    There is a recent Nikon interview at DP Review which says they want to have state of the art technology in their cameras and i think they have achieved that with the Nikon Z6 III. This is amazing because the Z8 and Z9 was already state of the art technology but Nikon surprised us with the technical specs of the Z6 III and it's partially stacked sensor. It's does have the best allrounder package now on the market compared to other competitors.

    • @natureredux1957

      Well it was just released, it's supposed to have better specs then similar priced competition. The Z8/Z9 are fully stacked while the Z6iii is not. Putting a partially stacked sensor in a Cropped Nikon Camera would have FAR more staying power. Aka a proper Z500. Since there are REAL doubt as to whether or not Canon or Sony will make a proper Cropped Sensor Camera.

      @@natureredux1957 I see this different: Z8 and Z9 are fully stacked sensors at a price range where you won't get anything comparable from Sony or Canon. The Sony flagship A1 is extremely overpriced for what you get. Which cameras do you get from Sony and Canon with those massive 6K and 8K video specs in the same price range? None. The same is true for the Z6 III.

The video package is class leading if you have watched Gerald Undone. I went to a Nikon Z6 III event last week and the first thing I took notice of was how much cleaner the EVF appeared, it's like turning on the wipers when your windshield has fogged up a bit. I'm satisfied with the Z9's EVF, the Z6 III's is just a very noticeable improvement.
    You hit the nail on the head with the charger/USB cable changes that are taking place globally. No manufacturer is going to take on the added expense of packaging different versions of their products if they can avoid it. The EU requirements will force manufacturers to adopt a standard and the rest of the world will either adapt or be forced to adapt. I understand the inconvenience to some, but chargers are still available to purchase should one need/want. On the bright side, that drawer everyone has filled with duplicate chargers, just became a lot more valuable.

    I just traded in my Z7ii for a Z6iii and so far I'm loving the upgrade (yes I consider it an upgrade even though it's half the MP). Low light performance is stellar and having all the buttons in the same place as my Z9 definitely makes things a lot easier. For me the ergonomics are just right - slightly bigger/deeper than the Z7ii but so much lighter than the Z9.

    As you know I’m predominantly a video shooter and finally Nikon has given us a killer camera-right price, right features, right size. I haven’t had a lot of time for testing yet, but the ISO6400 appears to be a big plus and hits a more useful sweet spot compared with Sony’s 12800 which often can be too big of an exposure boost. I’ve also reached the conclusion that bargain basement open gate (S5II, Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6k) isn’t worth the slow sensors and poor low light capability. If I need to film verticals then I will rig separately for verticals and create the extra takes. Your night shots look fantastic Matt. That’s a lot of latitude Nikon have given us. Oh and thanks for the clarification about the EU charging regs. I’m fine with keeping the charger out of the box but a few in the US got their shorts in a knot over it. Happy shooting!

    Not including chargers is just another case of big companies giving consumers less while charging more. Charging through your USB with multiple batteries is a pain in the ass. Having to pay extra for a charger when spending more than $3k on a camera is BS in my opinion. I'm selling my previous Nikon, am I supposed to sell it without the charger?

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  7 днів тому +2

      Did you watch the video? This is law in the EU, other countries are starting to follow and now it is up to you to decide. But for those that don't need it, or want it, they don't get one. If you think you need one, you purchase one when you pick up your camera from the store :)

    • @SkepticMedic
      @SkepticMedic 7 днів тому +4

      @@MattIrwinPhotography here in Canada it's not the law, it's just another added cost on top of new lenses and filters and everything else when I upgrade my camera. Just another case of getting less for more money and passing more costs onto consumers. Shrinkflation. I can't sell my gear without the charger that it came with can I so now I have to buy a charger and they're not cheap either ($75 at Nikon Canada and they're out of stock 🤬). Stop defending the corporations who are sticking it to consumers every chance they get.

