  • Today I took a look inside a hair dryer, curler, styler, dresser, hot air brush or whatever it's called. I reverse engineered its schematic, explained how does it work and revealed its design flaws. I also found its common failures and fixed it.

    You mention that it's better to "let the solder go slightly under the wire insulation, because that makes it stronger." Well, in my training to build aerospace standard electronics, we were taught to NEVER allow the solder to go under the cable insulation. The reason given was that by binding the strands together, it actually makes the cable more brittle and weaker. In contrast, a bundle of many separate wire strands can slide against each other when the cable is bent, will be more flexible and tolerate being bent many more times. Our instructor would cut apart our practice soldering to 50-way circular connectors, and if any solder had gone under the wire insulation, we had to start the whole assembly again... It drove some graduates crazy trying to get it right because you have to solder very quickly to stop the solder "wicking" up the wire.

    a lot of power is pretty usual in many kind of hair drier here in italy
    last year i was searching for an hairdrier and Bloody Hell! the less powerful i find was 1800W!
    I've seen models with 2200 W of power!! Very impressive!

    I repair GHD and cloud 9 hair straighteners part time and I'm quite familiar with most of the faults that happen with them, failed cords are only one of the problems I've seen with them. Cracked heater elements, wires burning off the heater elements, thermal fuses, failed temperature sensors (on GHD4.2 and 5.0) etc.

    Yes the second one was a bit odd, smoke was coming out of my ears :-D.
    When there are too many paths i lose track lol.
    I remember some of the plastic hair dryers having the motor tapped on to the negative end of the element for power, through a diode bridge of cause.
    Imagine a plastic coke can with a handle, that's the sort i've seen.
    You are not the only one with hair loss, i started losing it at 17, but life goes on :-D.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 років тому

      Yes, the second one is a brain melter :). And it initially was an even bigger brain melter for me, because I have mistaken one diode for a wire, as it was inside of a sleeve. I remember my mother's old hair dryer ua-cam.com/video/4MQlMNtjC1Y/v-deo.html from probably 1970s, with an universal (brushed) motor running directly on 220V ac.

    1:38 "its often being used in a bathroom..." Not in the UK, it isn't. 230/240V mains sockets are not allowed in bathrooms, shower rooms or next to sinks. Women have to use these devices in their bedroom.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 років тому +1

      In the Czech Republic we do have sockets in bathrooms. Every bathroom has one. In older buildings, the sockets are sometimes directly above the bathtub (!!!). Nowadays it is banned to have it directly above the bathtub, but it is still legal to have it in bathroom as long as it is not directly above the bathtub.

    • @danielmantione
      @danielmantione 6 років тому

      Same here in the Netherlands. In bathrooms over here you will often find devices like this:
      www.elektra-info.nl/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/wasmachine-aansluiting-afgemonteerd.jpg
      If you have electrical equipment like washing machines that need to be in the bathroom, they connect to mains directly without plug inside that box. Like this:
      bestewasmachinekopen.nl/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/20151027_134728-168x300.jpg
      The box is completely watertight, so no water can come into contact with electricity.
      The only other way to have electricity in bathrooms is a shaver socket (through an isolation transformer), but those don't give enough power for hair dryers.

    • @shana_dmr
      @shana_dmr 6 років тому +1

      Simon Tay, I always wondered why do you keep washing machines in some strange places like kitchen, now I got my explanation. Thank you :) But you have plenty of peculiar regulations, like these yellow isolation transformers on worksites - in day and age when every single power tool on the market is double insulated.

    • @simontay4851
      @simontay4851 6 років тому

      The yellow isolation transformers output 110V AC with a centre tap to ground so 55-0-55. I think the main reason for them is in case the cable of a power tool is damaged or cut. The maximum voltage between one phase and ground is 55V which is safer than 240V to ground. Washing machines are usually only in the kitchen in very small houses/flats. Larger houses usually have a utility room with sink, washing machine, dryer and sometimes a toilet. My washing machine and dishwasher are next to the sink in the kitchen of my small 1 bedroom house but my parents have a utility room with sink, toilet, washing machine, dryer and the gas fired boiler for hot water/central heating.

    • @cicindelapragensis
      @cicindelapragensis 5 років тому +1

      In Belgium, "humid" rooms like bathrooms are equipped with sockets, but installations newer than some 30 years must be protected by a 30mA differential current circuit breaker. For some reason my whole Czech flat is protected by such a 30mA, not sure if it's a standard in this country or they just wanted to save on an extra 300mA one.

    The overheat protection acts also as a thermostat. The heater is only on for a short time. The heater has a high wattage to warm up fast but for short time. Usually the air temperature is around 70 degrees celcius at the output.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 років тому +1

      I don't think the protection would cycle in normal operation. I think it is normally still on. The heater has a low thermal mass, the temperature cycling would be noticeable. And most importnatly, if the protection turned off, the fan would turn off too.

    • @migsvensurfing6310
      @migsvensurfing6310 6 років тому

      @1pcfred 6 років тому +4

      Mica is a rock mineral that is found in layers you can break apart into thin sheets. Past that I don't know what it is formed out of or anything. It used to be very popular as insulators in electronics for heat sinks before the advent of those silicone rubbery isolation pads. I think mica actually may thermally perform better? But mica is fiddly stuff that takes a lot of handling to work with. Read production wise it is expensive to use. So due to cost it has fallen out of favor in the industry. Plus people probably think using mica is kind of old and crufty looking? I like it. I have a nice collection of salvaged mica isolators. I just had to pull out the drawer of them to admire for a bit here.

    Eh, i don't mind the diode being right inside the heater. I mean what's the worst that can happen if it fails? Low-power setting won't work. Seems to not be a safety concern. I mean look at the thing, everything else fails before the diode! The cable and the the brush both.
    Still never used this, probably never will, i mean you're suggesting i use a high-power mains heater that can get tangled in my hair? No, thanks. And wow the condition of some of these things, they should have been discarded for good long ago. Besides, they aren't cheap.
    I don't think you should be shocked at the power though. I mean a basic hair dryer is 2kW. I think this is supposed to be the "gentler alternative".

      I have 1kg of 1mm wire and 1kg of 2mm wire. I never ever used anything below 1mm :). Given the amounts of solder I use, I couldn't unwind it fast enough :D.

    Hey, i am new to this channel but I like your videos much. So please do more of them but maybe get a clamp meter or some proper current measuring device. Putting a screwdriver into the mains is dangerous. You’ll probably know this yourself. And while doing such things is tolerated in many parts of the world it’s not a good practice to show to such a big audience. Some half grown might see it and try’s it out (ignoring your warning at the beginning of the video).

      People have been properly warned. I do have a clamp meter, but sometimes I just can't avoid the temptation to do it the dodgy way :).

      Honestly? He's doing it indoors, not on a bare concrete, probably with a shoes on, has dry hands, doesn't touch anything remotely grounded with his other hand, there's no physical way for him to grab that screwdriver after getting a muscle contraction and he surely has RCD - in worst case it would be few cursewords. In fact, I know plenty of old (like 70+) electricians that would just work live with their hands on wires in such conditions, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have 50 years of physical work thick skin on your hands;) Good practice is also risk assessment. Lately we started to train electricians that are so loaded with "never work on live stuff, it will kill you in 50 different ways no matter the cimcurstances" that they tremble after looking at open distribution panel or a live bare wire. It's counterproductive and does not improve safety at all.

    To nejdůležitější, JAK SE DO TOHO DOSTAT a přitom nic neposrat jste neukázal!!! A to nemluvím o angličtině. Tomu jsem téměř nerozuměl.
    Celkový dojem je tragický.
