  • A Federal DOT inspector shows a group what he looks for when he stops a tractor trailer and makes sure it is road worthy. He answers the question that truckers and trucking companies have been asking for years. This video is a great resource for drivers and managers.

    A tip for anyone that drives: when you park at a truck stop set trailer brakes and pull forward to put tension on the kingpin. It is known that drivers will mess around with other drivers. Including pulling kingpin locks and swapping airlines. If there is tension on the kingpin it can't be released.

      +dontaskme ooooh yaaaa. This WILL happen. Drivers working for other companies than yours.
      Or drivers who used to previously work for that particular company that got fired. - They do this ALL the time.
      Always , ALWAYS, ALWAYS ,do a pre-trip before leaving the parking spot out of Loves, Pilot or where ever you stay over night., even if you are paying for fuel and only left for 10 minutes.
      Always check your Kingpin Locking pin, your Air and electrical lines and Tandem locking pin handle & pins. Also check your trailer undercarriage lines.
      Ive seen people cut them completely.
      Also check your Hood Locks. - many people have unlocked them, so if you stop at a light your hood will open and youll be screwed.
      ALWAYS do a pretrip quick inspection around your truck when ever you leave the truck or sleep over night.

    I have always been instantly passed but in one case they found a tiny leak in my break line and gave me 48 hours to get it fixed. I got it fixed in less that 12 hours...I DIDN'T WANT A LEAK in my break line...not even a tiny one!! I was glad the DOT INSPECTOR caught something I HAD MISSED!!!

    *He forgot to mention brake shoe lining. You need to measure those brake shoes first. It is more important than checking for push rod stroke. Weather you're a Mechanic, Inspector, or Driver, make sure the brake shoes % is above specification. That's what's actually stopping your truck*

    While working for Waste Management I had to add spring brake chambers to the rear drive axle because the driver reported that the parking brakes did not hold while he was on the tipper. I had to contact Mack the manufacturer of the tractor to get a list of required parts because by adding the spring brake chambers required a additional air tank due to reserve capacity regulations.
    While the driver was on the tipper the forward drive axle would be off the ground due to the angle of the ramps and the air bags not deflating from removing the trailer so the spring brakes on the forward axle were useless, they were working; However with the axle off the ground it didn't make any difference. Waste Management considered that a vehicle modification and required contacting the manufacturer for proper installation.

    This guy is what we call in the business, a hard on. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, in fact he is doing his job but most people can be counted on to do a lack luster job and skim over a lot of things. Checking a wheel bearing with the wheel on the ground is not possible but yet he says they don't really check tire pressure which is really simple to do unless an inside tire's valve stem is misaligned. You would think that all rigs on the road have open lock jaws on the top plate or (5th wheel) which is really shocking and I never ride behind a trailer anyways but now I definitely will not. Basically he is saying that all inspectors are different which is true. If one of them just took a class on slack adjusters you can bet he will be all over them when he does an inspection. It's human nature we are all different but if you keep your equipment in proper working condition, your PM's are done regularly and your paperwork is done and stored in the truck and your stickers are affixed to the vehicle you shouldn't have to worry about any DOT inspection, but we all do. The cost to an owner of that company are enormous for purchase, operation which include driver, insurance, fuel, fuel stickers, and maintenance and TIRES, are really astronomical today so when his vehicle is detained and red tagged ( out of service) at a DOT inspection he has real reason to chew some ass for the people he pays to assure him this will not happen and fire someone that may be you so do your job or that hard on may cost you your job. Happy Motoring !

    Reading the comment section I decided to post. First off I am not a driver. I do not have my CDL. What I am is a "yard hand." I work for a company that transports fresh and frozen seafood. We do not have a warehouse nor dock. My yard is basically a transfer and driver termination lot. We do everything trailer to trailer. I am required to do a daily lot check which includes truck and trailer inspection. Since I am not a mechanic or a driver I don't quite know what to look for. The basic look over is one thing but the insight of a DOT Inspector can help greatly with the equipment before it departs the lot.
    The information in this video will be very useful for me and my crew if I can incorporate some of the tips and tricks into our yard check log. Thanks for posting.