      Try just running a USB powerbank while you're shooting. That's what I do on anything longer than an hour and I leave with a full battery, don't have to think about it at all (cage and cable clamp is a must though)

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  7 днів тому +2

      I'm not defending. I personally agree. It is ok for you and me to take responsibility for our alternative charging needs. The battery can still be charged in camera. And what is changing is you now have to spend about an additional 2% of the purchase price on an alternative to charging if you want it. And if you buy third party it is less than 1%. Now giving you and me this choice means that thousands of other people, who may never need a charger, or already have a charger, are not shipped one. And thus that means it never needs to be made in the first place for those that don't ever need it, for whatever reason. I am personally ok with that. Apple have done the same thing globally, I am ok with that.

    • @SkepticMedic
      @SkepticMedic 7 днів тому +2

      @@MattIrwinPhotography using 3rd party chargers and batteries isn't usually a risk I'm willing to take with my electronics. Nikon Canada charges $75 and$109 for the chargers, an item that should be included with my $3400 camera! Maybe if they're not going to include the charger, the price should at least be reasonable. It probably costs Nikon $5 to make these chargers in China somewhere. This just proves that it's nothing more than a money grab hidden behind so called environmental conscience to get shills on board with promoting it. And also Apple sucks.

    Took mine out for the first time this afternoon. First...I'd definitely have interest in a Z8a or Z9a (similar to what Sony did a few years ago) with just the better viewfinder and no other improvements. It is that good! Best I've ever used. Second...Really seemed to help some of my "lessor" lenses like the 28-400mm that I haven't been overly happy with thus far. Fewer megapixels seems to help those lenses (and maybe they were designed with this camera in mind). Autofocus was spot on...Third...I forgot how nice a mechanical shutter can be for the shooting experience. Same speed you got from a D6 in a camera 1/3 the price in today's dollars. It's a winner for sure. Cheers!

In this hot, steamy climate I live in, it is sometimes really hard to see things well. Another great one Matt!! I had a quick play with the Z6III in one of Melbourne Camera Stores yesterday. Needed to see and "feel". The little changes in ergonomics compare to the Z6/Z6II are actually very noticeable! For the better IMO. The grip depth and height, the position of the exposure compensation button (as on the higher ends body), and the play button, of course!!... "little changes, great impact"!!!...
    I have never had a Z8 or Z9 in hands, simply because I don't need such camera. So, I was really curious about how the improvement in the body autofocus may affect the performance of a notoriously slow focussing lens such as the 85mm f1.8 as compared to a Z6 ... And I was not disappointed!!! Focus acquisition is so much faster at mid range, the body really drives the lens to focus where you want it to (specially wide open when moving from a somewhat far subject to a much closer one) and focus is so much more accurate on the eye... Simply a whole different ball game from the first generation... So for those who were wondering, that's another piece of info that may be helpful.

    I'm a working professional and use my Z8 almost every single day, and often for hours at a time. I use the USB-C charging all the time, almost exclusively. Moving between shoots I put it on charge with my Smallrig VB99 and a good high wattage cable and I don't need to charge the battery separately. For long shoots I also use the VB99 on one of the velcro v-mount clips that came with something else and just attach it to myself and use a cable clamp on the cage to hold it in place. It's pretty seamless once you're used to it and I never have to think about battery at all anymore. It'll go all day and then some.
    I'm not sure what wattage etc the ports are but I definitely find it better on the Z8 than the Z6ii and that it charges very quickly, I imagine the Z6iii is the same or better.

      My method is similar, whenever in my bag I attached to the same as your battery or a smaller one, and cams are charged again for another 4/5 hours. And of course if power is getting low, I can pocket some smaller batteries and run a cable. Even when on the Peak Design clips I do a similar thing out of my back pack if I need to, but it is very rare as batteries usually go the distance :)

Hence I would like to ask you way you were so astonished by the quality, it seems to be on par if not worst of the previous cameras. 6:40 - This is about electronic products which have "non-changeable batteries. So from Nikon's point it is being cheap on you, while you still paying more.
    Personally I have the old MH-24 with my Z7II and Z8, and I still bought the MH-34 charger, so I can use my USB-C charger.
    Also personally I don't like to use the USB-C PD on my Z8 - as a default charger port - since I already see the rubber failing on my camera, compromising the weather sealing.
    Only using the PD port when I know my timelapse will take a long time - like when I did aurora timelapse in the cold for 4 hours. That time the battery bank and PD charge was absolute necessary!

