In this upload. I unbox the Akai Pro MPK249 midi keyboard controller. This is my very first keyboard and I'm very excited to get my feet wet in this new world of creating music.

Nice pads and knobs, what i can say is good on this akai. (Keyboard rubbers going bad in a couple of years, making keys unplayable, using akai as a master keys with another keys is a nightmare, akai can control only one midi channel at a time, -unbelievable ). Otherwise for small studio its exactable.

As long as the MacBook Air's usb port can support power over the usb port then I think you can power the keyboard without a plug

I saw one at a thrift shop, it's power button was broken, I tried to connect it through usb cable on my laptop, didn't turned on but the last octave keys were giving response, does that mean I have to connect it to a my pc in order to turn it on properly?

I think this board works way better with Abelton Live than it does with FL. Not saying that it does not work with FL, but the board connects faster in Abelton.

@@805coastlife9 That same thing happen to one of my friends. Try updating the laptops audio driver, or you might have to get a USB sound card, that worked for him. They're all over Amazon, and they are not expensive. I'll leave a link to some in the description.

Have tried a different USB cable? Try updating windows. Sometimes your missing some drivers needed to run the MPK249. Remember that your USB port had to support power over the cable to power the MPK249.
@@MichaelHurdleStudio Terns out that swapping the USB over to a different port made it work, and now works in both ports and Reason Mapping works, keys, pads, play rec, stop all functions good.

Not really. I have no clue how to play the piano and I made some dope ass beats. Your going to use the drum pads mostly until you graduate to the keys. Now I just use the keys for hi to lo notes. Hey David. Would you believe that keyboard is still working great! I wish I could play the keyboard more seriously, but I've been working like a mad man these day's. Once I get my ish together I have to make time to get back into the MPK. I love this keyboard and I would get it if I were you bro. It should be cheaper now. It's a great investment.

No latency issues with usb? I have the same board, can't get it to respond quickly on cakewalk.
Have you tried using a faster USB port? What's the speed of your USB port? Try using USB 3.0 or higher. Are you using Windows or Mac? If you use Windows try the steps at 4:13 in to this video. Let me know if that helped.

no problem dude. Do you have a USB port on your mac? If you do then use the USB cord that came with the keyboard. If you don't have one, it's the one you use on a printer! After that, you might have to visit Akai and download the Mac drivers for the keyboard to work. Did you try any of those?

Hey bro, quick question. You have a folder called my packs, then a bunch of instruments and drums to assign to the drum pads. Did all those sound packs come with the mpk or where did you get all your drum and dub packs for your pads?
Good question. The sounds did not come with the MPK. I got most of those sound loops from www.looperman.com/ it's free and some of them sound really good. I went crazy downloading loops lol.
Even the usb cable is 3ft who the heck uses a 3ft usb cable even 6ft is too small now... but I got mine open box for 350 and traded in some gear and paid 150 out of pocket
Can this work on other platforms
Yes, as long as the midi keyboard can communicate with the platform that it's on. It even works on a Mac I heard.

Hello, my friend. Thankx great review. Did you produced any music that the public can listen to, and if so, where? I was wondering and this might sound dumb, im new to midi and stuff. But, if there a way to import audio track that I creates to this keyboard ? full audio Wave tracks,( like a song playing from a MP3 player). I know those unit called sequencer that can do. But when i play live, I cant have a laptop with me. I Just need a pad like the one on MPK and stop/play the track. thank you
Thank you for the wonderful comment bro. Yes as funny as this may sound, I produce kids songs for youtube. when I brought the MPK249 I never thought that I would be making abc songs and 123 rhymes. I haven't uploaded any tracks to this channel because of my sometime adult content so I had to sign a agreement that I can't share any of the songs, But I've been working hard on a few of my personal tracks that I'll share with you guys as soon as it's final. Yes you can import your own tracks to the keyboard using software. I use FL Studio 12. You can even record your own voice and use it on the keyboard as well. There are so much you can do with the mpk249. Sorry I took so long to reply to you. I was really busy this weekend.

