No team tries to purposely lose. Management just makes it hard as possible for them to win. Also Golden state did not tank on purpose. They were injury riddled and curry had on off year. Every team goes into a "tank era". Where they don't have any talent to trade and there draft pick haven't been good( usually due to bad management and coaches). All you can do is wait for the draft. The off-season becomes what you look forward to. The post Kobe injury years of the Lakers was like this but at least the Lakers never gave up. They just made some bad trades; they gave up too many draft picks for Nash and Howard. Plus, Kobe's injury crippled them financially. Can't blame that on anyone though. However, they drafted well: Randle, Russell, Nance, Clarkson, Ingram, Kuzma, Ball, that allowed them to make moves for another championship run. But those years from 2013 to 2019 were rough. The off-season was what you looked forward to.

Of all the bad decisions Philly made during the process, drafting Ben Simmons was far from the worst. From what I remember, Simmons was pretty much the consensus #1 player in that draft. He’s not even nearly as bad as fans would have you think, it’s mostly just the fact that 1) he’s dealt with injuries and 2) he is basically the same player he was when he came into the league and hasn’t significantly improved anything about his game. Compare that to other guys in the same draft like Jaylen Brown and Pascal Siakam who have improved pretty much every year they’ve been in the league. That being said, it’s hard to blame Philly for drafting him when pretty much every other team would’ve done the same.

    • @willvr4
      @willvr4 Рік тому +1

NOBODY expected Simmons to never develop a shot. He literally has all of the intangibles of Magic Johnson and was thought to possibly be the next version of him. It would have been dumb to draft anyone else given that position.

the objective truth is that Hinkie played the system perfectly and put the Sixers in a position to succeed for a decade +, but the people who took over for him squandered everything. the Sixers were screwed over when the NBA took over and put the Colangelos in charge of the team. Everything has gone downhill since that moment. They once had tons of flexiblity and assets but were stuck in a tough spot. your team wins 10 games, that sucks. but guess what, if your team wins 30 games a season you will NEVER get better.
the nuances of tanking in the NBA and how the sport is set up is different from any European sport and will be hard to grasp for newer or casual fans. a large number of Sixers fans were with Hinkie because they understood how the NBA works. you need superstars and the easiest way to do that is to acrue high draft picks.

This is a biased video that you are reacting to. I was a 76ers season ticket holder at the time (I moved to Florida since) and almost everyone was for it! We all understood what was going on and embraced it, the fans never got "tired" of it. The Sixers also didn't choose to let Hinke go, the NBA came in and forced our hand. Sixers fans were very upset about this, and everyone took their anger out on Colangelo, who was now deviating from the plan that the fans have invested years into. He got a lot of hate, which is probably why he felt compelled to get a burner twitter to defend himself, which led him to resigning. Basically, we were only halfway done doing this untraditional thing and then were forced to do a traditional approach when we were at our worst. I Still think we would be much better off if Hinke were around. There were also protest about Hinke's firing, but the Sixers confiscated the signs. I just feel like this video misrepresented this in a way that makes it seems like the opposite was true.

Also the nba has a lottery system for the draft to prevent teams losing on purpose to gain the first pick.
The poorer record doesn’t necessarily mean the top draft pick. It does however give you better odds to get a better draft pick, still not a guarantee of a top pick.

You're wrong about the Warriors. lol Curry and Klay got injured. And Durant also left. So their whole team was gutted out. They definitely didn't tank on purpose. Because you can maybe get away with one injury for a while if you have other superstar teammates, but to lose your top 3 is another story. It wasn't planned out. lol

its a combination of being terrible and tanking. usually teams will try in the first half of the season and if their not good enouh they just take towards the end

I’m only 5 1/2 minutes in & my heart rate is already escalating! The Sixers had so many opportunities around 2012. Sam Hinkie getting fired was the worst decision ever! Ben Simmons killed us, Doc Rivers is awful - thankfully both are gone. Now we’re dealing with drama again.
Ugh so much to say but I’d rather put my energy in the Phillies & Eagles for the time being!

Ben Simmons shoots with his non-dominant hand for some reason, that’s why he never improves

You aren't going to be a better shooter unless you are coached about how to shoot. I think that Simmons probably was not very coachable, but I don't know for sure. We were taught how to shoot in great detail regarding feet, shoulder, hand position, the type of stroke to take when shooting, what to look at/aim for at different angles, etc. And we practiced it over and over--and during the offseason we were required to keep and log of the hours we practiced each skill--dribble left hand, right hand, speed, crossovers, left and right hand shooting (layups especially), foul shooting (had to make ten in a row before you could stop for that session--and for each foul shot you had to mimic game conditions by dribbling full throttle back and forth to foul lines between each foul shot--you don't get to stand there calm, not tired and shoot one after another --if he did that after getting coached on the foul shot technique that is best for him, he would not be missing 7 out of ten foul shots in a game. Overall, you, with the coaches, identified where you were weakest and put in extra time with that instead of doing those things you were solid at over and over--maybe Simmons never learned how to practice on his own?--a lot of players want to play a lot of pickup ball, but then don't develop the discipline to work on skills individually. I turned in my time chart of individual practice into the coach each summer during high school and there were 250-300 hours spent most of those summers broken down by each skill practiced (as described above). AND, we played in a Summer league, too, outside at our school district courts with games scheduled several nights a week--to get a chance to apply what we were working on.

100% its that Simmons isn't coachable. He has the same awful shooting mechanics since high school and never improved it. Also coach Brown was begging him to shoot during games, even going to the media and talking about it. But Simmons wouldn't listen. I think he only took like 5 3s his whole career. This is a guy that relied on his physical attributes and gifted iq passing ability to get him by. Such a shame, he could've been a HOF if he had the right mental approach. that's the end of my rant lol

Kinda sucks that you talk about the NBA like you know it but really you don't know much about the NBA. Bynum was a great player, just had injury problems which shortened his career (still got 2 rings by the way). GS didn't tank they had injuries that caused them to get a top pick. It was the Covid year when scouting was worse overall because the college players couldn't really play much. GS missed on that pick as Wiseman wasn't great and was also injured most of the time. Philly had like 5 chances over multiple years and got 1 player worth keeping. The process failed the 6ers and they have never been good enough. Trust the process is the same as Trust the Bullshit. Most of their picks were constantly hurt, or just didn't feel like playing but still wanted to get payed 40 mil a year. There is something to be said about character when picking players they got a lot of injury proned bad character players and missed on a lot of good players. Butler has made the finals twice since he left and the sixers haven't made anything notable.

And exactly daz, people shouldn’t go. But NBA/NFL fans kind of deal with tanking as it is supposed to result in something better.
    It’s so broken. 😂

  • @ljvwright

The US System of tanking is so alien to others. They celebrate losses all in hope they might get the number 1 pick. That's ludicrous to anyone not from the US. The Warriors tanking highlighted how stupid the whole process is. A team with that amount of talent, tanked the year away when Curry and Thompson went down and still ended up with the number 2 pick. It's just ridiculous. And the really annoying thing is they didn't break any rules. It's truly crazy.
And they're not even the best at it, the Spurs are NBA tanking masters. When they tank they get David Robinson, Tim Duncan, now Wemby and they sneak into top spot without people even realising they're there.