    Excellent extended look at the Nikon Z6iii. Given that I already have a Z8 and Z9, I probably won't be buying a Z6iii, but the technology in this camera has peaked my interest in Nikon further developing a higher megapixel, small frame successor to the Z7ii. In my use case I can't always fill the frame with the intended shot, so a 50% crop, or even greater crop is needed a bit more than occasionally. The 45.6MP sensor of the Z8/Z9/ and Z7ii stands up to a severe crop better than 24MP. Other than that, the Z6iii would make a wonderful travel and hiking companion. And thank you for the thoughts on our need to cut back on consumer waste. I'm sure there will be some loud cries of distain from people who feel put out by such considerations, we all need to grow up and do our part to protect our planet.

    Nikon should give consumers the option to buy a a camera bundled with a charger at a reduced price compared with having to purchase them separately in case you’re new to Nikon and don’t have a compatible charger yet. I would be a little upset if I were buying my first Nikon camera at a cost of $2K+ and I had no way to charge the supplied battery out of the box except in-camera where I wasn’t able to charge it while I swap in another battery to continue shooting. If Nikon’s batteries had a USB-C charging port incorporated into the battery as do some of the third-party options then it wouldn’t matter as much. But until then they should at least give consumers a cost effective bundle option.

Well I used the 28-400mm f/4-8 and I cropped and the White Winged Dove looked fantastic. Then I put the camera in DX mode and it was fantastic also. I did not use any Denoise software either. I love the camera and at first was bummed out that B&H was backordered after the first minute it went on sale. So my camera store told me to buy it through them and the first day of shipping I got mine. Bought it without the kit lens since I already got that with my Zf. Playing with adapters from other camera systems I own and I have only put one Nono CPU lens data in the camera. Images are sharp and video excellent. I did have one problem with a CFExpress Card that was freezing up with the camera and it wouldn't turn off. Just popped the battery out and everything went back to normal until it happened again. Bottom of the camera was hot to touch. Back and top was warm but not hot. Switched to recording to the SD card and no problems. Doubtful. I responded to that claim. If you go to DPR forums and search for a topic by Horshack, he has done comparisons between the Z6 and Z6 III. Conclusion: the Z6 is marginally cleaner at high ISO, and DR is better at low ISO (though the Z6 III's dual gain sensor means it catches up from ISO 800 onwards). Which, honestly, is not a surprise. After all, the sensor is faster. With the Z8/9 there was a penalty to pay for that, and with this as well. A small penalty, which probably doesn't make a significant difference, but a penalty nonetheless.
      So the claim that the Z6 III is one stop better looks to be... well, I think Matt is very enthusiastic. I like that, but it has a downside.

    I doubt most people buying something like a Nikon Z8, Canon R5, or even the lower end mirrorless full frame cameras like the Z6 III or R6 II would classify themselves as casual users and only have the one battery that came with the camera. When I go out for a day of photography or are on a photo trip, one battery in that type of camera doesn’t last the day. Maybe if you are shooting with a Z9 or R3 you could get through a day. USB charging is only practical if you need to top up the battery that is in the camera. Often if the manufacturer has upgraded the battery, even if it is backwards compatible, it takes their newer charger to fully charge the higher capacity version of the battery or at least that is usually what the company claims. I don’t know that not including a charger with this type of camera is the answer. I’d prefer manufacturers to offer a recycling program for their older equipment and/or accessories like batteries, chargers, and cables. It’s a little bit of a hassle but at least Apple lets you trade in older models of their equipment for recycling and even takes a little off of the price on the new model.

    regarding the speed of the expeed 7:
    it might not be 100% the case that it is running with the same speed like in the Z8/9. a processor in this power range produces a lot of heat as well and that depends on the clock speed. 2GHz creates much more heat than running it with 1GHz.
    that higher clock frequency has several disadvantages:
    1. it drains the battery faster
    2. it needs a bigger cooling system witch is also more expensive.
    when having less pixel to calculate, you can turn down the clock to half the frequency of the Z8/9 and save money on cooling and give the customer a better battery lifetime.
    theoretically they could even lower the supply voltage of the chip a tiny bit at a lower speed and even save more power.

