    This is solid proof that Christopher Lee never gave a bad performance. In every movie he was in, he tried his best to work with what he had. He made bad films watchable and good films even better. What a legend. RIP.

    According to an interview with an animator for this film, Paul Gunson, nobody at Bevanfield saw this or Aladdin as anything more than cashing in on the Disney films, and that there were no line testers or checkers. Apparently, different staff members, such as secretaries, were given writing and producing work, many non animators, so no permanent senior members were there to learn from.
    Also, no rushes were checked before the final print was made. To make matters worse, the voice actors recorded to animation, not the other way around, so the director guessed the time for lip movements, and when the actors tried to match it up, it wasn't enough to match up, but rather than cut the extra space (again, cause it was the final print), the director would simply cut between lines in order to make the dialogue fit the animation, hence the awkward pauses.
    It was a mess.

      Okay, maybe I'm the only one, but I really appreciate this explanation of HOW this was so inept. Obviously I'm not familiar with the process of putting together an animated film, but I still feel like I could have fudged my way through a movie better than they did. Sounds like it was a matter of doing it all for as little $ as possible.

    He makes a confused face when introduced to Beauty and her sisters
    He stays away from Beauty until the last minute
    He plays piano
    He doesn't care when Beauty leaves the castle
    Nearly every scene he either looks like he's posing for a nude magazine or he's straight-up presenting

    What's honestly rather weird to me about the Bevanfield version (and the anime version with Maria, too), at least in comparison to the other versions that Phelous has reviewed so far, is that Beauty and her sisters have a much more functional and healthy relationship here. All the dysfunction seems to come from DuBleurgh and his insistence on trying to force Beauty to marry his cousin. And here I thought that Old Man was the worst Beauty's Father character (not counting his comedic value being off the charts.)
    Granted, it's gross that Lucinda and Prunella are actually _into_ getting it on with Renart in place of Beauty, but at least the sisters otherwise have a better family dynamic than all the ones that paint the extra siblings as the ugly stepsisters 2: Electric Boogaloo. I think it's actually a bit more interesting to me to see the siblings getting along better than the title character and her father.
    Remember, kiddies. Incest is not wincest.

    Honestly, I think Beavenfield might be worse than Dingo. Dingo at least seems like they're on a real small budget and had a voiced narrator. Not to mention they seemed to of dubbed the movies with their own cast, despite English not being their first language. Beavenfield doesn't really have the excuse of a bad budget if they managed to get the decently sized cast that they had for this film. Not to mention the random cuts and having text on the screen describe what happened(At least Dingo would have some stock footage and a narrator. Beavenfield clearly had the scenes animated, but they forgot to voice anything for some reason.)
    Hell, I'd say Dingo films are more fun to watch then this flick. Dingo's movies are just so hilariously incompetent, tone deft, and stupid you can't help but laugh. This film just seemed like such a dull, slow drag that manages to feel way worse than any of the previous Beauty and the Beast knockoffs.
    Also, that frog that kept popping up is gonna be a reoccurring thing in their movies, isn't it?

    • @rhett8-u1n
      @rhett8-u1n 7 років тому +64

      It makes me think this would be something Dingo would do if they had a bigger budget and ambition. Kinda like Goodtimes did with Rudolph; releasing something on the big screen that only looks like a slightly better TV special. Or in this case, going from ms paint quality to storyboard test quality.

    Bee Movie 2: Beauty and the Bee
    Years after the events of the first movie, Vanessa Bloom decides to confess her love for Barry. Barry accepts, having held in similar feelings for her. Despite a bee and human marriage being unorthodox, the priest is willing to try something new. Ken is invited to attend, but he is still baffled that his fiance wanted to get together with a bee and sad about being rejected. The rest of the movie focuses on Ken's crippling depression. He ponders the meaning of life and questions why yogurt nights are as difficult as they are. Two bees, named Christopher Bee and Bee Bradley Baker, acting as the comic relief, try to help him, but they keep reminding him of Barry B Benson. As the movie progresses, he develops more and more of a hatred of bees and finds that he cannot escape bees no matter where he goes. The movie ends with Ken hanging himself to ascend to heaven, where he can finally be rid of bees in his life.
    The movie then cuts to an after credits scene of all the characters doing the Whip/Ney Ney dance.

      Sure, but back then, it wasn't just one generation of incest for royals; meaning a historical figure like, say, Don Carlos of Spain might have had normal-ish parents but was mentally ill and violent because of all the inbreeding. It affects generations ahead of one's own children. Physical deformities are also not the only issue.

    Oh man - there are so many things wrong with this animation. Bevanfield? That thing you guys animated and added the correct instrument sound too? That's a harpsichord. Not a piano. The early piano wasn't invented until roughly 1700.
    At 24:10 sounds like hurried interpretation of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" being played in two different keys on an already out-of-tune harpsichord with the timbre of a broken saloon piano.
    The singing sounds like someone trying to do a karaoke duet alongside a slightly delayed recording of themselves.
    Dammit, studio - PICK A CENTURY.

    As soon as I saw this video, I clicked. 38 minutes of Phelous tearing apart a poorly-made animated film equals 38 minutes of awesome.
    This whole film is so convoluted and ridiculous, I kinda love it. Especially the scene where the sisters get butt-booted out of the frame by Monsieur Saru-Dooku-Dracula-Lee. Really, Saruman, don't you have better, less evil things to be doing?
    Edit: fives years on, and 18:20 cracks me right up too. 🤣

    Going from portraying King Lear on stage and narrating a Stanley Kubrick film to this sad sack of an adaptation, I can see why Hordern didn't give two shits in his performance. At least Christopher Lee somewhat tried to provide one aspect of this movie something that's remotely tolerable.

    • @Rebochan
      @Rebochan 7 років тому +43

      That's pretty much what Christopher Lee did in every movie he was in. The guy was never on autopilot even when he was in garbage.

    I can’t get over the fact that Christopher lee gave so much of a damn in this movie of all things to actually use a French accent and even go through the effort to change up his voice so he actually sounds like a character and not just Christopher Lee reading lines. It’s actually kinda sad that even in this shit of a movie he gave more of a damn than some voice actors in huge box office films

      That's Michael Hordern. He's one of my favourite voice actors, and did a lot of great things. He read audiobooks for The Chronicles of Narnia, was the voice of Mr Badger in the Cosgrove Hall adaptation of The Wind In The Willows, narrated the opening of Watership Down, voiced Gandalf in a radio adaptation of Lord of The Rings, did all of the voices for Paddington, and was the voice of the old wise man with a bird for a hat in Labyrinth. It is pitiful that he was in this though.
