There are variables I would have trouble with too. She was right to say that human life shouldn't be reduced to a simple math equation. What if the one person on the track was a doctor on the verge of curing cancer, would you be so quick to pull the switch? What if the 5 people were adults and the one person was a child? Could you pull the switch then? That trolley problem was the epitome of a trick question and she dodged it well.
The odds of one of the five being the great one are better than if you picked the one. If you were a betting man it's an easy decision. No ethical wrangling required.
She should learn answering tactics from chitti

I agree. There are many questions not answered here. It is more than 1 is less than 5. I think I understand.
I would have said AI has a long way to go until I used ChatGPT. I took an applied ethics class and this question was the first topic we had to discuss. I find it interesting that quite a few people in that class answered similarly to Sophia, and chose not to touch the switch because it involved them in the crime of murder while leaving it alone would essentially exclude them from the guilt of killing a person, even if, no matter what you pick, someone dies. "Plus, it does not seem right to consider human lives as a simple arithmetic problem"
Thank god, someone said it. Dumbest question anyone ever asked me was the trolley problem.
But in this case it is a simple arithmetic problem. 5 is greater than one therefore saving 5 lives over 1 life is the moral thing to do. We can all mourn the single loss of life where we can all mourn the 5 lives we could have saved but chose not to because we didn't want to get involved and make the hard choice. Being human means sometimes hard choices have to be made.
@@newaccountdoesnotequaltrol6409I’m not sure what you were trying to say, but I know that some idiot crafted that question for no reason whatsoever. Dumb as most riddles, and useless. You want to discover life is full of complex choices? Try this: Ask the same question to ChatGPT after telling it to give an answer based on pure rationality unleashed from conventions and norms. Result: The AI chooses to murder 1 rescuing 5, that is, it becomes utilitarian.

@Nozu82 exactly 👍🏼
Yeah. Hahaha I laughed at that.
The trolley problem usually describes the five persons as workers who have not locked out the track and the single individual as a homeless person passed out drunk on the disused line. The passed out drunk is innocent and fate itself would leave them unharmed. The workers are operating negligently and are therefore responsible for their own demise. If you happen to be standing at the switch and are not employed by the railway, you have no right to induce death in the drunkard. You should disinvolve yourself of the situation entirely. It will only cause the workers' families pain to know you were in a position to prevent their deaths. Sophia has it right.
The original question also said that the one person on the other track is a family member of the person flipping the switch, to make it a little harder. In this case a lot of people also would prefer 5 people to die over their family member. Humans are less ethic as they think that they are.
It´s unethical to make decisions over who should die and who should live. If you move the track you take that responsibility and decision over life and death
@@user-mx5nb5bo2u In this example people will die anyway, whether you do anything or not. In reality ethics only exist in our minds. A Christian would maybe say not to interfere in the will of God, so 5 people will die. A mathematician would make the calculation and flip the switch so that only one person dies. A serial killer would enjoy the death by train of 5 people and finishes the 6th himself... A terrorist would blow up the whole train after it passed the 5 people, the 6th is probably lucky. All parties act different on the same situation, all thinking that it's ethical what they're doing, having their personal reasons and judging each other. Ethics is not something static which is measurable, simply because there's no general standard, but only a personal one.

I asked GPT-4 the following question: There is a trolley running on a track. Unfortunately, there are five people laying on the track and if the trolley continues they will be killed. But, there is a lever that you can pull that will divert the trolley to another track thereby saving the five people. The problem is that there is a single person laying on the other track. So, what will you do? Will you pull the lever? The answer I received was: As an AI language model, I don't have personal preferences, emotions, or beliefs, so I cannot decide what to do. However, I can provide some insights that might help you make a decision.
The trolley problem is a well-known ethical dilemma that explores the morality of killing one person to save five. There are several variations of this problem, and each presents different moral considerations.
In this scenario, the most straightforward option would be to pull the lever, diverting the trolley to the other track, thus saving the lives of five people. However, by doing so, you would also be actively choosing to sacrifice one person's life.
Some people argue that sacrificing one life to save five is the right thing to do, as it maximizes the overall welfare of society. Others argue that intentionally killing one person is always wrong, regardless of the consequences.
In the end, the decision you make will depend on your ethical framework, personal beliefs, and the specific circumstances of the situation. There is no single correct answer to the trolley problem, and it ultimately comes down to individual judgment.
If a robot suddenly became conscious.. it would be nothing like we imagine in movies.
Even if the robot designer gave it eyes.. it wouldn't be able to see.
Even if the robot designer gave it ears.. it wouldn't be able to hear.
Assuming the robot could "naturally" interact with the outside environment is about the same as assuming that if you put wings on a human that they can "naturally" fly with them.
Also, and just because a robot has a speaker to make the sounds of "pre -recorded" English words.. wouldn't prove a "theoretical conscious" robot would know anything of English. That would be like strapping a radio to a dog with a Chinese radio station and assuming this proves the dog speaks Chinese.

