It spells, "Hudson" as in Hudsonsoft the company that made the original Super Mario Bros. Special and also the creators of the PC Engine/Turbografx 16

The clutch save with the koopa makes you realize that the first Super Mario Bros is held together with duct tape

It's also very apparent in speedruns when they run straight through Piranha Plant's jaws. There's also a trick where you can bounce on Koopas from below with a very specific set-up. But the basic momentum mechanics hold up pretty well which is why it's so groundbreaking.

*Here’s some info on this. This is a
NES remake of “Super Mario Bros. Special,” which was made by Hudson on the NEC-PC 88 and Sharp X1. Both sucked and had low quality. They had new enemies, like the barrels, sidesteppers, fighter flies, and icicles. Some new items were the Hudson Bee (8000 points), hammer (from Donkey Kong), wing (temporarily fly{swim in air}), and clock (+100 seconds). One port went black and to the next section of the level, and the other used Legend of Zelda scrolling. The physics were wonky, and the music was off. This NES version, while unofficial, is THE definitive way to play Super Mario Bros. Special.*

I miss Super Mario Bros. 35 as well. Also, pretty much all of the new goodies are in hidden blocks, like those hammers you found. I believe other hidden items you can find include a wing that lets you "swim" through the air for a short time, a clock that adds 100 seconds to the timer, an "atom" that defeats all on-screen enemies (like SMB35's POW Block does), and a Hudson Bee worth 8000 points.

It’a a tough one.
On a technical perspective, I’d say Mario 3 is the more impressive game for the system it released on because of how ahead of it’s time it feels with it’s game physics and style.
Although overall, I’d say I found more enjoyment and nostalgia from Mario World since I played it on my GBA.
I also have a soft spot for New Super Mario Wii

Just what i needed , my dose of BTG. Thank you. Loved it. Some pure Sky Fox moments..from a class player. The game looks great and the colours brighter, some of the level lay outs were cool, love the idea they added new power ups.

So you missed the wing that let's you swim (fly) in the overworld.
18:40 100% certified OCD. I will pause the timer whenever possible and hunt every coin, power up, enemy and block (both standard and question mark). Gave up candy six month's ago. Every six months, I give up one sweet. A year ago it was soda, six months ago it was candy, this month is is pie. Now when I did eat candy, my favorite as a kid was M&M's but they have since changed the formula so it changed to 3 Musketeers in my teen years. Late in my candy eating days, I did favor the Mr. Goodbars

8:20 The SHARP system the game originally released on had a shorter display resolution than the NES, so the levels had to be one block shorter. Also pretty sure there was a wing in world 2 lol

Mario 3 and World are equal to me. World is more sentimental because I owned it. But my dad's friend had three and my uncle did.
As games, not considering the sentimental value, they really balance eachother out.
3 has more powerups, and you can store powerups and play map minigames.
World has a map where you can revisit levels, a star hub and special world.. And a pallete and sprite swap. Longer levels. Less map themes.
I can't choose between them.

From this video I learned most of the challenge of Super Mario Special came from the eye bleeding colors and the screen transitioning because the levels are way easy.

I've played these levels in a Super Mario Bros. Special map pack thingi for a flash game, as opposed to a ROM hack. From everything I can tell about that version, and this version, is that they're 1:1 recreations of the original Super Mario Bros. Special (except with scrolling), so that's why the new power-ups and enemies were so sparse, is cuz that's how it was in the original game.
Nice playthrough, though! To answer your questions within the video:
1. Super Mario Bros. 2 (aka Super Mario USA) is my favorite Mario game, as unorthodox as that choice might be.
2. I have no preference between 2D and 3D Mario games.
3. I'm not big on candy, but when I do get the craving I tend to favor things that are sour as opposed to sweet.

My favorite type of candy is any combination of chocolate with mint or peanut butter. I've also got an abnormal fondness for candies loaded with blue food dye regardless of which fruit they're trying to pretend to be and for coffee flavored candies.

I remember that this was one of the level sets available in Super Mario Bros. Crossover and I enjoyed it quite a lot because of how insanely obscure it is
I’d say its just as good as SMB1
I remember selecting it with one of the other game skins and playing as blaster master tank which made it feel like I was playing a completely new game I'd never played before instead of a Mario hack of some kind
Enemies not found in the original game include: Sidestepper, Fighter Fly, Icicle, Fireball and Barrel
Powerups and items not found in the original game include: Hammer, Wing, Clock, Hachisuke and Lucky Star
My heart was pumping at 8-4, really enjoyed this hack.

@@squidno4902 Not really, there are clouds like that (and bushes) in SMBS that you can see in full.
World 4-4…the bricks that appear before the bridge…they spell out “HUDSON”. Hudson Soft was a subsidiary of NEC…and Super Mario Special was made for the NEC PC line :-)

My favorite 2d Mario game is definitely New Super Mario Bros. for the DS. It’s not the one I think is the best, but it’s definitely my favorite, being the first one I owned and really played, the nostalgia is deep. I also think it’s a really good game in general.

The Game Boy Advance version of "Super Mario Bros. 3" is my favorite, although I also love "Super Mario Land 2" and "Super Mario World" a lot. To be fair, I love all standard 2D Mario games.

Yep, watching the whole thing ofc! Favourite candy for me is european milk chocolate, tried american chocolate once, was way too acid'y for my taste, learned there is a difference in how it's produced... 🤷🏼♂️ Super Mario Bros 3 will always be my favourite, being a old school retro gamer (primarily C64/Amiga 500 🤷🏼♂️) I could never wrap my head much around newer 3D games with old 2D heroes, platform sidescrollers, yes please and thank you!

How you lived with the red koopa in the beginning of the vid: One thing I learned in speedrunning tutorials is that as long as Mario is moving down even just slightly, he bounces off of enemies no matter where he hits them.

Taking damage in Super Mario Bros is such a bummer. Each level usually only has one power-up so you need to play through 2 levels if you want to get the fire flower back.

Favorite 2d Mario? Probably Diagonal Mario? I really don't have a favorite, but every time I play Mario 1, I am reminded of the 8 year old me playing it for the first time, without all of the popularity or fandom behind it. To me, at that age, it was just a new game, and it was hard, and it was so much fun.