      you expressed something here that i just couldn't ignore. how many driver s are certified mechanic to be held accountable for the proper functioning of the truck and trailer? obvious flaw in the law. my next question is, is everyone in the transportation industry certified as a mechanic to do an inspection? i believe there is major problems with commercial law. in my personal car, there are no requirements to inspect my car, but i can drive it in any mechanical order as i wish. smh

    • @evansbluetube
      @evansbluetube 7 років тому +2

      Eagle i Trader You don't have to be a certified mechanic to know your brakes are out of adjustment. If they're out and no one checks it, you're gonna be in big trouble when you go to use them and they don't work. There are tons of checks you can do that don't require knowing anything about how to fix a vehicle but can maintain a safe vehicle. Signal lights, belts, fluids etc. Thinking a car and a truck are similar for needing check is pretty flawed. A trucks sole purpose is to drive 10 to 11 hours a day. Most cars don't even come close to seeing that much use and most people at least get oil changes where they check most stuff, usually cuz they want to upsell you but still. Not the same. Not even close.

    I stopped watching at about the 5:30 mark. As a longtime smoker I used to have burn marks all over and none were from pot. Then he seemed to be saying that if you didn't wear your seat belt you might fall out of the seat.
    If he had something to say after that I missed it.
    Having said that the last time I knew there was an inspection going on I went there on purpose. Here, once they inspect my Pete they put a sticker in the windshield that means they likely won't stop you again for a year. I was pulling containers for the railroad and it was all over the radio where the inspection was taking place. The inspector mentioned that I must not have heard the radio and I replied that I had but since my truck was well maintained I wasn't the least bit concerned.
    Once again, attitude is 90 percent of everything we do.

    • @ericwsmith7722
      @ericwsmith7722 6 років тому

      No benny they play no role in public safety, its about money. Every state in the country requires trucks to be inspected annually. Now it is our elected officials and state legislators that are how laws are made in this country. So if the government in charge of making laws see no need to for more frequent inspections, why have they not done so ? And why do the police not just enforce the laws that actually exist ? You have a armed branch of the government enforcing laws that do not exist, How can anyone be OK with that is a "free" society ? And if you are OK with that, how about the police going threw neighborhoods and searching ...say every 6th house for drugs and illegal weapons ? Public safety of walking all over the constitution ?

    at 30:55 company drivers are not the ones covering things up when it comes to things like this.
    Yes its the drivers responsibilities to make sure things are in order, but when the driver informs the company they work for about them,
    many company Dispatchers tell the drivers the keep moving and to dont mind the problem they found. And if a driver keeps being persistent about the problem,
    that driver gets threaten by the dispatcher that the driver will be discharge (fired) if they dont get back on the road and drive and ignore the problem.
    THAT is the major problem here. - companies , dispatchers and Driver managers forcing drivers to do things by force by threatening the drivers job.
    So State Troopers need to realize this factor, because its happening ALL the time with many companies...........

  • @matthewbranham7447
    @matthewbranham7447 9 років тому +7

    @Alex Castillo - DOT Inspectors do not receive any type of bonus. They do have a quota/goal on how many inspections they have a year. I dispatch drivers daily and some do not do a proper pre-trip inspection, which causes a lot of the CSA violations, due to little if any preventative maintenance. A clean inspection helps your company so keep up your truck and you will not have any issues. If you don't they will target your DOT number as a hazard for having too many "bad" points.

    Very good video. With regard to split locks being non properly engaged. even back in 81 when i was trained for class one it was standard practice that after engaging the fifth wheel to the trailer king pin. we do a tug test right then. But your right it is usually something simple and avoidable that gets overlooked and then some one dies. Kinda like Mayday series safety for airplanes. usually something silly that gets missed and then whole bunch of people die... If I ever fly in an airplane again, since watching so many episodes of Mayday. I'll just want to do a quick 15 minute inspection before we take off. lol but I don't think the pilot or airport authority would ever let me. so I won't ever fly anywhere. lol However, I will up the thoroughness and frequency of my truck inspections. pretrip, more midtrips and postrip. That I can definitely do. Thanks again for a great video.