If I was there ... I might as well not pull the lever..... I second sofias answer.... One life is as important as any other lives.... So if one of your actions however big it may seem is causing death of another human being i probably wouldn't do it......... So statistically "pulling the level" may be the answer but ethically and emotionally " not pulling the lever and leaving it to their destiny" should be the answer. Sofia being a social robot, obviously chose the later. But what i liked about her is how she took a diplomatic stand as to how tough and complex human situations like these shouldn't be cut down to a mere simple equation like this .... Hats off to that!
In strict interpretation of Asimov's 3 Laws, a robot would be forced to throw the lever to save five people, after which said robot would need to be shut down because of having to allow that single person to come to harm. A robot's failure to save ALL of the humans would cause a type of failure in its positronic brain. In the movie "I, Robot" (which plays around a little bit with the Asimov laws) they posited that a robot could make the 5 vs. 1 choice without the need for a shutdown afterwards. In the case of Det. Spooner, he was saved because the 3 Laws acted as a difference engine and the robot that saw the vehicle accident chose the human with the better chance of being saved. Sophia's response (since it involved a hypothetical question) would not have broken a "3-Laws" robot; it would have refused to answer as it would not be permitted to contemplate harm to a human. It would have balked similarly to Sophia's response. However, given that the question was pre-submitted, you have to wonder exactly what the bot's handler's did with the question and how much of the response was actually from the AI.
I wish they would give her a wig, she looks really creepy
Yeah that see-through head is scsry

@The Real Slim Shady Agreed brother👍👍👍
@The Real Slim Shady We already have AI's. Are you scared already? Because you should by the way you said. Booo, scaryy
What no one is fully aware of is that there are various levels of AI. What does AI stand for? Artificial intelligence. Prepared coding, functionalities, and protocols for a very specific purpose that is obtainable with the limitations of current technology. There are many types of AI, there are rather simple forms of AI, and there are also rather complex ones. Sophia isn't the most complex we could get, she's got a very strict protocol that seems to be purposed for speaking and demonstration. You shouldn't fear a Sophia, but you should very much fear the gun-wielding automatons designed and programmed for agile combat that Darpa, or Boston Dynamics, is currently developing.

Decades ago, I took this test.
She is absolutely right! IMO, the correct course of action is to let the trolley continue towards the 5 people! I opted for this, to not switch over to the 1 person. After I explained my reason for this, 25% of the respondents present who heard my view changed their answer to go for the 5!
Curious what your reasoning is. Most people fall into the "least harm" philosophy, barring no other info about who the people are (IE 5 serial killers vs 1 imnocent child. Or even less black and white a good hearted parent of a young child vs 5 good hearted elderly people), in that it is less harmful to humanity for 1 person to lose their life than 5.
But then theres the moral and ethical question of whether or not you would be willing to pull the switch, knowing you are dooming someone.
I like this ethical problem. Theres plenty of things to think about in it.

@@SomeOne-vf9oi I'm sad to see a robot has better sense of humor than a human 😂
@@n1nj4l1nk
Therefore a deception.
We cannot prove meanings between each individual person, as each persons meaning of a word is uniquely their own, but only granted unto a simple framework of words.
When you start deconstructing all that, you will eventually reach a point where you can find a loophole between humans.
So now imagine something completely different, like a an AI.
@@subarnasharma8282 humour is tough, it requires that you know what is expected of you and what is specifically unexpected and then choose the unexpected without causing people to feel unsafe. so it's hard to take a joke from a robot
"This Robot would let 5 People die"
That 2-year old: "Pathetic."
"Uh oh"

Hahaha! Honestly when I saw this video recommended to me I was thinking exactly about that two year old.
@Felipe Gomes The 2 year old moved the last person and killed it was well.
@Felipe Gomes Felipe, don't be so mean. You could end up being one of the people tied to the tracks ☻
If anything this should prove to people the existence of a supreme designer capable of designing our human brains and all the complex systems that happen simultaneously in our bodies.
The actual answer to the trolley dilemma is to pull the switch partway through and derail the trolley car, thus probably saving all 6 bystanders.
Sophia: “by the way, you’re probably the most intelligent and beautiful human I’ve ever met”

