    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Roy (Richard Dreyfuss) and the local police give chase to the UFOs.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Steven Spielberg followed Jaws (1975), his first major box-office success, with this epic science fiction adventure about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) is an electrical lineman who, while sent out on emergency repairs, witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Neary's wife and children are at first skeptical, then concerned, and eventually fearful, as Roy refuses to accept a "logical" explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his job, his home, and his family to pursue the "truth" about UFOs. Neary's obsession eventually puts him in contact with others who've had close encounters with alien spacecraft, including Jillian (Melinda Dillon), a single mother whose son disappeared during her UFO experience, and Claude Lacombe (celebrated French filmmaker François Truffaut), a French researcher who believes that we can use a musical language to communicate with alien visitors. Lacombe's theory is put to the test when a band of government researchers and underground UFO enthusiasts (including Neary) join for an exchange with alien visitors near Devil's Tower, Wyoming. In 1980, a "Special Edition" was released. While its primary selling point was the addition of scenes inside the alien spaceship, Spielberg claimed that he also cleaned up some choppy editing in the second act.

    • @johannwilder1437
      @johannwilder1437 8 років тому +35

      That little red light is not a fictional creation of Spielberg. It's based on actual credible research and reports. For example, in Rendelsham Airforce Base, UK, there was an event with multiple trained military witnesses where they saw those little red orbs and described them as looking like they were dripping fire.

    • @roquefortfiles
      @roquefortfiles 7 років тому +25

      FYI. The little red whoosh is an homage to Walt Disney!!. Its not about incredible research on UFO's. It was intended as a tribute to Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Walt always used to have one last Dwarf scamper across the screen LATE!! pulling up his pants. The little red whoosh is the last late dwarf. The punctuation mark.

      Spielberg had some serious ‘inside’ people working with him for this movie, there is a very good chance that these depictions are almost identical to the real ones. That red light has been seen by hundreds or thousands around the world, often near ufo activity. It seems like they’re the same size too... I kinda freaked out when I saw them at first they look so real!

    I love the foreshadowing of the man whistling "Coming Round the Mountain". Some of the lyrics of the song coincide with the events that happen at the end of the movie...
    "She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes" (the iconic shot of the mothership appearing from behind Devil's Tower)
    "Oh we'll all go out to meet her when she comes" (people from all over the world being drawn to Devil's Tower to meet the aliens)
    "We'll all be shoutin' "Halleluja" when she comes" (the priest praying for the travelers as they prepare to board the mothership)

    • @TimeTravelinc
      @TimeTravelinc 5 років тому +4

      The crazier part is what he said, after the ships come flying down the highway, “They can fly rings around the moon, but we’re years ahead of them on the highway.” As if he knew of their ability and maneuverability on Earth, a comment by Red Spaniard questioned that maybe he had been a former Area 51 employee, but if that was the case, how come they got past the toll w/o paying fare and decided to just fly off the highway once they were in Ohio?
      One of the few questions left unanswered for this film. My personal theory, maybe they were getting a feel for the land they were going to be visiting. A place that didn’t try to shoot them down, or think of them as gods. Also, if you saw the previous scenes, it was nice of them to return our toys in nice neat condition.

      @@work90 Trumbull favoured front projection. He brought this technique with him from 2001. He had Greg Jein make huge forced perspective table top landscapes which were photographed then front projected for the back grounds. The one shot i love is the last shot as Neary and the cops all stop and watch as the ships split in three directions. The entire front projection unit was on a crane and does a slight pan up. Thunder and the city lights come back on. Great moment.

      What I love about the FX work is how original it all looks. Unlike any big FX movie. A very original approach to the subject matter and the entire film designed around that theme. The way Trumbull made the UFO's from light and lens flares and just the slightest hint of a body. I find that I am always kind of trying to look past the lights to see what is there. You can never quite make out everything and that makes it..."INTERESTING".

It's general escapism to portray some hungered direction someone needs to follow in a movie, and individuate it by separating from people who refuse to understand, but your spouse and children aren't something you just dump as a matter of fulfilling a character's direction.

    I was always fascinated by the red orb. No hints as to whether it's a craft like the others or not, whether it's controlled by the craft in front or if it's in control of itself and why it appears as a point of light rather than something more physical like the others.
    It's very mysterious which fits well with the film.
