I had two of these units in the mid 90’s. My workflow was to track everything to a tascam 4 track portastudio. I used an Alesis hr-16 for drums, (on track 1) then the other 3 tracks I would dedicate to the ms-1. I would get such a loose organic feel out of those tracks by playing in every part live… Now I’m on the lookout for the Akai remix 16, and a Yamaha su 200. Two more units I should have kept. Love the videos Marlow. Keep grinding.
If you set the MS-1 to record then choose a pad, the input gets fed through the sampler at the low bit rate and you can use it as an insert effect without recording into the MS-1. If you use a TRS to RCA cable and plug the LEFT RCA into the input, the RIGHT RCA to the output of the MS-1, you can plug the TRS into a standard insert jack on a mixer.
It's really simple but a fun sampler. Great for any studio collection if you're a vintage sampler connoisseur. It's dope with the memory card [Sandisk only]!
I like this type of content. Please do more! I couldn't help but notice that the title says Korg Digital Sampler while the actual product shown is made by Roland 😂
This was my first sampler. It was the easiest sampler ever as it relates to recording a sample, looping, etc. back then I had an issue with the sequencer and also couldn’t figure midi out the right way. I loved the sampler
I bought that shit in '96 and I relied on my own Drum skills to fuck with my own beats when I was coming up...it made me aware of NOT having a metronome to help me keep on beat when I was already on beat...so the "quantizing" nonsense that came about in the MPC never really mattered to me because I always have had rhythm...however that is spelled. I made some pretty good beats with this machine and I was reminiscing when I come across this video, :)
Yeah that's exactly how I learned unquantized swing and, timing without a metronome as well. I also learned chopping samples with my ear and, using numbers instead of waveforms with my eyes shortly after on the MPC2KXL.
Same here, man…quantizing is for the groove-impaired. Not gonna call it an outright cheat code, but I never truly leaned on that except for 32nd notes and roll effects. Timing…or mastery of it…is everything.
You don't have to sample to get the low sample rates - anything you put into it goes through the converters 'live', so you can set it to 12khz and put it before your main sampler, almost as a lo-fi effects box.
Yeah I noticed that but when you record it the sound even though very close it sounds a bit different. But you're right I can use it that way, much faster and I still get a great effect out of it.
I had one of these a few years ago! I loved it. I ended up giving it to a good friend of mine because his had got snatched by one of his homies back in the 90s LOL.
This was my 1st sampler. I triggered it with a Boss DR-550 Drum Machine. I ended up letting a friend borrow it and never got it back. Not being able to save ideas was frustrating. If it had a floppy instead of the memory card it would have been way more useful.
The ms1 was my introduction to sampling, was actually pretty impressed with the sound quality at the time! Mine Didn’t come with the elusive memory card either which got frustrating pretty quick, they’re pretty fussy about which brand/size they use. Might dig it out for a bit of Lofi grit 👍
The funny thing about this clip is that I remember meeting producers who had no rhythim...whatsoever. I could make my drum smack as if they were "quantized" so when I met these mofos with ASR-10s and what not, they were so out of beat, it's like they LITERALLY NEEDED A METRONOME TO KEEP THEM ON BEAT...meanwhile I was fine because I knew how to time my drumming. My joint cost me about $80 or so,,,when mofos were effing around with $1200 equipment with off beat drums...it was just hilarious they could not get them in sync within a rhythm(sp?)
Yeah this thing trained me to chop and trim samples using numbers rather than wave files (which I learned afterwards on the 2KXL). It also taught me how to make beats un-quantized and, I didn't use quantization until years later in sequences. The MS-1 is still key in my workflow to this day with the MPC2KXL, MPC One, and SP-404MK2. Some of us are lucky to have natural rhythm not needing metronomes and, like yourself I'm one of them.
Whoa I've been waiting for someone to do a video on my first sampler and, the grandfather of the SP-404MK2. Thanks Marlow! I use two of these, the MPC2KXL, the MPC One and, the SP-404MK2 in my workflow. I control the MS-1 via midi from the MPC. The MS-1's sequencer is a non-quantized one that has its place. And the MS-1 has mute groups.
