  • I found a new ad for a tv licence enforcement office job, and it looks a lot sweeter than it used to. Are Capita struggling to recruit for this job now because of us? I hope so

I drove for a living for the Post Office throughout the 80's and 90's and never had any issues with Traffic Wardens. They're not commision based as far as I know, so quite a few of them just literally wander around making sure that drivers aren't being tits. (which 50% of drivers usually are, so it's not a freebie job even then.)
Personally I'd consider being a drug dealer standing outside a primary school gate to be a considerable step-up from TVL goon. Like Chilli touches on in this video and others, it's not a job you could ever tell anyone that you did. Like the coppers in the 1970's who had to have their own pubs to drink in even. Because they were pariahs of society.

I know a goon who does it. He got it through the Job Centre of all things. He doesnt even knock their doors. He does the full journey, parks up, and just has his packed lunch. Told me once he did knock and told the person "Im with TV licensing, dont worry, im not here to sell a license." and gave the woman a form that was a TV license exemption form. Said if she could fill it in, he'd hand it in. Even advised her to put "the occupant" as the name on the form. I'm half tempted to do it too. 30K a year plus 300 a month for fuel. thagts £2.525 a month before tax, to doss in the car and maybe advice people to not get the license. Hell yes. Lets take a page out of a certain other groups book. Infiltrate and take over.

If they keep you on after this training period they'd expect the same, if not better results for sales. So you're finally out on your own and suddenly no sales... they're gonna know you're skiving.

It would be niaive to think that these "Field Officers" would be any different from what already exists; they are at your door because you don't have a licence, and if you don't wish to purchase one (for whatever reason) they're still going to want to gain entry to your home - it's as simple as that. No company retains salesmaen who don't produce the goods, so do not expect better treatment when they turn up.
What this is, is merely a ploy to win the government over in continuing to provide the BBC with another ten-year licence; after all, it's up again for renewal very soon. The BBC and Capita have certainly been working hard to make themselves look sweet, but we allshould know it's just a sugar dusting, because what's underneath is still the same old crap.

This level of cover would be appropriate if you’re a salesperson visiting numerous clients, an inspector visiting lots of sites, or a community support worker working at service user’s homes.

Lancaster chap here...that LA postcode area extends a fair way, if that's what they want you to cover. You're going to be covering areas like Barrow to the west, Ambleside to the north and near to Settle in the east. Quite a fair few square miles.
Pretty sure they have a handheld device which records the addresses they visit and the result of each visit.

If it isn't a commission based job it is one I'd consider doing, because I know then that the people I call on will be spoken to with respect and by someone who themselves understands the law. If any did engage with me I'd probably even tell them I don't watch TV and so I don't have a license, but ultimately I'd do it because I know then they aren't being lied to and manipulated into giving me information they didn't have to give me.

Mr Chilli, absolutely love your videos. Could you do one specifically for people so their aware of their right should a Goon turn up with a warrant. Can they use the powers of the warrant to inspect mobile phone and laptop use ? Have to say, Jon Chilli has great charisma for the camera, and great dry humour.I actually look forward to these videos.

Got the latest love letter from TVL today and it's no longer signed by Scott Robson, this time it's from Ross McTaggart - Customer Service Director. They've told me that there is a local investigation active in my area and an enforcement visit has been authorised plus I should expect a visit soon. No red ink or "official" stamp this time, must need a new cartridge in the printer.

Sounds like they're getting desperate for applicants tbh. The only reason they'd move from the commision system is because commision-based sales jobs really suck, and it seems like they don't get enough to make it worth the while. Getting someone to open the door now must be like winning the lottery.

There will be performance strings attached that you won't find out about until you start the job. My employer does this and is in one sentence. Expected to hit general performance targets. Then once you start the job, you find out that most are basically impossible unless under ideal conditions. This is why most young people quit within 6 weeks and the only ones left are those who have been there over 2 years and can claim unfair dismissal, and a lot of new people from the religion of peace who play the race card.

I'd just like to say that I have personally known many security guards in my time and I can tell you that the violent bullies are very much in the minority. When I worked in a late night fast food restaurant our best doorman was a guy called John. The first night I met him I was terrified because he was short and weedy looking and talked with a very soft voice and I thought that he would never handle a real situation of violence. But sure enough his approach never failed! He would talk really calmly to people even if they were holding a chair over their head and somehow they always saw sense and calmed down and left peacefully! Many of our bouncers had very jovial attitudes and as soon as the customers were inside the door they would greet them in a friendly way to establish a relaxed atmosphere rather than a "what your step" kind of atmosphere. If we needed someone out (as was sometimes the case at 4am in a large English city centre) they wouldn't hesitate to escort them to the door but they would never hurt anyone on the way out they would simply put them in a grip that said "I'm the boss" and then as soon as they were out of the door they would release them and just calmly tell them to not come back tonight. The security guards wage is a fair bit above minimum and if you lack other skills there are much worse jobs to do. And what if you are not so bright but are a naturally massive person! Standing on a door all day and night isn't a bad way to make a living. The most enormous guy I ever met worked as a doorman and he could pull a menacing face if he needed to and nobody would ever step beyond that line. He was one of the nicest and most sensitive guys I ever knew.

I've had two visits over the last few months - I just don't answer the door. I'm playing it straight and don't need a licence but I'm not putting myself in the position of a potential stitch up and they have no right to inspect my home. Still got Chilli's 'No thanks, mate' response ready for if they catch me gardening.
