@@MarieMcWilliams I am surprised you don't mention the black and white film adaptation starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, directed by Robert Wise. It was titled THE HAUNTING and was generally very faithful.
Loved the book and loved the adaptation. It is a lovely touch the eldest daughter is named "Shirley" (for Shirley Jackson) and the eldest brother is a horror writer named "Stephen." Likewise Nell's therapist was named Dr. Montague (and was played by Russ Tamblyn, who played Luke in the original Robert Wise adaptation starring Julie Harris). Have also watched numerous "reaction" videos of those watching the series, and how audience members became so emotionally invested in this family. Including of course the way the five children echo the so-called five stages of grief: Stephan = Denial, Shirley = Anger, Theodora = Bargaining, Luke = Depression, Nell = Acceptance.
You keep saying the reason the show was successful was because they used the points from the book. I think Mike is next level with taking a story that has been recreated way too many times and flipping it on his head. He really deserves that “visionary mind” in the promo for Bly Manor! All good book to show adaptations are character driven and we were really invested and curious about this family. Making us feel safe seeing them as adults yet excited and scared about what happens next. I am very excited to see him very loosely adapt “The Turn of the Screw” while using his other work that hasn’t been on screen. I’m here for the ride!
I meant it was successful as an ADAPTATION because it took those elements of the book if that makes sense? This is book vs show rather than a review of either. He was able to capture the atmosphere, that impending sense of dread, the themes but in a completely original way so it was a perfect adaptation! I'm so excited for Turn of the Screw, I have no doubt it will be just as good
Actually Theodora was one of the siblings. Olivia was the mother. Did you know (and Mike Flanagan confirmed this) that the Crain siblings represented the five stages of grief? Stephen: denial; Shirley: anger; Theodora: bargaining; Luke: depression; Nell: acceptance.
A lot of people think the ending of The Haunting of Hill House series was a bit too neat of an ending. However if you follow the clues (especially concerning the color red) you may realize there is the possibility that they never actually escaped the room with the red door.
Shirley Jackson’s fantastic book is wonderfully adept at slowly ratcheting up the level of unease and the impending sense of doom Doesn’t bother me at all that the ending was ‘unresolved’ and it stayed longer in the memory as a result The TV series I enjoyed quite a lot and the themes similar as you say Good adaptions; Much easier to list poor adaptions, I could do that for days The recent Punisher series x2 on Netflix pretty damn good, although the Garth Ennis Marvel Max books are better and much more violent I’ll have a think 🧐
I was very impressed with my friend who made this thumbnail for me! Lol the book is so so different but it somehow is so true to the book anyway...it's a great read! I really recommend it
Omg the book is so good! I thoroughly recommend it! It's my November read for my #gothichorrorreadalong on my Instagram and another book of hers, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is the April read if you fancy joining in? I find readalongs great motivation!
So informative, working on a project myself and this helped to sort out what is original to Netflix, seriously love your channel keep it up you gained a new fan!
I really enjoyed the Netlfix series and I'm almost afraid the book won't be as good, but at the same time, I've heard a lot of good things about the book. lol. I am conflicted.
Yes I've seen it, not the best movie tbh lol but it is truer to the book in story but not in atmosphere or suspense or horror. I think the series did much better at that
I loved both the book and the Netflix TV series and think that both are masterpieces of their respective formats and of the horror genre. Marie, I beg of you to please forget about the adaptation with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta Jones and seek out the 1963 original.
I enjoyed the book and the original black and white film over the Netflix series. Netflix relied too much on cheap jumpscares and totally removed the best element and shoehorned the people as a family. Even the 90's movie seemed more in tune with the original book and that was one of the worst adaptations, lol. I will say this for the Netflix movies, at least they had the same names as the original characters, lol.
I really enjoyed the series and the book and just hope someday we will have a fully loyal adaption.
A loyal adaptation would be cool I'll admit. Have you seen the we have always lived in the castle adaptation? It's very close and very well done

We do have a loyal adaption it's from 1963 you should watch it it's still holds up today

I thought it was an exceptional adaptation!
I haven't read the book but I will do :) I have seen the TV series and it is one of my all time favourites absolutely loved it :)
Mine too!! You should totally read the book then...it's amazing!

No I didn't know that!! I can completely see it though! And oops, mixing up my name's lol

Shirley Jackson is one of my all time fsvs

Yes I've read that theory, that they are still trapped there but I like the neat, happy ending! Lol
