  • It's time for Savage Race season to begin! The good news was that Savage had some new obstacles on tap for 2023, but the bad news is they wanted to test them out before putting them in the Pro Wave (possibly because people complained when they saw the preview videos...). It was hard to run by them without trying them out, but I did go back and try a few after the race, and they were fun!
    The race itself was tough for me. I'm always breathing heavy in these videos, but it was even worse this time around, because I was getting over a cold and my lungs just weren't ready to go from zero to race mode so quickly. I'll take it as a good test of will, because I was constantly fighting the urge to slow down and take it easy. I paid for it the rest of the day, as I felt like garbage afterwards, but I would probably do it again if I had to...

    Another great video, sir. Keep them coming in 2023 and beyond!
    Side note, I saw that the Indian Mud Run is officily dead. Too bad they couldn't make it work with the new ownership.
    I'm so glad I saw your video of the race in 2021 and got to run their last race ever in 2022. It was an epic experience! Thank you!

      Thanks! I use a GoPro Hero 9 Black and that can last a good hour fifteen to hour and a half, depending on settings. If I have a longer race that might take longer, I’ll bring a spare battery or two and put it in a waterproof case to carry with me.

    Hey Jason, thanks for the videos! I'm liking them quite a lot. I'm a Spanish runner and it's great to be able to see how races are in other places around the world, particularly (in your case) the US. BTW, what races would you say are the more 'technical' or 'difficult' that you've run?
    Also, in Europe it's becoming standard the 3 wristband rule (for competitive waves): you start with 3 bands and hanging obstacles (and sometimes a few others like the parallel bars) are 'one try'. That is, if you fail the obstacle you lose a band. At the end of the race if you have 3 bands left you go to the finish line directly, if you have 1 or 2 you do 2 or 1 penalty loops (one for each band lost) and if you lost all your bands you go to the finish line but you're disqualified. Is that happening in the US?
    Finally, are you allowed to use chalk for obstacles?
    Sorry to bother you with so many questions, but I'd like to try a US race at some point and I'd like to know more about how you do things there in the US.
    Thanks!

      Thanks for all of the information! It is really interesting to see how other parts of the world are having races. I feel like Europe has really challenging races and that the races are getting easier here in the US. We haven’t gone with the 3 bands to start here. How do you like it? I worry about the one try if you make a silly mistake, but maybe the extra pressure is good. I just hope people aren’t quickly failing an obstacle they know they can’t finish on purpose.
      The closest we have to that here is at WarX. They have 5 obstacles that, if you can complete them (as many attempts as you want), you get a wristband. Only those with all 5 wristbands at the end are eligible for awards.
      Most races do not allow you to use chalk, but people will grab tall grass or things around to dry hands before attempts.
      I would say that the most challenging race I’ve done is Frontline OCR. You run with a 20 lb (9 kg) weight vest and must complete all obstacles with it on. And there are challenging grip obstacles that some struggle with, even without a vest.
      I was hoping to go to Europe this summer to run some races there, but I have had bad luck with illness and injury this year, so I am not in my best shape.
      Feel free to ask more questions. I am more than happy to share any information that I can. Take care!

    • @EduardoJCh
      @EduardoJCh Рік тому

      @@JasonWilliamsOCR I have mixed feelings with respect to the 3 band rule. On the one hand it helps reduce queues and helps in case there's one (or two) obstacle(s) that you can't pass and with it you can finish the race. On the other hand, a small mistake may suppose you lose a band and adds a lot of pressure (at least to me) in the race.
      Thanks a lot for the info with regards to the races. I'll keep watching your videos to inform myself on these races and if (when) we decide to go to the US to run a race I'll probably contact you again and ask you. Although right now I'd love to take part in next year's OCR World Championship.
      If you ever decide to come to Europe I could point you to a couple of races (mostly in Spain but I've raced in Italy too).
      In any case, thank you very much for your answer and keep up the great work with your videos!

    What type of shoes do you recommend for this , im doing it in November for the first time , any specific brand or model?

    • @JasonWilliamsOCR
      @JasonWilliamsOCR  11 місяців тому

      I recommend trail shoes that drain water well. If they don’t drain, once they get wet, you’re trying to run with really heavy shoes. VJ makes great shoes specifically for OCR, as well as innov-8. Some people swear by Hoka Speed goat and Salomon shoes, but I found them to be heavy when wet. Hope this helps!

    Do they give out medals for placing? Like 1st, 2nd, 3rd? If so what did you place? You kicked butt!! Im thinking about at the very least trying a race. I wouldnt necessarily consider myself an athlete but I am a veteran and currently walk 8 to 15 miles a day as a letter carrier. Maybe ill start a little smaller like a Blitz or something. Any advice for someone starting out?

    • @JasonWilliamsOCR
      @JasonWilliamsOCR  Рік тому +2

      Thanks! They give out overall prizes for the top 3, and cool axe medals for top 3 in each age group (5 year increments). I was second in my age group that race.
      As far as advice, it depends on what you feel is more challenging, the running or the obstacles. If it’s the obstacles, I would practice pull ups, monkey bars, rock climbing, things that use upper body grip, because you’ll see a lot of that. Also, try one out for fun and play around on the obstacles. I got better by going back after my races and practicing on the tougher obstacles to get better with technique. Also HIIT training helps because you switch between running and obstacles, so it’s tough when your heart rate is up there. I’m sure you’ll do great and have a blast!

      @@JasonWilliamsOCR bundle up as much or little as you like. There is no water stations (they'd freeze). But the race is 5.7 miles so it's isn't a deal breaker. Similar to Savage, elites need a clean race to qualify and there's some doozies. In the end it's all about fun. Other than losing your band there are no penalties for not completing anything. It's last Saturday in January. Lake Geneva is on the Wisconsin/ Illinois border, not too far from Milwaukee . Keeps me honest during the colder season so my training doesn't lapse. So fun