Hey how easy is it to change the midi channel on the fly? on arturia producs you just have to press SHIFT + C1 for example to switch to Channel 1, C#1 for channel 2 etc... is menu diving involved here? Also, would you consider it beeing robust enough to take it to a gig?
Very good question. I know there are a bunch of programmable buttons that you can add keyboard commands to, so Yes you can change the midi channel on the fly. As far as taking it to a gig with you, It's nice and lightweight, it won't drain your laptop when powered on.
I'm a novice and considering buying the 249/261, so this video was very helpful -- thanks for that. I'm annoyed that I had to go and get earbuds to listen to it, though, because there's a lot of cursing in the video, and my kids were in the room. To the maker of this video, I might respectfully suggest that you try to create the same energy and comedy without saying fuck and shit; it's harder for some people, but worth it for that small segment of viewers who might be watching the video on a computer speaker and would prefer their kids not hear that.
I understand bro. I was so happy when I made this video. I never thought people would play this video in front of kids! In my current videos I do swear, but this time I put beeps sounds to block out the curse's . It's the best I can do for the content I put out now. now that its a year later, how is the keyboard treating you?
One year later, This keyboard has treated me well. I've learned so much having this keyboard as my first. I love the drum pads to make quick beats, and now I want to take music making to the next level, so I'm learning how to play the piano so that I can create better sounding music. The only downside that I see so far is that I wish I got the keyboard with more keys, it helps when you want to hit those high notes and run out of keys and you have to manually drop the notes with the mouse. It saves mad time.
Do you need to connect this to a speaker? And how.
You can connect this keyboard to a speaker if you wanted. Your speakers have to be able to connect to the midi port in the back of the keyboard. You can get a converter if you have an older speaker. I've connected a pair of closed ear headphones to this keyboard so that I don't disturb anyone in the room with me when I'm playing.
can the akai mpk249 work by itself when not hooked up to a computer/daw?
As a matter of fact you can still use it without a PC but your going to be very limited. It was more designed to be a midi keyboard. it works so much better when your connected to a computer.

How are you connecting the keyboard? PC? Did you install the drivers for the mixer?
I was able to select MPK249 for the control surface, but not for input or output. Input is greyed out and output does not show MPK249. Any suggestions?
What version of FL Studio are you using?
I am using Ableton LIve Lite--I actually got it plugged in and configured on my control surface, input, and output. However, I cannot get sound from pressing any keys. I can see some identifier on the track that it is registering when I play a key on the keyboard, but no sound comes out of my laptop speaks. First time Ableton user, so I may have missed a step as simple as opening a new track. I did go to File->New set (or Live set, I am away from my other computer) with no results as well.. Thanks for any info!
Have you tried setting the MPK249's setting to Ableton LIve Lite in the menu dial? Check out this video. It might give you some help. It's FL, but it's a good start. I could totally see you making the switch to Fl if this keeps up. I was also having issue as well.
I did, it is currently set to Preset: 1 LiveLite

Here are a few things to try first. Make sure you have all the latest updates for windows. Try another USB cable just to make sure it's not the cable. Try a different USB port.

Do you see any lights when you turn the mpk on? If not then you may not be getting any power to the keyboard. Have you tried connecting the mpk to another Mac or PC to see if anything is different?
Yeah all the lights and stuff come on. And I haven't connected it to another laptop yet, but I will try that today and let you know what happens.
Seems like your getting power, but no handshake between the keyboard and the PC. Yeah man, let me know. I'll help you out best I could.
So I just hooked it up to a mac and the computer recognized that a keyboard was connected to it. It gave me a notification saying that the keyboard can't be identified, but it is acknowledging the fact that a keyboard is in the computer.

I feel you. Try switching out the usb cable! funny as that might sound, the usb cable might not be able to send data through the cable! Also, run windows update if you haven't let me know if any of those helped.