@@mpchead Yeah 4 note polyphony killed it so back then I moved onto the MPC2KXL. But, it's more of a collectors item now with the successor the SP-404MK2 which carried all the features plus terminology.
The pitch of the ms1 is way more extreme compared to the 202. You can sample in the highest quality and bring it down to lowest quality for super low pitch.
MPC Head I’m having some static interference with my line in on my MPC Live 2 with my audio interface. My audio interface seems to be fine when I’m stand alone-ing it by monitoring through my headphones. I don’t know what the problem is, maybe the cords, maybe the line out on my interface, or the line in on the MPC. My two questions are; Is it a common problem for MPC’s to have static in the line in? And what 1/4 stereo cords would you recommend?
So it looks that advantage of the Ms-1 is the midi output but on the other hand you will probably never use that as master. I use sp 202 heavily to jam (check my channel). As a second unit paired with Digitakt. Auto-start sampling (based on audio level) on sp 202 makes it quite fast to bounce chops from other units. I just purchased SP 303 so it might replace 202 in my setup. But maybe I will keep both for live performance
No the MS-1 has always been the slave in my setup with the MPC 2KXL. Frankly, it's a perfect union once you go into the MS-1 and, customize the midi mapping to match the MPC's top 8 pads for banks A-E.
man, i struggle to hear these differences., i be hearing a little his and background hum tonal change and crunch. but not much else, what am i missing. or is that it ? and its quite simple.
That's mostly it, the biggest difference is when I sampled the drum loop, you could hear the crunchy sound but not much else going on. It is what it is
@@mpchead cool. gotten a bit better with this stuff lately, need to understand this 48 to 44 khz stuff next.. had weird issue on the 404 with 44k stuff
Este tipo de samples están buenos para secuenciarlos via MIDI con algún programa o algún otro sampler que tenga un buen secuenciador. Se ve como una opción más económica a la Boss SP 202.
The biggest drawback, if storage is important, is that the memory card this takes is extremely rare to track down and, as a result, is pretty expensive. I once had one of these and got rid of it for that reason. But, it was a nifty lil box. The SP line is better to use, outside of its sequencing capabilities.
Super easy to find just get a pcmcia adapter I got a 256mb card inside mine, although I had to run the .mid update on mine because it was a 1st gen unit
It's the grandfather of all SPs and shares the same terminology and, many of the sampling features. (Truncate, Gate, Trigger which on the 404MK2 is loop, ability to set repeating loop points in the middle of samples like the 404MK2, bank layout, the way internal samples are saved, etc).
Sorry for the error at the intro saying Korg, this is obviously a roland ms1 sampler.
Ur human…😉
That’s it, you’re fired!
No worry Enjoyed the video
I would love a video comparing the sample rates of the MS1 and the SP202

Thanks man, that setup you mentioned sounds very organic has you mentioned. Cool way to record no doubt.
Have a su200 I’d sell you if you’re interested man! Just got it two weeks ago. Love it for jamming but kind of want something like a 404 or a mpc500.

I tried that but recording into the ms1 sounds a bit different than just using it the way you mentioned. But that's a cool feature for sure

For boombap quantize is not really necessary but for stuff like techno and other dance stuff it is

Great video content Marlo! Thanks for sharing your sound exploration. It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. 🔥

Great video man, always interesting to hear various old samplers!
My first sampler I got back in 96, great little box

My first sampler...back in 95. I'd bounce tracks out of my Tascam 464 four track and loop them back in.

That was my first sampler back in 1997. I used to trigger it from a Yamaha W7 using MIDI because it had a better sequencer.
I have one buy new still works like charm
The MS-1 uses digital audio compression which is what gives it that crunch.
Great content keep on it Marlow👍🏾
Damm never knew about this one. Well one day, I can’t wait when you get your hands on a Roland Mv 8800, you really going to love it.