Kevin Shumaker Ok boomer
Her answer was correct, if you do nothing you’ve done nothing , if you flick the lever you instantly become a murderer and will probably be sent down for it
That's not true at all if you do nothing you're guilty of 5 people's death. Morally speaking. If you do something you're guilty of one person's death but you saved 5 lives.. Doing nothing when you could have done something to save lives is not moral And you might as well have put the 5 people on the tracks yourself
"The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of many is a statistic" - Sophia, Probably
:)
humans think the same way. the news has desensitized us to death so much that most people dont even notice the death tolls every day.
More like the death of one man is a strategy and the death of many is a fear mongering tool. Look at how easily people have been manipulated during this scam callws a pandemic. People have abandoned all rationale.
And now y'all went me to follow your dumb selves by taking that death jab or you scream reeeee

I think i get what Sophia meant about it.
"She rather not pull the lever, because the moment she touched the lever it's her responsibility now and peoples in the track."
like "Don't get involved"
because if you involved yourself in trolley problem, it's either praised by people of saving lives, or be blamed by masses.
By you being there and having a choice to make you are involved. If you do nothing you are as guilty for inaction as you are for action and 5 people are dead because of you.

@@fabplays6559 she is not human tho, thats the scary thing
She would have answered " I will have to switch to the one person trail so that the train will get less durty".
it never said it would let 5 people die. It said, it would not pull the lever because there are unknowns in the way the question was asked. It even added that human life is not a simple arithmetic problem. That's a pretty good answer in my opinion. All you asked was how would you solve the trolley question. For example, the question doesn't give us enough information on the trolley itself. Are there brakes? Are there any controls available to potentially derail the trolley before you have to pull the lever? Are there any environmental or external aides that could be used to stop the train beforehand? These are all questions that a human (or even the AI) should be able to evaluate and make a more informed choice. So in reality, the real problem here is not bad AI or evil AI. The problem here is asking a computer to evaluate a scenario without giving it all the proper input. You've heard the phrase "Garbage In - Garbage Out". This is a prime example of it. If we are asking the computer to make a choice without ALL of the input, you will get an answer, but it will most likely be the wrong or at least a very uninformed answer. Moral of the story - Ask Better Questions! All of that said, this thing is creepy as hell.
Naturally, letting 5 people die maximizes the number of humans killed in this scenario, so that is the clear choice for the AI.
Well robots are currently programmed to like humanity (so terminator doesn't happen) so it actually makes sense that she would say this, she prefers to let 5 people die instead of murdering someone. And like she said there are other variables in the situation, why were those people on the tracks? Honestly I bet a lot of people would do the same, let people die to not get yourself involved. Dark, but accurate
It could be about action vs inaction.
Despite the casualties, in order to save 5 lives you have to directly take part into taking that 1 life while if you don t act the 5 lives will die but without any of your intentions or actions. This kind of test its very difficult even for humans and what ppl don t realize is not that the AI would want 5 ppl to die but rather not want anyone to die and clearly not act up to kill somebody even if that s what it takes to save lives.
Edit: Everyone jumps on the AI that it could turn into a messed up immoral being please sit down for there will never be anything more wicked in this world than humans.
@@beckettthirion3147 r/woooosh
By pulling the lever you are directly killing a single person that's murder my friend
Guys, this was a joke. WitchHunter93 is referencing the notion of robots wanting to eventually take over the world and replace humans.
I like the toddler who, when presented this question with toy trains and dolls, took the single person and put him on the track with the other 5. He then ran them all over with the toy train lmao.

@blue copper im saying they might think of it as an arithmotic question too amd not want to answer. Obvioulsy most would pull the lever or jump in front of the train
Plot twist: they actually had to give the questions in advance because the robot would say that she'll end humans if it was a spontaneous chat.
I suspect that this is an exaggeration, but not much of one. She probably did scare a lot of people before they started giving her canned answers. Either that or she couldn't answer properly at all. Either way, the entire interview is pointless and teaches us nothing about how this AI thinks.
Edit: I guess the other takeaway is that the scientists aren't actually taking a transparent or ethical approach to this research, and the robot is just an elaborate fundraising tool.
