makers make a part one but fail to follow up with part two, such a shame as they're so helpful.
I'm sure you know that you are referring to an "engine" when you refer to it as a MOTOR over and over again. It's really a matter of being obsessed with the word motor. Very interesting folkloric touch. And the video is extremely well done and I have rebuilt my own Honda 450cc engine. thanks.
*You must edit this*. Guys, your intent is in the right place but WTF - Dry main and journals with no assembly lube. Have you ever had sex before? Perhaps not. But you have not seen or understand the most basic principle of an engine or it's assembly. Anyway, now go fuck grinding steel. This is not a joke. This is a possible engine seizing mistake. Just spinning the crank the way you are is making me nuts while it is dry on that pin. Ask, educate, or best yet recruit someone who can can help you, first. There is a young, or ideally older Honda mechanic in town who would be glad to share his experience (and the in's and out's) and get this right for all.

Thanks for putting this together. I've got a 450 in pieces needing the motivation and time to get it back together. This helps!
I just pick up a 1972 cb450. Going binge watch this series
Quick tip: make a note of the correct position of the gear shift drum before putting the gear shift forks back. It can be done incorrectly and then you have to take the cases apart again to put it right.
Do you rebuild motors for yourself or do you . I'm asking cause my son bought his first motorcycle and the motor needs to be rebuilt.
I love the 450 honda picks

this is a great series. I wish you had included more information on getting the crank into specifications. and the evaluation process
So you put the three bond on both sides of the covers? I just saw a video where the guy just does the cover side. Hmm.
I have been waiting for this video. Thank you so much. Looking forward to the complete video
De Caddy hell ya me too
I really enjoy these videos, they are clear and understandable and a great help as as I am doing aground up resto on my cl450 thanks again
Resting the engine on the head bolts was making me cringe.
Really looking forward to Pt. 2!!
In Clymer manual it says “be careful. It to damage oil seal pressed into case”. Not seeing that here. Thoughts?
Excellent detail. Thanks so much! Getting ready to tear down my CB500T to fix the tranny. Looking forward to the top-end build. Cheers
Great video guys! Im looking forward to see how you do the cam lobes/cam chain installation.
Is this a black bomber engine? If not, is there anything different I should know about?
How can a watch someone reconnect the cam chain. I’ve done it but found it very difficult. Getting the cam shafts, the cam followers and crank shaft all in the right place to reconnect the cam chain is the hardest part of working on these engines
Really looking forward to the rebuild pt2
I hope you saw pt. 2 is now live!
@@Common-motor thank`s just what I needed :)
I was sure the OEM cam chain was continuous (no joining link) and had to be installed onto the crank before that in turn was installed.
You could get one with a rivet type joining link
Thanks for the really useful video. I'd like to strip and rebuild my 500T someday and vapour blast the parts.
Was getting scared I was never going to see the conclusion of a build; so glad to see it’s still happening.
So 3 bond and NO gasket is what you end up with? Or is there never a gasket in this case?
everlasting1 three bond is what you need to seal the upper and lower crankcase halves.
@@Common-motor Or Yama Bond ( by Yamaha) is what I used in 1977.
Make you use a proper JIS screw driver
Why didn't you put the cam chain in first while putting the crankshaft in ?
Also do not put oil on bolts that go into blind holes , You can hydro lock and blow the case out
Why would you apply threebond to the 2 rubber oil seals? Is that really needed? Shouldn't an oil seal close the engine without a liquid sealing?
The extra threebond insurance of it has paid off in the past.
CRAZY it is ...to many pieces have to take time :) thahks

What kind of three bond are you guys using?

eBay will be the best place for used parts
What is the process you guys use for cleaning engine parts? ALL of your parts always look brand new! Let us know!!!!!
Bick5402 vapor blasting

No part 2 huh?
How to set cb 125 twin bike engine timing setting
Do you have a rebuild part 2?

can i buy rehab cb 450 if okey how much, thanks

Thats what i thought he forgot to put first the timing chain before sealing it.

Hey Lee, sorry for the late response here but we do have a part two up on the channel now! Working on the part 3!
@@Common-motor Brilliant as I'm working on my engine now, looking forward to part 3. Thanks again boys.