    Great video to watch and all truckers should watch it. If at the very least, to cover their own ass “if they get an inspector who isn’t determined to write a ticket no matter what.” But with all due respect brother, these DOT inspectors don’t care about safety as much as they care about raising money $$$. If they want to find something wrong with your truck, they are going to find it no matter how good or bad the condition of your truck is. I’m sitting here listening to this guy, and half the stuff he said it would be his word against yours. You really want to cover you’re ass? record your daily pre-trip on your phone from start to finish. That way if this clown comes along and says something is wrong, nope!! I’ve got it on film and all the proof I need in court.

I know that some may disagree with this inspector but you should listen to him cause this is what a 21 year inspector will nail you on regardless if you think he is right or not. I posted this video in the hopes that it helps to keep the road safer and to educate drivers and company owners on how to avoid fines and lost time from getting shut down. Use it how you will but I would love if the comments were more constructive rather than just arguing about the pot comment.

Saying what you are looking for versus showing examples of the out of service details would be helpful.

    Good video and I appreciate you posting it... Nothing wrong with listening to a DOT officer of 21 years... Although, I have to say, his opinion regarding burn marks on seats and floors being "Pot", is a little rediculous. I'm not saying there aren't driver's out here smoking weed but just because there is a burn hole on the seat or floor does not mean the driver is smoking pot. I have a burn hole in my seat and it is not from me, I don't smoke anything, it is from the previous driver... I have never been asked about it or had any dot officer mention it. Other then that, the video was good...

      Its better to have the Fire Extinguisher and NOT need it, Than NEED it and NOT having it..... Safety first.
      Also you CAN have a second Fire Extinguisher in the truck that is much larger, it can be purchased in any large hardware store like LOWES or Home Depot.
      there is NO laws that says you can not have a secondary larger Fire Extinguisher. as long as there is 1 certified DOT fire extinguisher in the truck.

    Is it the drivers responsiblity to make sure proper maintenance is done on company trucks no sure they should report problems but if the fines were company fines they would make a effort to make sure the trucks were in good shape before they put them on the road .

    • @walterderzay6802
      @walterderzay6802 9 років тому +5

      nisw1918 It is illegal for a company to require a driver to operate an unsafe vehicle. If the company is requiring a driver to operate a defective vehicle, the driver should report the company. No penalty may be given to a driver for requiring a vehicle to be repaired to safe/legal operating condition before operating the vehicle. The driver is responsible to complete a Pre/Post trip inspection and document defects. Whistleblower laws are in place to protect drivers. Companies that are encouraging this unsafe and illegal activity should and will be investigated if this is taking place. Drivers need to step up and report bullying from a company to the FMCSA.

      Is true. Read your CDL manual under "Driver Disqualifications" The law covering chemical testing says you have agreed to take such a test just by being licensed to drive inPennsylvania. Even if you are found not guilty of driving while under the influence, your driving privilege will be suspended for at least one (1) year if you refuse to take a blood, breath or urine test. In addition, if you are involvedin a crash involving a motor carrier vehicle or Cmv, and a police officer is required to investigate, you will be required to submit to testing for alcohol or controlled substances, with the cost for testing to be paid by your employer. If you refuse to submit to alcohol or controlled substance testing, and are convicted under Section 3756,you will be subject to fines of up to $200 (plus costs).

    Could have summed it up in one minute. I'm going to look at every single thing until I find a way to give you a ticket. Gotta love state agencies that rape the common man because taxes just don't cover the bills.
    I'd love to do the same thing to the vehicle he drives and I bet money I could find several things to give him a ticket for-that's how ridiculous DOT is.
    And they wonder why drivers loathe them. I wonder how great our society would be if the leeches weren't here to drag everybody down.
    No driver that put 10,000 miles, or more, a month on a vehicle can keep a truck in perfect running shape- that's a fact!
    Just another way to tax you without calling it a tax.
    Oh, and I would love for a company driver to show me how he does a complete pre and post trip inspection every day, because I run 14 hours ( never less than 10.5 hours driving)a day and don't have time to stop and piss, much less spend an hour a day inspecting pitman arms, slack adjusters and washer fluid...
    Yeah, this irritates me to no end.