      Great points Stefan, it is interesting to think about what could be done with the Expeed7 and less pixels.
      Perhaps you are spot on regarding the clock speed, and that allows more power for the brighter EVF. But that also might be happening due to the ongoing advancements in OLED / LED / EVF tech. Just so hard to know what they are doing with power allocation and CPU allocation.

    KEH sell quotes for Z6II ask that you include your old charger. So no charging a second battery outside your new Z6III without purchasing another charger. And if you traded in your old rig, off you pop to purchase new “e waste”. Phones have non removable batteries, camera’s don’t.

    Absolutely agree on the need to reduce e-waste. I use my camera - a lot - and use usbc to charge before an event, and simultaneously charge up a brick. If the camera gets low out in the field, I just connect it to the brick. I do not think the battery has been out of the camera since it was purchased. My z6iii is still in a warehouse somewhere... I'm in the queue and waiting

      There are many, many use cases. I can't have a brick dangling on the end of a cable while crawling around in the field. But I do need to have a couple of batteries recharging back in the travel trailer while I'm away. I understand the EU regulation and basically agree. But one size doesn't fit all, and if this were truly about the environment Nikon would also drop the throwaway strap and plastic bits like the cable manager. Instead, they just dropped the piece that many of will have to buy from them (I don't use third party chargers, too many years in digital product design to fully trust them to not degrade battery life).
      I didn't read the fine print, and assumed I was getting a charger I could dedicate to the new body I just bought. But you now what happens when you assume ;-)

    I think adding bird detection mode will help bring those D500 and D850 wildlife shooters up to mirrorless, because without it the camera doesn't sound like it is serious about wildlife. The nearly limitless buffer is enticing to wildlife and wedding photographers. One wedding shooter is impressed that he can be taking stills and switch to video and there is zero lag for it to clear the buffer. I would love to see an image comparison to the Zf. I don't plan on exchanging my Zf for a Z6iii so I'm hoping you won't change my mind. I actually based my decision on the LCD and when I couldn't get the tilt screen on the Z6iii it lost all attraction for me. I hate the flippy screen.

      Folks need to be clear, the Z6 III does detect birds - it's just that it doesn't [yet] have a separate subject detection category specifically for birds, it's currently bundled under the "animals" category. The camera has very much been in the hands of wildlife photographers to test - and there are several previews/reviews of such here on UA-cam.

    I think, diz companies can copy what Viltrox is doing: put a usb-c port on the batteries

    Matt is right with the EU regulation about E-waste in his video. Also Apple had to change their "right-for-repair" policies and was forced to use USB-C to be compatible and interchangeable. All manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Sony are following this "no charger included" policy.

    Nikon has not reached the end goal mirrorless until next generation processor is out, expeed 8.
    In my opponent the Z cameras still feel not quite there. I have the z6 and z8.
    Or maybe it’s just the firmware that needs to be done all over. It feels like when they began making Z cameras and where programming the firmware they were still, in their mind, in dslr way of thinking. They need to do it from scratch with all what they have learned until now and include AI.
    I mean why haven’t they even fixed the little thing of the focus box being so lagging behind where the focus actually is. I was so disappointed about that since the z9 was reviewed the first time. In the commercials the focus box seemed to work perfectly.

    If it was supposed to be charged by usb c, then the flap should have been seperate.. 😑.. nikon rubber flaps for the ports get damaged so fast.. and I sell my old camera to buy the new one.. so obviously i don’t have the charger

      It's weird, I have been using this type of camera since 2004 (D70), and I can't recall my rubber ever failing. I suppose we all use our cameras in different ways, in different conditions.

    The argument about battery charges does not hold up. The Z9 charger, MH-33, can't charge older EL-EN18 or EL-EN18a batteries; the D5 charger, MH-26a/MH-26aK, can't charge the newer EL-EN18d batteries. So there is no universal charger for EL-EN18. So do you throw your older EL-EN18 batteries into electronic waste? I also don't know where you get your prices for chargers. A new MH-33 charger is $139.95 in the US; a new MH-26aK charger is $458.96!

      Agreed. It seems disingenuous to pose the battery charger short change as an environmental effort instead of a cost saving effort/secondary sale effort when they still put the likely never used camera strap and cable management plastic in every box.
