This might seem like a pedantic point to some people, but I would like to take an example phrase from this video as a teachable moment about Statistics. Around 5:57 the Lightspeed Tailor mentions that they want to check that the measurements correlate with the measurements of the suite. There are two commonly-used notions in Statistics behind the term "correlation": one broad, and one narrow in scope. Correlation in the broad sense means that two (or more) variables are not statistically independent. This is an extremely low bar to set for fitting a suite! Mere statistical dependence is a very general and potentially non-intuitive idea that would certainly be a necessary but insufficient criterion in evaluating how well the body measurements match the suite measurements. Correlation in the narrow sense refers to a bilinear statistic called a correlation coefficient. It quantifies linear association as the cosine of the angle between two vectors of measurements, which can also be interpreted as a normalized inner product using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Correlation in this sense can be positive or negative to different extents. A perfect negative correlation here would entail that as the smaller the body measurement, the bigger the suite measurement, and vice versa. We clearly don't want that ! Likewise, a perfect positive correlation would entail that as the body measurements got larger, the suite measurements got larger. Between these two cases, clearly the positive correlation would be closer to what we would want. But knowing that your suite measurements are a linear function of your body measurements is still only a necessary but not sufficient criterion. One wouldn't want their suite to be 10X+5 of their body size. Rather we would like for the body measurements to approximately equal the suite measurements, which is a different notion than correlation. ...
